Computers / Safety Tips In ICT by SAFETYCONSULT: 6:20pm On Oct 05, 2021
Safety in ICT (Information and Communications Technology) is mostly about understanding how to work safely with computers and environments with lots of technology equipment.

While our daily online activity continues to grow, so does our exposure to online threats. Multiply this by the sheer amount of devices through which we can access the Internet, and the risk of our personal information falling into the wrong hands increases exponentially.

The tips below will increase your online safety.

Protect your identity: use different user names and passwords for your accounts and make sure your passwords contain a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.
Turn on your firewall: the University uses a firewall to help secure its infrastructure. Having one on your personal computer will help protect it from viruses and malware.
Use anti-virus software: a multitude of free and paid anti-virus software exists to help protect your personal computers, tablets, and smartphones. Install one on each device that connects to the Internet, and remember to update it regularly.
Block spyware attacks: like anti-virus software, anti-spyware software prevents spyware from making its way onto your computer.
Routinely back up your files: remember to back up your files to an external hard drive, removable media, or to the cloud so that you have access to them in the event of a system failure or virus.
Protect your wireless network: password protect your home wireless network and change the password regularly if multiple people access it.
Ignore and delete emails from unknown senders: never open emails or attachments from people you don’t know. Ignore these messages and delete them immediately.
Surf the Web safely: only make online purchases from trusted sources, and make sure your privacy settings are turned on when accessing your social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc…). You don’t want your personal information falling into the wrong hands!
When in doubt, get expert help: consult a computer expert if you need help installing software on your computer, and report any suspicious computing activity (scams, identity theft attempts) to the police.
Update everything and install security software: Windows and Mac OS updates - Schedule and install operating system updates and security patches.

Anti-virus/Anti-malware - Run updates and schedule scans on your computer for commercial products.
Visit the Microsoft Security Center - Download Security Essentials and check for malware with Microsoft’s Safety Scanner
Web browser plug-ins -  Update helper applications, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Flash, and Oracle’s Java
Visit Mozilla, makers of Thunderbird and Firefox, and check your Firefox browser plug-ins.

Stop illegal file-sharing and remove your peer-to-peer (P2P).

It is against the law to share or distribute copyrighted material. Learn how L&C responds to copyright infringement claims.

Set privacy for social networking sites.

Learn how to set the privacy settings so they are as restrictive as possible and protect your reputation. Also, be careful what you post/publish on your social networking sites.

Stay away from untrusted networks or public computers.

Be careful when using free, public wireless networks at hotels, airports, and coffee shops, or public computers. Refrain from doing any sensitive online activities or using any account information and always ensure you log off of public computers.

Turn off your computer when you’re not using it.

Save energy and keep your computer from being accessible from the Internet.

Back up your computer files regularly so you don’t lose important assignments, cherished music, or photos.

Keep backed up files in a safe, secure location away from your computer (or use an online service).

Use caution when using public computers, such as those in hotels or computer labs.

Don’t visit sites that require personal information, such as your bank’s Web site, and be sure to log off when you’re done.

Trust your instincts.

If you feel like something is suspicious, error on the side of caution. If your spidey senses are tingling, trust them.

Properties / Safeguarding The Nation Critical Assets A Case Of The National Art Theatre by SAFETYCONSULT: 12:53pm On Sep 28, 2021
Without mentioning countries, prominent landmarks give glamour and credence to such nations.  This is because the services and systems provided by these critical infrastructures are so intertwined into the fabric of our everyday life and speak well of us as a prosperous country.  Conversely, it is not news to many Nigerians that some of our National monuments are in a shameful state.  This is the pitiful story of one of Nigeria’s cherished assets; the National Art Theatre Lagos

For 43 years, this world-class edifice has been mismanaged, ill-maintained, and severely underutilized. A once hub of social and cultural activities, its fortunes began a slow but steady decline in years of deterioration occasioned by non-maintenance and mismanagement owned to the fact that people saddled with the responsibility of management are truly not good managers in this part of our world. Government after the government found it hard to resuscitate this edifice. That the National Art Theatre needs a transfiguration is an understatement. Sadly in Nigeria, the goose that lays the golden egg is never fed until it goes into extinction. A distinct monument of this caliber should have never been left to rot as it did.

