Foreign Affairs / At Least 10 Dead In Fire At Baghdad Hospital For COVID Patients- Medical Sources by References: 11:09pm On Apr 24, 2021
At least 10 people were killed and another 30 injured in a fire at a hospital in southeastern Baghdad on Saturday that had been equipped to house COVID-19 patients, medical sources at three nearby hospitals said.

The fire at the Ibn Khatib hospital in the Diyala Bridge area of the Iraqi capital occurred after an accident caused an oxygen tank to explode, the sources said.

Many ambulances were rushing towards the hospital, ferrying away those hurt by the fire, a Reuters photographer nearby said.

Patients not injured in the incident were also being transferred out of the hospital, the medical sources said.
https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/least-10-dead-fire-baghdad-hospital-covid-patients-medical-sources-2021-04-24/

Iraq’s Interior Ministry said Sunday that 82 people died and 110 were injured in a catastrophic fire that broke out in the intensive care unit of a Baghdad hospital tending to severe coronavirus patients.

Negligence on the part of hospital authorities has been blamed for the Saturday night fire, which initial reports suggest was caused when an oxygen cylinder exploded in the ward of Ibn al-Khatib hospital. Iraq's prime minister fired key hospital officials hours after the catastrophic incident.

Among the dead were at least 28 patients on ventilators battling severe symptoms of the virus, tweeted Ali al-Bayati, a spokesman of the country's independent Human Rights Commission. The commission is a semi-official body.

Firefighters rushed to battle the flames that raged across the second floor of the hospital. Civil defense teams put out flames until the early hours of the morning.

Ambulances transported dozens of wounded. The Health Ministry said at least 200 people were rescued from the scene.

Doctors at the scene were frazzled by the chaos unfolding around them. They said numerous burned bodies were carried out by paramedics from the hospital floor.

The fire came as Iraq grapples with a severe second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Daily virus cases now average around 8,000, the highest since Iraq began recording infection rates early last year. At least 15,200 people have died of coronavirus in Iraq among a total of at least 100,000 confirmed cases.

In response to the fire, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi fired the director-general of the Baghdad Health Department in the al-Rusafa area, where the hospital is located. He also fired the director of Ibh al-Khatib Hospital and its director of engineering and maintenance, according to a statement from the Health Ministry and his office.

After the fire first broke out, Al-Khadhimi held an emergency meeting at the headquarters of the Baghdad Operations Command, which coordinates Iraqi security forces, according to a statement on his Twitter account.

In the meeting he said the incident amounted to negligence.

“Negligence in such matters is not a mistake, but a crime for which all negligent parties must bear responsibility,” he said. He gave Iraqi authorities 24 hours to present the results of an investigation.

U.N. envoy to Iraq Jeannine Hennis-Plasschaert expressed “shock and pain” over the incident in a statement and called for stronger protection measures in hospitals.

Politics / Ganduje To Establish Hermaphrodite Centre In Kano by References: 1:24pm On Apr 22, 2021
The Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has said that his administration will establish a hermaphrodite centre for people with intersex complications in the state.

He said the project will be executed in partnership with the TETFund Centre of Excellence of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS).

Ganduje, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Abba Anwar, on Thursday, made the disclosure while receiving seven people from the UDUS Centre, who were sponsored by the state and underwent successful surgical operations.

They were received at a special session with all members of the state Executive Council in attendance at Kano Government House on Wednesday.

The governor said, “We are now starting to establish a similar centre in Kano, in partnership with the Centre of Excellence, Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

“We are institutionalising the process and intervention. Our concern is always the health and happiness of our people.

“Kano state government was worried when we got information that there was one person with that intersex problem. We also learned that the person needed assistance for a surgical operation.

“We quickly intervened and took the patient to Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

“We then ordered for search for other similar cases in the state.

“We got six other cases, whom we also sent to UDUS, Centre of Excellence. Alhamdulillah all of them were successfully operated,” Ganduje added.

He further revealed that the state ordered for the search of more similar cases in the state, assuring that the state would sponsor their operations in the same centre, Sokoto.

All the seven people, according to him, were operated free of charge as the state had paid for all their bills.
