Politics › COVID-19: PTF declares Kogi high risk state, warns Nigerians not to visit by References(op):
The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has declared Kogi a high-risk state for refusing to acknowledge the existence of the disease.

The PTF also said that the Kogi government had failed to report testing, lacked isolation centers and therefore warned Nigerians to be weary of visiting the state.

It said having analysed the pandemic in the country, 22 high burdened Local Government Areas within 13 states in the country had been identified.

The National Incident Manager (NIM) of the PTF COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Mukhtar Muhammad, said this on Monday in Abuja, during the PTF briefing on COVID-19.

Muhammad said: “In addition to these, we have states where data is not coming forth. If we don’t test, your data will not be analysed and if your data is not analysed, we won’t know the level of the pandemic in your state.

“Notable among the states are Yobe, Jigawa, Zamfara and Kebbi and of course Kogi that has not been reporting at all.

“States that are not testing are probably at much more higher risk than the states that are currently known as high burdened states.

“A state that is not testing at all is an absolute high risk for Nigerians to visit because, there is no testing facility and even if you fall sick, there is no isolation center and they don’t even acknowledge that the disease exists. So for that reason, we put that state at the top of high risk states.”

According to Mohammed, the 22 high burdened local government areas within 13 states in the country, mostly in the cities of the state capitals contributed over 95 per cent of new cases recorded in the last six weeks.

He listed the states and local governments as Nkanu West (Enugu); Abuja Municipal (FCT); Gwagwalada FCT; Gombe (Gombe); Chikun (Kaduna); Kaduna North; Kaduna South; Nassarawa (Kano); Katsina (Katsina); Ilorin South (Kwara); Ilorin West (Kwara); Eti-Osa (Lagos); Ikeja (Lagos); Kosofe (Lagos); Lagos Mainland (Lagos); Keffi (Nasarawa); (Lafia) Nasarawa; Ibadan North (Oyo); Jos North (Plateau); Jos South (Plateau); Port-Harcourt (Rivers); and Wamako (Sokoto).

He said the PTF was working currently to provide support to various states through their task forces towards contextualising and implementing the regulation signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“As mentioned earlier, the regulation covers places of worship, public transport, banks, workplaces, sports and so on and so forth,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that notable features of the regulations include “Restrictions on gatherings, mandatory wearing of face masks in public and above all the powers of prosecution by law enforcement agencies.

“We expect governments, institutions, owners of private buildings and other regulators to enforce these regulations. For example, putting a notice of no mask no entry or no mask no service to enlighten users of their services.

“Pertinent strategies will be adopted and they will include mobile courts on strategic locations such as markets, motor parks and it is expected that every law enforcement agency will monitor complaints or their staff within which they supervise.

“We are providing advisory to the states to develop community engagement strategy and risk communication strategies to sensitise the public on compliance to these regulations and to promote behavioural changes.

“Last week, we started with the FCT, where we had a very fruitful meeting with the Minister and the stakeholders of the FCT. We are currently developing the implementation plan and the timeline for which the FCT Taskforce will commence operations all over the FCT,” he said.

Health › Panic As COVID-19 Breaks Out In Lagos Lab, Workers Infected by References(op): 5:29am On Jan 29, 2021
There is panic at the WellMed Healthcare Laboratory in the Ajah area of Lagos State, as several workers at the facility have reportedly tested positive for the COVID-19 pandemic.

PUNCH Metro gathered that at least five workers had tested positive for the virus.

The laboratory is one of government-accredited facilities for coronavirus test in Lagos.

Sources who spoke to our correspondent said the management of the lab refused to fumigate the facility, adding that it had continued to expose other staff and the public to the virus.

Our correspondent learnt that there was confusion at the laboratory on Tuesday when the husband of one of the infected workers stormed the lab, accusing the management of non-chalance.

A source said owners of the medical centre on Wednesday asked a worker that tested positive for the virus to come to work.

The source said, “The issue is that most of the staff tested positive and they refused to disinfect the place. I am aware that five people who tested positive this week were asked to stay at home.

“But I discovered that one of those who tested positive was around today (Wednesday). She tested positive yesterday (Tuesday), but was asked to come to work so she could put another nurse through.

“Other workers that want to test, they are telling them it’s not possible, and that if they want to do it, they will pay 50 per cent of the price. The management has not mentioned that they will shut the place even if it is for a week or a few days for fumigation. What they did today (Wednesday) was just to change the working hours.”

Another source told our correspondent that since the outbreak of the infection at the facility, the workers had been suspecting one another.

The source said, “Presently, many have tested positive and we’re still being mandated to come to work every day. In a matter like this, many people would have been in contact with those that tested positive and if we are not careful, we pray it does not go beyond what we don’t expect.

“This is making people to panic and it’s getting out of hand. Many people are sick; if the management can just fumigate this place for two days, we’ll be fine. We can’t just put our lives at risk for nothing. The whole place has not been fumigated since workers tested positive.

“The management knows what to do, they tested these staff. I just feel that maybe because of the money they generate from the COVID-19 test, they don’t want to shut down. Since workers tested positive, everybody is scared. We are suspecting one another because we don’t know who and who are now infected. I’m feeling sick now and I’m very sure that if I take the test, I might test positive and this can’t continue going on; we have families at home.”

The manager of the facility, Dr Belema Uduje, confirmed that some workers tested positive for the virus.

She, however, said the affected staff had been isolated.

She said, “The ones that were positive were told to isolate so they left work that same day when the result came out and the others that were negative are in the centre. The centre is sterilised every day whether or not we have a positive case or a negative case.

“We have done the needful; we have sterilised. It was done yesterday (Wednesday). We have a COVID patient who had to go on an emergency test and we have to close that place. We could not take in any other patient into that particular room.

