“It was obvious that some forces wanted France to defeat us at all cost but one day Africa will get at par with the rest of the World in football.” Shame to Fifa. |
Diego Maradona has slammed France midfielder Blaise Matuidi’s challenge on Nigeria’s Ogenyi Onazi worse than the bite Luiz Suarez unleashed on Giorgio Chiellini. Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Matuidi was shown a yellow card for the late tackle during his side’s 2-0 over the Super Eagles, which left Onazi facing months on the sidelines with a fractured leg. France will now meet Germany in the quarter-finals but Maradona believes Matuidi shouldn’t be there, insisting the tackle deserved a harsher punishment than the four-month ban handed to Suarez for his bite on Chiellini. “Where’s the ball? It’s criminal,” said the 1986 World Cup-winning captain of Argentina. “Now I want to see the reaction of Fifa. The reaction of [Pele] and of [Franz] Beckenbauer. You must have a lot of nerve to not see that this is worse than Suarez.” Matuidi said he apologised for the challenge for after the game. "I'm sorry," he told the media after the game. "I've not gone in to hurt him; I'm disappointed because I'm not a dirty player. "I went into the [Nigeria] dressing room afterwards to apologise." The Super Eagles Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, has offered explanations on why Victor was confined to the bench in Nigeria's last two outings at the World Cup. The Big Boss claimed there was no iota of truth in reports suggesting he had some personal issues with Victor Moses. After not being listed as a starter for the Argentina game, Moses was reportedly angered and opted to sit in the stands instead of the bench with his colleagues. However, according to a press statement from Eagles Media officer, Ben Alaiya, the Big Boss claimed there was no iota of truth in the rumoured in-fighting. "It's purely medical. My last child is older than Moses, so why will I quarrel with my son? People must find out facts and not speculate especially when we have a capable media person in our midst," Keshi was quoted as saying. The coach went on to add that Moses had a muscle strain that was discovered by the team's medics after the first game against Iran and he was advised to rest it so that he could come out better in subsequent games. "We can understand that all players want to play at the big stage but it's up to us and the medical team to manage their career and balance it with due diligence regarding their health and that is why we have not played him. We hope he would be back in training later on Thursday," Keshi said. Moses watched the Super Eagles match against Argentina from the stands with technical officials and was not dressed for the encounter. However, he looks ready to join the fray in the game against France more so as Babatunde Michael is out injured. |
Kenneth Omeruo has today (Tuesday) joined Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the season. Omeruo, 20, can operate as a central-defender or right-back and spent the early part of this season training with the first team squad having returned from a loan spell at ADO Den Haag in the Netherlands. After moving to Den Haag in January 2012, shortly after signing for Chelsea, Omeruo established himself as a regular in the side and scored his first goal against FC Groningen towards the end of the 2011/12 season. The youngster remained at the club for the whole of the 2012/13 campaign in which he continued to flourish. His displays at club level led to a call-up for the senior Nigeria squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations where, after coming on as a substitute in their opening game, he played the full 90 minutes in the following five matches as the Super Eagles won the tournament. Omeruo spent the majority of last season playing at centre-back, and he was again involved for Nigeria during their Confederations Cup campaign in the summer, playing in all three games. He also helped Nigeria secure their place at the 2014 World Cup finals, recovering from a shoulder injury to play in the second leg of their qualification play-off win against Ethiopia. Omeruo made his first appearance in a Chelsea shirt for the Under-21s in a 3-3 draw against West Ham United in November. |
