Programming has no age limit. Many real life programmers are old and mature men. Forget about those who are just making online noise on Nairaland calling themselves programmers and discouraging you. Many of them are just learner's and dreamers, they have never developed any tangible application before.

Many serious programmers don't have time for online chatting, they are either indoor coding or chasing programming contracts. You only need to be focus and be self-decipline. Pitch your tent with one or two particular languages based on areas of good modern programming languages you like to major and stop being driven away by big names in programming languages.

You need to first settle with areas you want to focus like building desktop applications (that can run on Windows, Mac, Linux and Raspberry Pi), you can also major in Mobile App (that can run on Android, iOS or window mobile), you may also decide to pitch your tent with website development (using languages like html, CSS, JavaScript, Php and mysql ..using coding approach or using third-party applications like Dreamweaver, frontpage, Joomla or WordPress etc).

If you are good with electronic or you studied computer engineering or electronic engineering or have background experiences in electronic, you may also want to focus on embedded systems programming ( where you program ICs, microcontrollers, Arduino, and iot and automation related programming).

Programming field is wide and learning curve has no end, but first settle about areas you like so you can come to second stage of choosing programming languages that you can flow with to acheive your dream. There are millions of existing programming languages, but be guided don't be lost here.

Any reasonable modern programming language can acheive what you want, pick one or two and stay focus till you grow in programming to explore other languages for fun. Another question you must answer by yourself is why you want to learn programming? Is it for fun or you want to choose it as career?

If it is for career, I will advise you to combine mobile application development with your web development interest. With mobile, even if there is no contract job, you can develop simple application that you can put on Google play or iOS side or sell in your local market if you package it well and earn money while you are waiting for contract job on web development.

Learning programming initially is hard and demands concentration and high sense of discipline, but the end is always joyous as you can quickly become financially independent. So, many serious programmers today all over the world are old men who are still in 60,70 and 80 years old.

You can do your undergrand study, forget about online noise of those people programming with mouth. While younger ones are comming up, old men who created opportunity or invented something during Fortran, Cobol and VB1 to 6 etc are also counting on their experiences to blend with other new languages to remain relevant in the programming market to maintain their inventions

I don't have much time to explain in detail by writing, but believe me, you are still very young in programming world if you wish to learn and your experience will also count in identifying and solving real-life problems when you master any programming of your choice. If you remain focus, in two years, you should be one of the problem solvers the world is waiting for.
Regards
Thanks dear, I already have a mentor in you. I will not fail to archive this wonderful encouraging post of yours. I started to wonder if programming has become a child's play that it is only for children to learn. You are the kind of people we're looking unto. God ll bless you.

Oga you should be ashamed of yourself by this time. Coming to a public forum to post this kind of thing is very disgraceful in the first place.

What were you doing all those years?
A man at 40+ starring at a laptop screen for several hours is the most ridiculous and demeaning activity at your age when your mates have already retired to focus on family and mentorship.

Goodluck to you sha..
Thanks, you have made your points severally and I appreciate your own side of contribution.

Great analysis. If he doesn’t have the passion for programming but only wants to delve into it because of the hype and buzz around it, he’ll quit sooner than later.
If he’s a family man, he should stick to his job or whatever brings him income and learn programming as an extra skill, not abandoning his current job and switching fully like he’s trying to do. Else he’ll be frustrated quickly due to lack of income while learning.
I am also learning Javascript alongside my normal job, when I am well grounded, I’ll look for a programmer job.
My thoughts actually, am serious but not desperate. I have even gone on knowing the principles. Thanks dear

Everyone cannot live according to a particular script, why can't a man at 40 learn new things and switch careers, is 40 that old? and who says only young people should stare at the laptop for several hours?
Even old people ( at 50) stare at their television for several hours, so why not a laptop?
Thanks for the apt response. I wonder what the baby thought 40 is, for his mind I have not achieved anything before now. I may even look younger than him/her.

The truth is that we all are not the same, the guy has moved on. Almost done with frontend and doesn't have any issue on your fears.

Great then, you should be well grounded in Discrete mathematics, get some books on discrete mathematics (Discrete mathematics Elementary and Beyond is a book that simplified my learning process)
Thanks I like your blunt discrete answer.

^^^I completely agree with kobojunkie.
I have seen some great statisfical analytical softwares that some programmers made. Graph API, banking applications, applications like facebook website itself, google search and all that.
Can you immagine for a second if those programmers are not good in mathematics? or those that made this web app - http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/lcddata.html?ticker=BAC&fq=D&ezd=1W&index=2
Something like microsoft excel for instance is another application i can refer to - at least we all know that.
So it does mean that all of you programmers answering this question in affirmative are all maths gurus?

I get your point but
You should understand that not every programmer wants to build the next world class Operating system or develop a new Programming language, game etc

@OP yes you can, but you need dedication and consistency.
The reason you want to learn programming should be your motivating factor, it would guild you on the language to start with
Am very ambitious about it, I don't mind taking it to any level. I think it's worth doing well if it's worth doing at all. Thanks though!

Hello Friend,

I advice you as a Programmer doing Website Design & Software development and not a Website designer.

I am also assuming you said "Programming" as a career switch and not website design.

If family or girlfriend is not in the way, go to a good computer college and enroll for C++ & Java programming or Python. You can even write oracle Java certification later on to boost your career.

To succeed in anything, you will need a considerable amount of time learning, practice and internalising. You will be patient while learning and honing your skills.

Don't waste time with YouTube or online coding schools. It's for those that already know their way around coding.

Do not go for HTML5, css and JavaScript lessons. Do not go for new and shiny stuffs like Js and the likes. You can add those later when you have mastered Core programming languages.

Web Design is not real career. Don't come to be begging for website design on Nairaland.com like a good number of us.

Take this advice from a 39yo man like you and you will not regret it.

Cheers.
Thanks dear, are you suggesting that this online learning that is the rave of the moment is not a pathway to follow?

Well, that was my initial thought about coding until I started seeing some testimonies of folks that doesn't have such background neither did they work on that, but proclaiming how they became programmers. Well am coming from an Engineering background (civil) so am quiet abreast with the maths terms.

I ve taken the most unconventional approach to learning programming.
Being unserious in secondary school, it affected my progress in 2018.
You need to settle any problem you have with math if you dont want any issues. Google pdfdrive.com and download in this order developmental math for college students, college algebra and trigonometry, linear algebra, classical geometry, calculus, advanced calculus, vector calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations. If you want to avoid begging to build websites on nairaland, avoid web development, android or any shiny applications until you're theoretically grounded.

I know such questions are littered in the forum but please, I want this to be seen as my perspective.

Id like to start by saying i fiished with a Third Class. However, upon taking GREand having a score of 303 as well as 4/6 in the Analytical Writing. i currently teach and prepare candidates for GRE while im currently processing my admission.

Im aware that the odds against the average Nigerian Student are quite unevenl distributed due to the inconsistent internet access as well as other factors.

GRE hit me a a time when really had no fall back option, hence i gave it my best and went all out within my limited preparation time. i was able to acheive a score above 300 out of 340 (Combaine Quant and Verbal) as well as a score of 4 out of 6 in the Analtical Writing Section.

Haven gotten two Admission offers already, i decided to give back by teaching candidates how to beat ETD gre by preparing he GRE way.

Im open to questions as well as consultations.

Once again pls, this is not a job advert but simply an olive branch to anyone needing help or clarification regarding Blasting the GRE.
pls can whatsapp me on that number I really need your help.
