Health / Re: 5 Ways To Improve Your Memory by RxH8: 7:56am On Aug 18, 2017
1. Be emotionally involved
The brain naturally remembers what you are interested in. Your interest in a subject helps you to be attentive enough to register the information. It will also motivate you to devote time and effort to understanding concepts and relationships between the parts that make the whole picture. For example, knowing how prescriptions make us feel better would enhance our ability to follow the regimen. To sustain interest, you may need to regularly remind yourself of your reasons for paying attention in the first instance. Being emotionally involved explains why it is a lot easier to remember things when your loved ones are involved. We rarely have to be reminded of memorable occasions because we care about your family members and close friends.

2. Be organized
You may need to categorize similar concepts or related ideas. Doing so clearly facilitates recall. For example, phone numbers may be broken into two or three parts for easy recall. Some arrange items in alphabetical order. If you have a shopping list, why not group items into categories such as vegetables, fruits, toys and clothes.

3. Use multiple senses
Can you use your sense of sight and sound? Yes. When we repeat things to ourselves, we are forced to pay close attention, involve more parts of the brain and receive immediate feedback. This enhances the experience making recall easier. Some have found it helpful to draw or create a mental picture which further embeds the information.

‘I can’t find my keys!’ ‘Could you please remind me of your name’? ‘Sorry, I forgot’ How many times have you made similar statements? Have you ever found it hard to recall things, places, people, names and conversations? Do you sometimes feel frustrated at your inability to recall important dates? If so, you are not alone. Forgetfulness is a very common experience for many people.

No doubt, having a good memory is a vital part of healthy living. Our brain has the capacity to remember huge amounts of information because millions of neural connections facilitate storing and retrieval of facts and figures.

It is important to note that no one needs to store everything indefinitely. In fact, there are some things we would rather forget. Nevertheless, you need to regularly retain significant information for limited periods. This is called short term memory. For example, short term memory helps you retain information to compare prices of items on your shopping list.

In contrast, many of us would like to have the capacity to remember things or past events we treasure or cherish. This is called long term memory, which is also very important. Long term memory helps you to recall special moments, occasions, anniversaries or time spent with loved ones?

At the 2016 memory championship held in Singapore, The overall winner, Alex Mullen, a medical student moved from being an individual with an average memory to a World champion with the ability to recall 3,029 numbers in an hour and a whole pack of cards in 21.5 seconds with just 3 years of training. What an amazing feat!

Many of us have can improve our memory by refining the way we receive, store and retrieve information. Would you like to sharpen your memory? What can you do to ensure you are making the most of your brain’s potential to store information? Follow these 5 expert tips for improving your memory.

What can you do to prevent your drinks from being spiked?

Consider these suggestions from experts:

Never leave your drink unattended and keep an eye on your friends’ drinks.

Don’t accept a drink from someone you don’t know.

Consider sticking to bottled drinks and avoiding jugs of cocktails.

Don’t give out your address to someone you’ve just met.

If you think your drink has been tampered with, don’t drink it – tell a trusted friend or relative immediately.

Before going out, let someone know where you’re going and what time you expect to be home.

Make plans for your journey home.

Avoid taking expensive equipment with you or anything that could be a target for thieves.

If you are travelling abroad, be aware of the local area and where you can find help.

How can you tell if a drink has been spiked?

Do not expect to see changes in the taste, smell or colour of drinks that have been spiked. Most people, are unable to tell if someone has added a drug to their beverage until they have had a drink. Nevertheless, these are some of the common things to look for:

Disinhibition-The person is no longer self-conscious and has a strong urge to do whatever comes to mind
Difficulty in concentration or speaking
Difficulty maintaining balance
Nausea and vomiting
These may progress to loss of consciousness, disorientation or confusion on waking up
Most of these symptoms mimic features of excessive alcohol use but occur 15 to 30 minutes after ingesting the drug.

Although, most drugs are added to drinks, it is important to note that some persons add hard drugs or substances to food items too. In Nigeria, there have been anecdotal reports of individuals behaving irrationally after eating cakes during parties. Some persons regularly add cannabis or other drugs to meals such as noodles and beans too, so you may need ask before eating.

