Christianity EtcDo Christians Have To Go To Church? by Sambusiness(op): 7:16am On Jul 30, 2017
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Christians are never explicitly commanded to attend church in scripture, but as you can see from Hebrews 10:24-25, we are encouraged to do so. Not attending church isn’t a sin or something that will keep you from being a Christian, but church is a highly influential part of your walk with God.

So here are three reasons you should go to church:

1. Worship

When we go to church, we have the opportunity for corporate worship with other believers, something we can’t do alone at home. We can also worship God through our tithes and offerings.

“God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24)

2. Fellowship

As Christians, it is so important that we surround ourselves with strong believers who will encourage our relationship with God. If you are only surrounded by non-believers (for example at school) all the time, they may eventually drag you down or slow down your faith, no matter how strong you are.

Fellowship (or sharing in community) with other Christians will build you up in your walk with God, and also give you the opportunity to encourage others.

God calls us to be part of His family, and to bring our spiritual gifts together to further glorify Him. If we aren’t in church, we can’t do this. We’re not only missing out on blessing others with our gifts but also being blessed.

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7)

3. Growth

By going to church, you also strengthen your relationship with the Father. By setting aside time to worship Him, you are showing Him that your relationship with Him is important.

"Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple.” (Psalm 65:4)

What if I can't make it to church?

Worship Music
Listening to worship music is very helpful in turning your heart towards God, and it can be a good substitute to the worship you are missing at church. Not sure where to start? Check out Hillsong United, Passion, Chris Tomlin or Kari Jobe.

Fellowship
Find an online Bible Study community, or find a local Bible study or youth group to have fellowship with others your age. Not sure where to start? Check out Community Bible Study.

Growth
If you can’t attend church, make an effort to spend time in God’s word and in prayer daily. By reading God’s word, you’re allowing God to speak to you. Not sure where to start? Check out daily Bible reading plan.
Christianity EtcBe The Change You Want To See In Your Church by Sambusiness(op): 7:06am On Jul 30, 2017
Are you more of a passenger than a captain at church? Maybe it's time to step up and take action.

"I just don’t want to stay on a ship that’s sinking” a friend once told me in reference to our local church and youth group, adding “that’s the Captain’s job”. True to her intentions, she proceeded to leave the church, jump ship and join the vast sea of statistics. In fact, according to a recent study done by LifeWay Research, 70% of youth and young adults will leave the church.

Her statement still haunts me; if she was right, what am I doing still standing stubbornly on the deck of a sinking ship? In my personal search, I believe I uncovered a motivation to stay in church that is rooted in my very identity as a Christian.

The church is our responsibility

In 1 Peter 2:9, the Bible gives us not only a detailed job description, but a tried and true method to identify a true Christian. It states “But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.” (The Message)

In Bible days, the priests were the ones that took responsibility for the church. I guess we could compare them to the captain of a ship. So why does God tell us in this passage that WE are chosen for the same type of work in this generation? Why should we act like the church is OUR responsibility?

I think the answer is simple. It comes down to deciding who you are to the church. Are you a passenger or a captain?

Passengers and Captains

Passengers on ships are usually just there to enjoy the ride, complain when things go wrong, be guaranteed a safe exit in case of an emergency, and be served by the Captain and his or her crew.

If you find yourself viewing the church as an organization there to serve you, to entertain you, and to make you happy, you are most likely a passenger at church. But our role within the church is not to sit back and take it easy. It is to follow in Jesus' footsteps and do the work of a captain who serves. This is the highest calling, and one of the secrets to finding fulfilment in church.

I’ll be honest, there are some weekends when I actually wake up and dread going to church. Sometimes the feeling just isn’t there, and going to church seems more like an archaic tradition than a relevant growing experience with God (probably due to a skewed passenger-to-captain ratio). But when I step back and look to the example Jesus set for us, I am left standing there awkwardly with a load of lame excuses.

Jesus - the church changer

You see, in the time of Jesus, "Church" wasn't all that different either. You had the Pharisees and Sadducees and all kinds of other passengers going to the churches during that time. These people could probably take home the prize for being the most hypocritical, fake, self—righteous church members of all time. They had very strict rules and formalities on the outside, but inside their relationships with God were rotting away. In other words, they were experts on masking their true identities. If you don’t take my word for it, read what Jesus has to say about them in Mathew chapter 23!

