If you make a big deal out of it then he’ll probably get anxious and need to do it more to comfort himself. People grow out of these self soothing methods. I use to chew my hair, and my sleeves when I was younger. I use to get in soo much trouble for chewing my the sleeves because I made holes in my tops but that didn’t stop me.
