TheTraveler:very fine sir thank you |
tensazangetsu20:i'm curious yeah do you think passing a dsa interview means you're gonna be successful in that role? i mean i could cram a binary search tree or hash table. Regurgitate it and 'pass' the interview but does that make me a good developer? |
Lol Dem suppose give you Ambassador of data structure and algorithm. tensazangetsu20: |
Lol |
Lol this guy really said learning nodejs is “standing on one leg”. You clearly don’t know what you’re saying. |
Think4Myself:Hi Bro. No I'm not a react native developer. I'm a backend NodeJs developer. react native is really similar to the normal react code you write on the web. You learn react once, you can write it anywhere. web or mobile. the code is the same. Not a full time react developer but its like the first thing i learned before i switched to backend fully. If you want to learn react, you need to read their docs religiously and look for articles and videos and that explains more about the concepts discussed in the official docs. This is structural learning and it works for me. Move to project based tutorials and try to do your own thing from there. All the best bro! |
LikeAking:Lol Bro. Those 2 things you mentioned are quite important but it's missing hard work. Add that to the equation and you're good to go! |
tensazangetsu20:Lol make i still dey observe sha |
tensazangetsu20:Hahahahahahahah Lmao wahala. Omo which kyn thing be this. Thought it was supposed to be delivered though |
tensazangetsu20:Makes sense. Thanks boss. How much would it cost to ‘clear’ it though? Have you got any idea ? |
I’ve got maxed out M1 MacBook Pro coming in hopefully sometime next week. They asked if i needed monitors and all those stuffs, but as a backend dev, one screen don do me. So what happens after my contract with the company expires and i decide not to renew, do i ‘send’ the laptop back to them or it’s mine to keep? I used to think only full time employees get equipments from their companies and not independent contractors as they would like to call us. So as a remote dev, has your company ever shipped equipments down to you? |
Bro if you've gone through a some of my posts, you would've probably come across where i've mentioned that i've got no degree. Dropped out of uni twice. In a below middle-class nigerian home, this is tantamount to ostracization from your folks because they believe nothing good can come out of your life and you'll end up being a worthless piece of sh!t. So i can say i fairly understand what you're going through. I'm gonna tell you 2 things. which is based on exactly how i made it to where i am today. First is your mindset, When i started learning, i understood that i had to be really good at this thing because my life literally depended on it. what else am i gonna do? Imagine what that mindset did for me. i was literally doing this stuff every day of the week at any little chance i could get. There was no option for me to quit or say that i'm not motivated or any of those excuses. its either i was good at it or i'm done for. I had no backup plan. 2, Another thing that really helped me (this is like the most important) was the support of my mother. She stood by me all through the whole school ish and just kept supporting any decision that i made. she bought me my first laptop. she was a petty trader at the time but i had no idea what she saw in me that made her support my 'craziness' as my other siblings would put it. You need a support system Forget about programming languages or frameworks for now. You need to get your head straight and understand how your circumstances should be your fuel. For me and my mom, it all paid off in the end. God knows there's nothing that woman will ask me for in this life that i won't get for her. As long as money can buy it. |
longlife101:Nothing Serious bro. i've got my picture, name, contact info and job history and github link. i don't have BSc so education is out of it. plus i'm a premium user. cant remember how much i pay. |
Update: So i just completed the tests about 20 minutes ago. Javascript algorithm 3.5 hours. out of 5 questions, i got 4 perfectly. the last one, not really sure. Chatted with the Co-Founder right after i finished and he sent me a blushing emoji Lol! Lets see whats gonna happen. So what i've decided is to try to run the 2 jobs together if the 2nd one comes through. they're both in the Uk. PS: i've got a couple of people sending me mails. Abeg no vex i wont be able to reply those mails for personal reasons. I'll keep you guys updated on how it goes. |
kennethfranc:I think you can. but my current company has a daily stand up at a particular time in the morning which you have to be a part of amongst other time demanding stuffs. i dunno how these ones run their own affairs |
tensazangetsu20:Brother i know i'm a bit lucky cuz there're a lot of devs far better than i am in this lagos. But i never said the field was saturated o bro. i'm even of the opinion that it cant be saturated due to the fact that there's not enough quantity of QUALITY developers. About this job, i know i'm supposed to follow the money but i've settled in with these people. i wish someone could understand my perspective |
Felixitie:I don’t know man. I’m confused. My current job doesn’t pay as much as these ones are willing to pay but I’ve been getting along with these guys and they’ve been treating me super nicely. My girlfriend also asked me to take this new offer |
So this afternoon around past 3, got a notification from LinkedIn that so and so wanted to connect. I checked out the profile and it happened to be a Co-Founder of a betting platform in the UK. I reluctantly accepted sha as per wetin i dey find again. So he sent me a direct message about how they’re in need of a backend developer and i happen to be a good fit. I quickly checkout their website to see what they’re really about. Found out that they’re pretty big as they have clients like betway, live scores bet lion etc so i started to take him serious. Long story short, he asked for my salary expectations. It was there and then i remember what happened to me from the previous thread i posted couple of weeks. Something a guy from the thread stuck with me, so having nothing to lose, i asked him what the company’s budget is for the role, he said it’s competitive. So i said for me to consider it competitive, He would have to pay me a minimum of 4500 pounds monthly, which he didn’t even argue! He said he’s gonna send some tests over then we would hop on a call. But here’s the issues , i just started at a new role for a company in the UK and i kind of like my current teammates. We’re getting along really well and i feel it’s going to look awkward and somehow leaving after barely spending 3 weeks. If you were in my shoes what would you do ? |
