Romance / Have You Read 29 Single & Nigerian, By Naijasinglegirl? by reviewnaija: 5:02pm On Jul 11, 2017 |
If you haven't you should definitely check it out. It is so relatable, especially if you are Nigerian, 29, single AND FEMALE (society tends to be more accommodating of men who aren't married by age 29.) My biggest takeaway from the book? Tbh, I didn't understand how girls decide to become "runs girls" but after reading this book, I can definitely see how that happens (even though the main character tried her best to stay away from such). It's tough out here mehnnnn. But this book does a great job of infusing humor into a story which is not so humorous when you really think of the trials and tribulations the main character goes through, especially as it relates to Romance. I won't ruin the rest of the book for you. If you're interested, follow this link to get a FREE copy: https://www.reviewnaija.com/29-single-nigerian/ 1 Like

TV/Movies / Isoken The Movie (2017) – Movie Review by reviewnaija: 4:15am On Jun 17, 2017 |
In one word, Isoken The Movie was underwhelming. If I had to use other words, I’d say the movie was boring, very slow, somewhat predictable, but educative. I’m no movie critic so I won’t start going into details about the plot, scenes, etc. Rather, I’ll explain what I liked along with some of the issues I had with the movie. Caution: major spoilers ahead! Now is the time to stop reading if you’re yet to see the movie! What I liked: 1). The movie was quite educative and helpful in portraying the family and societal pressure most naija ladies go through when they are getting older and haven’t married. I particularly liked that the movie had some educative scenes. Two come to mind. The first was when a bunch of guys and their girlfriends were gathered and one of the guys ignorantly joked that they’d leave the girls to discuss asoebi. Isoke quickly replied saying “oh, because we are women all you think we’d talk about is asoebi?”; definitely my kind of girl! The second scene was when Isoken called off her wedding at the pre-wedding dinner. My takeaway from that is that it’s never too late! I so loved that her character did this…like the babe saw the signs and fled!! Don’t get me wrong oh, she should have spoken up earlier, but I’m glad she didn’t go through with the wedding. 2). I loved that Isoken’s dad was very supportive despite her mum’s resistance. His character should definitely get something this father’s day….lol. 3). Overall acting was decent; well done to the actors and actresses! And I found some of the scenes pretty funny. 4). I LOVED Isoken’s outfits!! 5). This one is just jara, but almost all my favs from Skinny Girl in Transit were part of the Isoken cast. Crime / How I Almost Got Scammed Buying A Movie Ticket From Filmhouse IMAX Lekki by reviewnaija: 4:05am On Jun 17, 2017 |
I decided to take my mum to watch Isoken The Movie today. Wanted to confirm timing so I called the Filmhouse Imax Lekki number listed on ReviewNaija. The number was switched off so I decided to call the number listed on google. As a side note, I always check the ReviewNaija business info first because no one can change it and we try our best to make sure it’s accurate. I called the number listed on google (0906-668-8966) but the guy who answered the phone sounded off. I asked for the movie times. He responded “1pm, 4pm, 6pm”. Then, he said people had been calling all day to book tickets. I joked that the Isoken Movie will be a hit, I can imagine. He didn’t get the joke. At this point I wasn’t suspicious. I confirmed timing with my mum and we agreed for 4pm. Called the guy back and asked how to make payment. He said I should send my name and he’d send me details. Couple minutes later he called back and sounded anxious. That he hasn’t gotten my text. I was like “mmm this staff is following-up too quickly”. I’d asked him the name on the account I’d be paying into and he said “Fidelity”. I noticed he didn’t give me the actual account name, but instead he provided the name of the bank. Once he sent me the account detail, I saw it was a personal account. He even added “Sales Rep” before his name, Obende Steven! And provided Fidelity account number 6551990385. I asked how much. Fam! This guy told me 6k for 2 movie tickets!! Then added “3D Tv” after the 6k price. I haven’t bought a movie ticket in ages but 6k sounded a bit on the high side....click to read more -> https://www.reviewnaija.com/filmhouse-imax-lekki-ticket-scam/ |

Travel / 10 Worst Things About Moving Back To Nigeria by reviewnaija: 11:38pm On Feb 22, 2017 |
Let me guess. You visited Naij this past Christmas and had a blast so you think you want to move back to Nigeria? Or, you saw all your friends snaps and felt major FOMO. Now you’re thinking “mmm, should I move back to Nigeria?” Naij definitely has its ups and downs. Here are my 10 worst things about moving back to Nigeria... My 10 Worst Things About Moving Back To Nigeria! 1. Dealing with Mediocrity I know we can't all be beyonce but we accept and even welcome mediocrity in Nigeria. If you’re someone who is used to striving for excellence or you’re all about continuous improvement, then you may find Naij to be super frustrating. 2. Nigerians Don’t Ask Questions I hate to generalize but I’m finding that Nigerians don’t like to ask questions. The other day someone on Instagram actually suggested that someone else should just “follow instructions” when given (see here for details). If you’re not sure of something, what's wrong with asking to confirm? 3. Driving Mehn, it’s like everyone on the road is a mad man or woman. The concept of “right of way” does not exist here oh! I always appreciate folks who drive as a profession in Nigeria because that ish is not easy! 4. Living in Bubbles If you live in certain areas (e.g. Lekki Phase 1 in Lagos), you’re living in a mighty bubble with your cafes, laundromats, cinemas and good internet to watch salt bae! Make the mistake to visit get posted to somewhere like Asaya in Kogi state and you’d start to question whether you’re still in the same country! 