It's mostly preferably to study Mechanical Engineering as a First Degree because of it's job diversity. Degree like Metmat is very OK to study at postgraduate level as it tends to be an interesting career to specialize. I studied Mech Engineering as First Degree with interest to specialize in Material Eng at postgraduate level.

Can a Polytechnic holder of Mechanical Engineering with Six years experience in Engineering field also apply?

Yes of course. It's very possible for you to graduate with 2.1 or even First Class. As for Fuoye laspotech branch. Their class holds only on Saturdays and Sundays. Fridays are not inclusive.
