EducationUnilorin VC: 9,000 Students To Be Admitted In 2014/15 Admission by SaintRobs(op): 11:13am On Jul 08, 2014
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali,
Hammed Shittu
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, has hinted that the university will be able to admit only 9,000 out of over 100,000 admission seekers that applied to study in the university in the ongoing 2014/2015 admission exercise.
Ambali dropped the hint in Ilorin yesterday during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), to establish a sugarcane bio-factory in the University.
He said the University is rapidly expanding to be able to accommodate more students in the future.
Ambali added,”the University of Ilorin has been able to carve a niche for itself through the commitment of its staff members that had been assisting the institution to provide a qualitative academic environment for its students.
Ambali also assured the NSDC Executive Secretary, Dr. Latif Busari, that the University has everything it takes to make the project a huge success.
He noted that the time had come to take advantage of technology in ensuring food security in the country.
Speaking earlier at the MoU signing ceremony in the university, the NSDC Executive Secretary explained that when completed, the bio-factory would provide high-yielding, disease-resistant sugarcane seedlings for the use of sugarcane factory estates and out-grower farmers across the country.
Busari said the seedlings would be mass produced through the tissue culture in-vitro multiplication process. The Executive Secretary further stated that the seedlings production would be need-driven, thereby eliminating wastage. In addition, he said the council will leverage on the competence of the University of Ilorin to ensure the success of the project.
Busari also disclosed that the NSDC would be seeking greater collaboration with the University of Ilorin because of its track record of academic excellence, research output and stable academic calendar.
The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) was established by Decree 88 of 1993 to, among other things, promote the development of the sugar sub-sector through the provision of guidance on the development of sugar estates and the organisation of sugarcane out-growers schemes to enhance local production of sugar with a view to ensuring that Nigeria achieves at least 70 percent self-sufficiency in sugar requirements as soon as possible.

EducationHistory Of Corruption In Nigeria! by SaintRobs(op): 8:43am On Dec 29, 2013
corruptisima re publica plurimae leges
In the most corrupt state are the most laws (Terence).

History Of Corruption In Nigeria
1. 1960 - 1966: Sir Abubakar Tafawa -Balewa's
tenure, no
public funds stolen
2. 1966: Major - General Aguiyi Ironsi's. brief tenure,
no public funds stolen
3. 1966 - 1975: General Yakubu Gowon's tenure,
very little
corruption creeping in
4. 1975 - 1976: General Murtala Ramat Muhammed's
tenure, zero tolerance for corruption and indiscipline
5. 1976 - 1979: General Olusegun Aremu Matthew
Okikiola
Obasanjo's tenure, rulers
started owning large properties running into
millions of dollars
6. 1979 - 1983: President Shehu Shagari's tenure,
characterised by weak leadership.
Ministers and other top functionaries had a field day
looting
all the lootable public funds and properties even though the
President himself was not stealing any dime!
7. 1984 - 1985: Major - General Muhammadu
Buhari's
tenure, zero tolerance for corruption, indolence and
indiscipline. Corrupt politicians were jailed a minimum of
200 years in prison each!
8. 1985 - 1993: General Ibrahim Badamasi
Babangida's
tenure, freed all the corrupt
politicians jailed by General Buhari. These same freed
politicians are majorly the same set of politicians
ruining
Nigeria now. During Babangida's tenure public
funds were
being carted away by public servants like confetti. In one
swoop about 12 billion dollars mysteriously
vanished!
9. 1993 - 1998: General Sani Abacha's tenure, five
billion
dollars stolen in his five years tenure 10. 1998 - 1999: General Abdulsalami Abubakar's
11
months tenure, about 2 billion dollars were alleged
to have
been stolen. Anyway the man is among the
wealthiest people in the country today!
11. 1999 - 2007: President Olusegun Matthew
Aremu
Okikiola Obasanjo's second tenure, his bank
account grew
from twenty thousand naira after emerging from prison to
being a multi-billionaire with choice properties in
Nigeria
and major cities of the world. Public infrastructure
declined
massively and gangsterism became the order of the day by his party, the PDP. Corruption prospered
massively in his tenure! In one
swoop 16 billion dollars just vanished, allegedly for
electric
power projects but darkness was supplied and is
still being supplied in large quantity! In another mysterious
disappearance the sum of 300 billion naira )2 billion
dollars( meant for road projects also vanished into
thin air!
12. 2007 - 2010: Late President Yar'adua's tenure, a
quiet reserved and the messiah
that not live long to be! The noiseless tenure. But
due to
perpetual ill-health was unable to tame corruption
which is
the character and perfume of his party men and women in
the PDP. Had a slightly large family but he never
allowed
public funds to
be spent on feeding the first family!
13. 2010 - Present: President Nnamdi Azikiwe Ebele Goodluck Jonathan's tenure, full of noise but empty
of
substance. Spends about a billion naira per year for
food for
himself, wife and two kids. In the 2011 election year
about 2.6 trillion naira just disappeared from the public till,
which
is the highest disappearance of public funds per
year in the
country's history! Intolerant of criticisms. Suffers
acute inferiority complex and seems to dislike any war
against
corruption.ALSO,Blaming insurgency and violence on opposition instead of tackling the issues bravely like Yaradua, lootingevery where? Armourd cars scandal, keepingdeaf ears to corruption charges etc... A former Education Minister and Vice
President
of the World Bank, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili accused his
government and that of his immediate predecessor of not accounting for
about 67
billion dollars! Since then
his government has been responding in the manner
of a
headless chicken. They are busy insulting the woman instead of stating in facts
and
figures what they did with the money. In fact, the
SUNDAY
PUNCH newspaper of 25/11/2012 pointedly said
about 31 billion dollars were stolen since his government
came to
being on May 6, 2010. His government looks
promising to
hold the medal for the most corrupt in the world... NIGERIANS.. ARE WE GOING TO STAND UP AND SAVE OUR COUNTRY FRM DA HANDS OF DEMONS CALLED LEADERS OR KEEP FIGHTING OURSELVES ON RELIGIOUS AND ETHNIC GROUNDS WHILE OUR SO-CALLED LEADERS SMILE TO THE BANKhuh?? THE CHOICE IS YOURS

