Politics › New Naira Notes: We Have No Information On The Supreme Court Ruling - CBN by References1(op): 7:07pm On Mar 04, 2023 |
For the second time since the Supreme Court ruled that the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes will remain legal tender until December 31, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has refused to speak on the judgement.
On Saturday, an official of the CBN told The Nation that the communications department has not been informed of any new developments on the Supreme Court judgement.
Asked when the CBN will start releasing cash to banks, the official replied they “don’t have that information”.
The Supreme Court on Friday ruled that the old bank notes will remain as legal tenders while also declaring that the N20,000 withdrawal limit set by the apex bank was illegal.
Without any official pronouncement from the CBN, Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) cannot act outside the last instruction by the apex bank that N20,000 will be the withdrawal limit for individual account holders.
The latest withdrawal threshold, The Nation learnt, has put doubts in the minds of many Nigerians who prefer to save their money outside the banking system.
Asked if the Supreme Court judgement describing the N20,000 withdrawal limit as illegal will negatively impact the CBN’s cashless policy, another official of the CBN said: “The cashless policy has been in operation since 2012 and many Nigerians are already keying into the idea”. https://thenationonlineng.net/no-information-on-supreme-court-ruling-says-cbn/

Politics › Keyamo To Obi: You Played The Most Divisive Religious Politics & Lost D Election by References1(op): 7:03pm On Mar 02, 2023 |
Thursday, March 2nd, 2023
PRESS STATEMENT BY THE TINUBU/SHETTIMA PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN COUNCIL:
PETER OBI SHOULD NOT MISLEAD THE GULLIBLE, HE DID NOT WIN THE 2023 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
We make this brief statement in reaction to the Press briefing held earlier today by the defeated candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, wherein (in his now well-acknowledged penchant for spewing falsehood) he made the outlandish claim before the world that he won the 2023 Presidential Election, but he was robbed of the victory.
Having been officially declared winner of the 2023 Presidential Election by the Independent National Electoral Commission and having received his Certificate of Return (along with his Vice-President Elect), the President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu would have ignored this continuous false claims being peddled by Mr. Peter Obi and his supporters. But we recognise his motive of doing this is to simply delegitimise the mandate freely given to the President-Elect by majority of Nigerians.
Mr. Peter Obi is always quick to cite some isolated incidents of irregularities outside his strongholds that could not have SUBSTANTIALLY affected the outcome of the results in those areas, whereas he DELIBERATELY fails to comment on tons and tons of evidence circulating everywhere wherein his supporters in his strongholds engaged in thuggery, hooliganism, violence and outright falsification of figures against our Party and our supporters. He pretends to play the victim, whereas he is the greatest culprit in this game of brickbats.
Mr. Peter Obi knows HE COULD NOT HAVE won having played the most divisive religious politics in our history and the pattern of the votes clearly show that; Mr. Obi KNOWS HE COULD NOT HAVE WON having broken out as a fragment of the main opposition, the PDP and all he could hope for was to harvest a portion of the votes of PDP in a section of the country and the results do NOT tell a lie; Mr. Obi knows HE COULD NOT HAVE WON, when he presented himself as a tribal candidate and was only campaigning in settlements of his tribesmen in other States outside the South East instead of appealing to all and sundry; Mr. Obi knows he could not have won having joined the Labour Party few months ago and bought the ticket of the Party without valid Primaries and thereby polarised his party; Mr. Peter Obi KNOWS HE DID NOT WIN because he did not even fulfil the minimum requirement of our constitution which requires a spread of 25 percent in two-thirds of the States of the Federation. He did not come even close. With his divisive rhetorics, he could not have come close.
It is also ludicrous that Mr. Peter Obi is laying claim to victory along with his new-found partner, the PDP, that is also laying claim to victory. I tweeted this morning, thus: ‘’This is the first time in my entire life that I am seeing people who came 2nd and 3rd in an exam both claiming they took first and then agreeing to protest together to the examiner to record that both of them took first, yet they are not seeing the contradiction in their actions.’’ We stand by that comment.
The President-Elect, ASIWAJU Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended a hand of fellowship to his defeated opponents, including Mr. Peter Obi to join hands with him in nation-building.
Mr. Peter Obi should embrace that hand of fellowship and brotherhood by the President-elect as a committed patriot instead of engaging in this crass grandstanding.
Thank you.

