Foreign AffairsPutin Warns United States Against Supplying Ukraine Longer Range Missiles by RedScorpion(op): 6:43pm On Jun 05, 2022
President Vladimir Putin warned the United States in an interview broadcast on Sunday that Russia would strike new targets if the West supplied longer-range missiles to Ukraine for use in high-precision mobile rocket systems.

The United States has ruled out sending its own or NATO forces to Ukraine but Washington and its European allies have supplied weapons to Kyiv such as drones, Howitzer heavy artillery, anti-aircraft Stinger and anti-tank Javelin missiles.

President Joe Biden last week said Washington would supply Ukraine with M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, after he received assurances from Kyiv that it would not be used to target Russia.

Putin said the arms shipments were "nothing new" and changed nothing but cautioned that there would be a response if the United States supplied longer-range munitions for the HIMARS systems which have a maximum range of up to 300 km (185 miles) or more.

If longer-range missiles are supplied, "we will strike at those targets which we have not yet been hitting," Putin told the Rossiya-1 state television channel in an interview.

Putin said the range of the Lockheed Martin HIMARS systems depended on the munitions supplied and that the range announced by the United States was around the same as Soviet-made missile systems that Ukraine already had.

"This is nothing new. It doesn't change anything in essence," Putin said. He said the arms merely replaced those that Russia had destroyed.

Putin did not identify the targets Russia would strike, but said the "fuss" around Western arms supplies was designed to drag out the conflict.

The U.S. Department of Defense said it was supplying Ukraine four M142 HIMARS systems along with the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System that it said had a range of over 40 miles (64 km) - double the range of the howitzers it supplied.

Foreign AffairsNATO Summit Not A Deadline For Turkey To Decide On Finland And Sweden Bids by RedScorpion(op): 3:36am On Jun 05, 2022
The upcoming NATO summit in Madrid later this month is not a deadline for Turkey to make a decision on Sweden and Finland’s membership applications, Presidential Spokesperson Ibrahim Kalın said Saturday.

Visiting Madrid ahead of the bloc’s summit, Kalın told Anadolu Agency (AA) that progress on the membership bids hinged on how Sweden and Finland respond to Turkish demands.

"We don't see ourselves in a time constraint like the NATO summit," Kalın said, adding that while the summit was important in addressing common issues like Russia's invasion of Ukraine and cooperation within the alliance, potential allies have to take steps to alleviate the concerns of current members.

"We don't feel like we are under any time pressure like 'let us get this done by the NATO summit.' What is important here is that Sweden and Finland openly, clearly and concretely put forth what kind of steps they will take regarding counterterrorism," he added.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said during a visit to Washington this week that he would convene senior officials from Finland, Sweden and Turkey in Brussels in the coming days to discuss the issue.

NATO leaders will convene on June 29-30 in Madrid. He said the bloc is in touch with Turkey to find a "united way" forward to address Ankara's concerns over Sweden and Finland's bid to join the pact.

Earlier, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said NATO was not an organization that could provide protection from terrorism, citing demonstrations and events organized by the PKK terrorist group in allied countries like France, Germany, the Netherlands and Greece, whose envoy to Ankara was summoned over the issue on Friday.

He said Ankara would not "fall for the same mistake" while PKK members "roam free" in Finland and Sweden.

The PKK is designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and European Union.

Sweden and Finland formally applied to join NATO on May 18, a decision spurred by Russia's war on Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24. But Turkey, a longstanding member of the alliance, has voiced objections to their membership bids, criticizing the countries for tolerating and even supporting terrorist groups.

Ankara has said Sweden and Finland must halt their support for the PKK and other groups, bar them from organizing any events on their territory, extradite those sought by Turkey on terrorism charges, support Ankara’s military and counterterrorism operations, and lift all arms exports restrictions.

Finland and Sweden have sought to negotiate a solution and other NATO capitals have said they remain confident that the objections raised by Turkey – which has NATO’s second-biggest military – can be overcome.

Foreign Affairs2 US Governors, Senate Minority Leader Said To Be In Wisconsin Gunman's Hit List by RedScorpion(op): 3:07am On Jun 05, 2022
The names of U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers appeared on a hit list kept by a man accused of fatally shooting a retired Wisconsin judge, authorities and local media said on Saturday.