Got my first job from someone that knew i was actively into programming so he asked me to join his already established company. Although the money wasn't much but i needed to move from 0 to 1 so bad that i would have worked for free. Newton's first Law of motion |

africonn:Thanks boss . What i'll just say is, be good at contemporary technologies. That's if you're interested in working abroad anyway. A lot of these companies have already adopted these technologies and the up and coming ones are looking towards adopting it too. |
Lindner:Lol thanks for the input bro but i wouldn’t say i was desperate. I’m currently working so i just wanted to try getting a full time international job cuz i wanted change and new experiences. The issue was when i converted the money i ask for in naira, bro it was like x4 of what I’m currently earning and it thought it was okay for me. If you dey earn that type of amount for Lagos , omo you’re a goddamn big boy and Buhari economy no go disturb you. It’s just that it’s a company in a lucrative industry and i was just kinda like hoping i asked for more. Also the job came very fast. I didn’t expect to get one so soon cuz I’ve not even been applying for up to 10days. |
olubantylove:Hey bro. There’s quite a number of sites you get remote jobs. There are some that requires you to take assessments before becoming part of the network. There’s flexjobs toptal crossover justremote and most importantly, LinkedIn . |
So i recently applied for a backend position at a company in Europe and luckily i was shortlisted to take live coding test which i ended performing well. I was contacted a again and hopped on a video call with the other developers asking some technical questions. I was asked about my salary expectations and out of excitement i didn’t bill them well. It’s quite a big company and I feel like i should have asked for me. I was contacted few days ago with a contract to start with the price i told them initially. Anyways just wanted to remind my brethren here not to get too excited about jobs and always try to keep a cool head and also negotiate better. |
Serious i'm so happy to see someone else saying this thing cuz i was starting to look like a crazy person when i tell my friends a macbook cant be my primary laptop. I currently use a windows laptop but a buddy of mine that's not even a programmer bought the m1 chip macbook pro with 16gb ram 256ssd.. Just this afternoon, he sent me a screenshot of his 2 month old macbook telling him "Your system has ran out of application memory". On a normal day, i run about 8-9 kubernetes clusters at once and one of the things i hate most in the world is if a system is hanging.. kills my productivity. Should be getting a new laptop before the month runs out and i've made up my mind that i'm gonna get a dell xps 17 |
Anonime1105:lol omo my G designing is not my forte. Thats my primary weakness so i have Ui designers do what they know how to do best. if i were in your shoes, what i'd most likely do is get someone spin up a good design for me since its my portfolio or copy from different sources and try to tweak it the best i can. check other peoples portfolio and take different sections from different people. You can take a hero section from A, footer from B etc and try to redesign with CSS and just change the looks till it matches your taste. |
Karleb:You're not wrong. That's why I said "some companies". But knowing really knowing your way around distributed systems is a huge plus and automatically increases your chances of getting a really nice(financially) backend role if you'd agree. |
Karleb:Lol relax bro. i was just thinking out loud when i asked the question and i was expecting to share thoughts. plus docker, kubernetes and the likes are not gibberish. These are tools that were created to solve a particular problem and they've been excellent at it. Solutions exists because there are problems. You don't know me you don't know where i work. You don't even know if my company's project is built on microservices. You wouldn't even get a decent backend developer job in some companies even in Nigeria these days if you're not conversant with microservices. |
Hey guys so there's this microservices based app that I'm working and i currently have about 5 services communicating with each other at this moment. It's a node.js TypeScript, Docker, Kubernetes etc project. Before i started the project, i had planned on running my clusters on GCP so as to take an advantage of the free $300 credit but for months now, what was supposed to be a 48 hours payment verification process has spanned across several weeks. Google no gree answer me. I have an AWS account so after like a month of work, I decided to move my k8s cluster to AWS and oh boy! Guys it was barely 24hours and AWS charged my card for a very funny price. i had to move my cluster back to my local machine and continue working from there. A lot of companies these days are migrating from a Monolithic architecture to microservices. Do you really think its worth it?? As a side note, i found a very great tool for running k8s applications. its been a life saver. I think it was created by the guys at google. its called Skaffold. |
chineduuf:Bro what the f#ck are you even saying?? Didn't you read the part where i said getting a CS degree is not a joke and should not be treated as such?? After you've gotten a Cs degree, wouldn't you choose an area of specialty?. Let me even burst your brain, whatever branch of computer science you choose to specialize in, a random dude can take those same lessons and know exactly what you know (if not more). Both Harvard and Stanford CS classes are on youtube. If you and i both apply for the same role at google, whoever demonstrates practical knowledge in form of actual software created is who's gonna get hired. What do you mean by real and grounded Cs graduates are preferred at the top and makes more? Do you not understand that every employer in the tech ecosystem wants to see what you can actually do? Like practical, niched knowledge. I've seen this play out time and time again. Make una dey calm down abeg |
thesicilian:Maybe i should have stated earlier that I’m speaking in the context of tech. If you’re into tech, you’re not getting robbed of any opportunity if you’re competent enough for the job. |
tensazangetsu20:That’s a big lie boss. A very big one in fact! What are you even saying. Bro i have 2 friends in Frankfurt and Berlin. They both got jobs from here and i know them personally they do not have degrees. I trust you know HNG internship right? A top guy there that i know personally is also in Germany. He left Ambrose Ali. These jobs with options to relocate literally take care of everything for you. |