Politics › No Standing Agreement Between Tinubu, Makinde - APC Presidential Campaign Counci by References1(op): 5:20pm On Mar 01, 2023 |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Committee (PCC) says it has no standing agreement with Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State in respect of the March 11 governorship election as being speculated.
A member of the committee, Nike Ajagbe, told newsmen on Wednesday in Ibadan that there was no agreement between Makinde and Sen. Bola Tinubu, the President-elect.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ajagbe was reacting to news emanating from the meeting between the governor and the aggrieved candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
Makinde was said to have told the aggrieved candidates, who lost last Saturday’s National Assembly election to APC, that he had agreed with the president-elect that he would defect to the APC after the election, which Tinubu supported.
Ajagbe said that the visit of the campaign team had nothing to do with the endorsement of the governor.
She said the president-elect was a party man who could not joke with the success of his party across the country, especially the South-West, which is regarded as his stronghold.
Ajagbe said that it was in the programme of the campaign committee to visit all the opposition governors whenever they were in their state for campaign.
She said that nobody should see such visit as an endorsement, but a privilege to host a widely accepted presidential candidate.
Ajagbe said that being the governor of the state, the president-elect only visited Makinde as he did to other opposition governors whenever he visited their states.
She cited the example of the River Governor and other state governors where the president-elect visited him before proceeding with his campaigns.
Ajagbe said that was part of the visit of the president-elect to Makinde and no agreement was reached between the campaign team and Makinde.
She said that after Tinubu left Makinde’s office he went straight to the ancient Mapo Hall to raise the hand of the party’s Governorship candidate, Sen. Teslim Folarin.
Ajagbe said people were surprised to read that the governor was claiming he had an agreement with the president-elect.
She said Makinde only urged the people of the state to vote for unifier of the country during the governorship debate in Ibadan.
Meanwhile, Folarin condemned Makinde for allegedly lavishing N500 million on the aggrieved PDP candidates and other stakeholders.
In a statement, the APC governorship candidate through his Media Aide, Yekeen Olaniyi, said Makinde had demonstrated that he has nothing to offer the good people of the state than spending lavishly to please his party men.
He urged the people to vote massively for APC in the March 11 governorship election and state assembly’s election, so as to maintain the same party both at the Federal and State levels. https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2023/03/01/governorship-no-standing-agreement-between-tinubu-makinde-apc-pcc/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

Health › Kwara Confirms First Case Of Monkeypox by References1(op): 7:58pm On Jun 23, 2022 |
The Kwara State Government on Thursday confirmed its first case of monkeypox in the North-Central state.
Dr Raji Razaq, the Commissioner for Health, disclosed this in Ilorin via a statement, saying the recorded case followed rigorous efforts of the surveillance and response team that it activated since the index case was reported in the country in March 2022.
“The first confirmed case in Kwara state involves a 29-year-old Nigerian driver who developed symptoms of fever, generalised rash, and weakness in the last two weeks and had been under our surveillance,” the statement partly read.
“There were contacts with the wife and four neighbours with similar symptoms where he lives at Gbugbu in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State. All of which have been resolved by the health team.
“The patient has been on admission in the last one week because of suspicion of monkeypox. He has also been under strict monitoring by the surveillance and clinical team.”
“Currently, the patient is improving and stable in the ward.
“The government’s team has similarly begun health facility and community case search/contact tracing.
“The team will also intensify continuous public and community sensitization on the disease and its symptoms for public education and control.
“There is also ongoing training and retraining of health workers to strengthen our response to the development.
“The Ministry of Health is also notifying the appropriate agencies, especially the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, of the development.