As a concerned corporate safety brand, we understand the need to revamp and protect this important social and cultural edifice.  We are committed to ensuring safety standards towards protecting our cherished assets.  Our crux concern is strict adherence to standards in rebuilding and preserving our unique heritage.  This means it will take great effort by committed, passionate and standards-driven stakeholders to restore its fortunes.

As stakeholders and clients jostle for the renovation work, it is our sincere desire that the principles of standards, proper management, and ethical values be upheld.  We hope to foster interdisciplinary discourse in ensuring that this asset is efficiently brought back to life and fully functional to serve both domestic and global needs according to best standards and practices

Properties / What Led To Prince Ebeano Supermarket Fire In Abuja by SAFETYCONSULT: 5:27pm On Aug 24, 2021
With the evolution of safety and the ever-growing need for safety of operations in the different sectors of the Nigerian economy, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) is working to implement policies to ensure the safety of citizens, assets, and the environment.

The “Prince Ebeano Supermarket” is one of the business enterprises that has a chain of outlets in major cities across Nigeria. It's no longer news that the multi-million-naira Supermarket facility in Lokogoma Abuja was gutted by fire on Saturday the 17th of July 2021.

Fire disasters in Nigeria have always been plagued by the blame game usually attributed to the slow response time or the extended E.T.A of the Fire Service at the scene or the lack of sincere commitment of the AHJ to sustainable development in terms of infrastructure but leave out “Safety is everybody’s business” and the failure of the business owner or organization responsibility to itself and the society at large, a typical example being the unsafe acts and conditions which exposed the utter disregard of life during the “Otedola bridge inferno”.

Those who understand the dynamics of fire safety systems know that every fire disaster in Nigeria always exposes our culture of crude or almost nonexistent preparedness for possible disasters and a critical analysis of the enabling factor for the propagation of the fire hazard will highlight the root cause of the incident in general as the risk entails not only financial or reputational loss to the business owner but a possibility for loss of lives.

Fire safety is a fundamental consideration in building design and management, but unfortunately, one that is often overlooked as concepts like firewalls are today more likely to be associated with IT security than with physical safety. This concept utilizes both passive and active means for fire risk detection and mitigation.

From an engineering perspective, fire risks are avoidable to residual levels or to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) and this is achieved using proper engineering principles benchmarked to several performance criteria to prevent the occurrence of a fire incident or contain and extinguish the incipient fire.

As an employer, you have a legal duty to carry out a fire safety risk assessment and to make sure that your workplace, the people who work there, and the general public are kept safe from fire and its effects. You will also need to make sure that your workplace contains the necessary fire safety precautions (active and passive) and that these are maintained. You should also provide information, instruction, and training to your employees about fire prevention and what to do in the event of a fire.

The fire disaster at the Prince Ebeano supermarket facility could have been controlled had the proper safety measures been taken. This calls to mind the Hierarchy of Controls in their order of efficacy and peculiarity to the subject matter include: Read More HERE

Science/Technology / Training On Cyber Security In NIgeria, Ghana, Togo and Gabon by SAFETYCONSULT: 12:17pm On Aug 13, 2021
ISO/IEC 27032 addresses, defined “Cybersecurity” or “the Cyberspace security” as the “preservation of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information in the Cyberspace”. In turn “Cyberspace” is defined as “the complex environment resulting from the interaction of people, software and services on the Internet by means of technology devices and networks connected to it, which does not exist in any physical form”.

Cybersecurity is becoming a critical issue as most businesses now use computers in their day-to-day operations. The use of computers for the storage of the most sensitive data of most businesses presents its own risk and threat to business continuity. Thus, business owners and employees at large need to be updated on the defensive measures that prevent data breaches and ensuring that the risk of losing data is brought to as low as reasonably practicable.

Health / First Aid At Work Place by SAFETYCONSULT: 10:16am On Aug 13, 2021
Even in the safest workplace, accidents will happen. Knowing the right steps to take will help to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and without making the situation worse. When an accident occurs, whether it’s minor or serious, it should be reported immediately so that proper medical attention can be obtained. Only attempt to give first aid until help arrives. Be prepared to assist in any emergency.