“There are many people who have come and we don’t even know if it was the member of the public that infected our staff; we have seen a lot of COVID cases, most of them don’t have symptoms and we have mandated everybody coming into the facility to wear face masks.”

The state Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, said the government would investigate to see if the lab management was complicit.

Health › BREAKING: It’s Time To Prepare For The Next Pandemic, Says Bill Gates by References(op): 9:10am On Jan 27, 2021
Bill Gates, the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), says governments around the world, including Nigeria, need to start preparing for the next pandemic.

Responding to a question by TheCable, Gates said a country like Nigeria needs to invest more in primary healthcare to ensure it is well prepared for the next global pandemic.

The American billionaire said more people die in Nigeria from primary healthcare deficit every year than the total number of deaths in Africa from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I mean, the deaths from the deficits and primary health care are dramatically higher every year than the total deaths going on in Africa from this pandemic, and so I hope it causes everyone in society to look at these health issues,” Gates told TheCable.

“There should be close to 100% coverage of all the vaccines and you need to have those very functional primary health care systems because the number of lives you can save is absolutely huge.”

On Wednesday, Bill and Melinda Gates released their customary annual letter to talk about successes, challenges, and the state of the world in the new year.

For 2021, Gates said the COVID-19 pandemic might not be the world’s last pandemic, emphasizing that governments around the world need to start investing tens of billions of dollars in healthcare to stop the next pandemic.

“The unfortunate reality is that COVID‐19 might not be the last pandemic. We don’t know when the next one will strike, or whether it will be a flu, a coronavirus, or some new disease we’ve never seen before,” Gates said.

“But what we do know is that we can’t afford to be caught flat‐footed again. The threat of the next pandemic will always be hanging over our heads—unless the world takes steps to prevent it”.

Gates: Nigeria can build a vaccine factory for the next pandemic

Speaking on Nigeria’s plan for local vaccine production, Gates said making a new vaccine factory can take more than five years. He advised that Nigeria or any country in Africa could plan ahead for the next pandemic.

“There are a very high-volume of factories in the developing world, primarily in Indonesia and India. Making a new vaccine factory is a more than five-year effort.

“Definitely, to be ready for the next pandemic, I think that there will be factories using this mRNA approach, that are put in multiple places in Africa so you’ll have guaranteed quick supply.

He said there are vaccine factories that can help with the COVID-19 vaccines and the world “can’t get new ones overnight”.

“The plan for the next round is to globally have lots of mRNA capacity, and to advance that technology so that it’s more scalable, more thermal-stable and cheaper, over the next five years, that should be possible if we get the rich countries to make large investments. I’ll certainly be a huge advocate for that”.

Gates said the world now knows “the cost of a pandemic,” and in this case, that “has been tens of trillions of dollars, and a negative impact in terms of education and mental health that we have a hard time measuring”.

He said it will be better to invest billions of dollars in preparing for the pandemic than to lose lives and trillions of dollars.

GATES TOOK MODERNA VACCINE

The 65-year-old who said he took the COVID-19 jab some days ago also told journalists that he ended up getting the Moderna vaccine.

“I had no choice, they don’t ask what your preference is. There are only two vaccines approved in the United States right now, Pfizer and Moderna. They’re both very good vaccines and very safe,” he added.

Gates said the more people learn about vaccines, the more amazed they should be about how fantastic they are.

“I hope people will read the facts about vaccines, and how they’ve worked against other diseases, and see that now we have millions and millions of people who’ve taken this vaccine and we’re tracking that experience to make sure we were right about the overall safety.

The public health advocate said it is going to be a tragedy if a country continues to have an epidemic because of these false vaccine rumours.

Health › COVID-19: 19 Members Of One Family Test Positive In Kano by References(op): 9:05pm On Jan 21, 2021
Governor of Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje, has warned residents of the state, especially market community to strictly obey the COVID 19 protocols.

The Governor said this on Thursday at a COVID 19 stakeholders’ meeting with market community leaders in the state at the Government House.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Nasiru Gawuna, said 19 family members tested positive to COVID-19 after its breadwinner recently died of the virus.

“This COVID-19 pandemic is real and we have to seriously fight it.

“There was a house where the breadwinner died of COVID-19 recently and when the family members were tested, 19 of them were found to be positive,” Ganduje said.

He warned that the second wave is worse than the first and advised residents to adhere to protocols in order to prevent another lockdown as well as closure of markets in the state.

“We all know that it is the marketers that suffer most whenever there is a lockdown especially those who have to work to feed on a daily basis.

“Adhere to the necessary COVID-19 protocols to avoid the spread of the pandemic in the state and to avoid a situation that will necessitate the lockdown again,” the governor added.

Ganduje also promised to distribute 100,000 facemasks to the market community.

Health › Sanwo-Olu: Any Malaria-Like Symptoms Should Be Considered To Be COVID-19 by References(op): 5:25pm On Jan 19, 2021
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday said any malaria-like symptom should now be considered and treated as COVID-19 until proven otherwise.

The governor, who briefed newsmen at the State House, Ikeja on COVID-19 update in the state said such symptoms should be considered COVID-19 virus infections unless proven otherwise.

“In this second wave of the current pandemic, any malaria-like symptoms should be considered as COVID-19 virus infection unless and until otherwise proven. Any affected individual with COVID-like symptoms should proceed to any of our public health facilities and/or laboratories to get tested for free,” he said.

The governor also said it was important that people did not stigmatise or discriminate against anyone affected by the virus, as it is not a death sentence.

"Oxygen therapy and other related services will be provided to patients that required them. Five of these 10 centres have been commissioned while the remaining five will be ready for use within the next four weeks,” he said.
