LAGOS (AFP) – ExxonMobil in Nigeria on Monday announced the discovery of rich gas condensate off the West African country's coast as the government seeks to boost gas supply to help solve electricity shortages. Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, a local joint venture, announced "a rich gas condensate discovery in Oil Mining Licence 104, approximately 75 kilometres (47 miles) offshore of Akwa Ibom State in southeast Nigeria." The Pegi-1 discovery well encountered 165 net feet (50.3 metres) of rich gas condensate, a type of natural gas liquid, it said. "Significant additional potential remains in untested deeper targets within the Pegi fault block as well as in adjacent fault blocks," the statement said. Gas-fired power plants are part of major plans by the Nigerian government to increase electricity supply in Africa's most populous nation, where outages are daily occurrences. "We are focused on developing oil and gas reserves and supplying natural gas that will boost commercial power production in line with the federal government's aspiration," Mark Ward, chairman of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, said in the statement. The country is among the world's largest oil producers, but electricity shortages remain a major frustration, causing businesses and residents who can afford them to use expensive diesel-fired generators. President Goodluck Jonathan has announced plans to privatise electricity generation and distribution in a bid to solve the problem. ExxonMobil is among the major producers in Nigeria's petroleum industry. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20101101/bs_afp/nigeriagascompanyexxonmobil |

Sampdoria striker Antonio Cassano is known for his short temper and on-pitch hissy fits, yet in his autobiography, the 26-year-old reveals his near-legendary inability to keep his pants on when attractive women are around. Cassano, who once called the irrefutably-gifted Rosaria Cannavò his girlfriend, claims to have put away somewhere in the region of 700 ladies. ON Tuesday, 26 October, 2010, when dare-devil, heavily-armed bank robbers invaded the city of Ijebu Ode, Ogun State in the morning, their intention was to succeed in their operation 100 per cent, so they left nothing out that could aid their success, determined to ruthlessly crush any resistance from the law enforcement agents or the people. This could be seen in the kind of heavy artilleries they brought for the operation and the number of gang members that came. The robbers numbered about 20. However, by now they must be still be in shock on how the men of the Ogun State Police Command were able to foil their attempt to rob a bank in the town without losing one of their men while they suffered the casuality of two of their key men and lost their weapons to the police. As was their usual practice whenever they wanted to invade a bank, Sunday Tribune gathered the armed robbers had been in the bush of a village not too far from Ijebu Ode from Monday night after they had assembled from different parts of the country. Some were from the Eastern part of the country while some came from Port Harcourt and others resided in Lagos. Before moving to the bush, the armed robbers had reportedly snatched different vehicles with which they intended to carry out their operation. While in the bush, members of the gang were said to have been trained on how to use the weapons they had while roles were assigned to each person to ensure a successful operation. On the morning of Tuesday, another bus that was snatched was driven into the bush to join others but unknown to the gang members, a villager sighted them as they were entering the bush and saw a gun with one of them. The police were quickly alerted and they traced the vehicle into the bush. However, before they could get near them, some of the armed robbers who had laid ambush sighted the police, and sprayed their patrol van with bullets which forced them to beat a retreat. It was a miracle that no casuality was suffered from the encounter. Not satisfied, the armed robbers reportedly left their base in the bush and went to test their firepower at the police station in Awa Ijebu which was close to the bush they went to. As they got to the front of the police station, the armed robbers were reported to have opened fire on the building, perforating its walls and the roof with bullets. There was no doubt they meant war. It was after that they now moved towards their target, Zenith Bank, in Ijebu Ode. When they got to the entrance of the bank, they shot sporadically into the air to scare people away before aiming their guns at the door of the bank. Sunday Tribune learnt that this was usually done to weaken the glass before they would start using axes and sledge hammer to break it. It was further gathered that the bank manager escaped death by the whiskers as the bullets shot into the banking hall pierced his seat from one end and came out of the other end. As the bullets flew across the banking hall, all staff and customers around went on their bellies to avoid being hit. Before they could start hitting at the door however, they were confronted by the police and a gun battle ensued between the robbers and the law enforcement agents. Sunday Tribune gathered that what could have caused serious devastation and heavy casuality to the police was saved by a Corporal who was in the Armoured Personnel Carrier. According to a reliable source, the APC had been demobilised in the