More information on “date rape” drugs

Date rape drugs are actually prescription drugs used to spike a person’s drinks or beverages with the intent of assaulting them sexually. Spiking drinks involve adding drugs and other substances to beverages without a person’s knowledge. It is relatively common among young people during parties and other social events.

Mischa Barton, a popular actress that as Marissa Cooper in the drama The O.C., was hospitalized in 2017 after her friends drugged her with GHB during her birthday.

In a statement to People she said:

On the evening of the 25th, I went out with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday. While having drinks, I realized that something was not right as my behavior was becoming erratic and continued to intensify over the next several hours.

I voluntarily went to get professional help, and I was informed by their staff that I had been given GHB. After an overnight stay, I am home and doing well. I would like to extend a big thanks of gratitude to the professionals at Cedars-Sinai for their great care and professionalism. This is a lesson to all young women out there, be aware of your surroundings.

Do you know that hundreds of persons become victims of date rape in the United kingdom every year?

In developing countries, many cases of rape are undocumented and health care workers may need to devise more ways of eliciting rape information from victims so as to effectively manage their health problems.

Why do people spike drinks? Commonly, this is considered fun (as a prank) during parties to get someone to behave or act irrationally. However, it may also be used to steal or assault others sexually. In many countries, it is a crime to spike other people’s drinks irrespective of the intent. In the UK, convicted persons may spend up to 10 years in prison.

GHB is one of the popular drugs used to spike drinks with the intent of assaulting an individual. That is why it is popularly considered a ‘date rape’ drug. GHB is abused by teens and young adults at bars, parties, clubs and “raves” (all night dance parties), and is often placed in alcoholic beverages.

Why is it very popular among young people?

It is known to cause euphoria and increase sex drive, two things that make such parties attractive.

The other common drugs are Valium, Rohypnol and Ketamine.
Health / Scientists Now Have A Better Way Of Detecting A Common ‘date Rape’ Drug by RxH8: 12:46pm On Aug 17, 2017
Scientists have improved the detection of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (a popular date rape drug), according to a new study. Despite scientific advances, gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) had been undetectable in the body within 2 hours of use, which partly explained its widespread use by sexual predators. Now, a new method recently published by scientist makes it possible to detect GHB up to 20 hours after ingestion. If established, this may improve conviction rates of persons who use date rape drugs on unsuspecting individuals.

The study was published August, 2017 in the journal of Analytical Chemistry.

According to the researchers, glycolate, a metabolite of GHB, might be a good biomarker for the drug. This metabolite can be found in the urine up to 20 hours after the drug was taken which could form a basis for tests that could be performed much later than current ones.

Currently, convicting perpetrators of date rape cases has been challenging because the drugs commonly used is rapidly excreted from the body. Because these drugs affect the victims’ behaviour and cause memory loss, prosecutors are often unable to establish that the drugs were used and are left with trying to locate witnesses whose testimonies may not be reliable.

Unfortunately, many of these date rape drugs are available on prescription. In some countries, the drugs are sold on the streets, at party venues and unlicensed stores.

Is it really possible to drink too much water?

Yes. If you have a major health condition like heart failure, you should consult your doctor before deciding to drink 8-10 glasses of water daily as recommend by medical experts. This is because additional problems may arise if you take too much in certain health conditions. Some chronic medical conditions limit the kidney’s capacity to process water.

Even in healthy persons with normal kidney functioning, taking too much water may be dangerous. For instance, in 2015, about 14 sports-persons died from drinking too much water. Consumption of large quantities of water over a short period of time resulted in sudden decreases in the body’s salt levels. This is known as ‘exercise induced hyponatremia’. This prompted a panel of experts to provide guidelines for how much water should be consumed before, during and after exercise. According to Dr Tamara Hew-Butler, the lead author of the guidelines, ‘we should listen to our bodies and let go of the pervasive advice that if a little is good, and then more is better’.

Some experts suggest that listening to your body is all you need to know if you are taking enough water. Others have recommended taking at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.

