Good evening People, Before now I was a bit confused as to understanding the various arms of the government and how they function, also I honestly wasnt sure what arm the senate and house of reps belonged to between the executive and legislation because I never really loved politics until recently. oh! well this was quite educating so I thought it wise to share. I mean who know I might not be the only one who didnt pay attention in class but later saw the light ![]() okay, I should go now. Bye bye. Nigeria is a federal republic modeled after the United States, with executive power exercised by the president . The government of Nigeria is also influenced by the Westminster System model in the composition and management of the upper and lower houses of a bicameral legislature. The president, however, is the head of state , the head of government , and the head of a multi-party system . Nigerian politics takes place within a framework of a federal , presidential , representative democratic republic, in which executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is held by the government and the two chambers of the legislature: the House of Representatives and the Senate . Together, the two chambers make up the law-making body in Nigeria, called the National Assembly, which serves as a check on the executive arm of government. The highest judiciary arm of government in Nigeria is the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Nigeria also practices Baron de Montesquieu 's theory of the separation of powers based on the United States system. Legal system The law of Nigeria is based on the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary , and British common law (due to the long history of British colonial influence). The common law in the legal system is similar to common- law systems used in England and Wales and other Commonwealth countries. The constitutional framework for the legal system is provided by the Constitution of Nigeria. English Law , which is derived from its colonial past with Britain; Common law , (case law development since colonial independence); Customary law , which is derived from indigenous traditional norms and practices; Sharia law, used in the northern part of the country. Like the United States, there is a judicial branch , with the Supreme Court regarded as the highest court of the land. Executive branch The executive branch is divided into Federal Ministries, each headed by a minister appointed by the president . The president must include at least one member from each of the 36 states in his cabinet. The President's appointments are confirmed by the Senate of Nigeria. In some cases, a federal minister is responsible for more than one ministry (for example, Environment and Housing may be combined), or a minister may be assisted by one or more ministers of State. [1] Each ministry also has a Permanent Secretary, who is a senior civil servant. [2] The ministries are responsible for various parastatals (government-owned corporations), such as universities, the National Broadcasting Commission, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. However, some parastatals are the responsibility of the Office of the Presidency, such as the Independent National Electoral Commission , the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Federal Civil Service Commission. [3] Legislative branch The National Assembly of Nigeria has two chambers : the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives is presided over by the Speaker of the House of Representatives . It has 360 members, who are elected for four-year terms in single-seat constituencies . The Senate , which has 109 members, is presided over by the President of the Senate . 108 members are elected for four-year terms in 36 three-seat constituencies , which correspond to the country's 36 states. One member is selected in the single-seat constituency of the federal capital. Judicial branch The judicial branch consists of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the Court of Appeals , the High Courts, and other trial courts such as the Magistrates ', Customary, Sharia and other specialised courts. [4] The National Judicial Council serves as an independent executive body, insulating the judiciary from the executive arm of government .[5] The Supreme Court is presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and thirteen associate justices, who are appointed by the President of Nigeria on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council. These justices are subject to confirmation by the Senate . https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_of_Nigeria |

ezeagu:My brother unity isnt absolute even within bloodline we dont live in an ideal world. You dont need unity to be 100% before things fall into place even 50% might just work the magic with the desired mindset. |
gab264:"Born to rule" is a mindset true A united mindat is the reason why the northerners dont only talk the talk but now walk the walk as a matter of factuality they've been walking the walk since the inception of Nigeria. it goes a long way to show that unity is sacrosanct. No man is an island I think they understand that. Until we the easterners learn to unite our minds and see each other as one, not because we want to win an election or actualize a self interest but because we understand that we need eachother and together we will attain the much desired significance in the society than as a faction. Until we get it right thats when we'll be fit to rule, but while we wallow in discord amongst ourselves let our status quo remain constant until we resolve to emancipate our mentality. |
madridguy:Thanks brother. 1 love |
i want to share this lesson with my audience.
This is not about Biafra and I do Not endorse
the Language but I find it interesting for all to
read.

Some People Made Themselves Minority Tribe While
Others Made Themselves Majority Tribe
Some people are of the opinion that Goodluck
Jonathan was "pushed aside" because he is from
the minority tribe.
But Muhammadu Buhari - a Fulani - is from a
minority tribe too. Ijaws, the tribe of Jonathan
are more populated than the Fulanis.
Yes, Fulanis are not up to 5 million in population
unlike the Ijaws, yet Buhari is the president.
Recall that he had ruled before.
Shagari and Yar Adua, two Fulanis had also
ruled before too.
Fulani - one of the minority tribes in Nigeria are
holding Nigeria on its throat.
How did they achieve this? They understood that,
to stand alone doesn't pay. So, they attached
themselves to Hausas and today, a lot of people
call them Hausa/Fulani, without knowing that
there is nothing like that.
Now, come down to South - Ijaw doesn't want to
mix with Ikwerri. Itsekiri doesn't want to mix with
Urhobo. Anioma doesn't want to mix with Isoko
etc.
They prefer to stand alone but ask them what
they have achieved in standing alone? NOTHING!