ensuing battle and in order to blow up the APC, the gang leader, whose name was given as Biggie, wanted to fire a rocket launcher at the APC and was in the process of loading a launcher head into the rocket launcher. A mobile policeman , a Corporal, had quickly come out of the APC and aimed at the robber. The MOPOL got him in the shoulder and the rocket launcher dropped from his hand. As he staggered, the MOPOL aimed another shot which caught the robber in the lower abdomen and that brought the gang leader down. Another shot was aimed at another gang member too and that brought the casuality among the gang to two. It was when they saw this that they knew they had failed in their intended operation and decided to beat a retreat, escaping through the Gateway Hotel Road, probably to link up with Lagos-Sagamu-Ore Road. Aside the two dead robbers, two civilians also suffered casualities. One of the victims, a young lady, was caught in the face by the robbers’ bullets when they were shooting sporadically around the bank area. The other victim, an elderly man, was reportedly hit in the head on Gateway Hotel road when the robbers were escaping. It was gathered that the man was in an oncoming commercial vehicle which the robbers wanted to snatch and exchange with their bullet-riddled bus. The driver reportedly tried to outsmart them and they aimed at him through the windscreen. The driver ducked his head and the bullet caught the man sitting right behind him on the head. According to a source who witnessed the arrival of the robbers to the bank, “I was right at the gate when they arrived in a red car and a white bus around 9.50a.m. Immediately, they started firing shots and I took to my heels. I saw one security man inside who quickly locked the door and also ran away when he saw that I had run too. From where I was, I heard their continuous shooting but the mobile policemen attached to the bank really tried. They confronted the robbers while others also moved in with the Armoured Personnel Carrier stationed nearby.” According to a police source, there was an information on that Tuesday morning that armed robbers were operating in a grey Mercedes Benz 190 and had snatched a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XS 967 GGE at Berger in Lagos and were heading towards Lagos/Ibadan expressway. “The information was circulated to all Divisional Police Officers. A few hours after, we were informed that the hoodlums went into a bush path along Ijebu Ode-Ibadan old road. The place is called Ajegunle between Oru and Awa. It was there they started loading ammunition into their firearms. “A villager saw a gun with one of them and alerted the police and the police went there. Those went were very fortunate to have come out alive as the robbers attacked them but they managed to escape. The hoodlums came out of the bush and went to our station at Awa-Ijebu, sprayed the building with bullets and damaged many cars. They had meant to sack the police station. When they could not do that, they headed for Ijebu Ode and went to Zenith Bank there. However, the policemen stationed there with APC were assisted by the local vigilante group who also came out. In the process, two of the armed robbers were felled while some others sustained gunshot injuries which they went away with,” the source told Sunday Tribune. During a press briefing which held at Ogun State Police Command headquarters, Eleweran in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Musa Daura, listed the exhibits recovered from the armed robbers to include one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) with 156 rounds of GPMG ammunition, three AK 47 rifles, two rocket launchers with 10 launcher heads, two sledge hammers, two axes, 62 loaded AK 47 magazines, 61 empty AK 47 magazines, 1,070 rounds of unexpended 7.62 ammunition, 332 AK 47 empty shells, 113 live catridges, 23 different makes of handsets, assorted charms and N8,400. Also recovered from the robbers were a white Toyota Hummer bus with registration number XS967GGE, white Hiace bus with registration number XZ634AAA, Opel Astra Wagon car with registration number FV57LND, Nissan Volkswagen Sharan with registration number BZ242AGL, Toyota Camry with registration number 887KJA, and a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number QJ 649SMK. The Commissioner of Police, while speaking with journalists, enumerated the achievements of the police in Ogun State in the last three months which included the arrest of 66 armed robbers, warning that his men would resist any attempt by criminals to turn Ogun State to a transit point or hiding place. Mr Daura added that his Command had devised means of tackling insecurity in the state with the help of the government and members of the public. http://tribune.com.ng/sun/index.php/features/2389-day-robbers-entered-ijebu-ode-with-rocket-launchers-untold-story-of-the-fierce-battle

