Former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter recorded his fifth loss in his career on Saturday as he fell to a ninth round knockout in the hands of unbeaten Robert Helinius in Germany.

The fight was for both vacant WBA and WBO Intercontinental belts.

The victory was regarded as the biggest for Helinius who is looking to challenge British David Haye for the WBA heavyweight title.

The much taller Helinius mostly worked behind his jab, showing Peter a lot of respect early. Peter, who at 259.9 pounds was at the second highest fight weight of his career, was mostly the aggressor.

Peter nearly put Helinius out of the game in the second round but he was unable to coordinate his attack due to the Finn’s crisp jabs.

Helinius took away Peter’s potential effectiveness on the inside by clinching whenever the action moved in close and after the midway point, Peter was looking weary.

In the ninth round, Peter walked into a short left hook he never saw coming and fell hard on the canvas.

PoliticsUn Approves No-fly Zone Over Libya by SAKUR(op): 12:00am On Mar 18, 2011
UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. Security Council on Thursday approved a no-fly zone over Libya and authorized "all necessary measures" to protect civilians from attacks by Moammar Gadhafi's forces.

The action came as the Libyan leader was poised to make a final push against rebels holding out in Bengazhi, Libya's second largest city.

The vote in the 15-member council was 10-0 with five abstentions, including Russia and China.

The United States, France and Britain had pushed for speedy approval.

French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said if the resolution was approved, France would support military action against Gadhafi within hours. The U.S. said it was preparing for action. Several Arab nations were expected to provide backup.

Gadhafi vowed to launch a final assault on Benghazi and crush the rebellion as his forces advanced toward the city and warplanes bombed its airport Thursday.

Gadhafi said in an interview broadcast Thursday on Portuguese public broadcaster Radiotelevisao Portuguesa that he rejected any U.N. threats of action.

"The U.N. Security Council has no mandate," Gadhafi said. "We don't acknowledge their resolutions."

He warned that any military action would be construed as "colonization without any justification" and would have "grave repercussions."

The text of the resolution calls on nations to "establish a ban on all flights in the airspace of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya in order to help protect civilians."

It also authorizes U.N. member states to take "all necessary measures , to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, including Benghazi, while excluding a foreign occupation force of any form on any part of Libyan territory."

PoliticsEngineer Launches Rocket In Kaduna by SAKUR(op): 10:23pm On Mar 02, 2011
A 28-year-old graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna, Shehu Saleh Balami has launched a solid-fuel rocket in Kaduna.
Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday in Kaduna, Balami said he took interest in rockets when he was a kid.

He said he was able to invent the solid-fuel rocket with support from friends under the aegis of Movement for the Propagation of Science and Technology in Nigeria, adding that he has also started research on how to make a remote controlled aircraft, a project he intends to embark on shortly.

According to him, he produced the two rockets with 100 per cent local content at an approximate cost of N30, 000 each.

He lamented that Nigeria after 50 years of independence still relies on advanced countries for satellite due to lack of conducive atmosphere for indigenous talented inventors to strive. Balami said there was a need for the Federal Government to provide an enabling environment for science and technology inventors in the country if it wishes to attain the desired Vision 20:2020.

“If the government pays attention to local science and technology inventors and support them financially, I believe very strongly that one day, we will be able to build our own satellite or the engine that will take the satellite into space,” he said.

Politics: Man Dies After Setting Himself On Fire In Senegal by SAKUR(op): 10:28pm On Feb 18, 2011
DAKAR, Senegal – A man who set himself on fire in front of the presidential palace in Senegal on Friday died from his wounds hours later in the latest self-immolation on the African continent.

Witnesses said the man stood on the sidewalk and doused himself with a flammable liquid, possibly paint thinner or gasoline. It was not immediately clear why he set himself alight, but Abdoulaye Loum, who was at a bus stop nearby when the incident occurred, said the man was holding a piece of paper in his hand which he held up as the flames swallowed him.

The man collapsed to the ground and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. A statement read on state TV late Friday said he died at the capital's main hospital.

A private radio station said the man was a soldier and that he was wearing his military fatigues when he set himself on fire.

This self-immolation comes on the heels of similar protests in Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria and Senegal's neighbor to the north, Mauritania.

Tunisia's mutiny that ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was touched off by a struggling 26-year-old university graduate who lit himself on fire after police confiscated his fruit and vegetable cart in December. Other self-immolations then quickly spread elsewhere in northern Africa and the Middle East.

Senegal is a moderate Muslim nation with one of the most established democracies in the region, but the country is facing its worst power outages in a decade and the cost of living has spiraled. There is growing discontent over octogenarian President Abdoulaye Wade's attempt to run for a third term, as well as the increasing influence of his son.

