Agriculture / From Militancy To Entrepreneurship: The Story Of Retson Tedheke - Businessday by retsonbiz(m): 10:18am On Aug 12, 2018
From militancy to entrepreneurship: The story of Retson Tedheke
by OBINNA EMELIKE

At the heyday of the Niger Delta militancy, the name, Retson Tedheke rang a bell among militants and even the joint military security operatives that were fighting to take over the control of the creeks held firmly then by the ‘Creek Boys’.

Retson was dreaded for his stubborn stance and resistance of the military incursion in the creeks. His influence and stake in the oil-rich creeks grew with the ownership of crude oil refining point, where he refined the crude he stole from the many pipelines he burst with his boys.

While in the creeks, the university graduate still found time to invest in the stock market, though he lost millions of naira during the financial meltdown.

The loss was colossal and painful, it encouraged him to burst more pipelines, steal more crude and recover the money lost to the nosedived value of stocks. At a point, the Ugheli, Delta State-born militant, discovered that the way they were going about the crude oil ‘thing’ was not the best.

However, respite came when the late President Musa Yar A’dua’s administration offered the militants amnesty and he gladly accepted to leave the creeks.

Outside the creek, he sustained his fight but in a different direction. He channeled his militancy to activism in support of social justice and welfare of the masses.

“I lead a march to the National Assembly in 2016 tagged ‘Occupying Us’. Dr Bunmi Awoyemi, Idris and I were the arrowheads of the occupy movement, and in November this same year, we lead the second Occupy Us, blocked the National Assembly and stopped senators from accessing the main gate for a couple of days”, the ex-militant said.

But true change came when the activists realized that while occupying the National Assembly, senators and House of Representative members were going through the President and DSS gates. It was then the concept of a Nigerian farmers project came up to occupy the farms rather the National Assembly and streets.

Explaining his rationale for choosing agriculture as tool for positive activism, Retson said, “There is no growth in human history that does not come from agriculture. What we did as a country was reverse engineering. Oil was supposed to help us push our agricultural model, but when we discovered oil, we ignored every other aspect of our development, especially agriculture and industrialization”.

Today, Retson has led a group of social activists to develop Nigerian Farmers Group and Corporative Society (NFGCS), an innovative agricultural model that runs on over 1,000 hectares of land in Gaate, Nasarawa State, and offers Nigerians from across the world opportunity to invest in the farm as subscribers without being present, while the corporative utilises the fund realised from subscription to employ farmers who cultivate the hectares on their behalf with high yield crops, harvest, process, warehouse and market. It is an improved farm settlement model that is best described as ‘farmers without border’.

The all inclusive farm, which also offers ranching platform under the supervision of paid herdsmen, delivers good return on investment to the subscribers at the end of a farming circle, as well as, gives subscribers’ opportunity to invest in its two investment windows of February-May and August-November farming circles.

“We should not be talking about unemployment in this country when every hectare of land can employ two-three people conveniently and can pay them average salary. We have about 300 people that work on the farm every day without any government support. This corporative is paying them about N1,500 a day, that is about, $4-$5 a day and we give them meals of about N200 a day”, Restson, who is the national coordinator/secretary general, Nigeria Farmers Group & Cooperative Society, disclosed.

Also explaining further on the rationale for his investment in agriculture, Retson decried the fact that Nigeria spends over $4billion a year to import food. “I call it the insanity of our humanity because if you are spending that much money on importation, what you need to revolutionize agriculture is not more than $2 billion a year. If you spend $2 billion, you will produce food that we can consume and also export. So, the context and structure that became the Nigeria Farmers Group and Corporative Society is farming, revolution and activism”.

Explaining the subscription model, which thrives on the principles of modern business and investment, Tedheke said, “For instance, if we put the cost of farming one hectare of maize at N280,000, all you need to do to become a member of the corporative from anywhere you are in the world is just to pay N280,000 into your subscription account and we will farm for you.

“After that, you expect return on your N280,000 once every year. Instead of doing it in the farming season, we do it annually because you prepare the land, plant, harvest, warehouse and all that. So, we stretched the timing to have comfort. So, the bulk of the money used in paying workers, to support and manage the farm come from our subscribers”.