LAGOS (AFP) – An illegal arms shipment including rockets and grenades discovered in Nigeria this week was loaded in Iran by an Iranian trader, the firm that operates the vessel that delivered it said on Friday. Security agents this week intercepted 13 containers declared as building materials and discharged from the CMA CGM Everest vessel at the country's busiest port of Apapa in Nigeria's economic hub of Lagos. "The shipment in question was booked as a 'shippers owned container' and supplied loaded and sealed by the shipper, an Iranian trader who does not appear on any 'forbidden persons' listing," said CMA CGM, which operates the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel. CMA CGM, based in France, said the containers were loaded in Bandar Abbas, a southern port city of Iran, and discharged in Lagos in July. But last week the shipper asked to have the containers reloaded and sent to the Gambia, a tiny west African country wedged inside Senegal, according to the firm. Clearance had been obtained before Nigerian customs intervened and halted the shipment, according to CMA CGM. Iranian embassy officials in Nigeria refused to comment, saying a statement would be issued later. A Nigerian intelligence agency spokeswoman has said authorities were on heightened alert following October 1 twin car bombings in the capital that killed at least 12 people. Ten of the containers opened so far contain an array of weaponry, customs spokesman Wale Adeniyi said, despite being declared as building materials. CMA CGM said it has been cleared of any involvement in the illegal shipment and called itself the "victim of (a) false cargo declaration." Two people have reportedly been arrested in connection with the cargo, but security officials have not confirmed the reports. Authorities have publicly refused to speculate on the origins or destination of the shipment, coming just months before presidential elections, but have heightened port security. "Certainly security at the ports has been beefed up and we are trying to move up ahead , and tighten our own systems to block such shipments," Adeniyi told AFP. Regarding paperwork for the shipment that contained the weapons, Adeniyi said "the documents were irregular, and we felt that the names given on them were false." Precise quantities of the weapons will be known after all the containers are opened, he said. So far, the 10 examined contained "similar contents -- mortars, grenades, light ammunition and of course tiles," said Adeniyi. The ship's last port of call before arriving in Nigeria was India's Jawaharlal Nehru port near Mumbai, the customs service has said. The vessel berthed in the Nigerian port on July 10 and sailed out on July 15. Illegal weapons are widespread in Nigeria, and the discovery has sparked fresh concerns with presidential elections set to be held early next year. Ballots have frequently been tainted by violence in the oil-rich nation. Militants in the Niger Delta, the country's main oil-producing region, have carried out scores of attacks there in recent years. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, the country's most prominent militant group, claimed the October 1 car bombings. A series of attacks have also been carried out by suspected members of an Islamist sect, known as Boko Haram, in the country's north in recent months. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20101029/wl_africa_afp/nigeriaweaponsiran

It sure sounds unbelievable, but a young woman has been delivered of a snake in Umuahia. The woman delivered the scary reptile on Wednesday following hours of intense prayers at the Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim Church, along Eze Ogbulafor Street, Umuahia, Abia State. Chairman of the Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC) in Abia state, Apostle Emmanuel Agomoh, who is also the head of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim in the state said a priest, Apostle Uche Ugwu had engaged himself in hours of prayers to cause the delivery of the snake from the private part of the 35-year-old lady whose names are being withheld. The snake, said to have been programmed into the woman’s womb since her secondary school days, was headless and tailless. The incident, which has become the talk of the town, happened around 5p.m. on Wednesday at the church premises. Daily Sun learnt that the young lady hails from Olokoro in Umuahia South LGA. She was said to have delivered the snake like a woman under labour following prayers by the priest that everything that was not of God in her should come out of her body. The incident attracted a large crowd. Apostle Agomoh said the snake forced itself out of the woman’s private part with the intention of attacking Apostle Ugwu. The cleric’s younger brother, however, was able to kill the animal. The cleric said the woman came to the church on Monday for prayers following the pains she had been experiencing all over her body since she was in secondary school. According to him, it was at this juncture that one of the prayer warriors in the church Apostle Ugwu conducted the prayers that forced the snake out of her body. “As I was praying and calling on whatever was inside the lady to come out, the lady was writhing in pains. The snake even wanted to attack me until my brother here killed it with the stick,” Ugwu told our reporter. He said such miracles happen very often in the church. “But we don’t advertise it and we don’t use any fetish things here. We only engage in prayers,” he said. Daily Sun learnt that the lady, who is still in shock is currently recuperating in her village. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/oct/29/national-29-10-2010-010.htm

