Languedoc Saints: St Sarah, St Martha, St Mary Magdalene, St Mary Salome, St Mary Jacob, Lazarus, Maximus and Sidonius et al
The Saints

According to legend, during the imagined persecution of early Christians, often dated to the year 42 AD, Lazarus, his sisters Mary Magdalene and Martha, Mary Salome (the mother of the Apostles John and James son of Zebedee), Mary Jacobe, Saint Maximin and Sidonius were sent out into the Mediterranean in a boat equipped without sail by their evil Roman persecutors. Many of the boat’s complement were supposed to have been present at the Crucifixion of Jesus.

After sailing eastwards they arrived on the southern shore of Gaul Mediterranean coast close to the mouth of the Petit Rhône at the place we now know as Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue

According to legend:

Mary Magdalene went to Sainte Baume, where she spent the rest of her life in a cave, clothed only by her hair.
Mary Salome remained in the area, in time, becoming an object of veneration by the local people.
Mary Jacobe was the sister or cousin of the Virgin Mary. This Mary also remained in the area where the boat had come ashore and became an object of veneration to the local people.
Martha was the sister of Mary Madalene. She went to Tarascon, where she converted a monster (the Tarasque) that used to rise out of the waters of the Rhone to devour people and livestock.
Lazarus went to Marseille and became its first bishop
Maximinus went to Aix.
Saint Sarah, or Sara, an Egyptian child servant. According to legend when the evil Romans set the boat adrift in the Holy Island, Sarah, left ashore, begged to be taken with them. By a miracle she was able to reach the boat by walking on the water.

Glastonbury Abbey claimed to have developed from the first church in Britain, founded by Joseph of Arimathea and twelve followers in AD 63. William of Malmesbury gave an account of the Old Church, or vetusta ecclesia, describing it as a wattle building, which was later covered in wooden planks and roofed with lead by Paulinus (the English missionary who was Archbishop of York in 625–33).

Antiquarian excavator, Bligh Bond, reconstructed the early church as round and set within a palisaded enclosure with twelve cells. The church was burnt down in 1184 and was completely destroyed. The Lady Chapel was built on what is thought to have been its location.
