Travel / Rwandair Is The First African Airline To Vaccinate All Staff Against Covid-19 by References: 3:52pm On Mar 25, 2021
RwandAir is the first African airline to vaccinate all staff against Covid-19, which will position the carrier as one of the safest on the continent.

The airline began its vaccination rollout programme earlier this month targeting all staff and crew who received their first shot.

Non-airline staff at Kigali International Airport, the airline’s hub, have been vaccinated as well to ensure a safe and secure environment for all passengers.

The drive comes just after RwandAir announced it will be the first carrier in Africa to start trialling the IATA Travel Pass in April 2021 to enable the safe resumption of international travel.

Yvonne Manzi Makolo, CEO of RwandAir, said: “Rwanda’s rapid roll-out of the first consignment of vaccines to arrive in the country prioritized all frontline workers, including RwandAir’s staff and crew. The vaccination programme has been designed to ensure we provide a safe and secure environment for travellers, both in the air and on the ground.”

“We have carefully considered every customer touchpoint at Kigali International Airport and on board our aircraft, as the world resumes travelling in the post-Covid era.”

“We look forward to welcoming our customers back to RwandAir. As an airline, the health and safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority and we have been working hard to restore our customers’ confidence to fly.”

In addition to RwandAir staff and crew, the staff of other airlines operating at the Kigali International Airport also received their Covid-19 vaccinations at the same time.

Politics / NPHCDA: All States Except Kogi Have Taken Delivery Of COVID-19 Vaccine by References: 7:34pm On Mar 18, 2021
Every state in the country has received supplies of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine except Kogi.

Faisal Shuaib, executive director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), made the development known on Thursday.

Shuaib said Kogi state was yet to receive “due to the non-repair of their cold-chain store coupled with the state’s concerns around the contradictory information about the vaccines”.

Yahaya Bello, Kogi governor, had recently said COVID-19 is not an issue in his state, noting that he will not subject the people to vaccination.

The NPHCDA executive director spoke on the vaccine roll-out after the national economic council (NEC) meeting.

Speaking further, he said: “The vaccination application has been launched in most states’ treatment centres even against distractions and criticism of the FG’s efforts to ensure availability of vaccines in the nation.

“The roll-out of the vaccines across healthcare front-line workers and other health support staff was scheduled to commence by March 15, 2021, in some States, with the intention of wider coverage after the training of the states’ health workers across board.”

Shuaib also informed NEC that “the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had been co-opted to support the PTF on Vaccine Accountability to ensure the safekeeping of the vaccines.”

He also stressed the “need for tight security around the vaccines in the states to avoid being vandalised by hoodlums”.

The NPHCDA executive director also assured that Nigeria will receive the second tranche of the vaccines before the second dose intake is concluded.

Health / Austria Suspends Astrazeneca COVID-19 Vaccine Batch After Death by References: 6:25pm On Mar 07, 2021
Austrian authorities have suspended inoculations with a batch of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine as a precaution while investigating the death of one person and the illness of another after the shots, a health agency said on Sunday.

"The Federal Office for Safety in Health Care (BASG) has received two reports in a temporal connection with a vaccination from the same batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the district clinic of Zwettl" in Lower Austria province, it said.

One 49-year-old woman died as a result of severe coagulation disorders, while a 35-year-old woman developed a pulmonary embolism and is recovering, it said. A pulmonary embolism is an acute lung disease caused by a dislodged blood clot.

"Currently there is no evidence of a causal relationship with the vaccination," BASG said.

Austrian newspaper Niederoesterreichische Nachrichten as well as broadcaster ORF and the APA news agency reported that the women were both nurses who worked at the Zwettl clinic.

BASG said blood clotting was not among the known side effects of the vaccine. It was pursuing its investigation vigorously to completely rule out any possible link.

"As a precautionary measure, the remaining stocks of the affected vaccine batch are no longer being issued or vaccinated," it added.

An AstraZeneca spokesman said: "There have been no confirmed serious adverse events associated with the vaccine," adding that all batches are subject to strict and rigorous quality controls.

Trials and real-world experience so far suggests the vaccine is safe and effective and it had been approved for use in well over 50 countries, he said.

AstraZeneca also said it was in contact with Austrian authorities and would fully support the investigation.

European Union regulators at the end of January approved the product, saying it was effective and safe to use, while the World Health Organization (WHO) in mid-February listed the product for emergency use.

Adverse reactions seen in trials were short-lived for the most part and blood clotting issues were not reported.

A safety assessment by Germany’s vaccine regulator of more than 360,000 people who received the Astra vaccine in the country between the launch in early February and Feb. 26 concluded that adverse reactions were in line with the safety profile described in clinical trials.

Politics / BREAKING: Vice President Yemi Osinbajo Receives COVID-19 Vaccine by References: 12:26pm On Mar 06, 2021
Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Osinbajo was administered the AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID-19 vaccines by his personal physician, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

After the vaccination, both President Muhammadu Buhari and Osinbajo were presented with their E-vaccination cards.

Earlier, President Buhari had received his own vaccine.

Recall that Dr Faisal Shuaib, the Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency had said the president and his vice would be vaccinated on Saturday.

He disclosed this at a State House briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

According to Shuaib, the exercise would boost the confidence of Nigerians to receive the vaccine shipped into the country earlier this week.

Politics / FG Budgets N10.6bn For Transportation Of COVID-19 Vaccine Across Nigeria by References: 11:05am On Mar 06, 2021
The Federal Government has budgeted N10.6 billion for the transportation of COVID-19 vaccines to the 36 states of the federation and the federal capital territory.

According to a document seen by PUNCH, a total of N12.7 billion was budgeted as cost of transportation for the vaccine, procurement of PPE and AEFI kits.

In the document containing the budget details, Kano state has the highest budgetary allocation with N685.4million, while Lagos state, the epicenter of the pandemic, earmarked N558.6million for the transportation of the vaccine.

Bayelsa state has the lowest budgetary allocation for transportation with N121 million.

The budget was presented to the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) alongside representatives of the federal ministry of health, on Thursday, in a meeting.

On Friday, Nigeria commenced its COVID-19 vaccination with doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, which was first administered to health workers in Abuja.

The vaccination has been divided into phases. One of the phases includes the distribution of the vaccines to states that have met the requirements of storage and facilities.

As a result, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), which is the agency responsible for vaccines distribution strategy, budgeted N1.4billion for procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE) while N373m was set aside for adverse events following immunisation kits (AEFI kits).

However, the NGF appealed to the federal government to support the logistics and inoculation activities to states.

“Following extensive discussions on the vaccine administration, governors called on the Federal Government to take necessary steps to support logistics and inoculation activities in states and resolved to take the following actions to ensure a smooth vaccine roll-out exercise across the country,” Kayode Fayemi, chairman of NGF, noted in a communiqué.
