Adiwana: Contextually,i may have exaggerated Tom's performance as Ben as you may think that I hold him as the greatest actor on TV or him putting the greatest performance on TV if you want to mention Kevin Spacey. Kevin is a lead character in HOC so no way am I saying that Tom put in a better performance than him in terms of general performance.Tom just made cameo performance while Kevin is House of Cards himself and that's why the last season of the film felt empty without him.Of course it's absurd if I think that way.
Talking about a combination of good acting/directing and you're calling Billions and Homeland??lol. Maybe you mistake good stroyline to this other elements of movie production. Maybe you also think that Blacklist is a movie that satisfies both niches just because the storylines are edgy and James Spader is acting his ass out on the movie while the supporting casts are just doing the same thing over and over again.
Your argument that Tom put in a similar performance in a similar role in another movie and try to use it to discredit his performance in Ozark doesn't make sense. I have seen Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) jump off literally in all his movies. Will I say that he's a bad actor cause he always jumps off some cliffs in his movies? No.
Julia Garner didn't just mimick the southern accent, she embodied the Hillbilly persona.Do you know why the Joker is probably the hardest character to play?? Sure anybody can paint himself as a clown and call himself the Joker but it goes beyond that. You have to embody that character in such a way that viewers cannot separate you from the character. Up till today,I can't separate Heath Ledger from the Joker that's to show you how great Heath was in Dark Knight. Ruth wasn't on Heath's level btw,but she put in something close to that in terms of her hillbilly performance.Trying to say she won because GoT had a terrible finale is just piss poor excuse.GoT wasn't the only movie that came out that year. Why didn't other actresses in other movies beat her to the award
Movies with great actings/directing goes beyond one character carrying the whole movie and som.Why do you think GoT is still an all-time great despite the ending??This is because the performance and general production spread across many actors on board.Supporting actors are putting in the performance of their lifetime.Check out Christopher Nolan and Queintein Tarantino works and see how cohesive their movie are.
Ozark is not very good because it has some out of the water acting, productions and what not.Its very good because it's cohesive in such a way that it brings all this elements under one roof which many movies lack.Every actor is putting in their bits as none is lacking.Very few movies match it in that cohesiveness Lol here you go again trying to change the narrative. But am glad you agreed you exaggerated about his performances. And I don't think you really understand what making a cameo in a movie means but its all good. Well yes I mentioned homeland and a host of other series severally, I only mention Billions once. If you were paying a close enough attention that should have given a good enough hint but I won't dwell on that. And I never mentioned Blacklist so don't put words in my mouth. Thank you You are making it sound as if the series I have mentioned had only one main actors and actresses carrying it like Blacklist or House of cards. You seem to have missed the point of the banter. You clearly said Tom was the best thing on TV right now and only Jesse from BB came close. So I went on to list characters from selected series that I feel eclipse his acting. Well at least you agreed they did b4 trying to change the narrative so its cool. And here you go again trying to put words in my mouth. Maybe you should critically read my posts well enough next time before replying. I clearly said Tom has always been a good actor. For someone who understands English, that clearly means that I consider him to be a good actor, thats why I wasn't surprised as to how good he was in Ozark. I even went on to let you know that he has played a similar role, not exactly the same bipolar stuff but something similar in Banshee. Then I added I personally felt his performance in Banshee was better than his performance in Ozark. Now where did I discredit his performance? Rolls eyes*. Maybe you see Banshee then you will fully appreciate what I am saying he was gem there. OMG am laughing. You were the one that mentioned GOT first. You mentioned it in such away that made you sound like Julia was better than all the stars in GOT. And that was what I was trying to defend. Not that she wasn't good. I clearly said as much in previous post. But I still stand by what I said she isn't the 1st and won't be the last. Now to this I clearly stated why I mentioned one iconic characters in each of these series. If you can't understand that well I can't help you. Banshee for one had incredibly acting and directing, from Antony Starr as Lucas Hood, Tom pelphrey has Kunt, the iconic Hoon lee as Job, Ivana as Carrie and obviously Ulrich as Proctor. This isn't a series carried by one person. Since that's your new topic of argument. I don't even think you understand what good writing means though. Hint it isn't about the acting. Westworld is yet another series that isn't only carried by Delores. Homeland isn't a series carried by one person. I have already mentioned two people names from it that did very well. Heres another Robert Friend's performance in homeland earned him an Emmy nomination. And its not my fault you don't appreciate the incredible masterpiece that is homeland lol. Should we even talk about handmaid's tale? These are cohesive masterpieces. Enough said There you go again with the hyperbole. No! Many series don't lack cohesiveness, its better to say many series you have watched. Maybe actually check out some good series so you won't be sounding this way. Please read what I wrote here well before you reply. I don't like it when people put words in my mouth. |