"Yesterday our office was notified by law enforcement officials that Governor Whitmer's name appeared on the Wisconsin gunman's list," a spokesman for Whitmer told Reuters.

"While the news reports are deeply troubling, we will not comment further on an ongoing criminal investigation," he added.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice said retired judge John Roemer, 68, was found dead on Friday in his home after the local sheriff's office received a call about "an armed person and two shots fired in a Township of New Lisbon residence."

The department called the ex-judge's killing a "targeted" attack. It said that Douglas Uhde, 56, was found in the basement of Roemer's home with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect was taken to the hospital and a firearm was recovered at the scene.

On Saturday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said the accused gunman had a hit list including the name of McConnell while an ABC News affiliate reported it also included Evers.

The incident marked the latest high-profile case of gun violence in the United States, following mass shootings in recent weeks at a grocery story in New York, an elementary school in Texas and a medical building in Oklahoma that left dozens dead.

Gun safety advocates are pushing the U.S. government to take stronger measures to curb gun violence.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice said Uhde remained in critical condition at a medical facility.

"This ... does appear to be a targeted act and the individual who is a suspect appears to have had other targets as well," Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said at a Friday news conference. "It appears to be related to the judicial system,"

In April, a federal jury acquitted two men of conspiring to kidnap Whitmer in 2020 and deadlocked on the same charges for two other men.

Foreign AffairsRussia Must Not Be Humiliated In Ukraine, Says Emmanuel Macron by RedScorpion(op): 2:40am On Jun 05, 2022
Russia must not be humiliated in Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron has said, to allow an improvement in diplomatic relations between the west and Moscow whenever the war comes to an end.

The French president said his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, had made a “historic and fundamental” error in invading Ukraine, but that nevertheless a wider escalation in hostilities had to be avoided.

Giving an interview to a group of regional newspapers in his home country, Macron said: “We must not humiliate Russia so that the day the fighting stops, we can build a way out through diplomatic channels.”

The role of France was to be that of “a mediating power”, the president added, saying he had put “time and energy” into ensuring the conflict did not escalate into a wider war, including negotiating with the Russian president.

“I have lost count of the conversations I have had with Vladimir Putin since December,” Macron said. They amounted to 100 hours’ worth, he added, which were “at the request of” Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy

Macron has consistently sought to engage directly with Putin and has repeatedly called for a ceasefire in the conflict, including on an 80-minute phone call at the end of last month with the Russian leader and the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz.

That has led to periodic accusations that the French leader wants Ukraine to make concessions to secure a peace agreement, although the Élysée Palace says any peace agreement must be negotiated between Putin and Zelenskiy, showing “due respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”.

None of the discussions, however, appear to have borne fruit. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine passed the 100-day mark on Friday, with little sign of the war ending amid heavy fighting in the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk.

Macron said he believed Putin had “isolated himself” and did not know what to do next. “Isolating oneself is one thing, but being able to get out of it is a difficult path,” the French president added.

Foreign AffairsExclusive : Elon Musk Wants To Cut 10% Of Tesla Workforce. by RedScorpion(op): 10:27pm On Jun 04, 2022
Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants to slash jobs at the electric carmaker based on a "super bad feeling" he has about the economy, Reuters reported Friday.

Musk said he needs to cut about 10% of his workforce in an email sent to company executives, according to the Reuters report.

The memo, titled "pause all hiring worldwide," was sent two days after Musk panned remote work and said employees who don't return to their assigned offices should look for jobs elsewhere.

"If you don't show up, we will assume you have resigned," he said in a follow-up email to the company's workers.

Tesla shares tumbled more than 7% Friday on the report about anticipated layoffs. U.S. regulators are also probing Tesla over complaints that its electric vehicles are braking for no reason.

Tesla employs roughly 100,000 people worldwide, according to a May filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. A 10% workforce reduction would result in roughly 10,000 layoffs.

The report comes as other tech companies reverse their hiring plans amid economic uncertainty. Meta, Uber and Twitter have slowed or paused hiring, while Netflix, Peloton and Robinhood are laying off workers.

Shares tumbling

Tesla's stock has lost nearly one-third of its value since early April, shortly after Musk first suggested that he wanted to buy Twitter.

Tesla shares fell $55.66, or 7.2%, to $719.34 in early trading Friday. Shares were trading around $1,150 just two months ago.