Sports › Champions League Final: Klopp, Liverpool Fans Responsible For Fracas - Darmanin by References1(op): 7:23pm On May 30, 2022 |
French Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, has accused Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp of asking the club’s fans to travel to France for the Champions League final against Real Madrid without buying tickets.
Darmanin said the Liverpool boss contributed to the chaos involving Liverpool supporters and French authorities during the game.
The Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool in Stade de France was delayed by 36 minutes after thousands of Liverpool supporters were prevented from gaining entrance into the stadium, despite arriving hours in advance.
French police used teargas and pepper spray on Reds fans, some of whom included children.
However, Darmanin, who had blamed ‘fraud at an industrial level’ for the situation, claimed that 70 per cent of tickets that were checked at the pre-filtering stage at the Stade de France were fake.
He said during a press conference on Monday that ‘30,000 to 40,000 Liverpool supporters found themselves at the Stade de France either with fake tickets or without a ticket’.
According to him, this was not the first time Liverpool fans were caught in this mess, recalling that in 2019, the final between Liverpool and Tottenham, the Reds posed the same problems in Madrid adding that it was the same scenario played out during another at Wembley a few years ago.
“There is also the Liverpool coach [Klopp] who called on the supporters to travel to France even without tickets,” he added.
“We ended up with tens of thousands of British supporters, some of whom had respected the rules perfectly. And a minor, but extremely lively, section which pushed the authorities.” https://dailypost.ng/2022/05/30/champions-league-final-how-klopp-told-liverpools-fans-to-travel-without-tickets-france/Lalasticlala Mukina2 Mynd44 |
Sports › Sunny Ojeagbase Is Dead! Complete Sports Founder Dies At 71 by References1(op): 7:33pm On Feb 28, 2022 |
Dr Sunny Emmanuel Ojeagbase, the founder and executive chairman of Complete Communications Limited, publishers of Complete Sports newspapers, SuccessDigest and other online publications, has passed away. He was 71 years.
The media entrepreneur, according to a statement signed by his son, Julius Ojeagbase, passed away on Saturday, 26 February 2022, in Atlanta, in the US state of Georgia after a brief illness.
Popularly known as Sunny Ojeagbase – or simply S.O. – before he added Emmanuel to his name, Ojeagbase was the pioneer sports editor of The Guardian newspapers at the media organisation’s inception in 1983.
It was from The Guardian that Ojeagbase went on to become the pioneer publisher of sports news in Nigeria when he established Sports Souvenir, a weekly newspaper in 1984.
Before then, the retired soldier of the Nigerian Army, had cut his teeth in sports journalism as a stringer at the Daily Times newspapers in the mid-1970s. He would later serve as the sports editor of Sunday Concord newspapers at the newspaper’s inception in 1980.
Between 1984 and 1994, Ojeagbase introduced several other pioneering sports titles including Complete Football magazine, Complete Football International (CFI) and International Soccer Review (ISR) into the Nigerian sports market. He also introduced Complete Sports, Nigeria’s foremost sports newspaper, in 1995.
A year before that, in 1994, Ojeagbase co-founded with his wife, Esther Ojeagbase, the Success Attitude Development Centre (SADC), with a vision and mission to teach young Nigerian entrepreneurs how to start, run and make a success of their businesses. SADC has gone on to produce and inspire thousands of successful entrepreneurs who are protégés of the Ojeagbases and many of whom are now employers of labour.
Ojeagbase, whose mantra, according to the statement, “was to do business and live life with the fear of God, integrity, compassion and peace of mind,” was ordained as a pastor in March 2003.
Ojeagbase holds a Diploma in Journalism from the University of Lagos, but was conferred with a honorary Doctorate degree by a different institution for his accomplishments as an entrepreneur. He also received tons of awards and recognitions for his contributions to sports journalism, publishing, business mentorship and entrepreneurship.
He is survived by his wife, his children – both biological and adopted – as well as grandchildren and other relatives.
Burial arrangements will be announced by the family.
Condolence registers have been opened at Complete Sports headquarters at Plot 9, Alhaji Adenekan Street, Okota, Lagos; and at SADC headquarters, No. 36, Esuola Street, Off Ago Palace Way, Okota, Lagos. https://guardian.ng/news/complete-sports-founder-sunny-ojeagbase-passes-away-at-71/?utm_medium=Social&echobox=twitter_post&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1646071024-1