EducationRe: Finally FG Shifted Ground For ASUU! by SaintRobs(op): 7:21pm On Dec 03, 2013
We have met ASUU demand –FG THE presidency Tuesday said that the Federal Government has met with demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and there was no need to maintain the strike, just as it stressed that the agreement was reached sequel to the last meeting held between Federal Government and ASUU.
According to the Presidency, the administration believes that with the agreement and the result of the votes across the campuses, ASUU has no reason for further sustenance of the strike, even as it called on the Union to comply with the call on them to resume work without further delay.
This is coming as the ultimatum issued to ASUU lapses today.
Speaking in Abuja during an interactive session with leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Students’ Matters, Comrade Jude Imagwe who noted that a larger membership of ASUU campus chapters had voted for the immediate call-off of the strike, stressed that the directive given by the government was not targeted to threaten the ASUU leadership, but designed to show government’s commitment towards ensuring that all university students return to school.
According to him, ASUU leaders must work in line with the directives by ensuring that all students get back to the campus as the government would ensure a water-tight security on the campuses, adding, “The Nigerian public should be informed that the government has met all the promises they made on this ASUU issue. If they have not agreed, there was no reason for them to have said they would meet their members and get back . It means there was an agreement that was reached.
“The Minister of Education announced that lecturers should resume, it was not in anyway targeted at threatening or compelling the leadership of ASUU to go back to school.”
In his remarks, NANS president, Comrade Yinka who maintained tha its association was neutral, said that it supports a just cause, adding that the association was standing by the government because it was working in line with its desire which was for all schools to reopen.

Kachi188: www.channelstv.com/home/2013/12/03/ASUU-strike-fresh-demands-do-not-make-sense-okupe/

Senior Special Assistant to President
Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs,
Dr Doyin Okupe, has stated that
there is no reason for the ongoing
industrial action by Nigerian university
lecturers to continue.
He was guest on Channels Television
flagship breakfast programme, ‘Sunrise
Daily’ to discuss the issues.
Okupe said that from the Government’s
perspective, everything that needs to be
done has been done and whether the
strike would be called off or not now lies
in the hands of the leadership of ASUU.
He said that most of the demands of the
Academic Staff Union of Nigerian
Universities, ASUU, have been agreed
upon at the 13-hour meeting they had
with the President in October.
“At the end of that meeting, the
Government proposed that everything
that has been agreed should be put in a
memorandum of agreement and that the
two parties should sign, but the
leadership of ASUU declined and said
instead of that, they would rather have
a letter of comfort expressing
everything that has been resolved
therein, and that will suffice for them.”
According to him, the Government
agreed to their request and issued the
said letter based on the agreement that
the strike would be called off within 7
days. However, this did not happen “in
spite of the fact that the ASUU
leadership presented the letter of
comfort to its chapters nationwide and a
clear majority of them endorsed the
resolutions reached and actually were
more inclined towards calling off the
strike.”
Dr Okupe stressed that the attitude of
the ASUU leadership showed that the
seed of discord and evidence of bad
faith already existed. “It is unfortunate
that somebody died but
notwithstanding, that cannot be a
justification for delaying the
implementation of an agreement for 21
or more days.
Reading from the ‘Letter of Comfort’
issued by the Federal Government in
agreement with the leadership of ASUU,
the government agreed that Nigerian
universities must be revitalized for
effective service delivery, all the
provisions in the agreement and MoU for
the revitalization shall be fully
implemented as captured in the 2012
Needs Assessment and the Federal
Government shall mobilize resource
towards this goal.
“Based on this, it was also agreed that a
sum of N1.3 trillion shall be made
available to ASUU over the next 6 years
starting from December 2013 with (the
sum of) N200 billion. The FGN therefore
request that the ASUU shall within 7
days call off its 4 month strike.”
Contrary to the Federal Government’s
expectation that ASUU would call off
the strike, ASUU in another document
said that they “could not call off the
strike because of certain uncertainties
or gaps that are evident in the
government’s report.”
Okupe asked fiercely, “what are these
uncertainties? He accused ASUU of
turning around to again state four new
conditions for the strike to be called
off. They demanded that the agreed
N200 billion should be deposited in an
account at the Central Bank within 2
weeks, while the negotiation of the 2009
agreement should be included in the
final document.
The ASUU, according to Okupe also
demanded that a non-victimization
clause should be included as well as a
new MoU signed by the Attorney-
General.
Dismissing their requests, he said a
demand for a memorandum is a waste of
people’s time because this is ideally what
should follow any agreement made
between two parties in the first place,
and that by International Labour Laws
which Nigeria is guided by, no one is
expected to be victimized for going on
strike.
He also said that ASUU, asking that the
MoU with Federal Government should be
signed by the Attorney-General “does
not make sense” because anyone of high
standing in Government can sign for it.
He added that an account has already
been opened for the N200 billion they
are requesting for in the Central Bank.
Okupe added that the government has
shown commitment by meeting with the
leadership of ASUU, and agreeing to its
demands, considering that previous
governments did not give them such an
opportunity to sit down and discuss. He
called on ASUU to do the right thing for
the benefit of the nation.
“The Government cannot be seen to be
contesting with any sector of the
economy or the country. This President
is interested in moving Nigeria forward
through a very well-articulated
transformation agenda.”
Really appreciates ur contributions....thanks a lot!