As well, subscribers are not limited to one crop or size of land, but as much as their investment portfolio and risk appetite are.

So far, the NFGCS model has been successful in less than two years of its establishment. “In the last farming season, we paid off everybody that invested and most of them have invested even more with us in the new farming season”.

Considering the location of the farm in the north central region which is volatile due to herdsmen and farmers clash, one may wonder if Retson is a magician. Of course, he is not. The magic wand for him is understanding and carrying the locals along. “First, we did not buy the land, we leased it from the owners. Secondly, we made the owners stakeholders by employing their fathers, wives and children to work and earn income. Thirdly, any Fulani community that is around, that owns cows, become part of our farmers and security team. With that arrangement, they know that the farm pays their bills, support their families, hence they will not allow their cattle to destroy the farms”.

Beyond the farm, Retson stepped further to cement the cordial relationship with continued participation in community activities. Aside borehole, he built a community primary learning centre, which serves as school in the morning and recreation spot in the evening. In recognition of his empowerment initiatives to the community, Ibrahim Adamu, the ruler of Gaate, turbaned him with a chieftaincy title of the Serikin Yakin Gaate (The warrior of the community) in January this year.

“I am the Serikin Yakin Gaate of the community. I am their warrior, their defender and head of the hunters. I was turbaned in January this year because the people felt for the first time in the history of the community an Urhobo man is coming here and helping their community. When you have a community like this with an average of N1.5 million being received as salaries every other week, how many communities have this kind of empowerment and why will the people want to steal from you their guest”.

Beyond the recognition with a chieftaincy title, some families are naming their male children after Retson. At present, there are over two boys who bear Retson in Gaate community.

The father of three sons, whose parents were veterans of the Nigerian Civil War, is fulfilled occupying the farms today. Perhaps, his root explains his activism.

As well, he does not subscribe to militancy as a way to get result.

“What we do as militants is to destroy to become relevant. But what nation building needs in not destruction to become relevant, it is the synergic relationship to become relevant and that is what the farm does. When I was in the creek, every time, you are worried that the army is going to show up with gunboat and open fire on you. But in the farm here, I am relaxed doing my farming in a supposedly herdsmen region with everybody around and offering genuine support. I have peace of mind, freedom of movement, association and to do whatever I desire, which the militancy did not offer me”, he said.

However, he thinks that with the inclusive farm model, NFGCS has been able to pool together so many puzzles that are troubling the Nigerian state together for good and recommends the model to government and more private sector participation.

“ As you have seen, the Fulani men are here, the Mada man is available, the Uhrobo man, Igbo man, Yoruba among others are here. We created a synergy because it is the interest of the farmers, the interest of our people, and the interest of our country that was first”, he concluded.

Travel / Sirika: We Are Not Paying $300m In Nigeria Air. Www.flynigeriaair.ng Registered. by retsonbiz(m): 8:17am On Jul 24, 2018
Hadi Sirika, minister of state for aviation, says the federal government is not paying $300 million for a five per cent stake in Nigeria Air.

In responses to questions raised about the national carrier which was launched on Wednesday, July 18, Sirika said the government is providing startup capital for the airline.

“The government is not funding the entire project. It’s just providing startup capital in the form of an upfront grant/viability gap funding. Once the strategic equity investor is in place, they will be expected to build on the initial investment made,” he said in the compilation by Everyday website.

“$8 million represents startup capital for offices etc required for takeoff. But $300 million is the entire airline cash flow funding requirements (aircraft, operations and working capital) for three years (2018, 2019 and 2020).

“This funding can be in the form of equity or debt. The financial model estimates cash flow requirements as follows 2018 ($55 million – $8 million is included here), 2019 ($100 million) and 2020 ($145 million).

“In order to ensure take-off of the airline in 2018, the government will provide $55 million upfront grant/viability gap funding to finance startup capital and pay commitment fees for aircraft to be leased for initial operations and deposit for new aircraft whose delivery will begin in 2021.”

