Inauguration

Ibadan, March 12, 2016 (NAN)

The Road Accident Information and Rescue Organisation, a humanitarian service outfit, on Saturday, inaugurated Emergency Rescue Information Control Centre at Ibadan Toll-Gate on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The organisation’s National Coordinator, Mr Okanlawon Bamgboye, said the centre would receive emergency calls in case of accidents on the road for immediate emergency response.

``The centre is a control room where operators receive emergency calls from members of the public in need of assistance and immediately dispatch the information received to relevant rescue agencies.

``The centre will provide relevant information to hospitals that will treat rescued victims and have access to information about relatives.

``Our operators are trained to provide first aid advice over the phone, so that treatment of the patients can commence before hospital ambulance arrives.

``For any emergency, call 07034640202, 08125740204, give the operator essential information, including the exact location of the accident and details of what happened,” he said.
Bamgboye emphasised that the focus would be on quick intervention to victims of traffic accidents.

He said the centre would work with emergency service providers such as ambulance operators, police, and personnel of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), among others.

The coordinator said that the organisation had selected some private hospitals to cater for any emergency.

He stressed that saving lives was a collective responsibility and urged the people to support the initiative to save victims of road crashes.

A resident, Mr Charles Balogun testified that the rescue organisations had recently helped some accident victims and commended the initiative.

``They were called over an accident that occurred at Ojoo/Iwo road, Ibadan.
“When we called them, they responded promptly, called on the road safety to inform them, after some time, they arrived and the victims were taken to the hospital,” he said. (NAN)

Oyo CP Urges Nigerians To Engage In Community Policing

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Indabawa, on Saturday in Ibadan urged various communities in the country to engage in community policing.

Indabawa, represented by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs Bisi Clet-Ilobanafor, said this during the 5th Anniversary Lecture on Road Accident Information and Rescue Organisation.

The theme of the lecture is: “Developing an Effective National Security”.

Indabawa said that community policing was the collaboration of the community members with the police to ensure that the society was free of crime.

He said that the police could not achieve any meaningful success in crime prevention without the support of the community.

“Through the community policing, Oyo State has migrated from an errand of thuggery, violence and thereby recording a low crime rate”, Indabawa said.

In his remark, Mr Okanlawon Bamgboye, National Executive Coordinator of the Community Policing, said that the objective of the lecture was to look at the present security challenges in Nigeria and the way forward.

“The Nigeria internal security which used to be more secured with lowest rate of insecurity seems to assume alarming proportions due to poor state of intelligence gathering and management.

“We must develop robust internal intelligence gathering and management.

“There should be information sharing among all the security agencies in the country”, Bamgboye said.

He advised the Federal Government to empower the police to make use of bio-data information collected by the National Identification Management Commission (NIMC) as sources to combat crime.

The State Commandant, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Omolade Faboye, said Nigerians should rise to fight the menace of drug abuse.

Faboye, who was represented by Mrs Ijeoma Chikezie, said that taking drugs like narcotic, heroine and other dangerous drugs destabilised the body system.

He said that consumption of alcohol and other dangerous drugs accounted for the 90 per cent of road accidents in Nigeria.

“Every Nigeria has responsibility and a role to play on both drug abuse eradication and security challenge.

“Security issues should not be seen as only the states and the Federal Government’s responsibility, it should be the collective responsibility of everybody”, Faboye said. (NAN)
