Evidence is growing that Russian soldiers are using rape as a weapon of war in Ukraine. In areas retaken from Russian troops, civilians are giving horrifying accounts of sexual violence. DW's Rebecca Ritters heard the story of one young woman in Bucha. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.dw.com/en/russian-troops-accused-of-weaponizing-rape-in-ukraine/av-61668504 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3l7oAxACmlY When Russian troops invaded Ukraine and began closing in on its capital, Kyiv, Andrii Dereko begged his 22-year-old stepdaughter Karina Yershova to leave the suburb where she lived. But Yershova insisted she wanted to remain in Bucha, telling him: "Don't talk nonsense, everything will be fine -- there will be no war," he said. With her tattoos and long brown hair, Yershova stood out in a crowd, her stepfather said, adding that despite living with rheumatoid arthritis, she had a fiercely independent spirit: "She herself decided how to live." Yershova worked at a sushi restaurant in Bucha, and hoped to earn her university degree in the future, Dereko said: "She wanted to develop herself." As Russian soldiers surrounded Bucha in early March, Yershova hid in an apartment with two other friends. On one of the last occasions Dereko and his wife, Olena, heard from Yershova, she told them she had left the apartment to get food from a nearby supermarket. "We did not think that Russians would reach such a point that they would shoot civilians," he said. "We all hoped that at least they would not touch women and children -- but the opposite happened." When weeks went by without a word from Yershova, the family became desperate for news. Her mother left a message on Facebook begging anyone who knew what had happened to her to get in touch. She was told by friends that images of a dead woman with similar tattoos to Yershova's -- which included a rose on her forearm -- had been posted on a Telegram group set up by a detective in Bucha who was trying to identify hundreds of bodies found in the town after Russian troops withdrew from the area two weeks ago. Dereko says the images, seen by CNN, show his stepdaughter's mutilated body. Police told the family she had been killed by Russian soldiers. It looked like she was tortured or put up a fight, he said. "They mutilated her. They shot her in the leg, and then gave her a tourniquet to stop her bleeding. And then they shot her in the temple." Dereko also believes Yershova was sexually abused by Russian troops. "The [police] investigator hinted" that she had been raped, he said. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cJ_YmhL62Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90K4l6npTCI https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2022/04/22/europe/ukraine-sexual-violence-allegations-russia-cmd-intl/index.html

A senior U.S. official is warning that Russia plans to annex much of eastern Ukraine later this month. Russia plans to annex much of eastern Ukraine later this month, a senior U.S. official warned, and the Mariupol steel mill that is the city’s last stronghold of resistance came under renewed assault a day after the first evacuation of civilians from the plant. Michael Carpenter, U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, said Monday that the U.S. believes the Kremlin also will recognize the southern city of Kherson as an independent republic. Neither move would be recognized by the United States or its allies, he said. Russia is planning to hold sham referendums in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions that would “try to add a veneer of democratic or electoral legitimacy” and attach the entities to Russia, Carpenter said. He also said there were signs that Russia would engineer an independence vote in Kherson. Mayors and local legislators there have been abducted, internet and cellphone service has been severed and a Russian school curriculum will soon be imposed, Carpenter said. Ukraine’s government says Russia has introduced its ruble as currency there. More than 100 people — including elderly women and mothers with small children — left Mariupol's rubble-strewn Azovstal steelworks Sunday and set out in buses and ambulances for the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporizhzhia, about 140 miles (230 kilometers) to the northwest. Mariupol Deputy Mayor Sergei Orlov told the BBC that the evacuees were making slow progress. Authorities gave no explanation for the delay. At least some of the civilians were apparently taken to a village controlled by Russia-backed separatists. The Russian military said some chose to stay in separatist areas, while dozens left for Ukrainian-held territory. In the past, Ukraine has accused Moscow’s troops of taking civilians against their will to Russia or Russian-controlled areas. The Kremlin has denied it. The Russian bombardment of the sprawling plant by air, tank and ship resumed after the partial evacuation, Ukraine’s Azov Battalion, which is helping to defend the mill, said on the Telegram messaging