A U.S. diplomatic cable published by WikiLeaks warned that father and son appeared to be "preparing the way for a presidential dynastic succession."

An hour after the incident, traffic had gone back to normal. Pieces of the man's burnt clothing lay in a charred circle.

PoliticsU-turn: I’ll Work For Jonathan –kanti-bello by SAKUR(op): 3:12am On Feb 13, 2011
President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid to win the April Presidential election received a major boost at the weekend with the fiery Senate Majority Whip, Mahmud Kanti-Bello pledging to work for his victory.

The vocal senator who was one of the northerners opposed to President Jonathan’s ambition said he would work for the victory of the PDP flag bearer because he is “a good party man”.

But he slammed the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) for ‘messing up’ the chances of the North to retain the Presidency just as he dismissed the agitation by the South East to produce the next President in 2015, saying “in 2015, it will be free for all. Anybody from anywhere can go for it because we have said bye bye to zoning in 2011.”

In an interview with Sunday Sun, the senator representing Katsina North explained, “my opposition against Jonathan is nothing personal. It is based on principle. I see President Jonathan as a good man but my stand is he was part of an agreement that retained zoning in the PDP and he cannot now turn back to ditch the arrangement. It is based on morality that I made my position and I know that people understand me. That was my grouse, not because I am a tribalist.”

He however added, “Since my party has handed him the ticket, I cannot go against the wish of the party, I will work for PDP victory no matter what.” The Deputy Director General of IBB campaign Organisation, further slammed the NPLF led by former Finance Minister, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, for “messing up the agitation of the North to retain the Presidency in the zone for the next four years.”

According to him, “the choice of the NPLF as the consensus candidate was faulty ab initio. I have nothing against Atiku Abubakar. We’ve been members of the same political family for a long time and we share so many things in common. But his choice was wrong. He left the party and came back and we all knew that anyone coming back must be given a waiver. As at the time he was being named a consensus candidate, the party just gave him the waiver.

“But the issue is this, will you give a person you know will give you problem a waiver to come and slug it out with you? The answer obviously is no. Jonathan gave Atiku the waiver because they know he was not a threat and should he be picked they will have an easy ride. Unfortunately, the NPLF overlooked all those and picked him and the rest is now history.

“The agitation for a northern candidate fell flat the moment they picked Atiku. He didn’t enjoy the support of so many members of the party and it showed in the results. Apart from the manipulation, many people didn’t find it funny voting for him. I bet if it were to be that IBB was picked, the story won’t be what we are saying today.
“But my grouse is the NPLF messed all of us up. They were blowing hot before the primaries and now that Atiku failed, what is the backup plan they have? They are now very quiet and I find that strange. I would have thought they will have a backup plan in the event that Atiku failed to pick the ticket,” Kanti-Bello noted.

The senator, who expressed doubt over the pledge by the President not to contest the 2015 election said, “I doubt so much that promise; If you look the other way in the matter that you and others willingly signed, what will you do in a matter that you made a promise in far away Ethiopia ? But the onus is on us to ensure that we assist him to abide by his promise. We must assist him going by 2015.”

He also dismissed the agitation by Ndigbo to produce the next President in 2015. According to him, “in 2015, it will be free for all. Anybody from anywhere can go for it because we have said bye, bye to zoning in 2011. I don’t know what is wrong with Nigerians; you can’t blow hot and blow cold at the same time. If zoning is bad in 2011, it cannot be good in 2015.”

PoliticsInec, Pdp Bow To Obasanjo by SAKUR(op): 1:47am On Feb 02, 2011
The troubleshooting efforts of former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid off yesterday as the Peoples Democratic Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission replaced the list submitted by the Joju Fadairo-led faction of the Ogun State PDP with the one submitted by a faction favoured by the former President.

Obasanjo, who met with the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Haliru Mohammed, in Abuja on Tuesday over the list, supports the faction led by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Chief Jubril Martins-Kuye.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Campaign office of the party, popularly called Legacy House, Maitama, was held behind closed doors. THE PUNCH gathered that the meeting was not held at the party’s headquarters located at Zone 5 because the participants did not want their discussions to leak.

A source at the meeting told THE PUNCH that Obasanjo came for the meeting because of reports that the list of candidates from the Fadiro-led faction had been forwarded to INEC by the national leadership of the PDP.

Based on the reports, the former President was said to have sought an explanation from the party on why an order of an Abuja court was disobeyed.

A Federal High Court had last week in Abuja restrained INEC and the PDP from accepting the list of candidates from the Fadairo faction, which is supported by the state Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

Our correspondents learnt it was during the meeting, Mohammed informed Obasanjo that INEC had accepted the list of candidates from the primaries conducted by the Martins-Kuye faction.

