Roland Taylor, New Zealand photographer snapped photos of the lightning storm on Wednesday at about 5.30pm (local time) from his apartment in Surry Hills in Sydney. He says he took a series of photos over half an hour, and each lightning strike is its own photo. "It's then just a simple step to merge or 'Stack' them together. The trick is exposing each shot right to make sure the blend works well," Mr Taylor said. He said he was "very fortunate to have such a good front row seat for the show". When lightning strikes in Nigeria, the local myth is that you shouldn't hold any reflective or illuminating object eg Mirror, glasses, flashlight etc.

"Home ownership has often been regarded as a utopian aspiration for a large majority of our people; a mark of great prosperity and the attainment of significant wealth. As a result, this status brought about by inequality has eluded our people decade after decade¦. We believe that equalizing opportunities will remain the expectation of every taxpayer from a government under any social democracy for generations to come. It is for this reason that our strong determination to provide better access to capital through affordable access to home ownership remains unshaken." Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN- July 2010. Introduction In line with its promise to energise investment in home ownership by increasing the supply of homes and enabling wide access to home ownership through mortgage finance, the Lagos State Government under the able leadership of Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN is pleased to introduce the Lagos Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme, (Lagos HOMS). Lagos HOMS is a unique solution to the substantial supply gap in housing stock in Lagos State, inspired by the Governor’s resolve to bridge the housing deficit in Lagos State and ensure that the Lagos State Government lives up to its social obligation to provide affordable shelter to its citizens. Simply put, it is a stimulus package for equity supported access to home ownership which will provide the framework for a sustained mortgage scheme in Lagos State. Background Steady and increasing urbanization over the years has resulted in the phenomenal rise in population. The enormous social responsibilities and demands associated with a growing population density that has now reached approximately 20,000 people per square metre and an estimated population growth of 8% per annum has meant that despite the best efforts of previous Administrations, the last time the Lagos State Government was able to tackle the housing problem head-on was during the Alhaji Lateef Jakande Administration from 1979 to 1983, when an estimated 21,000 units were constructed in 12 locations across the State. Subsequent Administrations have tried to bridge this housing gap without success. The major reason was found to be the lack of access to affordable mortgage finance. For the first time therefore, Government’s intervention in housing will focus on affordable mortgage finance which we believe is much more sustainable that previous housing intervention policies. What will it do? Lagos HOMS will generate employment and unlock the savings potential of Lagos State residents by giving them the opportunity to pursue other economic activities from the disposable income they save. In addition, appreciation in property values will increase availability of capital for home owners. Lagos HOMS provides an innovative and sustainable opportunity to enhance home ownership by Lagos State residents. It will accelerate growth by providing affordable mortgage finance and thereby promote equal access to home ownership in Lagos State. Quite simply, more and more people in Lagos State will own their own homes. A company staff member, who asked not to be identified, said the factory was evacuated before the raid. Doesn't this statement mean that the staff has been pre-informed of the coming of the BH guys, Hence their evacuation in time before the attack. How did they get this information, or was it just play acting on the part of the french to make us believe that BH attacked them too... |

The Boko Haram Islamist militant group raided a cement facility owned by the French group Lafarge as part of an attack on two towns in northeast Nigeria on Thursday, witnesses said. "The gunmen kept shouting 'Allahu Akbar' (God is great) and firing guns haphazardly. They went into the cement factory and took away some vehicles," said Samail Adnan, who lives in Ashaka, in Gombe state. A company staff member, who asked not to be identified, said the factory was evacuated before the raid. Lafarge is a leading producer of building and construction materials with 23 production sites and more than 11,000 employees in Africa. It was the latest militant attack in northeastern Nigeria, where Boko Haram maintains a stronghold. At least five people were killed on Monday when two female suicide bombers blew themselves up in an attack targeting a crowded market in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguru. Two teenage girls blew themselves up at the same crowded market a week earlier, claiming the lives of at least 44 people. (FRANCE 24 with AFP) |
