2 Polyethylene terephthalate is made by combining ethylene glycol with terephthalic acid or with dimethyl terephthalate. It is then heated until it is a liquid. The molten polymer is sprayed through a device containing many small holes, known as spinnerets. As the liquid plastic emerges, it cools into long, then, solid filaments. The filaments are wound together into yarn. The yarn is then stretched to about five times its original length at an elevated temperature to increase its strength. The strengthened yarn is then woven into cloth and dyed with bright colors. This cloth is then put onto large rolls and shipped to the hang glider manufacturer.
Making the wing
3 Rolls of polyester cloth are typically 54 in (137 cm) wide and 100-300 yd (91.4-274.3 m) long. Cloth is cut from the roll as needed and placed on an X-Y cutter. This device is a flat table, typically 40 ft (12.2 m) long and 5 ft (1.5 m) wide, with numerous small holes in the surface. As the cloth is placed on the cutter, vacuum pressure pulls it flat against the holes. A system of gears, belts, and rails carries a sharp blade across the table horizontally (the "X" direction) and vertically (the "Y" direction). A computer controls the movement of the blade so that complex shapes can be cut to within one one-thousandth of an inch (0.0025 cm).
4 The cut pieces of cloth, which may number in the hundreds, are marked so that they can be properly aligned with each other. They are then sewn together on industrial sewing machines. The process is repeated with the pieces of cloth of varying shapes and colors until the wing has been formed.
Making the frame
5 Aluminum alloy tubing, typically 1.5 in (3.8 cm) in diameter and 10-20 ft (3-6 m) long, arrives at the hang glider manufacturer. The tubes are cut as needed by electric saws. Electric drills are then used to form holes where the frame will be held together.
6 Stainless steel cable arrives at the hang glider manufacturer in large spools that typically hold 5,000 ft (1,524 m) of the cable. The cable is cut as needed with large, sharp pliers.
7 The cable and tubing are assembled by hand to form the frame. Stainless steel nuts and bolts are used to hold the parts in place.
Assembling the hang glider
8 The sail and frame are attached together. After being fully assembled, inspected, and tested, the hang glider is partly disassembled for ease of storage and transport. The disassembled hang glider is placed in a cylindrical container and shipped to the retailer or consumer.
The coble and tubing are assembled by hand to form the frame. Stainless steel nuts and bolts are used to hold the parts in place.
Quality Control
Because hang gliding is a hazardous activity, ensuring that the equipment used is as safe as possible is critical. Manufacturers must meet the requirements for civil and/or military aviation equipment established by the federal government, under the supervision of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Before manufacture begins, the hang glider maker inspects all raw materials. The aluminum tubing must be straight and free from dents. The stainless steel cable must be free of visible flaws. The polyester cloth must be properly woven and free of holes. Tensile test machines measure fabric strength and the amount of air that can pass through the fabric.
The most important part of the manufacturing process is making the wing. At each step in the procedure, the wing is given a full visual inspection to ensure that it is being sewn together properly, with no weak seams. It is carefully inspected on a lighted inspection table to make certain that the seams are correctly folded and sewn and that there are no flaws in the cloth. At the end of the manufacturing process, the hang glider is fully assembled for a final visual inspection.
Before being disassembled for shipping, every hang glider is given a full flight test by an experienced pilot. The hang glider must have the proper "feel" and respond to the pilot's movements correctly. It must be able to fly in a straight line at a steady speed, with no sudden unexpected changes in motion.
The Future
Although fewer people are flying hang gliders now than in the 1970s, the technology has improved greatly. Today's hang gliders are able to fly more safely, for longer distances, for longer periods of time, and from greater heights. No doubt all hang gliding records will be broken in the near future.

