Studies by Journal Biology of Reproduction have confirmed that eating around two handfuls of walnuts (popularly called ukpa in Igbo language and Asala in Yoruba dialect) a day improves sperm health in young men. Sperm shape, movement and vitality improved in men who added walnuts to their diet over a period of 11 weeks. Reports have it that the fatty acids found in these nuts are thought to have helped sperm development. It is not known if this would help improve male fertility. About one in six couples are infertile, with 40% of these due to a male factor. This food is available in the market and you can see hawkers carrying it around the streets. Worldwide infertility is generally quoted as occurring in 8-12% of all couples. Infertility rates among married couples in African countries range from 20% to 35%. As quoted by him “Up till now, there is no optometry department in both State and Federal Ministries of Health and other tertiary healthcare institutions in Nigeria,’’ he said.