jikins: Hmmm I think you are being too hard on Ozark, probably because of the comments Adiwana made in his last post. Hyping Ozark to the point where other series, actors and actresses are less than.
Look Ozark is great, and I believe you know you are being overly critical its probably why said so in your last post. But I do agree with you that while Ozark is great it isn't everything.
I also like your series collection. I mean Lucas hood in Banshee was in a league of his own. Don't even get me started on June from handmaid's tale, a phenomenal actress. Frank underwood from House of Cards though a distasteful character but Kelvin Spacey was incredible. Westworld's Delores was perfection, she played that role so well I don't think I want to watch Westworld without her in it. Great story too if I might add.
Then there's Damien Lewis as Brody in Homeland, I mean Lewis is a great actor no doubt but when I heard you mentioned Homeland I was waiting for you to drop the BOMB thats Claire Danes protrayal of Carrie Mathison. But you never did, I was kinda disappointed really. I mean Carrie Mathison had bi polar disorder, same as Ben from Ozark. A role that has won her 3 Emmy Awards, 2 Golden Globes Awards and several others. I mean she's blows Tom Pelphrey's portrayal as Ben out of the ball park. Why didn't you mention her?
I do understand your grievances with this guy. I mean he literally just rubbished the works of so many good actors, actresses, directors and writers, just so he could hype Ozark. It was annoying to see on that I agree with you but Ozark season 3 was very good. Am glad you noticed where I questioned if I was being too critical. Maybe I am being too critical but to be honest, I love Ozark. I have recommended it to alot of people because its that good. Its amazing really but for some reason s3 didn't speak to me the way s1 and s2 did. I was underwhelmed, maybe because I had hyped it so much myself that I began expecting something magical but it just didn't go down well with me. I felt bored several times watching s3, something that never happened when I watched s1 and s2. But like I told the other guy, its OK if you don't agree. It isn't a must we see things the same way. But then he just had to over inflate Ozark. I mean I have been on the other side of this discussion several times. I think this is the 1st time I am on the opposing side. But even when I was hyping Ozark, I knew my limits or better yet its limits. It would be shortsighted for me to say Ozark was the best thing on TV. Did I think about it at the time sure I did but I also knew better. About Carrie Mathison lol. I just felt it would be unfair to mention her because when it comes to playing a bipolar character, Claire Dane is just at the top. Also she has played this character for 8 years, so she clearly knows her stuff. To compare her to Ben will be totally unfair but Tom was great in that role too no doubt. But Claire Dane is just a natural at being bipolar. I think you dismissed Brody a bit too quickly there though. His acting was a breath of fresh air. Am glad to see someone appreciate good storytelling and acting. Have you seen Gangs of London? |