Hang Glider Background
A hang glider is an unpowered heavier-than-air flying device designed to carry a human passenger who is suspended beneath its sail. Unlike other gliders that resemble unpowered airplanes, hang gliders look like large kites. Other gliders are usually towed by a car a airplane or otherwise launched into the air from the ground. Hang gliders, on the other hand, are usually launched from a high point and allowed to drift down to a lower point.
History
Human beings have attempted to fly using devices similar to hang gliders for at least one thousand years. Oliver of Malmesbury, an English monk, is said to have leapt from a tower with wings made of cloth in the year 1020. He supposedly glided for about 600 ft (180 m) before landing and breaking both legs. Similar brief flights are said to have been made in Constantinople in the eleventh century and in Italy in 1498. The Italian artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci made detailed sketches of various flying machines, but these devices were never built.
The modern history of gliding begins with the English inventor Sir George Cayley. By 1799, Cayley had established the basic design for gliders that is still used today. In 1804, he flew his first successful model glider. In 1853, Cayley achieved the first successful human glider flight with a device that carried his coachman several hundred feet.
The next important pioneer in glider research was the German inventor Otto Lilienthal. In the 1890s, Lilienthal built 18 gliders, which he flew himself. He also kept detailed records of his work, influencing later inventors. After making more than two thousand successful flights, Lilienthal was killed in a crash in 1896.
Inspired by Lilienthal, the American engineer Octave Chanute and his assistants made about two thousand glider flights from sand dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan at the turn of the century. Chanute's work had an important influence on Orville and Wilbur Wright , who invented powered flight soon after. The rapid development of powered flight in the twentieth century led to a decreased interest in gliders until after World War II. At this time, light, smooth wings made of fiberglass were developed for gliders.
The most important innovation in the development of the hang glider was made by the American inventors Gertrude and Francis Rogallo. In 1948, the Rogallos applied for a patent for a flexible kite called a para-wing. Unlike other kites, the Rogallo design had no rigid supports. Instead, it remained limp until it was given firm but temporary shape by the wind in flight. The development of Mylar, an extremely light, strong plastic, improved the performance of the Rogallo kite.
In the late 1950s, the United States government took an interest in the Rogallo design for use in parachutes designed to return spacecraft to Earth. Experiments were also made in building large powered Rogallo kites for military transportation. Inspired by reports of these experiments, the American engineer Thomas Purcell build a 16 ft (4.9 m) wide Rogallo glider with an aluminum frame, wheels, a seat to hold a passenger, and basic control rods in 1961. This was the first true hang glider. Early hang gliders were also built in the United States from bamboo by Barry Hill Palmer in 1961 and in Australia from aluminum by John Dickenson in 1963.
Although the United States government abandoned using the Rogallo design for spacecraft parachutes in 1967, hang gliders using the same design became popular in the 1970s. In 1971, the United States Hang Gliding Association was formed. While California is the favored spot for hang gliders of the West, Dunlap, Tennessee, claims to be the hang gliding capital of the eastern United States, thanks to its location high atop the Cumberland Plateau. Over the next several years, hang gliding became less of a dangerous fad and more of a serious sport. Seven fatalities from hang gliding were reported in 1995, compared to 40 in 1974.
Raw Materials
A hang glider consists of a wing, a frame, cables, and items to hold these parts in place. The wing, also known as the sail, is made from a strong, light plastic. Usually a polyester cloth is used. Polyesters are polymers—they are large molecules made by linking many small molecules together. Polyesters are usually derived from ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, or similar chemicals. The most common polyester for use in making hang gliders is polyethylene terephthalate , known by the trade name Dacron.
The frame of a hang glider, also known as the airframe, is made from an alloy of aluminum and other metals, such as magnesium, zinc, and copper. The cables and the parts that hold the hang glider together are made of stainless steel . Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, a small amount of carbon, and 12-18% chromium.
Samuel Langley
Samuel Langley was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, in 1834. As a child, Langley became interested in studying the stars and, despite that fact that he never attended college, went on to become a professor of astronomy and physics. Langley made many contributions to the field of astronomy, one of the most significant being the invention of the bolometer—an instrument able to detect and measure electromagnetic radiation.
While serving as secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, Langley developed an interest in aeronautics and obtained a $50,000 grant from the United States War Department to study the possibility of manned flight. He began building large, steam-powered models of an aircraft he named Aerodrome, without taking the time to first test his theories on gliders. By 1891 he had begun building Aerodrome models which were to be catapulted off the roof of a houseboat. The first five models failed, but his 1896 model flew more than half a mile. Later that year one remained airborne for nearly two minutes.
Finally, on October 7, 1903, Langley was ready to fly his first full-scale Aerodrome
from a houseboat in the Potomac River. With the press in attendance, the machine was launched and promptly fell into the river. Langley contended that the launching mechanism was at fault, but further attempts produced the same results, and his funding was soon depleted. Just a few months later, Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Until his death in 1907, Langley maintained that if accidents had not depleted his funds, he would have achieved the fame accorded to the Wright brothers. A few years after Langley's death, experimenters did succeed in flying his Aerodromeafter attaching a more powerful engine to it. Today, Langley Air Force Base in Virginia is named for this aviation pioneer.