The minister said the strategic investor will only become known after the public-private partnership procurement process is completed....

SHARES TO BE SOLD AFTER ONE YEAR OF OPERATIONS

Sirika said the company’s shares will be sold through an initial public offering after which the government will own five per cent equity.

“Government’s equity share held in trust for Nigerians will be devolved to Nigerians via an IPO.

“The government will retain only 5% equity, the list of shareholders then will be available to SEC and the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

“The rest of the 95% equity of Nigeria Air Limited will then be owned by the strategic equity investor and the general public.

“At that point, Nigeria Air Ltd becomes a public company subject to SEC, NSE and relevant CAMA rules for public companies.”

Speaking further, he said the airline will begin operations with dry leases and the domain, www.flynigeriaair.ng, will become active soon.

Someone has already registered nigeriaair.ng apparently in anticipation of a buy-out by the proposed airline.

Celebrities / This NLC/TUC SELF EH! - Charles Oputa; Charly Boy; Areafada by retsonbiz(m): 1:39pm On Feb 10, 2017
#NLCMumuBeCurse: On February 8, 2017 I tweeted about joining the NLC on their walk for good governance. I was really not too surprised at the kinds of responses I got from fellow frustrated Nigerians: My people just dey query me as per how somebody like me go come gum body with NLC "Fake" people like that.

For starters, let me make this clear; If the devil like make him hold rally, I go appear to use that platform to send my message to my fellow frustrated Nigerians. Until I posted a tweet about marching with NLC in Lagos, I didn't realize how most Nigerians had lost respect/trust for the Unions. In fact one of the feedbacks I received blaming the compromised NLC for the death of a family member really evoked some strange feelings in me.

The Late Dr. Oghenetega Umukoro battled diabetes for 20 years. His condition, however, became particularly difficult in 2014 because he was an employee of a state in this country owing workers 6 months Salary. He had been solely dependent on various degrees of loans to not just manage the sickness but also manage his family -A Beautiful family of three boys and a girl. He lost his wife Elizabeth in 2011 due to childbirth complications. His miserable life of Sickness; Struggling to pay Tuition fees for his children's education, poor feeding and debilitating cost of general upkeep for the family, led to further complications medically and he died a few months ago. His Corpse has been in the Mortuary for well over 4 months now, his children are all alone and have no idea what the future holds. The brief story of late Dr. Oghenetega Umukoro of Blessed Memory is the story of the Nigerian Public and Private Sector Worker and Workforce.

It's on record that President Buhari first gave a N350billion Salary Stimulus pack for 27 State Government. The first in the History of this Country and has continually giving further bailouts and Support to every state of the Federation totalling over four bailouts and budget support. Recently every State of the Federation got on the Average of between N10bbillion-14.5Billion from the Paris Club Debt Refunds and it is on record that President Muhammadu Buhari Impressed it on State Governors to do the Right thing because he is constitutionally handicap to enforce Financial Fiscal Discipline at the State Level. If the President can understand the Suffering of the people in the Ghetto and as a result of his desire to cushion the suffering of the workers provide Bailouts totally about N3 Trillion Since 2015 under two years what has Organized Labour down to support the President? I No See Anything oh! And sadly, most Governors squandered the Bailout and did not pay the workers that the funds were meant for while Labour Siddon dey Look like mumu.

NLC/TUC and organised Labour Leaders have been silent, complacent and I believe mago magoly benefitted from those bailout that was dedicated to the suffering ordinary civil servants. They did not and could not mobilize to fight the roguish governors and for the workers because the suffering of the labour force had become abstract to the leadership of Labour. Organized Labour has become an enemy of the Nigerian people.