Topmaike007: I use amazon prime maybe that's why all my series is centered on there original content. If you like scifi TV shows you can also try out the tick Yeah I noticed. The tick, well I didn't like it when I saw it especially knowing it was a comedy. I don't know I have this prejudice about sci fi comedy. Its the same reason I never liked The Orville either or Avenue 5. I prefer sci fi movies or series to take themselves seriously. Well not too seriously but seriously enough . A sci fi comedy just muddies the water too much for my taste. I personally prefer relatable comedies like friends, single parents and the likes. |
TV/Movies › Re: The Best TV Series Right Now.... by Rita5(f): 3:29pm On Jun 04, 2020 |
Adiwana: Don't know what you look out for in movies but season 3 of Ozark is easily the best season of the series. The Movie's ratings has continuously built-up with each season that season 3 has so far the highest ratings and it's not because of anything but that the movie has continuously progressed with each season.
No movie out there atm has better writing and directing more than Ozark.Take for example Ruth who's acting won her an Emmy over all the GoT stars. Her accent impression is so good that many people who watch the movie including me thought that was her real life accent.
Take Ben's acting too in the movie.I can't name another actor that did what he did in season 3 with what is currently on TV right now.Infact Ben's acting can only be bested by Jessie from Breaking Bad which the movie draws heavy influences from. Still your opinion really, Have you seen westworld or the handmaid's tale or homeland. Those are storyline masterpieces with writing that I can say are better than Ozark. Have you seen house of cards? An acting masterpiece. The guy that played Ben has always been a good actor, this isn't the 1st time he is playing a character like this with emotion problems. He did something very similar in Banshee. But to say Bens acting can only be bested than Jessie from BB doesn't sit well. They have been alot more phenomenal acting performances in series over the years. Take brodi from homeland, frank underwood from house of cards, lucas hood from banshee, June from handmaid's tale and many others. Performances that I would say eclipsed that of Ben. I even personally think his acting in banshee was way better than it was in ozark. So many series has better writing and directing than Ozark, Don't get too carried away by it. Explore more series please, Billions is another writing masterpiece and directing and I can't over emphasise homeland. Ruth acting is top notch, but again there have been other actresses who have mimic certain accent perfectly. She isn't the 1st and won't be the last. She won an emmy last year over got because got final season was a disappointment. Doesn't mean she would have done so during other epic seasons of Got. Seasons where they literally swept the floor with all the other series at the emmys. Don't get me wrong Ozark is good, but overhyping it isn't something I agree with. Especially not when I have seen better. I have mentioned a lot of series which you should probably check out. Maybe they will help you bring Ozark down from the high pedicle you've placed it. Then again I did say we should agree to disagree, seems you don't want to yet. |

Futuragetty: Dear human; Rape is bad. We know. We condemn it. We want swift justice for those who raped Uwa. But you see one thing? You cannot blackmail me for not talking enough. Not after some of you turn every issue into either an Igbo man or Nigerian man bashfest. It only says one thing. It reveals you are not as smart as your advocacy suggests. You blunt whatever empathy you get by silly stereotype and bashing. Look at the United States. There are whites who know the injustice blacks face. Some even risk life and limb to join their African American counterparts in demonstrations. The African Americans know the value of having beneficiaries of a system by their side. History is replete with such arrangement. Part of the reason apartheid ended was because the white dominated government sincerely thought it had enough. Part of the reason colonialism ended was because movements from within colonial masters thought it was unsustenable. Slave trade did not end because the Blackman suddenly had power. You cannot say “lend your voice”, then you drop updates upon updates giving blanket castigations on men. You cannot say “what have you done for the cause” when the person you are asking is reeling from being falsely stereotyped by you. That is a thorough lack of emotional intelligence, and a suggestion to many that your anger is about vengeance, not justice. I will not tolerate anybody coming to tell me to “lend my voice” when I don’t get the basic respect accorded a human. Take your anger somewhere else. Who stereotyped you biko? |

Adiwana: S2 disappointment?? How? The ratings say otherwise and the movie has steadily progressed since then and is the current best thing on tv right now I meant s3 sorry, but its my own personal opinion though. Felt it was too sluggish and boring at times. And on it being the best thing on tv well that's your opinion but I don't agree with it. Feel gangs of London is far more engaging, gritty and keeps you at the edge of your seat through out the season. Something Ozark s3 failed to do for me. I don't know maybe I am being overly critical because after the first 2 seasons, I expected more from s3 but it just fell short really. So I can't in good conscience say its the best thing on TV right now. But its fine if you think that, we can just agree to disagree. |

zicoraads: All these seasonal movies being mentioned are average at best. Game of Thrones ended my seasonal movies watching. The one I enjoyed watching recently was the Blacklist.
Money Heist is trash. I wonder why people enjoy it. Saying money Heist is trash is just being short sighted really. Its clearly over hyped and good but its not great but its definitely not trash. GOT was the best series I had seen until the disaster that was the final season. Blacklist is ok but not great either. And some very above average series have been mentioned like homeland, altered carbon, the handmaid's tale, banshee, breaking bad, peaky blinders, gangs of London and many others. |

Eggshells: Hello my fellow nairalanders... Ive been an ardent follower of this forum for quite some time now and only joined yesterday to share something that has been bothering me for some time now.
My fiance and I were in the same state Enugu, nmaku precisely before I relocated to Lagos to work with my uncle. This was in September last year. Initially we were communicating like everyday but as time went on, work became very tedious that I reduced to like once in three days.to which he saw reasons and understood.
Problem now is, he called early Feb to tell me to either quit my uncles job or forget about our relationship... I was shocked and didn't know what to say. so I told him to give me some time to give him feedback. But now, I don't know what to tell him cos I need the job and we have come a long way and he called me last week saying this first week of March is the dead line... Please what should I do? I'm in a fix now.
Thanks in advance for your responses. Insults are not welcomed please. Hmmm... I can't really advice you as I am not in your shoes. I don't have the same level of emotional attachment you share for the guy. So my only advice as a result will be to stick with your job. But since you're the one with the shoes, you have to decide which is more important to you. You job or the guy? Nothing wrong with which ever decision you make just make sure you seriously analyse things. Even if you go back to him don't make the mistake of depending on him. Find another job, find your feet again. Try to be independent as much as possible. I don't know why he wants you back so eagerly. Maybe he is scared of losing you or maybe he wants you closer for more intimate encounters. But be smart am sure you have plans and goals you want to achieve don't abandon them because a man asked you to. Many ladies are regretting that decision till today. But don't be too focus on your goals that you miss out on a really great guy. Can't a compromise be reached? Say you go see him and vice versa once a month or once every two weeks? Can both of you try to get jobs closer to each other if possible in the same state? Honestly relationship isn't an authoritarian something. It takes two, so if he can't be flexible now on this. Can he be flexible about other things? Best of luck really. I believe what ever decision you will make will be the right one. |

EmperorAce: Hello everyone, please I need your opinion on an issue bothering me. I have a female friend who toke me as her bestie, we are good friends and she is in my department in school. She knows my girlfriend very well and she respects her a lot. The issue is that she has refused to date anyone since she resumed school, so I asked her to have a boyfriend which she did and then on Valentine’s Day which happens to be her birthday, the guy didn’t call or text to wish her happy birthday or valentine. She got heartbroken, she came to my place and cried a lot, I pet her and try to encourage her. She felt better when I faced a stand fan on her. She removed her pant and raised her gown facing the fan while laughing and moaning that it feels good, and she requested for alcoholic gin which I gave her after diluting it with sprite soft drink. I wanted her to drink a little and sleep so she’ll stop crying. She drank a little glass and then she started feeling better but a bit happy. She started dragging me close which I felt was normal because she does that even while sober, but then she pinned me down on bed and started saying things like why I didn’t call her on her birthday, she called me her boyfriend’s name , I thought she was drunk and I try to put her to sleep. She was not even weak or drowsy. Her words were accurate and not like who is drunk. She suddenly grabbed my d*ck and begged me to have sex with her. I declined, but she begged me almost in tears, then she said that she ought not to be begging me, that we ought to be doing it. We end up having a breathtaking sex which lasted for an hour. She washed up and I bathed. She went to bed and woke up an hour later, we talked while she went home. We chatted later and I asked her to take Postinor but she said “why” ? She has not had sex for 2 months and she doesn’t need to cus she never had sex! I was shocked, I told her we did but she laughed it off that I am joking. A week later, she came to me that she was pregnant and doesn’t know who. She said it’s not her boyfriend cus they had sex for the first time a day before. She is crying always in confusion that she can’t think of anyone and she doesn’t know what to do.
Is it really possible she doesn’t know ? I’m really shocked. She's manipulating you jor. Make sure to get a DNA test. Cheers! |

Education › Babcook Vs OAU Response To Students' Sex Tape by Rita5(op): 8:10am On Nov 23, 2019 |
We have all heard about the babcook incident and the subsequent reaction by the University. Which was to expell the girl. This action wasn't made because she broke any of the school or societal law. But a supposed moral one.
My question is what is the place of the church if we dispose of people when they are on the ground? I can dare say this action by the University betrays the very Christian values the feel they are protecting. What would Jesus do?
Christianity is meant to be inclusive irrespective of what you have done. Jesus judgement on the woman taken in for adultery comes to mind. He said something very powerful that I believe reigns true today,
"Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."
No one is perfect we make mistakes, but the duty of the church isn't push that person aside, but to correct them with compassion and love.
Suprisingly, this trait was exhibited by a non Christian school, Obafemi Awolowo University, who few months ago was rocked by the release of a girls sex tape. The school didn't expell her instead immediately they heard about it, they sent people to her room to be with her and comfort her. This is a school with compassion.
I am beginning to learn that the best of humanity isn't in the church but in ordinary people doing the right thing time and time again.
