javaguru:No word of a lie boss. it was just really infuriating seeing a lot of people kill that guys confidence cuz they don't know any better. If i had gave in to fear and what people said then, I'll probably be teaching in a school or working in bank or just a profession that's not scalable. no disrespect to people working these jobs though. but if you know better, you just have to do better. |
doggedfighter:Exactly. Couldn't have said it any better. I was very stubborn about my decisions so my parents had no choice but to back off. wasn't easy but my life headed towards my desired destination. |
After going through this thread https://www.nairaland.com/6572647/thinking-dropping-out-college-focus , I realized that in the coming years, there's still going to be a large % unemployed and ignorant youths. I have never seen a group of people to afraid to take risks and generally pessimistic in my entire life! How do you people not know that times have changed and even in this country, especially the emerging tech industry in Nigeria, you DO NOT NEED a Bsc to work. I dropped out of 2 federal universities because i realized very early in my life that there's a difference between schooling and education and that a time will come that society is gonna need actual EDUCATED people. I'll leave you to figure out what it means to be educated cuz it seems like a lot of you guys really think you're educated. You're being Schooled that's why we're where we are as a country. if 60% of the youths are actually educated, Nigeria will probably be a better place. First uni, I studied biochemistry and 2nd uni i studied zoology. I saw that all of these courses didn't align with the trajectory i envisaged and i took a conscious decision to change my path. it wasn't easy but here i am today. A friend that didn't even bother going to university at all. He started learning immediately we left sec school in surulere. i recently met him in victoria island and he's a goddamn big boy. A complete senior developer at his workplace. All of my friends back then in school are doing one thing or the other just to make ends meet and only just a few are doing relatively well. I am not mocking anyone but a lot of you just really need to stop viewing life in binary terms. Before i got a job, i interviewed with about 3 companies in this Lagos and not one, not a single one made mention or even asked me about a Bsc. I've interviewed with firms in Brooklyn and Amsterdam, they never asked me for a degree. You people really need to wake up o. I've been an instructor for over a year at a well-known bootcamp in lagos. Majority of my weekend students were bankers, accountants and all other types of people looking to get into the tech ecosystem. Times have changed and you people better understand this. |
sexylassie2:If there’s anything I’ve learnt so far, is has to be that you just have to have genuine love for this programming of a thing. If you’re going into it just because everyone is, it will end in tears |
So I’ve been noticing a trend lately. Mostly from insecure CS guys that always look for opportunities to talk down on programmers that didn’t go through the conventional route of getting a CS degree. Make no mistake, a CS degree is not a joke and should not be treated as such. Having said that, the world is moving past the whole certification oriented way of employment. I just read a news on CNBC that Donald trump wants to sign an order that favors skilled workers over newly college graduates. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/06/26/why-we-need-new-trump-executive-order-on-no-college-jobs-hiring.html I am not a CS graduate and almost all of my friends that I’ve met in this programming journey. We worked really hard to get where we are and although there’s still so much to do but we’ve been able to come this far without a CS degree. My advice to all CS graduates is this, your employer wants and needs depth. Stick to one aspect of CS and master it. The world has changed! Seriously it has! We that learnt everything we know today by ourselves and are doing well are a proof that the world has changed! Don’t get left behind. |
Lol! This mrBible guy is just salty and insecure af! You’ve got to be on a different level of insecurity to be ranting all over this thread. I didn’t learn CS, neither did 3 of my friends that are all doing great in their line of work. I am not going to be the person to diminish the usefulness of a CS degree but when it comes to PROGRAMMING, Baba SOME of you CS students are just so full of sh!t. Your employer needs depth. They want to see what you’ve done and what you can do. How come we’re all getting offers from Europe if we’re not good? I have only met on outstanding CS guy who’s crazy at what he does. Just keep improving and stop crying like a little baby |
Hey guys. I’ve always been reading topics and posts on this section from the sidelines so i thought I’d create an account and contribute a couple of things. This post is aimed at answering a couple of questions as to what programming language you should learn and the mode of learning with the highest ROI. First things first, i see a lot of guys here that try to discourage newbies from going into web development. It is for this singular reason that i really decided to make this post. What Language should you begin with? There is no one correct answer to this question. To be able to make an informed decision in relation to this important question, you need to focus on 2 things. First thing is why you’re thinking of learning to code plus what you intent to do with the language you might end up choosing. The second thing comes after you’ve answered the first which is the Numbers of the surrounding the language you choose. The numbers of active GitHub repositories and the numbers of remote jobs listing that ‘this’ language has. WEB, MOBILE or DESKTOP? If you want to answer this based on the second parameter that we assigned to the “What language should you begin with question” , no other form on programming comes close to web-based programming in numbers(all ramifications ). The web is now very very different what it was 5-10 years ago. Hell! It’s even different from what it was 2 years ago . I know over a lot of guys that are in Europe today through the power of JavaScript! I myself did an interview for a firm in the U.S couple of months ago but i didn’t get the job based on falling off short in some few points that would take me to the final round. I have a couple of tests from 2 firms in Europe that i haven’t taken yet. It’s just there sitting in my mailbox waiting till I’m ready for the assessment. What I’m really trying to say is, the web provides a huge opportunity both local and international if you’re really really good at what you do! As a side note, JavaScript happens to be the language that dominates the web (do with this side-note information what you will ) MODE OF LEARNING? Again, a lot of guys here tell newbies not to learn from YouTube tutorials. I cringe when i see this and I’ll tell you why . The best way to learn introductory concepts of programming is YOUTUBE/UDEMY! Eventually if programming is your calling, your instincts will push you to search for more information on the tutorials that you’ve watched which will in turn lead to reading of books and articles. In this way, you’re already Hot for clarity and knowledge which makes reading and assimilation almost seamless. Do not put the cart before the horse. I think I’ll stop here for now . If there’s any other thing you’d like me to add let me know in the comments and I’ll respond when i can. Stay safe! |
I just made a topic that’s contrary to what you think. Please read |