Know the telephone numbers to report an accident including “199, 767”

Then do what you can for the individual or individuals who are hurt.
Minor cuts and scratches:

Clean and cover to prevent contamination Foreign particles in the eye:
Never rub the eye to remove a particle
Lift the upper eyelid and pull it outward and down over the lower eyelid to induce tears, which can wash out small particles
If the particle is floating on the surface of the eyeball or under the eyelid, you can try to remove it with the corner of a clean piece of cloth.
Never try to remove an object embedded in the eye; have the victim lie flat, cover both eyes with sterile pads and bandage until medical help arrives. Try to minimize movement as that could make it go deeper.

Severe Bleeding:

Try to stop the bleeding if possible
Have the victim lie down and apply pressure on the wound with a sterile pad or the cleanest piece of cloth you can find
If the cloth becomes saturated with blood – keep adding more pads – do not remove any of them
If the wound is on an arm or leg, you can raise the wounded part above the heart
Continue to apply direct pressure
NEVER use a tourniquet unless you’re willing to lose a limb to save a life. Also, NEVER remove a tourniquet once it is applied.

Broken Bones

Unless the person is in danger, don’t move them until the broken bones are stabilized by splints. Splinting should be done by a professional
If the accident could have caused broken bones, again, don’t move the victim unless there is a danger, until a medical professional can assess the damage and direct the application of any splints that may be needed

Chemical Exposure:
If splashed with a chemical, the best treatment is to flush the areas that came into contact with the chemical with water for 15 minutes
This includes chemicals that may have been splashed into the eyes. You may need to hold the eyelids open gently to make sure they are properly rinsed.
After 15 minutes of flushing, seek medical attention immediately.

Shock: It is not unusual for someone to also be in shock

Are they weak and confused?
Is their skin pale, cold, and clammy?
Do they feel nauseated, or like they are going to faint?
Do their eyes appear vacant with dilated pupils?

If they have any of these symptoms:

Technology Market / What Are The Different Roles Within Cybersecurity by SAFETYCONSULT: 2:51pm On Aug 12, 2021
People talk about the cybersecurity job market like it's a monolith, but there are a number of different roles within cybersecurity, depending not only on your skill level and experience but on what you like to do.

In fact, Cybercrime Magazine came up with a list of 50 cybersecurity job titles, while CyberSN, a recruiting organization, came up with its own list of 45 cybersecurity job categories.

Similarly, OnGig.com, a company that helps firms write their job ads, analyzed 150 cybersecurity job titles and came up with its own top 30 list. This article is based on research I did with Springboard, one of the first cybersecurity boot camps with a job guarantee and 1:1 mentorship.

In particular, CyberSeek.org, a joint industry initiative looking at the cybersecurity job market, offers an interactive list of not only the various positions within cybersecurity but offers you a career path showing how you can get promoted.

The complicated part is that these titles and roles generally aren't standardized, plus they constantly change as the industry itself evolves. The National Institute for Science and Technology, in its National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education workforce framework, does try to standardize positions using the notions of:

Tasks (the action the person performs)

Knowledge (the concepts the person has to know)

Skills (the capability of performing an action)

Organizations can use these concepts to create roles and teams to perform the tasks they need.

Something else to keep in mind: Human resources departments may not understand the cybersecurity job market or how to hire people in that field, according to the 2020 SOC Skills Survey from Cyberbit.

There are a few distinctions we have to draw here. Cybersecurity job roles are differentiated by the level of experience required, but also whether or not you're red-team (offensive) or blue-team (defensive). Offensive roles (like penetration testers) will typically require more experience as you build your understanding of the defensive practice.

So what are some of the most common cybersecurity job roles, and how are they different from each other? Some more entry-level positions, typically requiring a certification such as a CompTIA Security+, include:

Cybersecurity Analyst: The cybersecurity analyst is responsible for protecting both company networks and data. In addition to managing all ongoing security measures, the analyst is also responsible for responding to security breaches and protecting company hardware, such as employee computers.

Security Engineer: Security engineers are tasked with planning and executing a company's information security strategy and maintaining all security solutions. They can also be responsible for documenting the security posture of their company and any issues or measures taken under their watch. Security engineers tend to be more defensive than their analyst peers. Read more here

Properties / A Look At Operational Risk Management And Risk Underwiting by SAFETYCONSULT: 3:27pm On Jul 19, 2021
A thorough and thoughtful risk management plan is the commitment to prevent harm and is a pre-loss exercise. Insurance comes post-loss and pays for the damages if the risk were to occur. Residual risks are the inherent risks that remain after the implementation of the risk management plan. It is the basis of risk underwriting.