Clearly, more evidence is needed to determine what is exactly required for a healthy water balance.

No doubt, water remains the most important drink worldwide. In terms of health benefits, no beverage comes close to it. Nevertheless, drinking ‘plenty of water’ over a short period may overwhelm the body’s system and result in serious illness or death.

Health / What's The Danger In Drinking Too Much Water by RxH8: 9:01pm On Aug 15, 2017
Water is essential to life. It is possible to go without food for several weeks. But no one can last more than a week without taking water. The human body inevitably loses water every minute. Every breath, sweat, bowel movement and urination leads to loss of body water. Surely, you need to replenish this regularly.

Nevertheless, the volume of water you need to maintain a healthy balance constantly changes from day to day. This poses a challenge for many because how they respond to the body’s dynamic need for water determines how hydrated they are. Because drinking water is harmless, doctors usually recommend taking ‘plenty of water’ when people fall ill.

However, before you take this recommendation literally, consider this case report published in the British Medical Journal.

In 2016, a 59 year old woman decided to ‘flush’ urinary tract infection from her system by drinking several liters of water. According to her, she was acting on the age-long advice to drink ‘lots of water’ when ill. However, she fell seriously ill and was admitted to King’s College Hospital with low levels of salt in her blood. According to the doctors, ‘She was progressively shaky and muddled. She vomited several times, was tremulous and exhibited significant speech difficulties. ’ The doctors had to restrict water intake to about 1 liter over 24 hours to get her well.

This case report highlights the need for more evidence to support the well-known ‘drink plenty of fluids’ advice and suggest that too much water can be dangerous in some cases of infective illness.

Health / Re: World’s Oldest Man Dies Within A Month Of Reaching 114 Years by RxH8: 6:50pm On Aug 14, 2017
Who is the oldest person that ever lived in recent times?

There have been several claims to this title. However, most of these have been difficult to authenticate. According to the Guinness book of world records, that title belongs to Jeanne Louise who died at the age of 22 years 164 days. Jeanne Louise Calment (France). Born on 21 February 1875 to Nicolas (1837 – 1931) and Marguerite (neé Gilles 1838 – 1924). She died in 1997.

She was born on 21 February 1875, around 14 years before the Eiffel Tower was constructed (she saw it being built), and some 15 years before the advent of movies.

In an interesting twist, her lawyer aged 47 years who felt she was close to the grave at the age of 90 years, offered to pay her 2,500 francs per month until her death, so he could inherit her property. Guess what? She outlived him and ended up collecting double the value of her property.

What could have contributed to her longevity? No one really knows for sure. Her lifestyle involved good things such as exercise-swimming, playing tennis, cycling (she was still cycling until the age of 100) and diet rich in olive oil. However, she also ate lots of sugar rich products such as chocolate and smoked cigarettes from the age from 21 years till the age of 117 years!

Clearly, some genetic factors may have played a role too.

According to an expert ”Mr Kristal’s achievement is remarkable – he can teach us all an important lesson about the value of life and how to stretch the limits of human longevity.”

What is the secret to his longevity? Speaking at the time of receiving his award last year, he admitted he did not know the secret to a long life. According to Mr Kristal

I believe that everything is determined from above and we shall never know the reasons why. There have been smarter, stronger and better looking men then me who are no longer alive. All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost.

The oldest man to have ever lived in recent times is Jiroemon Kimura who was born in 1897. He is the first man in history to have lived to 116 years old and continues to hold the world record for the Oldest man ever, according to the Guinness book of World records. Mr Kimura became the Oldest man ever on 28 December 2012, at the age of 115 years 253 days, breaking the record set by Christian Mortensen of Denmark/USA (1882–1998).

This is a rare genetic disorder that can be inherited. It may be associated iwth some health conditions in rare cases. These includes: bone and eye abnormalities e.g., retinal dysplasia, pigmentary dystrophy, and juvenile cataract.

In many countries, where going natural is the trend, having one that is difficult to manage can be challenging.