Now you know..before you say that GEJ (the once
zoo president) was pushed aside because he is
from the minority tribe, know also that Buhari
(current president of the zoo) is from the
minority tribe. But some people made themselves
majority tribe while some kept saying till this day
that they're minority tribe! https://m.facebook.com/edits/?cid=1715411855354531&expand=1&refid=17 |
Mologi:YAAAAAAA! |
aresa:Am Igbo by nature but Nigerian by colonial subjugation. The latter was Gods plan while the former Gods will This is how I rationalize both. Oh! and by the way your opinion is immensely appreciated. |
QuotaSystem:Succinctly stated. Thanks brother you've given me answers. |
FACTS ABOUT BIAFRA! (1) Biafran agitation has nothing to do with HYDROCARBON/CRUDE OIL deposits in Niger Delta. Imo, Abia, Anambra are currently oil producing states in Nigeria with huge natural gas reserves, not forgetting the enormous untapped coal deposits in Enugu! (2) Biafra is not land-locked. It has numerous access to the sea, including through the River Niger. (3) Biafra entire population is about 35 million people which is greater than the population many advanced countries in Western Europe, including Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, Austria....etc (4) Biafra does not or in any form signify war, violence, armed struggle or any sort of physical confrontation. BIAFRA IS NOT WAR! It simply means political, economic and socio-cultural freedom from a feudalist State ruled by terrorists and Jihadists. (5) Biafra is not a call for massive exodus to Igbo land. Put differently, every Igbo or Biafran must not live in Biafra land. Those who wish could still maintain their residency wherever they are as well as own properties anywhere in the world, including Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Abeokuta…etc. (6) Independent and sovereign Biafra will never translate to loss or forfeiture of landed properties of her citizens in Lagos, Abuja or anywhere in Nigeria. There are many domestic and international treaties, conventions and laws that protects Assets of non-citizens everywhere in the World, that will apply appropriately. (7) The NEW BIAFRA shall be a coalition of desirous and willing ethnic nationalities in defunct Eastern Nigeria and would never be a forceful annexation of any unwilling ethnic nationality within its current geo-political definition. Ijaws, Ogonis, Ibibio, Anangs, Efiks, Ogojas, and host of other ethnic NATIONALITIES shall possess the privilege to decide whether to tango politically with their Igbo brethren or go their own separate ways.. ( Biafra is a train of peace and liberty. A desirefor liberation from institutionalised stumbling blocks like quota system and federal character principles in Nigeria’s quasi-unitary society. It is a movement against internal colonialism, tribal gang-ups, economic marginalisation and political subjugation of Igbo and her minority neighbours. (9) It has nothing to do with hate, bigotry or ethnic chauvinism. Just a desire to live in a healthy society where your tribe, tongue, religion or creed does not define who you are or how far you would go in your career! ba7man:Ok. On the insult allegation I agree with you I've witnessed the use of curse words by him on radio several times. I'll go do my homework. Thanks for the insight |
Lanretoye:You are making sense bro. but I still feel like it might not be that simplicit. |
ba7man:This is actually incriminating, but for validity sake i would love to know the source so I can read up if you dont mind. Thank u. |
Ballmer:Well since you seem to be the making you of your brain, you should create an awareness of happenings am unaware about afterall I dont have a monopoly of knowledge. besides it was clearly stated this post was me seeking for enlightenment. So your review is still very much needed thank u. |
iamkeyz: I guess I should brace for impact then. |
First and foremost am Igbo 'Yes' but this writeup is neither to promote nor chastise the IPOB (Indigenous People Of Biafra) or the FG. But rather to further gain enlightenment from your objective reviews because the issue interests me. So recently Mr nnamdi kalu leader of the IPOB was arrested and detained by DSS operatives. A moved nigerians have long expected. We all know he's been making a lot of noise lately which the FG has viewed as rather provocative. Now if this arrest has no reasonable legal grounds for justification it could spark up controversies similar to the reactions that trailed the jamming of radio biafra's frequency, only that this time it might actually give the detainee and his group a genuine reason to push further with their secessionist plot and probably give them the global attention and assistance they've persistently seeked and you can trust the media would take advantage and blow it all out of proportion which will further publicize the struggle. Nigeria doesnt run a dictatorship system where such arrest could be justified. Democracy thrives on due process and ideally shouldn't be characterized by such unprecedented actions. But this is Nigeria and our leaders will always find a way to bend the laws and cut corners to suite their interest. However the global resultance of this political or rather unconstitutional maneuvers seems to have escaped the minds some people. The world has evolved such that the media has succeeded in making it impossible for the world to not interfere in another countries internal affairs. it only takes but a click for an incident to go viral and become an issue for global delibration. Information now seems boundless, news like smoke cant be hidden anymore, freedom of all sorts and protection of human rights are volatile topics which do not only promote activism but also has a high propensity to gain free pubicity rapidly especially when abused & violated. One thing is certain, surely this arrest will have consequences in future and the ability to justify it will determine the severity of the consequences. Now am a bit curious as to how this arrest could be justified from a legal perspective without amounting to a case of abuse of fundamental rights and also an enlightenment on the possible implications would be immensly appreciated. Thanks. God bless Nigeria God bless IPOB |