5. Security This one is a no brainer. Unfortunately, you're not fighting off any robbers like in the gif above. Just as recently as Dec 2016, a friend of mine got robbed. Yup, armed robbers went into his family house and they stole everything they could. Luckily, no one was hurt. Will these robbers be found? Very unlikely. 6. Minimal Late Night Activities I’m that person that’d sit at home all day, shower at 6pm and start heading to the mall by 7:00pm. Then, I’d grab groceries by 10pm, and hit the gym or chick-fil-a or dunkin by 11:30pm. Well, this lifestyle is not sustainable in Lagos. And then, with the security wahala, who really wants to be leaving their house to look for donuts and milkshakes at 11pm? Yeah, good luck with that! 7. POS Not Working Over the years I’ve gotten used to not carrying cash around. Why? Because if I have it, I spend it. In Naija, you must have cash! Just 2 days ago, I happened to be in the VI area and decided to checkout a highly recommended shawarma spot for an upcoming ReviewNaija post (stay tuned). Ordered the shawarma (cost N1400) and tried to pay with my debit card but no success. Went to a nearby ATM to grab cash and no success. Some good samaritan even offered to pay for me, but guess what? NO SUCCESS! 8. NYSC If you move back to Nigeria, you’re “supposed” to knock out NYSC before getting a job. I’ve read folks experiences at Delta Camp, Lagos Camp, Kwara Camp, Ogun Camp, etc., but it’s one thing to read someone’s experience vs. go through your own experience. There was a freaking 2 week old baby at camp the day I registered….like why is that even necessary?!? 9. Poor Drainage Just the other day, tintily rain poured and the gutters were overflowing! I felt so bad for my tiny car having to swim through the roads. I can only imagine what it’s like during the rainy season. If you’re planning to move back to Nigeria, brace yourself and save up for an SUV! 10. Lack of Constant Electricity I’m sure you were waiting like “ahn ahn, this one didn’t complain about the light”. Here, I must admit that I’m fortunate. The light situation in my house is not bad at all. Between the phcn light, inverter and generator, I’m actually pretty content with the electricity situation at home. However, my parents have started hinting that I should be contributing to the diesel fund to keep the generator running. Regardless, super grateful…thanks mum & dad! Final Thoughts Like I mentioned earlier, everyone will have different experiences moving back to Nigeria, although there may be some similarities here and there. Some people move back to Nigeria and hate it so much that they return to wherever they came from. Ultimately, Nigeria is not for the faint-hearted; you either move back and tell yourself you have no choice but to make it work or you move back to see how things go. You’re more like to stay if you stick with the former mindset. I’d love to hear from you guys. Use the comments section to share your worst things about making the move back to Nigeria! https://www.reviewnaija.com/move-back-to-nigeria-10-worst-things/ 2 Likes |

Business / Professionalism 101 – 4 Business Lessons From The Dave Sucre Debacle by reviewnaija: 3:28pm On Jan 18, 2017 |
Nigerians have suffered in the hands of service providers in this country. From tailors who charge up to ₦60K per dress and don’t deliver (JBLiving) to companies like Carlcare and Tecno that ignore their customer’s pleas, service providers in Nigeria have a long way to go. The recent Dave Sucre debacle has also highlighted this fact, and we thought it’d be a good idea to share some lessons learnt from Dave’s mishaps. In case you missed it, here’s a link to the story of how Makeup Artist Dave Sucre almost ruined a bride’s wedding day by pretending to be in the hospital while he was in Ghana doing someone else’s makeup! Now let’s dive into the valuable takeaways all business owners and employees should bear in mind. Lessons Learnt from Makeup Artist Dave Sucre Lesson #1: All Customers Matter! Mr. Sucre pretty much left his bridal client stranded for another customer who happens to be a Governor’s daughter as he probably felt the latter client was more “important”. Unfortunately for him, his bridal client wasn’t going to give up that easily. She made sure to share her awful ordeal with him and is actively pursuing the case. If Dave had known that his actions would have led to all of this, he’d have probably behaved differently. As a business providing services, you NEVER KNOW who you’re really dealing with. Set a professional service standard and ensure every client receives the set standard at minimum to avoid this kind of mess. #dontbelikedave Lesson #2: Don’t Lie. It Tarnishes Your Brand! It’s one thing if Dave were really in a hospital bed and genuinely ill. If that were truly the case, I don’t think anybody would have been so unreasonable as to blame the guy for falling ill. But that was farrrr from the truth. Dave and his team lied! In fact, Dave asked to be paid in full to ensure he’d show up to the white wedding knowing fully well that he was going to be in Ghana doing someone else’s makeup! That’s what makes this story so ridiculous. Dear Nigerian businesses, don’t tell these kinds of lies to your customers! Lies like this tarnish your brand in a major way. #dontbelikedave Lesson #3: Apologize and Make Amends! Would you believe that Dave Sucre actually tried to avoid taking responsibility for his actions? Dave Sucre - ReviewNaija Had Dave actually apologized and refunded the bride’s money, the case may not have gotten this far. Dear Nigerian businesses, once you screw up, own it! In fact, don’t wait to be caught. Apologize and rectify the issue as much as you can. Never ever blame the client in this kind of situation. #dontbelikedave Lesson #4: Nigerians, Your Opinion Matters! One of the biggest lessons we’ve learnt from all this is that YOUR OPINION MATTERS no matter who you are. You are a paying customer and if you’re not happy with the service you’ve received you should be heard out by the business. Dave actually blocked the bride when she first tried to get his attention. Unfortunately for him, she reported the case on our review platform and we were able to share her story with our community. Now thousands (or possibly even millions) of people have come to hear about Dave’s shady ways. Dear Nigerian businesses, enough is enough. People are starting to speak up against bad and mediocre service providers. This is the time to get your act right and treat customers like customers! #dontbelikedave That’s all folks. Hope this article helps a business out there. Be sure to share with your network. PS – Don’t be like Makeup Artist Dave Sucre! Events / Dave Sucre Makeup Artist Review From ReviewNaija by reviewnaija: 3:17pm On Jan 18, 2017 |
Please share this as it is important for people and any potential brides to know the vendors (e.g. Dave Sucre Makeup Artist) they could be dealing with and how they can try to sabotage your day. I booked Dave Sucre in June 2016 for my wedding in January 2017. I booked the full bridal package which includes traditional wedding makeup by Dave (this I was informed included all day touch ups by Dave) and white wedding makeup which includes a second look for my second outfit, makeup for my mum and all day touch ups. In August 2016, I was in Nigeria and had a makeup trial booked with Dave. I turned up at the scheduled time and found he was not there and someone else had to do a makeup look for me. If only I knew then how this man was. On the day of my traditional wedding (Thursday 5th January), I got a car to bring Dave and his staff over. When he arrived, he complained about being down with malaria and an upset stomach and this and that. I got someone to bring him food and just told him to take it easy as he was really playing the “sick” role. He rushed my makeup and I didn’t like how it came out at all and then he left immediately, before I even joined the ceremony. I even encouraged him to go home and rest and sent him home with my driver so that he would feel better by Saturday. As soon as I got outside, my makeup was pouring down my face. Literally pouring. The makeup had no staying power whatsoever and it was clearly not professional standard at all. My friends rushed to get the girl Dave had left behind and she said there was nothing she could do and they should “just dab it”. Eventually, another makeup artist I had booked to do my sisters’ makeup helped me out. My white wedding was the following Saturday. On Friday (the day after my traditional), Dave insisted I pay him the balance of the money to ensure he would show up the next day. I sent the money. By 7am the morning of my wedding, Dave had not arrived and I had not heard from him. I called his number and someone casually and unapologetically told me that Dave would not be coming as he had taken ill and had been rushed and admitted to a hospital. I was so shocked, I thought they were joking. They hadn’t even bothered to call me to cancel, just left me waiting the morning of my wedding. After my wedding, I was discussing with a friend about how I needed to get a refund from Dave because he had cancelled as he had been admitted to hospital. She asked me what I was talking about, saying that Dave had been in Ghana since Friday doing someone’s makeup for the Inaugural ball. He was on her Snapchat and she even posted a photo on Instagram tagging him as her makeup artist. You can imagine what it felt like hearing that. Baring in mind that this wicked man and his team had not bothered once to call me between the Saturday of my wedding and Monday 9th. I had to be the one calling them asking where my money was. AND STILL they were maintaining the lie that he was in hospital. Dave Sucre came to my traditional wedding laying the groundwork for his future lie about being ill. He did horrible makeup for me and left immediately. He made me pay him in full on Friday knowing he would not show up on Saturday. Then he didn’t even have the decency to call me to cancel on the morning of my wedding so I’d have some time to make other plans, he waited until I called to find out why he hadn’t arrived before informing me he won’t be coming. And I even called this man a couple of days before my wedding to confirm everything was okay and if there was anything he needed. These people are terrible. I’m sending this for any bride thinking of booking Dave Sucre. DON’T. He is wicked. What he did to me was wicked and I would not wish that on anyone. People deserve to know the kind of shop he’s running before they fall victim too. And apparently this man has done this same thing to another bride recently. I was very lucky I had booked someone to do my sisters’ makeup and once again, she saved me from what would have been a disaster and would have ruined my wedding day. @DaveSucre, I want a FULL refund not that ridiculous sum you sent me. And please no one should book these people ever again! They are terrible crooks who will probably take your money and deliver no service. It is clear he has no morals and prefers to chase big names rather than honour contracts that have been established with him. Below are pictures of the man who was ‘supposedly’ in a hospital bed on the day of my wedding (7th January 2017) Follow this link to read more and see the pictures: https://www.reviewnaija.com/reviews/dave-sucre-makeup-artist/ |