Abortion is more dangerous than childbirth.
Not only does every abortion kill an innocent human being in the womb; but abortion is also more dangerous to the mother than if she were to give birth to the child. The evidence overwhelmingly proves that the morbidity and mortality rates of legal abortion are several times higher than that for carrying a pregnancy to term.
Abortion is not safer than full-term pregnancy and childbirth. Less than one in ten thousand pregnancies results in the mother's death.


Government statistics indicate that the chances of death by abortion are even less. But while deaths from childbirth are accurately reported, many deaths by legal abortion are not. This completely skews the statistics. Furthermore, “abortion actually increases the chance of maternal death in later pregnancies.” This means that some maternal deaths in full-term pregnancies are actually caused by earlier abortions, which creates a double inaccuracy.


But even if abortion did result in fewer maternal deaths, that wouldn't make it safer. The nonfatal but significant complications of abortion are much more frequent and serious than those of full-term pregnancy. One researcher states:
The evidence overwhelmingly proves that the morbidity and mortality rates of legal abortion are several times higher than that for carrying a pregnancy to term.


A year 2000 government-funded study in Finland revealed that women who abort are four times more likely to die in the year following the abortion than women who carry their pregnancies to term. Women who carry to term are only half as likely to die as women who are not pregnant.


Researchers from the statistical analysis unit of Finland's National Research and Development Center for Welfare and Health examined death certificate records for all women of reproductive age (fifteen to forty-nine) who died between 1987 and 1994, a total of 9,029 women.

Then they examined the national health care database to identify pregnancy-related events for the women in the twelve months prior to their deaths.
The researchers found that, compared to women who carried to term, women who had aborted in the year prior to their deaths were 60 percent more likely to die from natural causes, seven times more likely to die from suicide, four times more likely to die of injuries related to accidents and fourteen times more likely to die from homicide. Researchers believe that the higher rate of deaths related to accidents and homicide may be linked to higher rates of suicidal or risk-taking behavior.
Though the chances of a woman's safe abortion are now greater, the number of suffering women is also greater because of the huge increase in abortions.


No one doubts that legal abortion is marginally safer than illegal abortion, but neither is there any doubt that


decriminalization has encouraged more women to undergo abortions than ever before. Risk goes down, but numbers go up…. This combination means that though the odds of any particular woman suffering ill effects from an abortion have dropped, the total number of women who suffer…from abortion is far greater than ever before.
Even if abortion were safer for the mother than childbirth, it would still remain fatal for the innocent child.

Having a baby is a low-risk undertaking, but suppose the risk were much higher. When an innocent life is at stake, isn't there a moral obligation to take risk? Childbirth is much safer than trying to rescue a drowning child in the ocean or trying to rescue a woman who is being beaten or raped.

An adult swimming to shore from a capsized boat has a much greater chance of survival if he doesn't try to save a child. But does that mean he shouldn't?
Abortion can produce many serious medical problems.


Ectopic pregnancies occur when gestation takes place outside the uterus, commonly in a fallopian tube. Though usually not fatal, such pregnancies are nonetheless responsible for 12 percent of all pregnancy-related maternal deaths.


Studies show that the risk of an ectopic pregnancy is twice as high for women who have had one abortion, and up to four times as high for women with two or more previous abortions.