Also Friday, government regulators reported that more than 750 Tesla owners have complained that cars operating on the automaker's partially automated driving systems have suddenly stopped on roadways for no apparent reason.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed the number in a detailed information request letter to Tesla that was posted on the agency's website.

It's the fourth formal investigation of the Texas automaker in the past three years, and NHTSA is supervising 23 Tesla recalls since January of 2021.

Foreign AffairsPutin Loses Faith In Top Generals Following High-profile Failures In Ukraine by RedScorpion(op): 3:20am On May 21, 2022
Putin Loses Faith in Top Generals Following High-Profile Failures in Ukraine.

The battlefield commanders who have survived the fighting in Ukraine so far now face suspensions and firing as Putin takes greater control of decision-making in the flagging war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has lost faith in his top general and has fired other senior commanders for their high-profile and embarrassing failures on the battlefield in Ukraine, British intelligence believes.

U.K. military intelligence reports that the Kremlin has fired Lt. Gen. Serhiy Kisel, commander of the elite 1st Guards Tank Army, for failing to capture Kharkiv.

International attention has focused on the strategically critical northeastern Ukrainian city in recent days following news Ukrainian forces capitalized on Russia’s retreat and had pushed the invading troopss back to their border.

The commander of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, Vice Admiral Igor Osipov, has also come under suspension likely for allowing the flagship cruiser Moskva to sink in April from an apparent missile attack – for which the Ukrainian military claims credit.

Perhaps most notably, Valeriy Gerasimov, the chief of the Russian General Staff – a position roughly analogous to the U.S. chairman of the Joint Chiefs – remains in his post but, British intelligence believes, “it is unclear whether he retains the confidence of President Putin.”

The damning assessment follows reports that at least a dozen Russian generals have died on the battlefield – a seemingly stunning fact that the Pentagon has downplayed as indicative of how the Kremlin goes to war combined with the dysfunctional state of a Soviet-era army.

And it comes amid growing belief that Putin himself is now directing the tactical decisions of his military as Russian forces continue to fail to meet their objectives, chiefly seizing control of the Ukrainian government, while facing growing pressure at home.

“A culture of cover-ups and scape-goating is probably prevalent within the Russian military and security system,” according to the assessment. “Many officials involved in the invasion of Ukraine will likely be increasingly distracted by efforts to avoid personal culpability for Russia’s operational set-backs.

The assessment suggested that the developments will likely place further strain on Russia's centralized model of command and control, as officers increasingly seek to defer key decisions to their superiors.

“It will be difficult for Russia to regain the initiative under these conditions,” it said.

Ukrainian officials have for weeks touted reports and images on social media that supposedly show Russian general officers among the battlefield casualties, including one widely shared instance in March in which a general’s corpse appeared to be left behind in the mud as his own troops relocated.

Mykhailo Podoliak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at the time tweeted the names of generals he says were killed, adding that these deaths show the Russian army “is fully unprepared & fights only with numbers & cruise missiles.”

A Pentagon official told reporters at the time that the composition of Russia’s army differs sharply from its Western counterparts, particularly American armed forces that delegate consequential decision-making authority to junior officers and rely heavily on the seasoned operational experience of senior enlisted non-commissioned officers.

“They don’t organize their military the way we do,” the official said, suggesting that Russia’s doctrine places its generals in hazardous situations more readily than for their American counterparts.

Only one American general died in combat during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maj. Gen. Harold Greene was killed in 2014 by an Afghan National Army member who opened fire on dignitaries visiting a headquarters in Afghanistan during an inspection tour.

His killing by foreign combatants marked the first among general officers since the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon, and it was the first on foreign territory since the Vietnam War.

Foreign AffairsPentagon Denies Ukrainian Claims Of ‘plan To Destroy’ Russia’s Black Sea Fleet by RedScorpion(op): 3:00am On May 21, 2022
Pentagon Denies Ukrainian Claims of ‘Plan to Destroy’ Russia’s Black Sea Fleet

The Defense Department did not, however, rule out the potential shipment to Ukraine of new weapons that would fundamentally change naval battle in the ongoing war.

The Pentagon on Friday denied that it is forging plans to destroy one of Russia’s most consequential navy fleets, despite assertions to that effect from the Ukrainian government. But officials did leave open the possibility of new weapons shipments that would dramatically change the scope of naval warfare in the region.