The accepted list has Gen. Adetunji Olurin (retd.) as the party’s governorship candidate, and the former President’s daughter, Mrs Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, as the candidate for Ogun Senatorial District.

The other senatorial candidates produced by the Martins-Kuye faction are Chief Babatunde Fadun and Mr. Adetunji Odunowo.

The Daniel faction had produced Mr. Gboyega Isiaka as its governorship candidate and the oldest daughter of the winner of the June 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola, Mrs. Lola Abiola- Edewor as the candidate for Ogun Senatorial District.

Daniel and Chief Lai Taiwo clinched the senatorial tickets for Ogun East and Ogun West senatorial districts respectively.

Their names had been forwarded by the PDP to the INEC headquarters on Monday before the sudden U-turn was made public on Tuesday.

Obasanjo, who looked happy after the meeting with the PDP leadership, refused to speak with the journalists, who accosted him.

Also, Mohammed refused to speak on the visit by Obasanjo as he went into a meeting with other members of National Working Committee of the party.

A member of the NWC, who spoke with one of our correspondents on the condition of anonymity, said that the party was not happy with the way INEC handled some of the lists of candidates submitted to it.

After Obasanjo left the Presidential campaign office, INEC Director of Information, Mr. Emmanuel Umenger, said that the commission accepted the list because of the FHC order.

Umenger, in a brief interview with one of our correspondents said, “There is a court order compelling INEC to recognise the faction other than that of Daniel. In the interim, we have to obey the court order; if there is an appeal and a judgment follows, we will obey it.

“For now, there is a court order and INEC as a law abiding institution will obey the order of the court.”

Olurin also confirmed that the electoral body had accepted the list containing his name.

“I have been declared the authentic candidate of the PDP and INEC has confirmed that,” he said.

But Isiaka faulted the claims made by Olurin, describing it as false.

His Personal Assistant on Media, Mr. Bolaji Adeniji, who spoke for him, said, “It is a lie. Isiaka submitted his form in company with a national officer of the PDP and there is no way the INEC can issue certificates to the two of them.”

Abiola-Edewor also faulted Olurin’s claims.

She said, “Isiaka, myself and others have been given the necessary forms and listed as candidates by INEC and it is not possible for INEC to list more than a candidate for a party for the same position.

“What I know is I have collected the forms and others in my group have done the same and INEC had listed us as candidates.”

Investigations revealed that the PDP leadership went back Monday night to produce the list of Martins-Kuye’ faction when the commission cited the court order restraining it from accepting the list from Daniel’s faction.

The confusion over the primaries had worsened last week when both factions claimed that the party headquarters had given them INEC forms to fill.

A source in INEC also said the commission was reconsidering its earlier decision on the list of candidates from Oyo State.

Before the source spoke, the Oyo State chapter of the PDP and the Special Adviser on Public Communications to Alao-Akala , Mr. Dotun Oyelade, had said that governor’s ambition to retain his post was still on course.

Their reactions were sequel to media reports that the PDP might not field candidates in the state during April elections because INEC had rejected the list of candidates from the state.

The list of candidates from the state was reportedly rejected because the state chapter of the party did not complete its congresses.

A statement on Tuesday by the Director of Media and Strategy, Oyo State chapter of the PDP, Dr. Morohunkola Thomas, said the reports were untrue.

He noted that the Oyo PDP list was among the first batch forwarded to INEC by the PDP national headquarters and that INEC had acknowledged receipts of all Oyo PDP candidates, including Alao- Akala.

“Alao-Akala’s governorship election project is absolutely on course and no amount of wuru wuru will derail it,” he added.

Also, Oyelade, said that the media reports were “a continuation of the serial desperation of the opponents to plant confusion when they could not succeed through legitimate means.”

“The candidature of Governor Alao-Akala is unassailable and cannot be taken away by mere wishful thinking,” he said.

TravelFg Waives Visas For Nationals Of Kenya, Seychelles by SAKUR(op): 1:45am On Feb 02, 2011
The Federal Government has relaxed visa requirements for citizens of Kenya and Seychelles with effect from February 11, 2011 following a directive from President Goodluck Jonathan.

Visitors from the two countries will from that date only be required to pay a visa fee of $25 at the point of entry, rather than go through the hassles of visa application at the Nigerian High Commission in Nairobi as was the case currently.

But for the nationals of Seychelles, their valid passport admits them directly into Nigeria without any recourse to visa fees.

This was the outcome of a meeting between the Minister of Interior, Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho (retd.) and the ministers of foreign affairs and aviation in Abuja on Tuesday.

Ihenacho said that as soon as all protocols were completed by the Ministry of Aviation, the Kenyan Airways would be granted permission to new frequencies at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja where it could operate direct flights to and from Kenya to ease logistic problems of travelers who wish to originate and terminate their flights in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs , Mrs. Salamatu Suleiman, the Federal Government took the decision to reciprocate the diplomatic gesture extended to her by the governments of the two countries which have been in place since May 2009.

In his remark, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Kenya and Seychelles, Dr. Chijioke Wigwe, described the policy as a new beginning that would improve the existing relationship between Nigeria and the two countries.

“I believe other African nations will take a cue from this relationship and explore such diplomatic options that will bring about unity in the continent,” he said

PoliticsHarold Smith On Colonial Britain’s Hidden Agenda In Nigeria by SAKUR(op): 3:44am On Jan 31, 2011
The man Harold Smith is not new in Nigerian history. He is one of the architects of the colonial foundation that led to Nigeria’s independence in 1960. I met him in a meeting three weeks ago where he opened up a bit on lingering problems in Africa, especially Nigeria’s unbalanced so-political relationship. We asked if he could make this known to the media. His response was “I am in my 80s now; I have agreed. In the past ‘they’ did not want me to say anything, but now I don’t want to go to my grave without telling the truth about the atrocities perpetrated in Africa by the colonialists.

On a Ben TV programme last Thursday, Harold Smith spoke about what went on behind the scene before independence. The Oxford University graduate had this to say about his role in Nigeria’s pre- and post-independence era. “Our agenda was to completely exploit Africa.

Nigeria was my duty post. When we assessed Nigeria, this was what we found in the southern region: strength, intelligence, a determination to succeed, well established history, complex but focused life styles, great hope and aspirations… the East is good in business and technology, the West is good in administration and commerce, law and medicine, but it was a pity we planned our agenda to give power “at all costs” to (one region), Our mission was accomplished by destroying the opposition on all fronts. The West led in the fight for independence, and was punished for asking for freedom”.

Harold Smith justified the British agenda of colonialism in Nigeria, which he believed was originally to help build Africa after the ruins of slave trade, but lamented that the British only looked after themselves and not Nigerian interest. “The British really let Nigeria down. When I see Nigerians being accused of fraud and from what I saw on the streets of Lagos, the British were the worst fraudsters”, he said.

He said the time has come now to see people of intelligent minds with an open and inclusive agenda for all Nigerians in power, people who will really look after Nigeria’s large population. However, he added: “I still curiously and sorrowfully see now that the British have not let go of Nigeria, her wealth, her future”.

He said that Caucasians now assert themselves as the keepers of the “New Age” keys, adding that it was “only logical for Europeans to maintain their position of power, scientific superiority, economic exploitation; they must continue to perpetuate their lies and falsehoods and this is the most unkind cut of all in relation to the Nigerian situation”.

According to him, Nigeria, a great nation was crippled not because of military juntas or corrupt leaders alone but by the British and American fear of Nigeria’s great future. He confessed, “The fear of the place that will be our ‘dumping ground’ really occupied our minds”. Some of the things he said were not new to Nigerians or to the whole world but hearing it from the horse’s mouth is quite revealing and established more reality zones. He submitted that the colonial masters did a lot of havoc while they were in Africa, and planted time bombs when they finally left. “What we have seen since independence is an administration of new internal colonial masters, fellow Nigerians doing more damage to Nigeria. Instead of detonating the time bombs planted by the British, it is planting mines”.

He added that “It was my duty to carry out all of the above and I was loyal to my country. Nigerians should try to be loyal to their country leaders and followers alike. Love your country. You have got the potentials to be great again and the whole world knows this. I’m sorry for the evil done to Nigeria. I can’t say sorry enough’. My people, this is a great “expo” what do you thinkhuh

HealthDoctors Separate Siamese Twins At Uch by SAKUR(op): 12:17am On Jan 25, 2011
A set of siamese twins weighing 2.5 at birth were successively separated on Thursday, by a team of medical experts.

The separation of the siamese twins born 3.00 a.m by one Jumoke Ajibola, a 26-year-old patent medicine vendor residing in Jos, took the team of experts led by Dr Kayode Ogundoyin about three hours.

The siamese twins, a baby girl and another that was partly formed, were joined in the vaginal area and shared one heart. The partly formed siamese twins only had legs and intestines, but no head.

The surviving twin, currently at the intensive care unit of the hospital is responding well to treatment and weighed 2kg after the surgical separation which included a reconstruction of her vagina.

Hospital sources confirming the incident disclosed that the partly formed twin had been sent to pathologist for assessment of what caused the problem.

Also, tests carried out on the baby girl indicated that she need not fear any complications from her parasitic twins later in the future.
