Russian President Vladimir Putin has "no way out" of his weeks-long invasion of Ukraine, according to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker. While some foreign policy experts have expressed surprise that Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine has continued into mid-March, Volker says he expected Ukraine to show strong resistance, and Putin has only dug himself into a deeper hole by continuing his war against the sovereign nation without showing any indication of agreeing to a peace deal so far. "Putin who has no way out. He has gone all-in in this military effort to take over Ukraine. And it's failing," Volker, former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations, told Fox News Digital. "So, he's just going to keep doubling down and doubling down on a military victory that is looking increasingly unlikely." Putin is demanding Ukraine demilitarize, recognize Russian control over Crimea and renounce any efforts to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). NATO is an intergovernmental, military-political alliance between the United States, Canada and a number of European countries. NATO was founded after World War II in 1949 in an effort to protect European countries within the alliance against threats from Russia — then the Soviet Union. Ukraine is not part of NATO, which plays no formal role in Russia's war with Ukraine, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksyy has called on alliance officials to implement a no-fly zone over his country to stop Russian missile attacks. Most NATO officials have thus far denied those requests, citing concerns of a third world war against Russia. Volker said he "doesn't see" Ukraine bowing to Putin's demands "at all," with the possible exception of agreeing not to recognize Ukraine as a NATO ally. He does not expect Ukraine to demilitarize but instead strengthen its military and "look for other security guarantees." He added that Ukrainians "feel like time is on their side now." Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is demanding Russia commit to a cease-fire and withdraw their forces from Ukraine, which Volker does not think is likely in the near future but may happen eventually. https://www.foxnews.com/world/putin-failed-ukraine-invasion-former-nato-ambassador |

KEY POINTS #President Joe Biden signed a funding bill to keep the government running through September and send $13.6 billion in aid to Ukraine. #The money for Ukraine will go both to helping refugees fleeing Russia's invasion and to defensive equipment and training for the country's military. #Biden is set to travel to Brussels next month for a summit among NATO leaders. President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed a $1.5 trillion bill that funds federal operations through September and sends billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine as the country fights off a Russian invasion. Washington had to approve a spending plan by the end of the day to prevent a government shutdown. The bill includes $13.6 billion for assistance to Ukraine, which fits into a broader U.S. effort to bolster Ukrainian defense, hamper Russia's economy and support civilians displaced by the war. The money will fund defensive military equipment and training, along with aid for Ukrainian refugees both within the country and in neighboring nations. "We're moving further to augment support to the brave people of Ukraine as they defend their country," Biden said Tuesday before he signed the bill. He added that the U.S. will be "better positioned to provide for the rapidly growing humanitarian need of the Ukrainian people." Biden signed the bill shortly after the White House announced he would travel to Brussels this month for an extraordinary summit about Russia's attack on Ukraine. He also approved the funding hours before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's planned address to the U.S. Congress on Wednesday morning. While the bill includes critical funding for U.S. efforts in Ukraine, it also stamps out some risks in the U.S. for now. The federal government will avoid a shutdown, which can damage the economy and put many federal employees out of work temporarily. The bill provides enough money to cover federal spending through the end of the fiscal year Sept. 30 after Congress passed multiple stopgap plans to keep the lights on in recent months. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/15/biden-signs-government-funding-bill-with-ukraine-aid.html |

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, has revealed how the Federal Government quietly removed the subsidy on electricity tariff. She said the government had to carefully adjust the prices incrementally at some levels. Speaking on Thursday at a virtual meeting of African Finance Ministers and the International Monetary Fund, Ahmed also said the amendment of the budget was ongoing to accommodate the incremental removal of fuel subsidy. The theme of the meeting was ‘The political economy of fiscal reforms’. Ahmed said, “We are cleaning up our subsidies. We had a setback; we were to remove fuel subsidy by July this year but there was a lot of pushback from the polity. We have elections coming and because of the hardship that companies and citizens went through during the COVID-19 pandemic, we just felt that the time was not right, so we pulled back on that. “But we have been able to quietly implement subsidy removal in the electricity sector and as we speak, we don’t have subsidies in the electricity sector. We did that incrementally over time by carefully adjusting the prices at some levels while holding the lower levels down. She said fuel subsidy remained a huge problem for the government as it had thrown up deficits more than what was planned. She noted that the rise in global oil prices would worsen the issue “but the current review that we are doing is to hold the subsidy at the level in which it is planned,” she said. Ahmed added, “We are currently doing a budget amendment to accommodate incremental subsidy (removal) as a result of the reversal of the decision and we want to cap it at that. Hopefully, the parliament will agree with us and we are able to continue with our plan for subsidy (removal) otherwise the way things are going we will not be able to predict where the deficit will be as a result of the fluctuation in the global market.” She stated further that the government was improving tax administration and compliance by adopting technology so as to increase revenue. https://punchng.com/weve-quietly-removed-electricity-subsidy-fuel-subsidy-to-follow-fg/ |

Business)Popular Chinese tech stocks have plunged after the US regulator named five Chinese companies that could be removed from American stock markets for failing to meet audit requirements. The names cited by the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday are fast-food company Yum China Holdings (YUMC), tech firm ACM Research (ACMR), biotech group BeiGene (BGNE), Zai Lab (ZLAB), as well as pharmaceutical company Hutchmed. But big tech stocks also fell because investors are concerned that more companies might be added to the US regulator's list. Alibaba (BABA) fell more than 5% Friday in Hong Kong. Its US-listed stock ended down 7.9% on Thursday. JD.com (JD) plummeted 11% in Hong Kong, after closing 16% lower on Wall Street. Baidu (BIDU) was down nearly 5%, following a 6.3% drop in the United States. Other companies with dual listings in the United States and Hong Kong also declined sharply. The broad losses came as Chinese companies face intense regulatory pressure both at home and in the US. So far this week, the SEC has pointed out five Chinese companies for not adhering to the Holding Foreign Companies Accountability Act (HFCAA). That law gives the SEC power to kick companies off Wall Street if they fail to allow US watchdogs to inspect their financial audits for three straight years. https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/11/business/alibaba-stock-sec-delisting-chinese-companies-intl-hnk/index.html |