There has been a 300 percent increase of ectopic pregnancies since abortion was legalized. In 1970 the incidence was 4.8 per 1,000 births; by 1980 it had risen to 14.5 per 1,000 births.


Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is an infection that leads to fever and infertility.

Researchers state:
Pelvic infection is a common and serious complication of induced abortion and has been reported in up to 30% of all cases.


A study of women having first-trimester abortions demonstrated that “women with post-labor pelvic inflammatory disease had significantly higher rates of…spontaneous abortion, secondary infertility, dyspareunia, and chronic pelvic pain. Other infectious complications, as well as endometriosis, follow approximately 5 percent of abortion procedures.


Internal bleeding is normal following abortions, but in some cases it is severe due to a perforated uterus. This can cause sterility and other serious and permanent problems.

A perforated uterus was the cause of at least twenty-four deaths among U.S. women having abortions between 1972 and 1979.


Numerous scientific studies demonstrate that the chance of miscarriages significantly increases with abortion, as much as tenfold.


Tragically, some women are unable to conceive after having abortions. Tubai infertility has been found to be up to 30 percent more common among women who have had abortions

Having taken the life of a child they did not want, they will never be able to carry a child they do want.


The health of future children is also at risk, as both premature births and low birth weights are more common among women who have had abortions. Malformations, both major and minor, of later children are increased by abortion.

1) It compounds tragedy.

Sometimes the circumstances surrounding a pregnancy are tragic. Perhaps the woman was raped. Maybe the baby has been diagnosed with a defect. Or the woman's health might be at risk. However, one tragedy is not answered with another. We do not erase a rape by killing a child. We do not cure a baby by taking his life. And we do not avoid all health issues by avoiding the reality of another human being.
Women who have been raped must be compassionately cared for. But compassionate care does not include executing a woman's child. Parents facing a difficult prenatal diagnosis must be given real facts and
directed to others with helpful experiences . They must not be forced into a quick choice for abortion or urged to take the life of their child instead of giving her a chance to defy the odds . Women with high-risk pregnancies must be treated by real medical professionals. But treatment does not include intentionally killing a child . (If a child dies during the course of treating the woman – i.e., during chemotherapy for cancer, removal of an ectopic pregnancy, etc. – this is not an abortion.)


2) It takes innocent lives.

Science could not be more clear. Unborn human beings are living, separate, and unique. From the moment of fertilization – better known as conception – a new human life is in existence. Ending this life is not ending "potential." It is ending a life. We would do well to understand the modern science that reveals the humanity of the unborn. (Here is a

3) It violates civil rights.

Civil rights are violated when people are deprived of their basic rights in a discriminatory fashion. Unborn children are deprived of life – the most basic right of all – simply based on their location (their mother's womb) and their developmental status. This is discriminatory ,

4) It punishes innocent people.

A child does not deserve to die for the crimes of his father. A five-year-old cannot be killed because his father is a rapist. A five-month-old unborn child should not be allowed to be killed for the same reason.
A child does not deserve to die because her mother and/or her father were irresponsible. A child is completely innocent. A child did not decide that his parents would have sex or that they would use ineffective contraception. An unborn child is always innocent and should never be punished.


5) It can harm women.

Real-life stories demonstrate again and again that abortion harms women. Harm comes in a variety of forms – mental, emotional, relational, and physical – and in some cases, women's lives are lost through abortion. They can also experience the loss of their fertility or an increase in miscarriages after an abortion. Health & Illness
Guinea pigs are generally healthy when they receive good care and nutrition. To have happy and healthy pets give them a proper diet, fresh water, and a clean, safe habitat with toys for exercise. Unfortunately, even with all these things sometimes a guinea pig may become ill or injured.
When a cavy is ill, it becomes very fragile and its health can deteriorate rapidly. General signs of illness are hair loss, weight loss, panting, sneezing, wheezing, coughing, discharge, diarrhea and seizures. A sick pig is quiet, listless and dull. He may sit hunched up in a corner away from activity, people and cage mates. In the event of illness or injury, contacting your veterinarian is always recommended. Below is a list of some of the more common illnesses


Pneumonia
Pneumonia which is caused by a bacterial infection is the most common cause of death in cavies and symptoms may include wheezing or sneezing.

Urinary Stones
Small stones can form in the bladder or urethra and obstruct the outflow of urine. These stones are very painful and surgical removal is usually necessary.
Gastrointestinal Problems
Parasites, bacterial and viral infections, improper diet, stress or unclean cages can all cause gastrointestinal problems. These issues may cause diarrhea, constipation and bloat. Bloat is a medical emergency that is very painful and rapidly results in death. Signs of bloat are rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing, lack of appetite, inactivity, extreme pain and a distended abdomen filled with gas and fluid.

Eyes
Guinea pigs can get cataracts and pink-eye, but humans can not contract pink-eye from them. Eye injuries from sharp objects or bedding in the cage are other possible problems.

Ears
Ear problems may be caused by infection, injury or parasites. Scratching at the ears, head shaking, tilting his head to one side or a loss of balance are all symptoms of a possible ear problem.

Teeth
A common problem is when the incisors or molars of your pet do not grow straight. The teeth will not wear evenly, and may even grow into the roof of the mouth or cheeks. The teeth will need to be trimmed or filed back by your veterinarian.

Heatstroke

Do not leave your guinea pigs’ cage in direct sunlight, in your car, in an unventilated room, or in temperatures above 75 degrees. Symptoms of heatstroke are heavy breathing, laying on the belly, and even unconsciousness. If you find your pet with heatstroke, remove him from the area and submerge his body in cool, not cold, water. Give him fluids and contact a veterinarian.

Cage & Habitat
Your guinea pig requires a home that is safe and secure in order to keep him happy and healthy. A home includes a proper cage, the right bedding, hide areas, toys, and feeding supplies. Cavies are chewers, so wood and plastic cages are not suitable. They do like to tunnel in their bedding but do not dig. Wire mesh floors can cause serious injury to a guinea pig’s tiny feet and legs so the cage must have a solid bottom.
Guinea pigs do better in pairs as they prefer company, so unless you have a lot of personal time to devote to your pet you might want to consider having two pigs.
Cage
There are many commercially available cages that can make a wonderful home for your pets. Since they chew, the cage should not be made of wood. It should also have a solid bottom since wire mesh floors can hurt a guinea pig’s feet. You need about 2 square feet per cavy in a cage, but bigger cages make a happier pet.
Keep your pig’s cage in an area where the temperature does not get too hot or too cold. At temperatures above 75 degrees, a guinea pig could die of heatstroke. Keep the cage well ventilated but not drafty. Since cavies are more active during the daytime, place the cage in a well lit area.
Bedding & Substrate
There are many pelleted and shredded paper substrates that make excellent bedding and are commercially available. Wood shavings are not recommended since guinea pigs may chew on the bedding which can lead to serious health problems. Some wood shavings also have sharp particles and can be abrasive to sensitive feet or get into the cavy’s eyes causing injury.
Water Bottle
Guinea pigs drink a lot of water. Not only do they drink it but they also play in it and love sitting in a water bowl. So if you use a bowl the dirty water must be changed more than once a day. A stoppered water bottle is a good alternative. The bottle should have a metal tube so your pet won’t chew it.
Food Bowl
These animals love to eat, but feeding them can sometimes be a challenge since they will often play in their food bowl. There are many different types and styles of food bowls available. A bowl that is difficult to spill or can be attached to the side of a cage will keep messes to a minimum.
Hide Area
Every cage should include at least one hide area per cavy. These hideaways reduce stress and provide your pet with a safe and quiet place to rest. You can use a commercially available hide or something as simple as a flower pot or a large PVC tube.
Toys & Exercise
Guinea pigs are playful animals, but not really interested in exercise. They do love to nibble and chew so unpainted and untreated wood chew sticks are a must. A variety of toys that they can climb over, push around or chew will keep your pets happy and entertained. One toy you do not want to get is an exercise wheel. Wheels are bad for a guinea pig’s spine and could cause injury.
Cleaning
You pets’ cage will most likely need cleaned at least once a week. Guinea pigs are clean animals and dislike a dirty cage. Replace the bedding, wash the water bottle, food dish, toys, and any other areas that may smell with soapy water. Be sure to dry everything before placing stuff back in the cage.

Food & Diet
Guinea pigs love to eat but are very particular about their food preferences. They are strict vegetarians eating plant materials only. They will forage throughout the day and consume large quantities so it is important that they always have grass, hay and food available. Do not be alarmed if you see your pet eating its own feces, this is normal and helps the cavy recycle necessary nutrients and minerals.
Pellets
There are several excellent pelleted guinea pig foods on the market. These foods have all the ingredients necessary for your cavy’s health, but often exclude vitamin C.
Hay
Hay is an important part of your pet’s diet. It helps keep the teeth worn down and satisfies his need to chew. It also provides necessary roughage. You should not feed coarse hay that can injure the soft tissues of the mouth or hay that is moldy or dirty.
Leafy Vegetables & Fruit
There should always be a little bit of leafy vegetables in the feed rack at all times. Guinea pigs don’t enjoy cold vegetables so let them warm to room temperature before feeding them to your pet. As a treat, your pet may enjoy fresh fruit like kiwi fruit, oranges, grapes, strawberries, peaches, apricots and melons.

Your guinea pig needs to have vitamin C to be a happy and healthy pet. Not providing this important supplement can be fatal. Luckily there are many supplements available as a liquid or chewable bites or treats.
Water
Guinea pigs drink a lot of water and a dry diet increases the need for water. Always provide more water than you think your pet will need.
Harmful Foods
Not all vegetables are good for your cavy. Avoid spinach, peanuts, beet tops, potatoes, iceberg lettuce, onions, garlic, cabbage and broccoli. Never feed your pet chocolate or candies.

Care Sheet
What do I need for my pet guinea pig?
Now that you have decided on a guinea pig as your pet you should have the cage and all the supplies necessary before bringing him home. This care sheet will guide you in having everything you need. Remember, cavies are chewers so choose his home accordingly.
Habitat
You will need a cage with at least 2 square feet of space for each guinea pig being housed in it. Always go with the biggest cage possible for a happy pet. Do not use wire mesh for the cage flooring.
A substrate or bedding for the bottom of the cage. Make sure you avoid wood shavings.
A stoppered or ceramic water bowl. Remember you guinea pig will play in the bowl and soil the water so a bottle may be a better choice.
A hay rack for hanging leafy greens, hay and grass to keep it clean and fresh.
A few wooden chew sticks or blocks plus some toys. Your pet will love toys he can nibble on, climb over, push around and bump with his nose.
A hide area for your pet to spend private time resting and feeling secure.
Food & Supplements
A commercial brand guinea pig food.
Hay and leafy green vegetables for your guinea pig to nibble on.
A vitamin C supplement.
Treats to add variety to your pets diet.

Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs are tail-less rodents that are native to the west coast of South America and since the mid-1800’s, laboratories have used them for research. The correct name for guinea pigs is Cavy, pronounced “kay-vee”.
Guinea pigs usually weigh around 3 ounces at birth, around 1-2 pounds full grown, and live for 5-6 years. An adult will measure 8-10 inches from the tip of its nose to the end of its rump. Their hair comes in a wide range of colors and the hair may be long, short or short and curly. Cavies have a very good sense of smell and sensitive hearing. They love to vocalize with squeals, chirps, squeaks, and whistles. Although not known for their intelligence, they do recognize their owners and will seek them out and return affection.
Guinea Pigs as Pets
Guinea pigs are cuddly, comical, and clever. They make wonderful pets for children and can be very social animals. The animals do better in pairs as they prefer company, so unless you have a lot of time to devote to your pet getting at least two is often a good idea. They are not expensive to own and the biggest expense is the initial setting up of housing. Guinea pigs are hardy pets so veterinarian expenses are minimal.
