Nigerian authorities should immediately release journalist Ime Sunday Silas, drop the charges against him, and reform the country’s cybercrime act to ensure it is not used against the press, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

On August 17, police in Uyo city, the capital of Nigeria’s southern Akwa-Ibom state, arrested Silas, an editor with the privately owned Global Concord newspaper and publisher of the news website The Profile, according to Solomon Johnny, Global Concord’s editor-in-chief, who spoke to CPJ via messaging app.

Acting Managing Director of the Interim Management Committee of the NDDC, Professor Daniel Keme Pondei, fainted during a public hearing by the House of Representatives Committee probing allegations of financial recklessness in NDDC Monday.

Pondei collapsed while he was being asked by lawmakers to explain why the commission under his leadership made huge payments to companies without appropriation.

Offiicals of the commission present at the hearing made efforts to revive him and later moved him out of the venue of the public hearing.



Earlier, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee onNDDC, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, had recused himself from the public hearing, stepping aside for the Deputy Chairman, Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, to take over the ongoing probe.

The public hearing has been adjourned for 30 minutes.

The remains of late Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile, the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF’s) first female combat helicopter pilot, who died on 14 July 2020, will be laid to rest with full military honours at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja on 23 July 2020.

The Nigerian Airforce made the disclosure in Friday just as the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar received some members of the Federal Executive Council as well as members of the National Assembly who visited him at Headquarters NAF at various times on Thursday, 16 July 2020, to condole with him over the unfortunate demise of the young NAF pilot.

Joi Nunieh the former managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has secured the protection of the court against police arrest.

Some policemen from Abuja tried to arrest her in her home in Port Harcourt on Thursday, but the effort was scuppered by Governor Nyesom Wike.

He drove to her house and took her to the Government House.

Unknown gunmen on Tuesday killed one and abducted two family members of Salisu Usman-Maku, elder brother to Labaran Maku, a former Minister of Information.

A family member, who preferred anonymity, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia that the gunmen stormed their house at Gudi village of Akwanga Local Government Area in the early hours of Tuesday.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a former Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Executive Director (ED), Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba, to seven years imprisonment for laundering N1.5 billion.

Agaba, who was in charge of Maritime, Safety and Shipping, was said to have looted the money from the agency.

Suspected Nigerian fraudster Ramon Abbas aka Hushupuppi, failed to win bail in the US after his lawyers claimed his job as an Instagram celebrity paid for the $10,000 monthly rent on his luxury Dubai flat.

Mr Abbas, 37, known to millions on social media as Hushpuppi, was arrested in Dubai and taken to the US.

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) office broken into on Thursday’s midnight has been linked to the suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

At least seven computers containing sensitive financial information were taken away from the NFIU’s and others badly damaged.

The NFIU was severed from the EFCC following the suspension of Nigeria by the Egmont Group in 2017.

One of the grounds for the suspension was that the Nigeria financial intelligence unit (NFIU) was not independent.

The suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has allegedly been accused of turning EFCC into `glorified police station’ for alleged selfish motives.

The accusation was contained in a report submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari by the investigative committee set up to look into the activities of the EFCC under Magu.

According to the report, Magu has continued seconding police officers to the EFCC despite the massive recruitment of officers and men carried out by the commission in recent years.

A US-based Nigerian doctor on Saturday warned his fellow doctors to be circumspect about their protection routine.

The Nephrologist in Bronx, New York City (name withheld) contracted in the course of his job.

He recounted how he got infected during a ZOOM meeting with 20 other African medical practitioners.

According to him it all came about because of his unguarded examination of an asymptomatic patient using a face mask he had used more than once.
