He never thought that destroying the PDP will eventually lead to his irrelevance, he was calculating that if PDP goes down and APC goes up he will have a firm grip on the President, but he miscalculated with the declining of the PDP and more defection to the APC.
His relevance in the near future may come if PDP bounce back from it's current decline. That can only happen if he decides to support the PDP of which is too late as the decline of the PDP is irreversible.