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar American lecturers at the American University of Nigeria, owned by the former vice-president and now presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, earn one million dollars per month. This was disclosed by Abubakar, at the second National Joint Education Stakeholders Action Coalition held in Abuja on Thursday. According to him under the salary was part of the negotiations that he had with an American university in Washington D.C in the United States before it allowed the lecturers to come to Nigeria. Atiku said, “Today I do not derive one kobo from all the investments I have made in education. Rather, in the university I still continue to pay the American lecturers one million dollars every month because the school fees that they are charging are not even enough to fuel the generators that they are running because the university was built to American standard. Because I have a special agreement with the American university in Washington, managing the university and everything I do must conform to American standard.” http://www.punchontheweb.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201010295293351 |
Another dimention to the whole saga. |
The controversy surrounding the arms haul at the Apapa Wharf in Lagos assumed a wider dimension on Thursday, as Israeli military officials claimed that the weapons were bound for the Gaza Strip. According to wikipedia.com, the Gaza Strip lies on the Eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The Strip borders Egypt on the South-West and Israel on the South, East and North. It is about 41 kilometres long and between six and 12 kilometres wide, with a total area of 360 square kilometres. Although it is under the administration of the Palestinians Authority, Israel maintains control over the crossings in and out of Gaza. Israel recently intercepted a number of ships carrying aid to Gaza, accusing their operators of trying to breach its embargo on the Hamas-controlled territory. The Israeli military officials, who declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to journalists, told the Associated Press in Lagos that the military-grade armaments originated from Iran. Nigerian officials had said on Wednesday that the arms came from India. Iran remains a bitter enemy of Israel and supports Islamic militant groups in Lebanon and Gaza that are in a state of war with the Jewish state. In the winter of 2008, Israel launched a military campaign against Iran-backed militants in Gaza in an attempt to stop years of almost daily rocket attacks on southern Israel. The Israeli officials declined to provide evidence to support their claims, citing ‘security concerns.’ But Hamas leader, Ismail Radwan, denied that the weapons were headed for Gaza. Hamas is the largest and most influential Palestinian militant movement which has since attaining power in Palestine in Januay 2006 continued its refusal to recognise the state of Israel. The Israeli afficials and Radwan spoke with the AP shortly after the National Security Adviser, Gen. Andrew Azazi (retd.), met in Abuja with top security chiefs over the Apapa Wharf seizure. When THE PUNCH sought the view of a marine historian, Prof. Ayodeji Olukoju, on the Israeli military authorities’s claim, he said the logistics of moving weapons cache to Gaza Strip from India through Nigeria was implausible. Olukoju, who has just been appointed as the vice-chancellor, Caleb University, Imota, Lagos State, said, “Nothing can be ruled out in a deadly global power politics, especially the life and death struggle in the Middle East. “But the logistics of moving the weapons cache to Gaza makes this implausible. Maybe, Israeli intelligence knows what we don’t or it is a red herring.” The claim by the Israeli military officials conflicts with the statement by officials of the Nigeria Customs Service that the weapons, which included 107mm artillery rockets, were destined for the country. President Goodluck Jonathan had while reacting to the seizure of the arms and ammunition said the importer had a sinister motive. The NCS also said on Wednesday that the vessel (MV Everest) that brought in the arms and ammunition berthed at the Apapa Wharf on July 10 and left on July 15, 2010 after the containers, in which the weapons were concealed, had been off-loaded. It added in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Wale Adeniyi, that MV Everest last stopped at Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port in India before coming to Nigeria. Adeniyi said there had been some attempts to clear the containers “for importation into Nigeria” but “we understood later that there was an application to re-export them.” MV Everest, a cargo ship registered in the Marshall Islands, is chartered by CMA-CGM, a shipping company based in France. In a statement released on Thursday, CMA-CGM said the containers holding the weapons were owned by the firm that shipped them. The shipping company said the manifest for the weapons described the shipment as “packages of glasswool and pallets of stone.” The containers “were supplied, loaded and sealed by the shipper, delivered to the port of loading for transportation and remained sealed during the whole transportation process, The seals were fully intact upon discharge in Nigeria, the statement added.” The company declined to comment further other than to say it had cooperated with Nigerian security services. In the hands of highly trained troops, the 107 mm artillery rockets can accurately hit targets as far as eight and a half kilometres away, killing everything within about 40 feet. Fighters in Afghanistan and Iraq have used similar rockets against American troops. China, the US and Russia manufacture versions of the rocket, as does Iran – which calls the weapon a Katyusha rocket. In 2006, the