Protesters stopped the controversial Exhibit B performance at a Paris theatre on Thursday evening, accusing it of being racist and exploitative. The theatre’s management, backed by several anti-racist groups, has vowed to continue showing the show by South African artist Brett Bailey.

About 100 demonstrators smashed through the doors of the Gérard Philippe de Saint-Denis theatre in Saint Denis, just outside Paris, after two evening performances had already taken place, forcing the cancellation of any further ones.

Exhibit B presents performers in tableaux recalling atrocities and indignities inflicted on Africans under colonialism and apartheid in a form that recalls the human zoos organized in Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

“The only thing they show is people in atrocious situations and atrocities are not enough to tell history,” a protester told France24 TV.

“This show makes money from the memory of our grandparents,” another commented. “The new blacks say no.”

Bailey insists that his performances are anti-racist and the performers, who are all black, have backed him.

“As they move through the exhibit, we watch them and witness anger, grief, pity, sadness, compassion,” they said in a statement after protests in Britain earlier this year. “Above all, we witness a dawning of awareness. This is why we keep doing this, and would keep on doing it, if we could.”
British-born left-wing activist John Mullen, who has organized a petition against Exhibit B in France, does not agree.

“A white author uses black bodies to talk to other whites about their feelings in relation to colonialism. And uses public funds in a multi-ethnic town to do so,” he comments on his blog.

The Saint Denis theatre’s director Jean Bellorini says he is defending artistic freedom.

The first underwater hotel in Africa has opened off the remote island of Pemba, part of the archipelago of Zanzibar, in Tanzania.

The hotel is 250m (820 ft) out to sea and consists of three floors, including a dining room and an upper deck for star-gazing. The bedroom is below deck completely submerged by water and provides a 360-degree view of sea life.

At the cost of $900 (TSh1, 485,000) per night, you can share your world with sea creatures including fish.

Namibia will vote in Africa’s first electronic ballot on Friday, a general election that will usher in a new president and quotas to put more women in government.

But opposition parties have launched an eleventh-hour challenge to the use of the Indian-made e-voting machines, claiming the lack of a paper trail could open the door to vote rigging.

They are calling for the elections to be delayed until February. A court is expected to rule on the issue on Wednesday, but commentators say the vote is almost certain to go ahead.

If and when it does, Namibians will choose 72 members of the national assembly and one of nine presidential candidates, ranging from the left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters to the white minority Republican Party.

About 1.2-million Namibians are eligible to cast their ballots at nearly 4,000 electronic voting stations across this vast desert nation.

But there is only one likely winner. Swapo candidate and current prime minister 73-year-old Hage Geingo has run on a platform of “peace, stability and prosperity” and is sure to become the new president.

Swapo was forged from the embers of the anti-colonial and anti-apartheid struggle and has won every election since Namibia’s independence from SA in 1990.

“I was born Swapo,” said Hosea, a Windhoek student who vowed to vote for the party of liberation this Friday.

According to pollsters, the party remains hugely popular.

The question will be whether discontent over social and economic issues will eat into Swapo’s support, eroding its 75% haul garnered in 2009.

Single mother of four Gredula Nashima, 39, said she will vote for Swapo again this time, but wants to see change.

Sitting in the dirt outside her zinc panel shack by a pile of bones, she talks about unemployment, poor housing and a lack of electricity as she artfully, but violently, butchers cow’s heads with an axe.

Hacking and smashing at the skulls, she renders the meat to small strips that are hung on a clothesline to be dried and sold, or made into “Kapana” — slices of grilled meat. The leftover bones are sold to a fertiliser company.

“We want to see our leader, whoever will be in the seat, to look at our living conditions, our roads are not tarred, but we also want help for those who have their own businesses,” she said.

Like many Namibians she remains sceptical about opposition parties and their motives.

“I don’t know their intentions and their objectives. If I did know I would be with them,” she said.

Like many of Africa’s liberation movements, Swapo has become a big-tent party that spans the political spectrum and often seems more involved with intraparty politics than voters.

The commemoration of the first anniversary of the death of former president Nelson Mandela will start with a wreath laying ceremony at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on December 5, government said on Thursday.

“Veterans of the struggle for freedom and those who fought side by side with Madiba against apartheid will be invited to lead the wreath laying,” Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini told journalists in Cape Town.

“This ceremony will be open to all South Africans and members of the public are invited also to visit the site throughout the day to lay wreaths.”

The wreath laying will start at 8am.President Jacob Zuma will be in China for a state visit on December 5.Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was expected to attend and address the official commemoration ceremony at Freedom Park in Pretoria later in the day on December 5.

Government would also be encouraging schools, factories, and places of worship to ring their bells and sirens at exactly three minutes and seven seconds before 10am to “call the country to attention”.

South Africans would be asked to observe a moment of silence up to 10.03am.

“You will notice that the time lapse from the ringing of the bells to the end of the moment of silence is six minutes, seven seconds. This is symbolic of the 67 years Madiba spent in the service of humanity,” said Dlamini.

Africa’s Youngest Billionaire Ashish Thakkar To Battle WhatsApp With The Launch Of Mara Messenger

Africa’s youngest billionaire and Founder of The Mara Group, Ashish Thakkar, is set to challenge the dominance of WhatsApp in Africa, with the launch of a new messaging App made for Africans across the globe.

The Ugandan businessman, who spoke at the launch of the new Mara Messenger, in Dubai, on Saturday, said that the new app has been custom-made to meet the needs of Africans and will enable them connect with contacts around the world.

“The launch of Mara Messenger marks the dawn of a new era in Africa. For the first time, we will have a truly home-grown messaging platform that is tailored to the individual cultures of the continent,” Forbes quoted Thakkar as saying in an interview.

Thakkar has his sights on WhatsApp, WeChat and Viber, messaging apps he said Mara Messenger will be looking to compete with.

Although there are no specific data for the number of users of the top messaging apps in Africa, The Statistics Portal provided data on the the global user base of WhatsApp and WeChat.

According to the online data source, WeChat had 438 million users in the second quarter of 2014, while WhatsApp had more than 600 million active users as of August 2014, to remain world’s most popular mobile messenger app. These figures are however not frightening to Thakkar, who assured that a couple of newfangled features that the messaging App will offer will earn it a competitive advantage.

Thakkar, who also founded Mara Foundation and Mara Mentor, expressed plan to offer Mara Messenger in multiple languages, across multiple devices, which will make it accessible to everyone across Africa and the world.
“It’s always been my dream to see African innovations going global and Mara Online is one such case in point which further demonstrates that we as Africa can be innovative, can dare to go global, and succeed!” he said.

Mara messenger is now available for free on Android, Blackberry and iOS. It requests for the user’s full name, phone number and birthday, after which it sends a verification code to register users. Once registered, users can edit gender, add a profile picture and a status message. The app include features that will allow users to use instant messaging, share locations, doodle on images and broadcast information to groups.