According to experts, there is no specific treatment for uncombable hair syndrome, however, it usually improves or resolves on its own with the onset of puberty. Conditioners, using soft brushes, along with avoiding harsh hair treatments such as permanent waves (perms); chemical relaxants; or excessive brushing and blow drying have been recommended.

What do you think about this rare condition? Are there specific ways of managing it?

Shilah Yin, a 7-year-old girl from Melbourne, Australia, has a condition known as uncombable hair syndrome.

7-year-old Shilah Yin is one of only around 100 people in the world with a condition known as “uncombable hair syndrome”. Instead of downwards, her hair grows out from the scalp in multiple directions, and can’t be combed flat.

Shilah, from Melbourne, Australia, was born with normal hair, but her parents noticed a strawberry blond fuzz growing on her scalp when she was 3 months old. From then on, her hair started growing straight out and became even blonder. The girl noticed her unusual hair when she was about 4, after it started getting a lot of attention from other children and adults. It made her feel uneasy at first, but after her parents told her it was special, she embraced her unique look. The unruly hair is very tough to manage. Her mother sprays it with a detangling solution every morning, and spends 10-20 minutes combing it very gently with a wide-tooth comb. Her father then blow-dries to make it nice and fluffy, just the way Shilah likes it.

That doesn’t make much sense, but it’s apparently what Jeet Trivedi had to master over several years, in order to perform all kinds of impressive tasks while blindfolded. What kind of tasks, you ask? Well, I think it would be easier to list the things Jeet can’t do blindfolded, because he can pretty much do anything. He can ride a scooter, read books, catch objects thrown at him, find hidden objects, pass a thread through a needle or play chess with three people simultaneously and beat them all.

Is this really possible? There may be a need to objectively verify this claim in unfamiliar surroundings before seeing how to apply the ‘midbrain activation’ technique to persons that have low vision.

Scientific evidence shows that when a person loses their sense of sight, the other four senses are enhanced, allowing them to be more aware of their surroundings even if they can’t see them. 17-year-old Jeet Trivedi is not blind, but he claims that he doesn’t need his eyes to perform tasks like driving, reading or even passing thread through a needle, after training his other senses to a superhuman level.Jeet Trivedi is a controversial figure in India. There are those who see him as a real-life Daredevil, who can function as a normal human being without using his eyes, while others consider him and his mind training teacher, Bharat Patel, as frauds trying to make money by using deceitful tricks. To be honest, it’s hard to believe that someone could drive a gearless scooter for 40 km, on the world’s highest motorable road, while blindfolded, but Jeet allegedly did just that, in September of last year.

“He has very good control over his senses. If we bypass one of his senses, he can perform tasks using the others,” he told Yeh Mera India. “Midbrain Activation is also known as super-sensory development. It enables developing all our senses to an unimaginable extent. It’s sort of scientific training that entails ‘Brain Gym’, which is taught physically, but mainly it’s about the audio practice that stimulates the mind using the frequencies that come through the sound of music.”

In Nigeria, 1090 cases of Lassa fever have been reported in 27 states since 2016. The disease has resulted in the deaths of 143 persons. According to Nigeria Centre for disease control and prevention (NCDC), confirmed cases are being treated at identified treatment/isolation centres across the states with Ribavirin and necessary supportive management also instituted. Special arrangements have been installed to support efforts in Ogun, Nasarawa, Taraba, Ondo and Borno States by the NCDC and partners.

In august, 2017, three persons initially under surveillance for Lassa fever at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, tested positive to the disease raising new concerns about the spread. About 150 people exposed to the cases were immediately placed under surveillance.

To prevent further spread, the burial of one of the deceased patients was handled by the Lafos State Government.

Disclosing these and other developments in a joint press conference of LUTH and Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Chief Medical Director, Prof Chris Bode, explained that the current outbreak was being effectively traced in the field, adding that all persons currently exposed to the index cases were being effectively treated.

“The outbreak is under control. We have enough drugs and we have received enough assistance from partners. Let us please douse the panic created by unguarded statements and if anyone needs to make enquiries, we have already provided hotlines for this,” he said.

Professor Bode, who was optimistic that the outbreak would be defeated, explained that corpses of the deceased who came from neighbouring states, had been professionally managed.

What are the current facts about Zika and Sex?

Are you aware of the following facts from Centers for Disease Control and prevention about Zika and Sex?

People can become infected with Zika when they have sex with any person infected with Zika. This includes vaginal, anal, and MouthAction and the sharing of intimacy gadgets.
While this occurs within a month of infection in females, it may be as long as six months in males
Infected People Can Pass Zika through Sex Even When They Don’t Have Symptoms
Many people infected with Zika virus won’t have symptoms or will only have mild symptoms, and they may not know they have been infected.
A person may also infect others before, during or after the symptoms occur.
Like HIV, the surest way of eliminating the risk of sex transmitted Zika infection is abstinence.

Is it possible for men to trigger Zika outbreaks?

Yes. Men retain Zika virus in their semen for about 6 months, much longer than women. Theoretically, men who become infected during visits to places where Zika-carrying mosquitoes are active could return home and remain potentially sources of infections to their sexual partners for about 6 months.

“Because people usually don’t have symptoms, we mostly care about Zika when it goes into the community of reproducing females,” he says. “But if there are hidden reservoirs of Zika infection out there that can get into the reproducing population, we might want to rethink our surveillance and prevention strategies.”

This information suggests that Zika prevention strategies should not just target women and children but men also. Although, testing is not yet recommended, this study may aid health organizations to review current prevention methods.

Zika is the only mosquito borne virus that is sexually transmitted. While current efforts target infected mothers and children, this may not be sufficient. Why? Men who can potentially transmit Zika virus via sex may trigger widespread infections, according to a new study.

This was published August 2017 in the peer reviewed journal, National Academy of Sciences.

The researchers wanted to know if Zika outbreaks could occur without mosquitoes. “We wanted to know what’s the biggest outbreak we can get,” says Hébert-Dufresne, the main author.

“Zika has a lot of unusual characteristics that have caused scientists a lot of confusion. Infected people rarely have symptoms, and typically only reproducing women get tested, so we know very little about the true extent of Zika’s sexual transmission.” says Hébert-Dufresne according to Science daily.

This information should be a source of concern to parents, caregivers and policymakers because it has been reported that girls aged 15–19 are five times more likely to be infected with HIV than boys their age.

According to the authors, a better understanding of the effect of early menstruation on sexual and reproductive health, helps us to identify new approaches, including when sexual education and access to reproductive health services should begin.

The Falling age of menstruation

Several studies have showed that the age a girl begins her period (menarche) has been falling in the past decades. About 50 years ago, it was about 16-17years but has declined to 10-13years in recent times. Although uncommon, there have been reports of girls having their first menstruation at the early age of 6 or 7 years. Some researchers have attributed this decline to chemicals in the environment. And this study has suggested it may have serious lifelong social, physical and emotional implications too.

In Nigeria, the age at which girls begin their menstruation vary from 12 years reported in the South East to 15 years reported in Northern Nigeria. Generally well nourished girls with higher Body mass Indices were likely to begin menstruation early.

According to the study published by Mobolaji Ibitoye and others, in a sample of adolescent girls aged 13–19 from Nigeria, those that had their first ‘period’ at or before age 13 were significantly more likely to be sexually active than those than begin theirs at age 14 or older.

Girls are more likely to have sex, get pregnant and even have sexually transmitted infections if they begin menstruation early, a new study has reported.

The study involved a review of several studies done in low and middle income countries. It was conducted by researchers at Columbia university and published on June, 7 in PLOS one.

The studies looked at data collected in African countries such as Nigeria, Malawi, South Africa, Zimbabwe and other low and middle income settings such as India, Nepal and Jamaica.

The main finding was that when a girl begins her menstruation early in life (defined as menstruation before the age of 14 years) this increases the likelihood that she will:

Receive sexual advances from older men
Have early onset of sexual intercourse
Have sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis, gonorrhea and HIV
Become pregnant and have a child at a younger age
According to the lead author Mobolaji Ibitoye in a statement released to Sciencedaily, “despite possible similarities in the relationship between early menarche (first menstruation) and sexual and reproductive health in low-, middle- and high-income countries, the factors associated with early menarche and early marriage may differ across ethnic groups within the same country. This highlights the need for a greater understanding of the cultural and regional variations in the effect of age at menarche on age at marriage both within and between countries.”