There are essentially FIVE (5) basic risk management principles: identification, analysis, control, financing, and claims management with objectives similar for industry, private, and government sectors. These areas are summarized below:

Reduce and Eliminate Harmful Threats.
Supports Efficient use of Resources.
Better Communication of Risk within Organization.
Reassures Stakeholders.
Support Continuity of Organization.

Governments, Financiers, and Insurance Companies have adopted performance benchmarks for risk management and underwriting especially were about the protection of Life, Environment, and Assets. These are guided by codes and standards relevant in different jurisdictions. Common codes and standards include BS, ASME, IEC, OSHAS, API, NFPA, ISO, IBC, etc.

Operational Risk Management for Safety and Security is a multidisciplinary service encompassing Life & Fire Safety Environmental & HSE-MS, Technical & Process Safety consulting, and contracting. Risk management is best embedded in the concept phase of any project by the Architects and Project Managers. They work with qualified specialists to ensure passive and active risk management philosophies that guide the deployed strategies in other phases.

This approach negates project cost variation while ensuring User and Legal Requirements by the Authority Having Jurisdiction are met in the facility design, construction, and operations. With these risks is brought to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP), the residual risks are transferred to third parties. Insurance companies underwrite the residual risk. The gains in adopting a sound risk management plan pay for themselves in reduced premium over time. Other benefits include compliance, reputation, and business continuity. This case is too often missed by Project Managers.

With over 13 years serving the African region in this niche service, we at Safety Consultants and Solution Providers encourage Architects, Financiers, Project Managers, Insurance and Owners conscious especially this critical requirement especially if these scenarios apply

Properties / Structural Integrity Consideration Against Collapse In Case Of Fire by SAFETYCONSULT: 1:06pm On Jun 30, 2021
There is general agreement that the goals of structural design against fire are to limit risks to the individual and society, to directly exposed or neighboring property, and to the environment. To meet these goals, fire protection requirements use the prescriptive format, e.g., they specify the permissible materials for buildings, the thickness of insulation, or the minimum acceptable spacing between buildings. This is the traditional approach that continues to this day. In the early 1970s, performance-based approaches were developed, following an evolution in the understanding of fire and building performance in fire. Performance-based methods allow the designers to account for the unique features and uses of buildings and promote a better understanding of how buildings perform in fire. Compared to prescriptive methods, performance-based approaches have a greater potential to promote innovation and cost savings, but require more expertise.

Prescriptive Design

Traditionally, building codes have specified prescriptive methods to improve fire safety in buildings.

These methods use:

- fixed values, such as maximum travel distance, minimum fire resistance ratings and minimum features of required systems, such as detection, alarm, suppression and ventilation;

- Safety factors, typically historically based, used to account for uncertainties inherent in the data, and to achieve the desired excess capacity;

- Exposure to a standard fire, such as ASTM E119 (2012) or ISO 834 (2002). The standards that focus on fire exposure (time-temperature curves) and fire scenarios, such as NFPA 5000.

Most prescriptive codes include an equivalency clause that allows the use of performance-based methods to satisfy the intent of the code. Fire resistance rating is determined in compliance with the test procedures set forth in ASTM E119 or UL 263. Specified in ASTM E119 or UL 263 should be used (Sections 703.2 and 703.3 of IBC 2012). The test specimen is deemed acceptable if it can sustain the applied load during the fire resistance test without passage of flame or gases hot enough to ignite cotton waste for a period equal to that for which classification is desired. For walls or partitions, and restrained or unrestrained beams and floor and roof assemblies, transmission of heat should not raise the temperature on the unexposed surface more than 250℉ (139℃) above its initial temperature. The IBC references other standards, such as those of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Concrete Institute International (ACI), The Masonry Society (TMS), the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). Other prescriptive standards used in the US include ACI 216.1-07/ TMS 0216-07 Code requirements for determining fire resistance of concrete and masonry assemblies, and PCI 3rd ed. 2011 Design for fire resistance of precast/prestressed concrete. ASCE/SEI/SPFE 29-05 Standard Calculation Methods for Structural Fire Protection show how to calculate the equivalent fire resistance, in terms of hours, of concrete, timber, masonry and steel members, that would be achieved under the standard ASTM E119 fire test.

General principles

External walls and roofs must be constructed to avoid vertical and horizontal fire spread. The necessary protection may be achieved by one or more of:
