Seek the advice of a qualified health professional
Life problems can be overwhelming and your resources may be inadequate to cope. When this occurs, don’t hesitate to seek the help of close friends, family or a qualified health professional. Don’t be reluctant to open up to them about the problem. A health expert can help us understand the illness, resolve practical problems and reinforce the need not to give up on yourself and treatment.

In conclusion, we all deserve to live a happy healthy life. Regardless of your personal circumstances, a positive well-being is an achievable goal. Always set your priorities, sleep well, exercise daily, eat healthy, worry less, drink less, read and meditate, spend time with your loved ones, think positively and consult your doctor.

Feed your mind
An unhealthy mind, even in a healthy body, will ultimately affect health. Spending time reading and mediating greatly enhances your outlook in life. Benjamin Franklin wrote that ‘reading makes a full man, meditation a profound man, discourse a clear man’. Meditation might help people with depression or anxiety shift their thoughts from harmful patterns. It helps you to stay positive and see things from another perspective. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body (Joseph Addison). Regularly reading books such as the bible links you to a superior source of strength and inspiration. This will help in coping with everyday stress.

Limit alcohol and nonprescribed drug use
A moderate use of alcohol may reduce the risk of heart disease. However, excess or daily consumption damages the liver and leads to a rise in blood pressure and an increased cholesterol level. Heavy drinking impairs judgment, memory and can result in uncontrolled speech and actions. Rather than drinking to become smart, successful or happy as depicted in movies, many people actually end up broke, bitter and alone. Research shows that cigarette and marijuana use can lead to damaged lungs, cancers, accidents and poor work and academic performance. On the average, smoking kills 1 person every 6 seconds. Marijuana doubles the risk of suffering from severe mental illness such as schizophrenia. Abstaining from these addictive substances significantly result in improved well-being and stability.

Eat a nutritious and balanced diet

Good health is impossible without good nutrition, and for good nutrition you need a healthy, balanced diet. The father of medicine, Hippocrates said ‘let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’. To achieve good health, you may need to consider your intake of salt, fats, and sugar. If you eat too many sugars and solid fats, you risk becoming overweight. To minimize this risk, drink water instead of sweet beverages. Include fruits and vegetables in your diet. Limit your intake of solid fats from such items as sausages, meat, butter, cakes, cheese, and cookies. Too much salt, or sodium, in the diet can raise your blood pressure to an unhealthy level. Natural whole-grain foods are richer in nutrients and fiber than the alternatives made from refined grain. For proteins, eat small and lean portions of meat and poultry and try to eat fish a couple of times a week, if possible. The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison – Ann Wigmore.

Stay physically active

Regardless of your age, you need regular physical activity to stay healthy and in good shape. It is recommended that adults should get 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity every week. Staying physically active can help you to, sleep well, and maintain or achieve a healthy weight. Exercise also has great benefits for mental health. It releases endorphins that make you feel happy. It has being said that exercise is the most underutilized antidepressant. On the contrary, if you do not stay physically active, you are more likely to suffer from heart disease, diabetes and hypertension. To sustain a fitness program, it is best to choose an activity that is fun. You might consider basketball, tennis, soccer, brisk walking, cycling, gardening, jogging, or other aerobic exercise.

Get enough sleep
A good sleep is essential to health. A notable quote from Thomas Dekker, an American film actor says ‘sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together’. How true! Most persons need six to eight hours of sleep every night to look, feel, and perform at our best. Young persons may need more. During sleep your body and brain repair themselves, improving memory and mood. Sleep reinforces the immune system and reduces our risk of infection, diabetes, stroke, heart disease, cancer, obesity, depression, and Alzheimer’s. Therefore, getting adequate sleep is an especially important prevention strategy. Indeed, your body can overcome some illnesses, such as a cold, if you simply get some extra sleep.

Maintain a balanced and stable daily routine
In today’s fast paced world, you may find it difficult to maintain a balanced routine. For instance, you may have a demanding schedule of work, study, networking and caring for family members. Nevertheless, it may not be feasible to stop or suspend some of your daily activities. This may keep stress levels high and weaken your body’s defenses against illnesses. What then can you do maintain a balanced and stable daily routine? Identify your priorities. Make certain of the more important things. Remember, you can do anything, but not everything. Such things as social media networking, mindless internet surfing, excessive television watching wastes time and adds to a stressful lifestyle. Consider simplifying your life, perhaps by reducing expenses.

4. Tap into the Benefits of Solitude
You cannot be in the presence of others all the time. Many high profile individuals crave for moments of privacy-without security details, paparazzi and the general public-when they can really be alone. You should treasure moments of aloneness too. Ask yourself: What can I choose to do to stop feeling lonely? Then plan ahead for such moments by writing down specific things to do. You could use periods of solitude to plan, meditate or learn new things or skills. Some use the time to read, write or enjoy interests like cooking and gardening. Indeed, having such hobbies may make finding friends easier.

5. Reach Out to Others to overcome Loneliness
It is easy to conclude you have been deliberately left out by your friends. Do not let this disturb you from reaching out to others. Do not limit your friends to a particular age group, social status or race. You will discover pleasant and exciting moments when you show genuine interest in others. Yes, showing interest in the needs and feelings of others reduces your attention to negative thoughts and lonely feelings.

Do not fall into the trap of loneliness. Consider fighting it by taking these 5 practical steps.

Have you ever felt lonely? Do you sometimes feel left out of all the fun? Try out these 5 practical steps in dealing with loneliness.

1. Learn to Develop True Friendship
Yes, you may have many friends, but how many are really close and supportive? How many are willing to give a listening ear when you need it? Take the initiative. Say ‘hello!’ Learn to initiate and make real friends. You should nourish your friends with time and attention. Because of changing circumstances, some may no longer live nearby. That shouldn’t prevent you from keeping in touch with them. Sometimes reconnecting with old friends may be all we need to ride out overwhelming feelings of loneliness.

2. Engage in Social activities
Do you have a hobby? Can you pick up fun activities, pursue new interest or join new groups? These will help you stay fresh and kick out boredom-a platform for thoughts of loneliness. Many games and sports involve social interactions with others. You may invite people over for group games like scrabble and card games. Be persistent, if one does not work, try another. Remember to turn up when invited to social events. You might be surprised by how much you enjoy the occasion.

3. Be Kind and Generous to Others
It is not just enough to identify the needs of others. Try to offer practical help and words of encouragement and advice. You may consider volunteering for community development projects or be part of non-governmental initiatives. Being kind to others allows you to reconnect with people, boost your self-esteem and conquer feelings of loneliness.

Health / 5 Ways To Overcome Loneliness by RxH8: 5:07pm On Aug 09, 2017
Loneliness is a consistent challenge for many people today. If unchecked it is easy to conclude that no one likes you. One challenge of being lonely is that it increases a person’s vulnerability. For instance, in the course of craving for attention, some have settled for anyone who accepts them as a friend, making themselves easy prey for criminals.

Do you know that loneliness increases the risk of depression and early death? Indeed, it has been reported to be worse than obesity and may be as dangerous as consuming up to 15 cigarettes daily in predicting early death.

Why do people feel lonely? Many factors contribute to loneliness. Let’s consider 3 common reasons.

One important consideration is your personality. Our personality affects our outlook, attitudes, feelings and ability to cope with challenging situations. For instance, a person may have anxious-avoidant personality traits which may make it difficult for him or her to initiate and maintain friendships despite a strong desire for relationships. For such individuals, more effort will certainly be needed to fight loneliness. In contrast, some persons prefer their privacy to spending time with others. Some popular artists complain of loneliness. Although surrounded by a huge number of fans and having thousands of Facebook followers, many complain of not having that feeling of closeness with others. This clearly shows that though you may experience loneliness when alone, your perception of being alone determines if this will likely occur.

Do you know that one of the downsides of technology is its impact on human relations? Have you ever felt lonely despite sending lots of texts, chats and email? Many people are glued to phones, video games, TV, music players and other time consuming activities that may isolate them from other humans. These gadgets facilitate communication, businesses, meetings and online transactions. Unfortunately, our involvement with these tools significantly reduces time available for social interactions. This may lead to a huge loss in social skills required to initiate conversations and develop friendships.

Another common reason is changing circumstances. This has been shown to worsen feelings of loneliness. Growing old, retirement, ill-health, empty nest syndromes, bereavement, separation are conditions that are associated with loneliness. During these periods, individuals ironically have more time and less capacity to engage in social activities. Some check their phones repeatedly for new calls, texts or emails to disappointingly find that no one had reached out to them all day.

Health / Re: Do You Need Vitamin C Supplements To Prevent Common Colds? by RxH8: 12:21pm On Aug 09, 2017
Does Vitamin C reduce the duration or severity of common colds? No. High doses of Vitamin C taken at the beginning of an episode made no difference on the duration or severity of the condition. This means that the illness will run its course (usually 7-10 days) whether you take Vitamin C or not.

Clearly, more studies are needed to understand how individual factors interact with vitamin C in common colds and similar conditions. In view of this, the authors suggested that while it may be difficult to recommend Vitamin C supplementation to the entire population, you may consider trying if it works for you given the low cost and safety of the drug.

Health / Re: Do You Need Vitamin C Supplements To Prevent Common Colds? by RxH8: 12:17pm On Aug 09, 2017
What does the current evidence reveal? Do you need Vitamin C supplements to prevent common colds? If you decide to take large quantities of Vitamin C during an episode, will it have any impact on the duration or severity of the condition?

These questions were the focus of a systematic review published by Cochrane. The study reported the outcome of 29 randomized controlled trials involving 11,306 participants (out of which 600 participants were athletes). The researchers wanted to know if regular vitamin C intake prevents common colds. They also studied the effect of Vitamin C on the duration and severity of the condition.

What were the major findings of this study?

Does Vitamin C reduce incidence of common colds? Yes, in a limited way. The risk was halved in persons engaged in physical activities or strenuous exercises. Unfortunately, this effect could not be established in other groups of individuals. The implication is that Vitamin C does not protect everyone from having common colds. Consequently, there is no basis for taking Vitamin C supplementation daily in order to prevent it.
Health / Do You Need Vitamin C Supplements To Prevent Common Colds? by RxH8: 12:14pm On Aug 09, 2017
Common colds remain one of the commonest medical problems worldwide. Depending on age, an average individual may have colds 2-10 times a year. Controversies surrounding the use Vitamin C and Common colds are as old as the drug itself. About 85 years ago, Albert Szent-Györgyi discovered ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) contributing significantly to the treatment and partial eradication of scurvy, a major life threatening disease.

Ever since its discovery, millions have been keenly aware of the need to eat fruits and vegetables to meet the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C.

Nevertheless, evidence for regular intake of Vitamin C tablets or syrup to fight common colds is still evolving. In 1970s, Linus Pauling concluded that vitamin C prevents and alleviates common colds. However, this claim has been refuted by other scientific studies.

6. Think positive
Recognize and immediately reject negative thoughts that may creep. Festering pessimism further complicates the condition. So reflect on the positive aspects of your life and others.

7. Maintain a sense of humor
Never take yourself too seriously. Don’t always assume you have to be better than every other person to succeed…it’s a common myth. Be prepared to laugh at your mistakes while learning from them.

8. Physical exercise
Find time for exercises that are heart friendly and would enhance fitness. While going to the gym is often recommended, truth is you may not be able to combine this with your current work schedule. Don’t despair! There are a lot of simple, cost effective exercises that can be done with little or no hassles.

9. Do not procrastinate
Leaving today’s work till tomorrow only increases your workload, making more important tasks urgent. Remember, increasing workload elevates the risk of burnout. So, set reasonable daily targets and stick to them!

10. Communicate
Getting a listening ear is a recognized way of reducing stress. So, actively seek friends, family members and colleagues that will provide the support you need. Furthermore, this supportive ring of communication has been cited as one of the most important coping methods among firefighters. Develop and use it wisely!

Health / Re: 10 Ways Of Overcoming Work Related Stress by RxH8: 2:30pm On Aug 06, 2017
So what is the way out? Follow these 10 steps to deal with burnout:

1. Reconsider your priorities
Ask yourself. What is the single most important thing in your life? What’s next? It’s important that you list all your priorities and arrange them in the right order. Next, determine if your current activities and time are invested in proportion to your priorities.

2.Take charge of your life
Work hard to overcome helplessness. Take charge and accept responsibility for your feelings and behavior. This prevents mounting frustration and resignation into a state of helplessness.

3.Keep it simple
You will need to simplify your lifestyle to reduce stress and secure time for the pursuit of your own priorities. Are you heavily indebted? Then find ways to reduce or eliminate your debt.

4. Be assertive
In order to shed excess work load that may be contributing to the stressful state, you will need to set boundaries. Knowing how to say “NO’ to certain requests is a necessary skill you need to acquire and cultivate. Being assertive will make it easier to say “NO” without offending your bosses or colleagues.

5. Refresh regularly
Like a system that hangs when working in overdrive, we all need to refresh regularly. Recreational opportunities that are refreshing could provide just what is needed to recover the energy, zest and vitality you dearly need. These could include developing new interests and friendships outside work. To expand your social network, can you think of being part of groups with similar interest e.g. book club.
Health / Re: 10 Ways Of Overcoming Work Related Stress by RxH8: 2:27pm On Aug 06, 2017
How do feel during vacation or days off work? Do you become restless or irritable? Do you itch to return to work? That may point to the predominant role work plays in your life. While being passionate about your work is encouraged, inability to set clear boundaries between work and private lives may make you vulnerable. If you experience relief on returning to work after a period of vacation, that could suggest you have what has been termed “holiday neurosis” which occurs when work dominates your life-a prelude to burnout.

Are some professionals more at risk of burnout? Yes. Emotionally demanding and stressful occupations that often involve long hours, large workloads and emotional involvement with people contribute to burnout. These include health care, law enforcement, retail industry, teaching etc. So, doctors, nurses, full-time housewives, police officers, bankers, teachers and other professionals need to be on the lookout for burnout. Are you emotionally sensitive to the needs of others? Are you sympathetic or compassionate? If so, you may be susceptible to burnout.

If it persists, it could have a long lasting negative impact on your happiness, relationships and health.

Health / 10 Ways Of Overcoming Work Related Stress by RxH8: 2:26pm On Aug 06, 2017
James works in a new generation bank. To beat the traffic, he has to leave home by 5.30am daily. He does not get home till 11pm every week day. Despite putting in his best, he consistently failed to meet his monthly targets, attracting queries during performance appraisals. Recently, a major client threatened to close his bank account if his application for a multi-million dollar loan falls through. In the past month, he constantly felt tired and no longer had zest for work. To pace himself, he procrastinated which resulted in missing deadlines and further problems with his bosses. Although, he valued his work-his main source of income- this was not enough to motivate him.

Have you ever had a similar experience? Has your desire for work declined lately? Are you often tired? Do you increasingly avoid work related responsibilities?

If your answer is ‘Yes’ to any of these questions, you may be experiencing a condition called “BURNOUT”. This is defined as a chronic state of emotional and physical exhaustion. Features of burnout include tiredness, fatigue, headache, back pain, muscle ache, changes in appetite or sleep habits. This may be accompanied by loss of motivation, poor sleep, difficulty in concentrating, forgetfulness, low mood, increasing worries and irritability.

Health / Re: Hyperlaction-here Is What A Mother Did With 2,271 Litres Of Breast Milk by RxH8: 11:25am On Aug 06, 2017
What are some of the complications of Hyperlactation?

This condition is often associated with emotional, social and physical problems.

Feelings of frustration and loneliness
Disruption of social and professional activities on account of excessive leaking and breast pain
Inadequate support from family, friends and health workers (who ironically feel that this is great for the child)
Milk stasis
Blocked ducts
Inflammatory or infectious mastitis
Breast abscess
Infant may have watery stools
How is it usually managed?

According to experts, in other to reduce the problems associated with breast mil over supply, there is a need to decrease the rate of breast milk production, improving milk removal out of the breast. Some may require surgical drainage. There may be need to manage breastfeeding better by feeding your baby before he becomes very hungry to encourage gentle sucking. This reduces breast stimulation and flow of milk.

Antibiotic therapy may be necessary if the breast becomes inflamed.

Reducing quantity and increasing quality of breast milk

At the end of the day, maintaining a positive attitude when dealing with difficult health conditions really helps as shown by Elisabeth Anderson-Sierra.

What is Hyperlactation?

This is a rare condition that makes the mother produce milk in excess of of the baby’s needs. It is also known as hypergalactia or breast milk over supply. In effect the mother has too much of a good thing-breast milk- which is often in short supply worldwide. Common causes include hormonal imbalances, tumors, excessive pumping and medications.

How Can you tell if you have Hyperlactation?

Mother observes that milk leaks continually between feedings. She is also able to pump lots of milk after a feeding. Some complain of being awakened at night by painful engorgement despite the baby being satisfied and not yet ready to eat. This painful engorgement may continue for more than 1 to 2 weeks.

Health / Hyperlaction-here Is What A Mother Did With 2,271 Litres Of Breast Milk by RxH8: 11:19am On Aug 06, 2017
A 29-old mother-of-two, Elisabeth from the United States has turned a rare condition into a laudable project. She produces large volumes of breast milk daily on account of a condition called hyperlactation syndrome. According to reports, she produces roughly 1.7 gallons (6.4 litres) -almost 10 times more than most mothers. Rather than bemoan her condition, she took this as an opportunity to help hundreds of premature babies who go without breast milk daily. She has so far donated 2,271 liters of breast milk to families that need them. Ever since falling pregnant with her older daughter, Isabella, who is now two and a half years old, Elisabeth estimates that she has fed thousands of babies with her breast milk. She works full time daily producing and storing breast milk in four large freezers she acquired for the project.

According to Elisabeth in a recent interview “I pump five times a day – as soon as I wake up, after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner and again at midnight. I produce up to 0.625 gallons (2.3 litres)of milk during my first pump alone, in total I will spend around five hours a day just pumping and then with storing, labelling, sterilizing etcetera, I easily spent eight to ten hours. Pumping is not fun – it is uncomfortable and it hurts – but it is my labor of love. It is instant gratification when I donate locally because I see the babies and I see them thriving. It will have helped thousands of children. The milk at the milk bank goes to micro pre-emies, so just 1 fl oz can feed three or four babies,” Elisabeth adds. I don’t discriminate – I have donated to gay couples and to mothers who are on medication or had their breast removed due to breast cancer. It’s an amazing feeling.”

This inspiring story demonstrates how one’s perspective of health problems helps him or her to cope.

Craving and withdrawal from opioids medications which the patient requested for may actually impair the drug abuser’s judgment. In the past few years, the abuse of pain medications have increased remarkably. Tramadol, codeine, pentazocine and morphine are some of the most abused prescription drugs worldwide. Because these pain killers are marketed as safe, it is easy to conclude that continued use poses no problems. That is NOT true. For instance, there have been several reports of deaths or serious health complications such as epilepsy with tramadol use. It is important to know how to identify the signs of addiction and seek appropriate treatment. Doctors may also need to be on guard when managing clients that are potentially violent.

Jarvis became upset after Graham told them that he doesn’t believe chronic pain requires opioid medication. The couple left, but Jarvis — armed with a gun — drove back to the doctor’s office about two hours later,