app. Orlov said high-level negotiations were underway among Ukraine, Russia and international organizations on evacuating more people. The steel-plant evacuation, if successful, would be rare progress in easing the human cost of the almost 10-week war, which has caused particular suffering in Mariupol. Previous attempts to open safe corridors out of the southern port city and other places have broken down, with Ukrainian officials accusing Russian forces of shooting and shelling along agreed-on evacuation routes. Before the weekend evacuation, overseen by the United Nations and the Red Cross, about 1,000 civilians were believed to be in the plant along with an estimated 2,000 Ukrainian defenders who have refused Russian demands they surrender. As many as 100,000 people overall may still be in Mariupol, which had a prewar population of more than 400,000. Russian forces have pounded much of the city into rubble, trapping civilians with little food, water, heat or medicine. Some Mariupol residents left on their own, often in damaged private cars. As sunset approached, Mariupol resident Yaroslav Dmytryshyn rattled up to a reception center in Zaporizhzhia in a car with a back seat full of youngsters and two signs taped to the back window: “Children” and “Little ones.” “I can’t believe we survived,” he said, looking worn but in good spirits after two days on the road. “There is no Mariupol whatsoever,'' he said. “Someone needs to rebuild it, and it will take millions of tons of gold.” He said they lived just across the railroad tracks from the steel plant. “Ruined,” he said. “The factory is gone completely.” Anastasiia Dembytska, who took advantage of the cease-fire to leave with her daughter, nephew and dog, said she could see the steelworks from her window, when she dared to look. “We could see the rockets flying” and clouds of smoke over the plant, she said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Greek state television that remaining civilians in the steel plant were afraid to board buses, fearing they would be taken to Russia. He said the U.N. assured him they could go to areas his government controls. Mariupol lies in the Donbas, Ukraine’s eastern industrial heartland, and is key to Russia’s campaign in the east. Its capture would deprive Ukraine of a vital port, allow Russia to establish a land corridor to the Crimean Peninsula, which it seized from Ukraine in 2014, and free up troops for fighting elsewhere. More than 1 million people, including nearly 200,000 children, have been taken from Ukraine to Russia, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Monday, according to state-owned news agency TASS. Defense Ministry official Mikhail Mizintsev said that number included 11,550 people, including 1,847 children, in the previous 24 hours, “without the participation of the Ukrainian authorities.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2022-05-03/us-official-russia-plans-to-annex-parts-of-eastern-ukraine%3fcontext=amp

Ukraine Says Drone Destroyed 2 Russian Ships in Black Sea, Releases Video A Ukrainian drone destroyed two Russian Raptor-class patrol ships near Snake Island on Monday, Ukraine's military chief said. "Two Russian Raptor-class boats were destroyed at dawn today near Zmiinyi (Snake) Island," the Chief of General Staff Valeriy Zaluzhniy wrote on his social media channels. Zaluzhniy posted a 17-second video that reportedly shows the moment a Ukrainian Bayraktar drone struck two Russian Raptor fast-attack craft near Snake Island, in the Black Sea, early on Monday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btnBwUd3Fjw "#Bayraktar works," the military chief wrote, referring to the Bayraktar TB2, an unmanned combat aerial vehicle manufactured by a Turkish company that reportedly helped sink Russia's flagship cruiser Moskva on April 14. Ukraine has bought dozens of the drones from Turkey since 2019, according to Al Jazeera. Zaluzhniy said the drone struck two Raptor-class assault boats, which are built by Russian shipbuilder Pella. The high-speed patrol boats are capable of engaging in search-and-rescue, anti-sabotage, and anti-terrorism operations. "Together to victory!" Zaluzhniy added. The Russian patrol ships were reportedly destroyed near Snake Island, where Ukrainian border guards told the Russian warship Moskva to "go f**k yourself" before they were captured, and subsequently returned to Ukraine in a prisoner exchange. Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, is located some 30 miles off the southern tip of the Ukrainian mainland. It is of strategic importance due to its location near Romanian territory in the northwestern Black Sea. Russian officials have yet to comment on the reports. Newsweek reached out to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for comment. The incident comes weeks after the flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet sank shortly after Ukraine claimed to have dealt significant damage to the vessel with Neptune missiles. The Middle East Eye reported that the TB2 Bayraktar was used to assist in the sinking of the Moskva "Ukraine's anti-ship missile Neptune has some guiding issues. A TB2 Bayraktar must have resolved it by pinpointing the ship," the news outlet reported, citing an unnamed source. Newsweek has been unable to independently verify the reports. Russian officials claimed that the Soviet-era vessel was damaged after a fire onboard caused ammunition to detonate. The cause remains disputed. The British defense ministry in an intelligence update on Monday said it is likely that more than a quarter of the Kremlin's battalion tactical groups assisting with the Ukraine war have been "rendered combat ineffective." "Some of Russia's most elite units, including the VDV Airborne Forces, have suffered the highest levels of attrition," the update said. "It will probably take years for Russia to reconstitute these forces." https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsweek.com/ukraine-drone-destroyed-russian-ships-black-sea-snake-island-video-1702557%3famp=1 |

Please don't insult the intelligence of your people.... Deltans are not blind and can clearly see the failure of the APC led government and Ovie Omo - Agege was always romancing the architects of this failed government... We all knew that the only reason he desperately wanted to be deputy Senate president was because of his own personal ambition to contest the governorship seat in 2023. He never had any real desire to positively impact the lives of his constituents..... Only a blind fellow would not see the political games that Omo- Agege have been playing just to boost his image and CV as he plans to run as governor of Delta State. He is welcome to the governorship race but Delta State would remain a PDP state thanks to the catastrophic results of the APC government in which he (Omo - Agege) has played a major role in. |

Russia does not consider itself to be at war with NATO, but NATO does,’ Lavrov tells Al-Arabiya in an exclusive interview. He brushed aside UN chief Antonio Guterres’ proposals for humanitarian assistance and evacuation of civilians, saying: “There is no need for anybody to provide help to open humanitarian corridors. There is only one problem … humanitarian corridors are being ignored by Ukrainian ultranationalists. “We appreciate the interest of the secretary-general to be helpful … (We have) explained … what is the mechanism for them to monitor how the humanitarian corridors are announced.” Asked about the risks of war spilling into Moldova after a series of explosions rattled a breakaway border region within the country, Lavrov said: “Moldova should worry about its own future … because they are being pulled into NATO.” In an hour-long interview which aired on Friday night, Lavrov offered the Russian government’s perspective of the Ukraine conflict, which is now into its third month, having already claimed tens of thousands of lives, civilians as well as soldiers, on both sides. “Unfortunately, NATO, it seems, considers itself to be at war with Russia,” he said. “NATO and EU leaders, many of them, in England, in the US, Poland, France, Germany and of course EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell, they bluntly, publicly and consistently say, ‘Putin must fail, Russia must be defeated.’ When you use this terminology, I believe you think that you are at war with the person who you want to be defeated.” The Russian government has said its “special military operation” in Ukraine is aimed at protecting Russia’s security and that of Russian-speaking people in the eastern Donbas region. Western nations have accused Russia of invading a sovereign country and of committing war crimes. Since the invasion began on February 24, the US, UK and EU have sanctioned more than 1,000 Russian individuals and businesses and wealthy businessmen, with the US banning all Russian oil and gas imports. The financial measures are designed to damage Russia’s economy and penalize President Vladimir Putin, high-ranking officials, and people who have benefited from his rule. Lavrov said: “To believe that this latest outrage and the wave of sanctions, which eventually showed the real face of the West which, as far as I now understand, has always been Russian-phobic, to believe that this latest wave of sanctions is going to make Russia cry uncle and to beg for being pardoned, those planners are lousy and of course they don’t know anything about foreign policy of Russia and they don’t know anything about how to deal with Russia.” The conflict has prompted NATO members and allies to pledge billions of dollars in military support to Ukraine. Weapons systems being supplied to Ukrainian forces include surface-to-air missiles, heavy artillery and surveillance equipment. The Biden administration has agreed with Western allies to hold monthly meetings to assess the needs of the government in Kyiv, raising fears that the war in Ukraine will, as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg put it, “drag on and last for months and years.” NATO says it will do all that it can to support Ukraine while