Islamic militant group, Hezbollah, fired nearly 4,000 Katyusha rockets across Israel’s northern border, some of which fell as far as 90 kilometres inside Israel. When our correspondent contacted the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ozo Nwobu, to ascertain if the ministry had contacted Iran on the allegation, he replied, “All questions pertaining to that incident should be directed to security agencies handling the investigation.” But a source said the ministry would only take up the matter with the affected country after investigations had been concluded by security agents. An official of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abuja, who declined to be named, said the allegation was unfounded. The official said, “You know we have a lot of enemies. Did your people see the bill of lading? Did it say it was from Iran? Was anyone arrested and the person confessed that we were involved? We need answers to these questions.” THE PUNCH learnt in Abuja on Thursday that Azazi, met for over five hours with top security chiefs led by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Oluseyi Petirin, over the arms seizure. It was also gathered that the Federal Government had directed stricter security presence at the ports in Apapa, Onne and other parts of the country to forestall their use for arms shipment. A source, who made this known, added that the government had directed that security be beefed up in all the nation’s air and sea ports. “The Navy has been put on the alert and has been instructed to strictly monitor all the waterways so that nobody can ship arms into the country. The President is concerned about the matter of arms proliferation in the country and he wants everything possible to be done to reduce it,” he said. http://www.punchontheweb.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201010293582734 |
LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigerian customs officials say the cargo ship that brought an illegal shipment of military-grade weapons to the West African nation arrived there after a stop in India. Customs Service spokesman Wale Adeniyi said Thursday that the MV CMA-CGM Everest dropped the weapons off at Lagos' busy Apapa Port in July. Adeniyi says the ship last stopped at Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port. CMA-CGM, a shipping company based in France, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. According to the company's website, the ship is registered in the Marshall Islands. Authorities discovered the weapons, including 107 mm artillery rockets, on Tuesday. The seizure comes as Nigeria plans for what could be a highly contested presidential election next year. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101028/ap_on_re_af/af_nigeria_arms_seizure |
Former military president and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), General Ibrahim Babangida, on Wednesday, led his campaign team to Lokoja, Kogi State capital, with a warning that the nation may be plunged into troubled waters if the party jettisons the zoning arrangement, which it agreed on in 2002. Babangida dropped the bombshell through his campaign director, Dr Raymond Dokpesi, who made presentation to the state governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, and the people of the state at the banquet hall of Government House. Babangida, who reminded the governor of the 2002 expanded meeting of PDP where it was agreed that the South should have the presidential slot for eight years, which he said was later ratified by the party’s Board of Trustees headed by Chief Tony Anenih, saying that this gave the then president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the second term in 2003. According to him, “Your Excellency, you were at the expanded meeting in 2002 where an agreement was reached that the South should have two terms of eight years. The decision then gave President Obasanjo the second term of office, and later in 2002 Section 14 2 C indicated the reality of the rotation in the party because the then chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, presented this decision which was ratified by the party.” He stated that the issue of zoning was what made PDP strong, “because it gives equal right to every one and if the party jettison this path, it is only trying to bring misfortune and disadvantage to the nation”. “Already, USA warned that the nation may disintegrate in 2015 and I think we are now paving the way for this,” the campaign coordinator warned. He said that the present administration had failed the nation, stressing that the ominous sign in the country had shown that the nation’s security was porous, citing the October 1 bomb explosion in Abuja. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/12760-zoning-nigeria-may-plunge-into-problems-ibb |
The chairman of United Nation’s Foundation and founder of Cable New Network (CNN), Mr Ted Turner, has donated $1 billion towards the eradication of polio in Nigeria. “Nigeria must keep up the fight against child killer diseases by continuing to leverage the power of modern vaccine that is key to eradicating polio and reducing measles,” he said. He was impressed that Nigeria had reduced cases of polio by 98 per cent with only eight cases confirmed in 2010 and donated $1 billion for the cause. Turner, who visited the Sokoto sultanate in the Northern part Nigeria also paid a courtesy visit to Sultan, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar. “With support from traditional leaders like the Sultan, we are on the verge of achieving the first great humanitarian victory of the 21st century, the complete elimination of a disease that once afflicted millions,” he said. Polio virus spread out from Northern Nigeria in 2008 and sparked an outbreak in 17 African countries posing a major challenge to the World Health Organisation (WHO). http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/12769-cnn-founder-donates-1bn-to-nigeria-for-polio-eradication |