Anton Herashchenko, an official adviser to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, tweeted late Thursday, “The US is preparing a plan to destroy the Black Sea Fleet,” according to a translation, in an attempt to force access to strategic ports that Russia has blockaded.

“I can tell you definitively that that’s not true,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters Thursday afternoon when asked about the Ukrainian claim.

Kirby did not, however, refute subsequent statements from Herashchenko – and confirmed by anonymous American officials to several news outlets – that the U.S. is considering sending specialized anti-ship Harpoon missiles with a range of 200 miles in future weapons shipments to Ukraine.

Some concerns have emerged about whether sending those particular weapons would provoke a response from Russia against U.S. ships or regional interests.

“We are talking to the Ukrainians every day,” Kirby added, revealing that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had spoken with Ukrainian Minister of Defense Oleksiy Reznikov earlier on Friday. “When we have decisions, we come right out here and issue a press release.”

Control of the seas off Ukraine’s coast has become among the most high-profile issues facing Western officials supporting the government in Kyiv against the Russian invaders.

Despite some successes in recent weeks – notably the sinking of the Russian flagship Mosvka – warships loyal to Moscow have succeeded in exerting pressure on Ukraine.

“They continue to be able to, from a maritime perspective, be able to blockade major Ukrainian ports, like Odessa,” Kirby said. “There’s still nothing getting in economically.”

British intelligence asserted this week that Russian President Vladimir Putin had fired an admiral overseeing Black Sea Fleet operations following the Moskva’s sinking, among other shake-ups in Russia’s military leadership involved in the Ukraine invasion.

Russian state news on Friday highlighted statements from friendly lawmakers in the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula celebrating Russia’s control of the Black Sea and adjacent Sea of Azov.

And Moscow on Thursday announced the frigate Admiral Makarov will take over as flagship of the Black Sea Fleet following the Moskva’s sinking – reportedly from a missile strike for which Ukraine has claimed credit.

Foreign AffairsU.S. Says Turkey's Approach To Sweden, Finland NATO Bid Not A Bilateral Topic by RedScorpion(op): 2:29am On May 21, 2022
Turkey's approach to the NATO accession process of Sweden and Finland is not a bilateral issue between Washington and Ankara, the U.S. State Department said on Friday, but added that Washington was speaking with Ankara and it remained confident that the dispute would be overcome.

Finland and Sweden say they have been spurred into joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization by Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, reversing generations of military non-alignment to bring about the biggest shakeup in European security in decades.

Turkey surprised NATO allies last week by objecting to the move, pressing Sweden to halt support for Kurdish militants it considers part of a terrorist group. It pressed both Sweden and Finland to lift their bans on some arms sales to Turkey.

While the problem officially is between Sweden, Finland and Turkey, many analysts have said Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan may be aiming to use this moment to push Washington to act on some of the long-standing issues that have weighed on bilateral ties between the two NATO allies.

Those issues include ending U.S. support for the Kurdish militia in Syria that Ankara sees as terrorists, lifting of the U.S. sanctions imposed after Ankara's purchase of the S-400 Russian defense system as well as potentially expediting Ankara's request to buy F-16s.

"The question of Turkey's approach to the NATO accession of Finland and Sweden, that is not a bilateral question between the United States and Turkey," State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a telephone briefing.

His comments are similar to those by U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, who on Thursday told reporters, "this is not a U.S. issue," but added that Washington wanted to see it resolved and it was ready to take action to be supportive.

Western leaders have expressed confidence that Ankara's objections will not be a road block for the NATO accession process of the Nordic countries without spelling out how Turkey's position could be changed.

"For their parts, Finland, Sweden are working directly with Turkey, but we're also talking to Turkey about this issue," Price said, but did not give further details about the talks aside from saying Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu had held a "good, constructive" conversation on Wednesday in New York.

"We remain confident that Turkey's concerns will be addressed, and that we'll be able to reach consensus as an alliance on the accession process for Finland and Sweden," Price added.

Foreign AffairsPutin Apologizes To Israel For Hitler Comments As Zelensky Slams Nazi Rhetoric by RedScorpion(op): 8:27pm On May 05, 2022
Russian President Vladimir Putin offered a rare apology on Thursday to Israel over recent antisemitic comments from Russia’s foreign minister connecting Nazi leader Adolf Hitler to Judaism, according to the Israeli prime minister.