ensuring that the war does not spill over beyond its borders into neighboring countries. But Lavrov said that NATO’s cooperation with Ukraine was little more than “an instrument to contain Russia and deter Russia and irritate Russia.” He said that Russia knew the routes being used to supply Ukraine with arms, and “as soon as these weapons are reaching Ukrainian territory, they are fair game for our special operation.” Lavrov said Russia has put forward many proposals to end the war in Ukraine but drawn a blank so far. Ukraine was at fault for the stalled peace talks, he said, blaming what he said was the government’s changing negotiating positions. Russia has accused the Pentagon of funding and developing biological weapons in a number of laboratories across Ukraine. In January this year, the US denied the accusations and claimed that the laboratories are there to “reduce the threat of biological weapons proliferation.” Lavrov categorically rejected the US assertions. Lavrov also accused the West of sabotaging the peace attempts, claiming that negotiations in Istanbul last month had been progressing on issues of Russian territorial claims and security guarantees until Ukrainian diplomats backtracked at the behest of the West. “We are stuck because of their desire to play games all the time,” he said. “Because of the instructions (the Ukrainian representatives) get from Washington, from London, from some other capitals, not to accelerate the negotiations.” Lavrov reiterated the Putin government’s position that Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine is aimed at protecting the two self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in Donbas. “The goal of our operation, it was announced openly, is to protect these two republics and to make sure that no threat will ever emanate from the Ukrainian territory to the security of these people and to security of the Russian Federation,” he said. In late February, President Putin recognized the region, allowing Russian troops to be present in those territories. Russia has been aiming to protect the two republics because “they have been under attack from the Ukrainian regime for a long, long eight years,” Lavrov said “When the coup happened in 2014, they said they don’t want to have anything to do with these people who came to power illegally and they said, ‘leave us alone, we want to understand what is going on.’ They never attacked the rest of Ukraine.” Lavrov was referring to the overthrow of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014 after months of protests in Kyiv’s Independence Square, or Maidan, against his refusal to sign an agreement that would have integrated Ukraine more closely with the EU. Around the same time, Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine and threw its support behind the Donbas insurgency. Since then, Donetsk and Luhansk have been controlled by separatist governments backed by Moscow. “The (leaders of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics) were (proclaimed) terrorists, an anti-terrorist operation was launched by the butcher leader who came to power by force through illegal means, and for eight long years they have been victims of Ukrainian aggression, killing like 13,000 or 14,000 civilians, destroying civilian infrastructure and many, many other crimes were committed by the Ukrainian regime against them,” Lavrov said. He said that Russia’s “special operation” was a “response to what NATO was doing in Ukraine to prepare this country for a very aggressive posture against the Russian Federation.” Referring to the Ukraine government he said: “They were given offensive arms, including the arms which can reach the Russian territory, military bases were being built, including on the Sea of Azov, and many dozens of military exercises, many of them on Ukrainian territory, were conducted under NATO auspices. “Most of these exercises were designed against the interests of the Russian Federation, so the purpose of this operation is to make sure that those plans do not materialize.” Tracing the roots of the Ukraine conflict, Lavrov said: “During all these years we have been initiating draft treaties, draft agreements with NATO, with countries of the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe and lately in December last year we proposed another initiative to the US and to NATO to conclude treaties with both of them on security guarantees to all countries in the Euro-Atlantic space without joining any military alliance.” He was referring to the OSCE, the regional security-oriented intergovernmental organization with observer status at the UN whose mandate includes issues such as arms control, promotion of human rights, freedom of the press, and free and fair elections. “Every time we initiated these steps, they were basically rejected with more or less polite behavior. In 2009, we proposed the European Security Treaty which NATO refused to consider and the treaty actually was about codifying something to which all OSCE countries subscribed at the top level.” According