ABUJA: Most Christians will be familiar with the biblical story of the rescue of the Israelites after many years of servitude in Egypt. However, the rescue effort was to be followed by another 40 years spent wandering in the wilderness before the Israelites eventually got to the promised land. •Dr. Chima Emmanuel Okereke If Dr. Chima Emmanuel Okereke, the General Overseer of Global Success Ministries and President, Success Family Values Initiatives is to be believed, Nigeria is about to go through a similar experience. The General Overseer recently told journalists in Abuja that just like the Israelites, Nigeria is about to begin a 40-year journey, at the end of which it would become the envy of other countries; that is, by the time it is marking its 90th year of independence. The cleric said a key plan of God to achieve this is the eradication of corruption. According to him, God will begin this with the next set of office holders at every level of governance across the country and any sensible politician should begin to treat corruption the same way he or she would treat the HIV virus. “I saw an angel of death sent by God to destroy the spirit of corruption in this nation; so corruption now in any seat of power is like HIV/AIDS. Anyone that is afraid of HIV/AIDS should be afraid of corruption after May 29th. The angel has started taking a survey of the lawmakers and that is why I have written to the Senate and the House of Representatives,” Okereke told reporters. Noting that most Nigerians have been denied essentials of modern life like electricity, good healthcare, good educational system and the like despite the tremendous resources that have accrued to the country in the past 50 years of its independence, the General Overseer warned: “To avoid these deaths, which will commence within 36 months, politicians should respect the Bible and the Qu’ran with which they are to take oath of office.” –Reported by Oluokun Ayorinde. http://thenewsafrica.com/2010/10/25/abuja-death-prophecy-for-corrupt-politicians/

POWER generation is set to drop by about 1,200 megawatts as Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited shuts down its Utorogu gas plant today (Tuesday) for upgrade and repair works. The country currently generates 3,200MW of electricity. The shutdown of the plant, which processes gas that goes into the Escravos Lagos Pipeline, will affect gas supply to the Lagos Thermal Station, Egbin, Omotosho, Olorunsogo and Delta IV power stations. During the period of the shutdown, which will last for 33 days, the drop in generation will range between 600MW and 1,200MW, according to analysts. Already, on behalf of the SPDC/Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Joint Venture, the NNPC had asked the Power Holding Company of Nigeria to prepare to use alternative fuel to run some of its power generating units at the Egbin and Delta IV power stations. A statement made available on Monday by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC, Dr. Levi Ajuonuma, explained that the shutdown was designed to enable Shell to complete and inaugurate an integrated control system to facilitate the upgrade of the plant to over 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. According to Ajuonuma, the planned upgrade will take place over a 33-day period – 25 days for partial and post shutdown period, and eight days for total shutdown. He explained that the maximum production deferment during the partial and post-shutdown period was 150 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, while for the total shutdown, the supply deferment was 300 million scfd. Ajuonuma said, ”However, this will not have any adverse effect on power supply to the nation as NNPC has taken some strong remedial measures to curtail the impact of the envisaged shortfall of about 1,200 MW to the national grid during the eight-day period of total shutdown, from November 5 to 13, 2010. ”Already, the NNPC has facilitated the maximisation of gas production from available gas plants, particularly from the NNPC/ Chevron JV facility.” He said, “Under the arrangement, Chevron will increase its gas production from 180-200 million scf/d, while gas production at the Pan Ocean Oil Corporation Nigeria Limited‘s facility will surge to 65 million scf/d within the period. At this time, it is envisaged that gas supply to the West Africa Gas Pipelines will decrease from 50 million scf/d to 30 million scf/d. Ajuonuma said a request had been dispatched to the PHCN to operate its dual fuel units at Egbin and Delta IV on fuel oil during the production deferment period. He added, “The proposed shutdown of the Utorogu gas plant has become crucial at this point in view of the need to ensure process safety, optimise gas production and prevent a total breakdown of the plant as well as reduce costs of contractor personnel and equipment, which have been on standby for a while.” http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201010263594353 |