Q:If eyes come in contact with chemicals or particles, how should this be handled.

A:If particles enter the eye, the first aid is to open the eye bin a bowl of clean water. If there is feeling of the particle still stuck to the eye, DO NOT RUB THE EYE, this may lead to abrasion of the corneal which may leave a scar. See a trained eye personnel as soon as possible for foreign-body removal in a safe manner. In cases of chemical eye injury( which is an ocular emergency),irrigate the eye IMMEDIATELY with copious continuously running clean water or Normal saline or Ringers lactate if available. See an OPHTHALMOLOGIST IMMEDIATELY because the damage may progress as some chemical particles may still be lodged under the eyelid.

Q:Really...but the first thing that comes to the eye is RUBBING

A:That's true but it is the wrong thing to do

This was highlighted by another female participant who said:

I do remember my mother always regretting she didn’t have a job outside the home and that was something that influenced me and all my sisters. […] She’d encourage us to find a career where we could work. She was quite academic herself, more educated than my father, but because of the nature of families and young children, she’d had to become this stay-at-home parent

Why is this information important?

This research highlights the important role parents play in influencing their children’s priorities in life. Children are likely to value their parent’s priorities, so making a conscious effort to establish goals based on the right priorities would provide a sound foundation for your children.

With the rise of technology, employers can easily track the activities of their staff beyond the traditional 8-5 workday. Emails, mobile phones and apps leave many employees vulnerable to bosses who use results as benchmarks for appraisals while setting ever increasing targets.

Although, it has never been easier to stay connected, you should always remember that connectivity is not availability. Therefore, decide when you need to stay connected to your job…and stick to it.

This was expressed by one of the female participants, a director of an accounting firm who said:

My mum raised us…she was always at home and to some extent I feel guilty for not giving my children the same because I feel she raised me well and she had control over the situation. I’m not there every day … and I feel like I’ve failed them in a way because I leave them with somebody else. I sometimes think maybe I should be at home with them until they are a bit older.

So it is important to remember that “We are not blank slates when we join the workforce — many of our attitudes are already deeply engrained from childhood,” according Dr Loana Lupu.

In many countries like Nigeria where women traditionally stayed at home, things have changed. Some mothers that stayed at home drummed the importance of having a career to their female children because of how being financially dependent on their husbands affected them when the relationship turned sour. Therefore, children that grow up in that setting are likely to put work ahead of family in other to maintain a degree of financial independence. Doing this without undermining family life can be challenging.

Health / Work Or Family- Which One Really Comes First? by RxH8: 7:51am On Aug 11, 2017
Many individuals have to make a choice between work and family due to ever increasing demands of their employers. Which one really comes first? Work or family? Do you know that certain things beyond your control may also influence how you balance work and life? This was the focus of a new study which revealed that your childhood experiences in the family play a key role in your attitude to work.

The study was published August, 2017 in the Journal of Human relations.

According to the researchers, what children learn from their parents about balancing work with family life, affects how they feel about work-life balance when they grow up.

The authors arrived at these conclusions after interviewing 78 male and female participants recruited from legal and accounting firms.

They found that men who grew up in households where fathers were breadwinners and mothers, home makers, clearly prioritized work ahead of spending time with family members.

Here is one of remarks made by a male participant who has a family with two children:

I’ve always had a very strong work ethic drilled into me anyway, again by my parents, my family. So, I never needed anyone looking over my shoulder or giving me a kick up the backside and telling me I needed to do something — I’d get on and I’d do it. So, I found the environment [of the accountancy firm] in general one that suited me quite well.”

On the other hand, women in similar households had guilt feelings and were really concerned about balancing work with family life. According to Dr Lupu, a co-author, such women “work like their fathers but want to parent like their mothers.”