to Lavrov, Russia had suggested that countries be given the right to choose their alliances and not to strengthen their security at the expense of the security of another country, meaning that “no single organization in Europe can pretend to be a dominant player in this geopolitical space.” Lavrov said NATO responded to Russia by saying that there would be no legally binding security guarantees outside NATO, which he believes makes the OSCE “just lip service.” He said that the last such attempt by Russia took place in December 2021, before launching the operation in Ukraine, as a response to the “increasing tension and confrontation” over the years. This Russian initiative, according to Lavrov, was rejected by NATO because it did not want to sacrifice its “open doors policy,” which “does not exist in the Washington Treaty (which forms the basis of NATO)” and used as a “cover to promote NATO expansionist plans.” “NATO, despite its promises and promises of its leaders, was moving closer and closer to the Russian border and they were telling us, ‘Don’t be afraid, we are a defensive alliance and we will pose no threat to your security.’” He acknowledged that NATO was a defensive alliance when there was a Berlin Wall and a “geopolitical wall between NATO and the Warsaw Pact” after World War II. But “when the Warsaw Pact disappeared, when the Soviet Union ceased to exist, NATO decided that the line of defense should be moved to the east and they did move this line of defense five times.” “Foreign Secretary of Britain Liz Truss one of these days stated that NATO must be a global player so we can listen for so many times about the defensive nature of this alliance but this is a lie.” Lavrov accused the Ukraine government of “cancelling everything Russian,” including “the language, education, media and day-to-day use of the Russian language was made an administrative offense.” Elaborating on the accusation, he said: “The Ukrainian regime intensified, at the end of last year and early this year, shelling of the eastern territories of the country in Donbas, in the worst violations of the Minsk Agreements which were signed in February 2015 and endorsed by the Security Council resolution. When they were targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, schools, hospitals, kindergartens, we didn’t have any other choice.” Lavrov cautioned that his remarks that the risks of a nuclear conflict should not be “underestimated” if the US and its allies continued to arm Ukraine should not be taken out of context. “We were never playing with such dangerous things. We all should insist on the statements made by the P5 (UN Security Council permanent members), that never ever there could be a nuclear war. But to make sure that this is the case, the West must discipline speakers like our Ukrainian and Polish colleagues, who see no danger in playing with such very, very risky words.” Lavrov said Western media outlets were misconstruing his words but “we are used to it.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.arabnews.com/node/2073391/amp

Detuner:Hmmmm So NATO is a Toothless bulldog... ? Ok So why did Russia not attack Turkey.... ? Since Russia claimed that the fighter jets were in the Syrian airspace, why did they not retaliate and attack Turkey. The answer is very simple.... They don't want a fight with the NATO Alliance you referred to as a Toothless bulldog. The day Russia would attack little Estonia or Latvia or Lithuania, then the world would know that NATO is a Sleeping Lion that should not be messed with. Yes the US is using NATO as a tool to advance it's foreign policy and rightly so because it is the biggest player and contributor. If Russia or China were to be the lead nation in NATO, they would also use the Alliance to advance their foreign policy...... Truth be told. we must understand that Russia and NATO have mutual respect for each other. They try as much as possible to avoid conflict with each other because that would ultimately lead to 3rd world war. NATO was formed to curb the excesses and perceived aggression of the USSR (Russia). So both sides are careful with whatever action they take. I see some Nairalanders are clamouring for a 3rd world war and I laugh. That would not favour anyone.... Including Africa.. Lastly, Sweden have the right according to international laws to shoot down any Russian fighter jet that violates it's airspace... If they shoot it down today, Russia cannot do them anything because Putin's Russia does not want to be seen as the Aggressor that is Invading every nation......... Unless his madness has reached a concentrated level And such a move would quickly push Sweden and Finland to Join the NATO Alliance which Russia does not want. |