Health › Prof Kola Oloke: Shun Consumption Of Animal Skin To Stave Off Cancer by References1(op): 11:25pm On Apr 20, 2021 |
Stop consuming cow skin and stave off cancer, Vice-Chancellor, Precious Cornerstone University, Ibadan, Prof. Kola Oloke, advised in Ibadan on Tuesday.
“Animal skin known as “ponmo’’ is harmful to the body; it has no nutritional value.
“Runaway from meat, especially red meat. If you want to eat chicken, eat the local one.
“Consumption of animal protein can lead to diseases. More importantly, it causes cancer and death,’’ the microbiologist said while addressing a seminar on “Lifestyle, Diseases and Management’’ at the university.
“Millions of cases of food poisoning are recorded every year which are traceable to the consumption of meat, especially those with mad cow disease and helminthic infestations,’’ he said.
Prof. Oloke asserted that cancer was not only preventable but curable and added that 60 per cent of chronic diseases could be prevented through healthy diets.
He added that other lifestyle measures to stave off cancer and other diseases included managing stress, avoiding toxins such as alcohol and tobacco, regular exercise and adequate sleep.
“One of the things that cancer cells thrive on is sugar; so if you can take off the consumption of sugar from any cancer patient, you would have helped the patient.
“Some foods and fruits such as banana, apple, pineapple and carbohydrates are high in sugar content.
“Cancer patients should also avoid animal-based milk and consume plant-based milk,’’ he said.
“Beans are the best meal for those suffering from cancer; beans prepared with olive oil and not red oil.
“Others are snails, Croaker fish, cabbage and leafy vegetables. These are good and nutritious for cancer patients,’’ he added.
The vice-chancellor also said that with proper nutrition, cancer cells could be killed, noting that consumption of walnuts and Soya products, but not Soya oil could kill cancer.
“Soya milk is good for breast cancer cure,’’ Oloke stressed.
The professor of Microbiology who has won many local and international awards, further stressed that with a good diet, man could live beyond 100 years.
“Eating vegetables is one of the surest ways of staying healthy. Sugar or sweet things are the greatest enemies of man,’’ he told the seminar.
Oloke also noted that while plant-based foods lowered diabetes and liver risks, consumption of vegetables helped a great deal in controlling sugar levels.
The don listed some other foods that could decrease the possibility of heart attack, stroke and cancer to include avocado pear, green tea, and natural orange juice.
He warned, however, that consumers should moderate their intake.
“In Europe during World War II, the death rate caused by heart disease fell as people were forced to eat less cholesterol-ridden foods.
“In other words, it is better for your heart if you eat a low-fat vegetarian diet while bombs drop around you than to enjoy your steak in peace,’’ he mused.
Prof. Oloke enjoined people to work out their lifestyles stressing that “rhythmic activities of the mind and body, including hormones, circulation, digestion, brain waves and state of consciousness support healthy living.
“Realise that your next day begins when you go to sleep. Maintain a healthy Body Max Index, good nutrition, regular exercise and spiritual practice,’’ he advised. https://thenationonlineng.net/shun-consumption-of-animal-skin-to-stave-off-cancer-don-advises/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

I have had my first dose of the Astra-Zeneca COVID-19 vaccine delivered yesterday in Abeokuta. My Deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele and two frontline health workers were also administered theirs.
Taking our doses is, first, service to self then to people, because we can only silence the virus if we think and act together. We should be aware that even our two doses don't preclude the use of facemasks and compliance with other safety guidelines.
I urge us all to make ourselves available to take our doses, especially those prioritised by the NPHCDA on basis of profession, age or other criteria.

Politics › Peter Obi: N400bn Too Much For COVID-19 Vaccines. I Can Procure For N150bn by References1(op): 1:32pm On Feb 02, 2021 |
Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra state, says Nigeria needs only about N150 billion to procure COVID-19 vaccines.
Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, said in December 2020 that the federal government needs about N400 billion for COVID-19 vaccines.
According to Ehanire, about the sum would be required to vaccinate 70 percent of Nigeria’s over 200 million population, at $8 per person.
Commenting on the issue when he featured on ARISE Television on Tuesday, Obi said there are issues of transparency regarding the procurement of vaccines.
The ex-governor said Nigeria would not have needed to spend so much in procuring vaccines if its National Vaccine Production Facility was operational.
“The issue of vaccine is one that I feel a sense of pain. Nigeria as a country in 1940 established what we called National Vaccine Production Facility domiciled in Yaba, and that was able to produce virtually all the vaccines we used in the days of smallpox, yellow fever, and that facility was shut down in 1991 to be refurbished and upgraded, there was nothing wrong with it,” Obi said.
“And till today that has been the case deliberately so that people can import vaccines and sell to the government.
“Now I hear that we are looking for N400bn, well I am at loss, our budget this year for health is N547bn. I don’t know if they are going to take this vaccine procurement from it, because if they do, we are left with N147bn.
“For the vaccine procurement also, we need to have transparency in the procurement. Today, vaccine in India costs between $2 25 cents to $3. That is an average of $2.75 and if you say you are going to use N400 billion that is about $1bn. If you divide $1bn by $2.75cents each, that is about 350 million doses which is far in excess of what we need.
“WHO said if you can inject 70 percent of your population, that’s it. 70 percent of Nigeria is about 140 million so we are actually looking for 140 million doses. Considering that some other people are going to give us some free, we actually don’t need more than 120 million. But even if we’re buying 140 million, we just need about three hundred and eighty-something million dollars which is about N150bn to buy it.
“If they have a N400bn budget to buy the vaccine, my suggestion, they don’t need to award contracts in this vaccine, let them just call Serum institute in India and plead with them. I am sure they will even give us discount. If they want I can go for the negotiation. It won’t cost more than $2 each.”
On Monday, Enahire said the federal government is expecting 15 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine in February. https://www.thecable.ng/peter-obi-n400bn-too-much-i-can-help-fg-procure-vaccines-for-n150bn/amp