From the National Health Insurance Scheme; To various Housing Scheme of Government; To Programmes for the reduction in Pregnancy and Childbirth related Deaths, The Leadership of Organized Labour in Nigeria has been ineffective and compromised in the Battles for Workers' Rights. They are Insensitive and have play no noticeable and viable role in the monitoring and investigation of the Frauds of Government and Governance on behalf of the Nigerian People in the National Assembly; The Judiciary; Failing MDAs; State and Local Governments. NLC and TUC were in this country and practically endorsed the last decade of Audacious mismanagement and Mindless Insane Looting of our Treasury; I Just Dey Vex!. They were silent, incoherent, indiscipline, selfish, greedy and destructive, to say the least. NLC and TUC have been at the forefront of the Corruption of the Nigerian Workforce and the destruction of the moral values of the Nigerian Workforce. The leadership of organized labour have come to symbolize what has been wrong with our collective being in this country. Oh! how I wish the Labour Leadership of old can be resurrected.

What I got from people's negative responses to this rally is that the NLC and TUC are alone in their battle against the President. And this is purportedly so because the NLC were silent when Nigerians were buying PMS at over N200/litre when it was officially N86.50/Litre; they are silent as the cost of living sky rockets every blessed day, they are silent when workers are not paid salaries for months in different states, and are not as engaging when the suffering people needs them the most. State governors owe workers up to 12months salary. I swear, Na God go punish all the bad people amongst us after the masses deal with them very soon.

The NLC and TUC Leadership have continually Ignored the Criminality and Looting by the National Assembly over the Past Decade. The Hypocrisy of Organized Labour Leadership is blatantly open for all Nigerians to see. They have been fighting the wrong battles under the guise of fighting for the people, forgetting that a battle for the people must be owned by the people. I may have marched with them, but their ways are not my ways. I dey hope say dem go change and begin answer their true calling or else, fellow frustrated Nigerians will occupy their headquarters until sanity is restored again.

The Struggle to overcome Political Insanity, Audacious impunity and Mindless looting in Nigeria took a Negative hit last night not just because Tuface Idibia called off the 6th of February, 2017 Protest; Or The Docile Zombie Populace Across Nigeria Celebrated Ibori's Return; but because most of the demons we are Fighting against attempted to hijack the Peoples Protest and Anger at the Establishment.

We must not Trivialize the Struggle or We will Struggle to make any impact in the Emancipation of the Nigerian Mind. President Muhammadu Buhari is not the Problem of the Nigerian State and this is not excusing his Failures. The Nigeria Political Elite are Vampires Feeding off the Blood of a Willing and Docile Populace. They Loot Because we Hail; The Celebration of Ibori in Delta State Yesterday and Across the Country Typifies the Insanity of our Stupidity and eternal Problem of the Nigerian Struggling Populace.

Now we retreat to regroup and re-plan and we will lock hands to synchronise our objectives. For me, it is #ALUTAETERNAL, because If we no plan well things no go work well. No be everybody get that kin heart to stand tall when jungle mature. The real tsunami it's coming, and no doubt I will be on the front line. I will take the First Bullet; let my body be the first to drop; Let my Blood be the first to wash our LANDS.

Will the Nigeria youth back a Full Blooded Peaceful Political Mass Revolution at the Federal, State and Local Government Level? I doubt. But, I no go give up on my children, The Coalition of the Frustrated, Angry and Hungry, as well as this country that I love. We must sustain the pressure and cannot turn back as the Revolution Continues. We must begin to resist political insensitivity and mindless looting of our common wealth.

I, AreaFada will fight so fear will no longer cripple my people. Our MUMU don reach last bus-stop. And before we go start to chop sand sand, we go enter street and purge our lands of political dictatorship, oppression, poverty and corruption. We must not walk/work alone or we will fail miserably. The Nigerian politician is our eternal enemy; The Nigerian people are the willing victim and it is time to channel our anger peacefully towards making governance work for us and not against us.

We must stop being the victims and become THE FEAR/THE MOB. If our yeye Leaders no fear us, change no go come.

We Dey Prepare; We Dey Come to a Local Government, State House, State Assembly or an Arm of Federal Government Near You be cause #OurMumuDonDo

Have we not suffered Enough?
Are we not Hungry Enough?
Has Corruption not crippled our Peoity not damaged our Morality enough?