A Russian reconnaissance plane briefly violated Sweden’s airspace on Friday, Swedish defense officials said on Saturday, as the Scandinavian country ponders a bid for NATO membership after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “A Russian AN-30 propeller plane violated Swedish airspace on Friday evening,” the Swedish defense ministry said in a statement, adding that its teams had followed the incident and photographed it. The ministry said the plane was flying east of Bornholm, a Danish island in the Baltic, before it headed toward Swedish territory. “It is totally unacceptable to violate Swedish airspace,” public television SVT quoted Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist as saying. “This action is unprofessional and given the general security situation very inappropriate. Swedish sovereignty must always be respected.” In a similar incident in early March four Russian warplanes violated Swedish airspace over the Baltic Sea. Sweden and neighboring Finland are both considering NATO membership following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Moscow has warned that such a move would have consequences, without giving specifics. https://www.google.com/amp/s/english.alarabiya.net/amp/News/world/2022/04/30/Russian-spy-plane-violates-Swedish-air-space It would also be recalled that in 2015, two Russian fighter jets violated the Turkish airspace and one was shot down by Turkish Authorities after ignoring warnings. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-34912581.amp

Boris Becker has been jailed for two years and six months for hiding millions of pounds’ worth of assets after being made bankrupt in June 2017. Sentencing Becker, the judge, Deborah Taylor, said: “I take into account what has been described as your ‘fall from grace’. You have lost your career and reputation and all of your property as a result of your bankruptcy.” But she added: “You have not shown remorse, acceptance of your guilt and have sought to distance yourself from your offending and your bankruptcy. While I accept your humiliation as part of the proceedings, there has been no humility.” The former tennis star, sentenced under the Insolvency Act, will serve half the full prison term. He was found guilty of four charges by a jury at Southwark crown court this month but acquitted of a further 20 counts relating to his 2017 bankruptcy. He had faced a maximum prison sentence of seven years. Becker was handed a two-year suspended sentence for tax evasion and attempted tax evasion worth €1.7m (about £1.4m) in Germany in 2002. Referring to that conviction, the judge said: “You did not heed the warning you were given and the chance you were given by the suspended sentence and that is a significant aggravating factor.” Becker, wearing a striped tie in Wimbledon’s purple and green colours, walked into the courthouse hand in hand with his girlfriend, Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro. His son Noah had also attended, carrying a large Puma bag. The six-time grand slam champion had denied all the charges, saying he had cooperated with trustees tasked with securing his assets – even offering up his wedding ring – and had acted on expert advice. But at the sentencing hearing on Friday, the prosecutor, Rebecca Chalkley, said Becker had acted “deliberately and dishonestly” and that he was “still seeking to blame others”. The defence attorney, Jonathan Laidlaw, argued for leniency, saying his client had not spent money on a “lavish lifestyle” but rather on child support, rent and legal and business expenses. Becker, he told the court, had experienced “public humiliation” and had no future earnings potential. Becker’s bankruptcy stemmed from a €4.6m loan from a private bank in 2013, as well as about $1.6m borrowed from a British businessman the year after, according to testimony at the trial. During the trial Becker, said his $50m (£40m) career earnings had been swallowed up by payments for an “expensive divorce” and debts when he lost large chunks of his income after retirement. But the judge took into account the lengths to which Becker went to avoid paying his debts, including failing to declare his share in a £1m property in his home town of Leimen, Germany, hiding an €825,000 (almost £700,000) bank loan, worth £1.1m with interest, and concealing 75,000 shares in a tech business valued at £66,000. Matthew Carter, a partner in the National Bankruptcy Centre at the international audit, tax and advisory firm Mazars, said: “Today’s verdict reaffirms the serious consequences for those who fail to comply with their legal obligations as a bankrupt under the Insolvency Act.” “Mr Becker failed to declare significant assets in his bankruptcy and this sentence serves as a stark warning to those who attempt to hide their assets,” he added. “There are no winners in this unfortunate case, and it is imperative that anybody facing financial difficulty seeks specialist insolvency advice as early as possible to avoid issues escalating to this extent.” The chief executive of the Insolvency Service, Dean Beale, said: “Boris Becker’s sentence clearly demonstrates that concealing assets in bankruptcy is a serious offence for which we will prosecute and bring offenders to justice.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/apr/29/boris-becker-jailed-two-years-for-hiding-assets-after-bankruptcy