The reported apology came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of using Nazi propaganda and antisemitic tropes to justify the invasion as Russian leaders repeatedly compare Zelensky to Hitler.

During a phone conversation between Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, the Russian president apologized for remarks made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who recently dismissed Zelensky’s Jewish faith by claiming that “Hitler also had Jewish blood” — a discredited antisemitic claim.

“The Prime Minister accepted President Putin’s apology for Lavrov’s remarks and thanked him for clarifying the President’s attitude towards the Jewish people and the memory of the Holocaust,” according to a news release from Bennett’s office.

The Kremlin did not include a mention of the reported apology in the Russian readout of the call ahead of the Victory Day holiday on May 9 but included a reference to the Holocaust.

“Vladimir Putin and Naftali Bennett emphasized the special significance of this date for the peoples of both countries, who carefully preserve the historical truth about the events of those years and honor the memory of all the fallen, including victims of the Holocaust,” according to the Kremlin.

In a Wednesday interview with Fox News, Zelensky was asked about Russia’s false claim that the invasion of Ukraine is a de-Nazification campaign. Zelensky said Lavrov was using tactics similar to those employed by Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels during World War II.

“These are the showings of chauvinism and nationalism,” Zelensky told Fox reporter Griff Jenkins. “They are following the same concept of Goebbels and using the same methodology, and the reaction I think is to weaken the world to these phrases of Lavrov.”

Israeli officials this week had voiced anger and demanded an apology from the Russian government for claiming that Hitler, the leader of the Nazis’ Third Reich and the perpetrator of the Holocaust, was of Jewish ancestry.

Foreign AffairsRe: "There Would Be Know More Russia"-trump Insists by RedScorpion(f): 4:35pm On May 05, 2022
SwattiLee:
Apologies for coming late. Been busy.

Ukraine.

Trump might have instigated Zelensky to probe the Bidens. Even if he did, he surely didn't contravene any law talkless of using that as an impeachable offence. Come to think of it, the Bidens' dealings was kinda dirty hence the probe.

That Putin made him witheld the grant is the media's making. I don't know if you noticed that under Trump administration, the United States cut down on their foreign aids greatly. He always believe that nothing should be done absolutely free and I wouldn't blame him, because of his business background.

Two examples are Paris climate Accord and Iran. The major reason he pulled out of the two was the huge financial burden that the United States government singlehandedly shouldered and yet America is trillions of dollars in debt. But the Dems and the media wouldn't tell us all this. One thing is certain, the model America is using presently is dangerous and not sustainable. If she goes on donating money that way to every country, she would soon implode. And why I so much love his AMERICA FIRST mantra.

On him being an authoritarian.

Not really but he's got his own fair share of human weakness. He's someone that has the characteristics of a King and a very shrewd man. See, we need to really understand people (like them or not) to a certain extent to understand their actions. Or else we would allow bias, prejudices and emotions becloud our judgement.

The reason he's still adamant the the last general election was manipulated is simple. If I were your opponent, and for four good years I instigated agendas just to malign your person and and disparage your office and even went ahead to sponsor a fake dossier and use it against you till the end of your tenure just to make people believe that the election that got you elected was fraudulent, you would be very unsuspecting to still believe anything good will come from me.

It's important we put ourselves in other people's shoes sometimes. It's the easiest thing to criticize. Trump's certainly not a perfect person. But the Dems, I simply can't find the best adjective for them...

November election.

Smiles. Either the Senate or the House is going Red.

But barring unforeseen circumstances, the Congress (both) is going Red.

The overturning of Roe Vs. Wade would almost certainly favour the GOP.

Americans in general (Dems, GOP and Independents) are not happy with how Biden is running the country. It's widely believed that he's weak and incompetent.
1 - America First that was making the nation Second.

Ok I agree with the American First Mantra.

And I also believe that a Father Christmas approach by the US to other countries is unsustainable.

But Trump as current president would have been a disaster for the NATO Alliance. He was planning to withdraw from the alliance and cut ties with South Korea.