If some can't see the sense in the march Tuface is organizing why must they insist on exposing their ignorance on our social highway. If Tubaba like make e get 7 kids with 3 babymamas, what has that got to do with the price of garri in the market?
Has TuFace not been actively involved in the demand for good governance before now? So why is it that he has ulterior motives now.

Anyhow, anywhere any day I go show, because Na our future we they fight for. Since last year me and some exceptional nigerian youths are also putting together The Mother of all rally's to be held in Abuja. We must see the end of this nonsense.

Sports / Barcelona Soccer Star Messi & Father Sentenced To 21 Months In Prison - PHOTOS by retsonbiz(m): 11:53am On Jul 06, 2016
MADRID, July 6 (Reuters) - Barcelona soccer star Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison after a court in Barcelona found him guilty of three counts of tax fraud, a statement from the court said on Wednesday.

The court also sentenced the Argentine soccer player's father, Jorge, to 21 months in prison for the same three crimes. The sentence can be appealed through the Spanish supreme court, the statement said.

However, under Spanish law a prison sentence under two years can be served under probation, meaning Messi and his father are unlikely to go to jail.

The court ordered Messi to pay a fine of around 2 million euros ($2.21 million) and his father to pay 1.5 million euros for the crimes. ($1 = 0.9034 euros) (Reporting by Madrid newsroom; Writing by Angus Berwick; Editing by Sonya Dowsett)

20 June 2016 | Ministry of Finance Press Release

STAFF PROTEST OVER N1.2 BILLION SPECIAL OVERTIME UNJUSTIFIED

A joint protest by some staff of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Budget Office of the Ministry of Budget and National Planning, to back a demand for the payment of an unofficial allowance totaling N1.2 billion has been brought to the attention of the Management of the Federal Ministry of Finance.
The Management wishes to state as follows:

i. The payment of what the protesting staff called a Special Overtime (SOT), was stopped by the last administration in 2014 on the ground that it was not listed in any extant government Circular, Financial Regulations or the Public Service Rules;
ii. The sum of N1.2 billion computed by the staff union for payment could not have been budgeted for in 2016 in the first place, not only because of the paucity of funds, but also the fact that the SOT allowance was not part of the remuneration in the Federal Public Service; and
iii. The Federal Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Budget Office of the Ministry of Budget and National Planning, do not individually or collectively, owe any of their personnel their salaries.

In view of the foregone, the Management of the Federal Ministry of Finance wishes to categorically state that the protests have no justifiable grounds.

The Future is going to be Harsh for Nigerians in the Short Term. It is going to be Harsher for the Docile People in the Niger Delta. It is time to tell your Miracle Workers to work harder...You will need them; PMB is probably and unintentionally conditioning Nigerians for the Hard Fall; It is Coming. The reset process is going to be intense and excruciatingly painful, there are no alternatives. I see Governors in Panicking mode already; The Thieving Governors in Delta and Bayelsa are laying the foundation for future wailing Governors from the Niger Delta. The Deceptive Voodoo Economies of GEJ/Iweala/PDP over the past decade is coming home to roost. The Development Lies of the Niger Delta Ministry; The NDDC; The 13% Derivation Fund and the Trillions Looted by our Political; Religious and Societal Elders is unravelling right before our eyes. At below 700,000 barrels per day and coming down; The US Dollar is heading Higher; Inflation is Heading Higher; Food Prices are Heading Higher; Cost of Living is Heading Higher; Poverty is heading Higher....Pray all you want; Fast all you want; Call on your Supposed God all you want; The God I serve is a God of Realities. You only Reap only what you sow. Every other God is a counterfeit.

Scavengers are preparing the ground for a full Military Option; With PMB's intent on sanitizing the Nigerian State, we are all simply seeing the Stupidity in our Humanity. Corruption and Criminality has enveloped deceptively our common-sense. The only possibility of PDP being in the Presidency in 2019 is for the Nigerian State to be in Total Anarchy and Absolute Economic Chaos. Looters will not Relent. They do not have the interest of the People; They are Greedy; Selfish; Demonic; Evil; Destructive and Wicked...From Boko Haram to Violent Fulani herdsmen; From IPOB/Biafra to Ijaw Avengers; From Cultism to Kidnapping; From Economic Saboteurs to Electricity Saboteurs. The Evil of the Majority of the Nigerian Elite who have been in leadership position for decades is fighting back with their all. Corruption is Fighting Bloody; Dirty and they are Throwing the Kitchen Sink at President Muhammadu Buhari. They are hoping he dies; they are hoping he fails and they are betting their all on the demons among us to destroy the future of us all.