Even if European partners were not paying their fair share, there are other diplomatic channels to make them live up to expectation rather than threatening to withdraw from a scared alliance like NATO against the wish of the American people.

https://www.institutmontaigne.org/en/blog/trump-does-not-believe-nato-he-has-even-sought-divide-it

Maybe that is what his Puppet master in Kremlin instructed him to do.

Putin would have been very Happy if he had won re-election and pulled the plug on NATO.

America would be worse of, if he had carried out his plans and abandoned international allies.

During his time in office, America's sphere of influence and leadership role was dwindling because he was cutting ties or planning to cut ties that were sacrosanct to America's God Given position as World No 1 and Leader.

Trump would have find it difficult to rally together NATO Allies to support Ukraine the same way Biden have done because there was disunity and distrust between the US and her allies.

European countries found no leadership in the US and it made them to take their destiny into their hands.

Trump was tough and outspoken against allies but was very soft on Putin.

2 - Authoritarian Trump

Like you rightly said, Trump saw himself as the king of America that must stay on his throne.

And one bad thing with monarchy is the temptation to become Authoritarian....... Trump fell for that temptation

Only Authoritarian leaders tell their supporters to storm the hallowed Chambers of the Congress and cause chaos.

Only Authoritarian leaders would ask his VP or other high ranking officials to overturn an election when he know that it is wrong and they don't have the power to legally do it.

Only Authoritarian leaders like Trump would in a democratic nation violently disperse protesters in front of the white house and walk down across the road for a photo-op in front of a church with a Bible in his hand.

Trump was always praising his fellow Authoritarian leaders and the sweet words he said about Putin would be used against him in 2024

3 - November Mid term elections : cheesy cheesy

We are waiting for you guys.

We are ready for the Red Wave.

But American voters understand that the current economic development is not an isolated incident in the US but it is global.

Inflation is going up globally.

Interest rate is being increased by almost all major central bank.

Putin's Price Hikes at the fuel pump is a global phenomenon not only in America.

All Democrats need to do is to motivate their troops and undecided voters to come out and vote.

That is exactly what the ban on Abortion Rights would do for Democrats.

The Supreme Court is largely Republican leaning and Democrats feel shortchanged. The actions of the Court if confirmed would motivate Democrats and undecided voters who believe in Abortion Rights to make their voice heard through the ballot box.

Nonetheless let's wait until November because there is still time for a single event to turn the political tide.

Foreign AffairsTaiwan Says It Can’t Afford New US Anti-submarine Helicopters by RedScorpion(op): 1:20pm On May 05, 2022
Taiwan signaled Thursday that it had abandoned a plan to buy advanced new anti-submarine warfare helicopters from the United States, saying they were too expensive.

Taiwan had earlier said it was planning to buy 12 MH-60R anti-submarine helicopters, made by Lockheed Martin Corp LMT.N unit Sikorsky, but Taiwanese media reported that the United States had rejected the sale as not being in line with the island’s needs.

Asked in parliament about recent changes to Taiwan’s purchases of new U.S. weapons, Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng mentioned the helicopter case first.

“The price is too high, beyond the scope of our country’s ability,” he said.

Two other arms purchases have also been delayed — M109A6 Medium Self-Propelled Howitzer artillery systems, and mobile Stinger anti-aircraft missiles.

The Raytheon Technologies’ RTX.N Stingers are in hot demand in Ukraine, where they have been used against Russian aircraft, but U.S. supplies have shrunk and producing more of the anti-aircraft weapons faces significant hurdles.

Chiu said they had already signed the contract for the Stingers and paid for them, and they would press the United States to deliver them.

“We don’t view arms sales as a trifling matter, and we have back-up plans,” he added, without elaborating.

Taiwan says the United States has offered it alternatives to the M109A6, including truck-based rocket launchers made by Lockheed Martin called the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS.

Chiu said they were still considering their options on that.

Taiwan, claimed by China as its own territory, is undertaking a military modernization program to improve its capabilities to fend off a Chinese attack, including with precision weapons like missiles.

President Tsai Ing-wen has championed the concept of “asymmetric warfare,” which involves developing high-tech, highly mobile weapons that are hard to destroy and can deliver precision attacks.

U.S. officials have been pushing Taiwan to modernize its military so it can become a “porcupine,” hard for China to attack.

China has been ramping up its own military modernization and pressure against Taiwan as it seeks to force the democratically governed island to accept Beijing’s rule.