I am the carrier of bad news today; be prepared; be ready; cry not for your country. We as a people failed; our parents failed us; we are failing our children and their future. If this must be overcome, let the goodness in all of our collective humanity rise up and fight for Integrity, Discipline, Fairness; Justice; Equality and Openness. There can be no Fiscal Federalism without Fiscal Sanity. The Political Leadership in the Niger Delta and Particularly the Ijaw Nations are the Enemies of the People. For decades they have looted any attempt at fixing the problem of the region. Our Failure as a Region is our Fault as a People. Leadership in the Region have failed for decades and the people have encouraged it. Let us all enjoy this hardship, It is just beginning.

Lagos State Accounts for more than 60% of the Total VAT Shared by all the States of the Federation.

Today, Lagos State is accountable for about 40% of what is Shared in the FAAC Monthly.

Politics / More Trouble for Rickey Tarfa; Accused of More Bribery- Premium Times by retsonbiz(m): 5:13pm On Mar 05, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has slammed a fresh 27-count charge of corruption and bribery on senior advocate of Nigeria, Rickey Tarfa, accusing him of bribing another judge. In the charge filed at the Lagos State High Court, the anti-graft commission accused the lawyer of bribing two federal judges to the tune of N8.83 million over a period of four years.
Court documents filed on Friday, seen by PREMIUM TIMES, alleged transfer of money in trances of mainly N1.5 million and N500,000 from Mr Tarfa’s bank account number 1002926967 with Zenith Bank, to Awa Ajia Nigerian Limited, a company allegedly owned by Justice Nganjiwa Ajiya of the Federal High Court.

An affidavit signed by G.O Adebola, an assistant detective commander, claimed that the lawyer started making the suspicious payments on June 27, 2012 with the sum of N1.5 million from his account directly to Mr. Ajiya. On the same day of the initial payment, Mr Tarfar, allegedly paid another N500,000.00 to Mr Ajiya.

Subsequently payment made to the judge were as follows:
Five hundred thousand naira paid on 6 August, 2013; N1.5 million paid on 29 January 2014; N835,000 paid on 3 October 2014; N500,000 paid on 22 December, 2014; N1.5 million paid on Awa Ajia Limited’s account number 0000971931 with Access Bank Limited paid on 27 October, 2015, N500,000 paid on 30th December 2015 to Awa Ajia Limited; and N500,000 paid to Awa Ajia 8th January, 2016, N200,000 to Justice Mohammed Yunusa on 30th November, 2015.

Other payments are: N500,000 paid on 15t December, 2015 to Awa Ajia Limited, and another N300,000 paid indirectly to Mr Yunusa, through Awa Ajia Limited. The anti-graft agency claimed alleged that the monies were meant to subvert the course of justice as they were intended to refrain the judges from acting in the exercise of their official duties and therefore contravenes section 64 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, No. 11. 2011. The charges also included three charges of refusal to declare his assets contrary to section 27 (3) (c) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, 2004 and making false statement to an officer of the EFCC, contrary to section 38(2)(a) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, 2004.

The EFCC said Mr. Tarfa lied and made a false statement to Usman Zakari, a Senior Detective Superintendent of the commission when he claimed to be 43 years old. This fresh 27-count charge comes on the heels of another on a two-count charge of obstruction of justice and attempting to pervert the course of justice the EFCC filed against the senior lawyer last month. In the suit, the commission claimed that details of the lawyer’s call log showed that he maintained constant communication with Mr. Yunusa, a judge of the Federal High Court.
The EFCC further claimed that Mr Tarfa bribed the judge with N225,000.00 to give judgement in a case in favour of his client.