And yet, in Luke 4:16 it says “And he [Jesus] came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue (or church) on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.” Not only does Jesus actually go to their hypocritical church, he actually leads the service!

While Jesus was on earth, he totally gave the organized church a 180 degree revolution. It didn’t happen overnight — the messed up passengers didn’t all disembark at one time — and the church wasn’t magically “healed”. But change did happen.

One of my all time favorite quotes is from the peace loving Gandhi who once said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world” . And I would venture to say that the same concept applies to church as well.

Change begins with you

If you want the church to be more loving, you have to love the church and the people in it more. Spend time with them, know their names, visit them, and get to know them individually.

If you want the church to be more accepting, start by including the outcasts and those who get left out at church. Maybe it’s an older lady who’s gone to your church for decades, but still gets neglected. Or maybe it’s that awkward new kid who just visited your youth group, you know, the one that the “cool crowd” is ignoring.

If you want the church to be less judgmental, start by not judging the people who judge you. As soon as someone makes a hurtful or unjust comment to you, the easiest thing to do is think they are just being wickedly malicious. But you never know what someone is going through or the motives of their heart. Be fair even if they’re not.

If you want church to be exciting and relevant, get out there and do big things for God. Go on a mission trip to another country. Pledge to introduce Jesus to one of your friends, someone your age, this year. Get involved with actively reaching out to your community. Preach a sermon. Visit somebody in the hospital. Volunteer at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter.

And then tell me that church isn’t exciting! You see, church is more than going to a building once a week, church is a lifestyle.

Above all, ask God what amazing and exciting plans He has for you individually. Be the change — act like a captain.
Christianity EtcThree Reasons To Get To Church On Time by Sambusiness(op): 6:51am On Jul 30, 2017
I must admit, I’m not naturally someone who runs on time. I don’t really like waking up early, and often if I’m in the middle of something I don’t feel like I want to be restrained by deadlines or appointments.

But I’ve recently become convicted of the many reasons to get to church on time, or even early! As young people (especially those of us with our own transport), it’s not really that hard – we don’t have kids to buckle up into the car, or a whole bunch of people to organise.
Getting to church on time is actually really important, and I think we need to be starting to get into this habit in our teenage years.

So without further ado, here are three reasons for you to get to church on time regularly:

1. To meet new people

A few weeks ago at the evening church service I attend, I looked out on the congregation ten minutes before the service was due to start. There in the chairs sat three groups of people who I’d never seen before, glancing through their service handouts. Unfortunately, there were very few regular churchgoers at church at that point (apart from those of us in the band), and so there was no one there talking to them. What a missed opportunity.

Let’s face it – new people are usually the ones who get to church early. And if you get to church even five minutes before the service starts, you can welcome them before the first song even begins.

Our churches need to be welcoming new people, whether they’re Christians visiting from another church, Christians who might be looking at coming to the church, or people who are yet to know Christ just coming along to see what it’s all about. It’s good to meet new people after the service over tea and coffee. But welcoming them – and having a good conversation with them – before the service even begins is going to make them feel so much more at home. It could be the difference that makes them want to come back next week!

2. To encourage the encouragers

I could be a bit biased here, as I’m usually playing in the band at church, but I think it’s true – getting to church on time shows those serving at the service that you appreciate what they do. If you’re there when the service begins, and sing heartily along to the music, listen when the bible is read and listen to what the service’s MC has put together, you are showing that you appreciate the work they are putting in to encourage the church.

Contrast this with regularly turning up fifteen or even twenty minutes into the service. As someone who often is serving up the front at the start of the service, I get the message that you don’t think what goes on at the start of the service with is that important. You don’t value the way the music team has rehearsed and are using their efforts to lead the congregation in praise to God. And you don’t value the work that the MC, the bible readers and the person praying have put into helping the congregation grow in and be encouraged in their faith. You just come to church to hear the sermon – or worse, for the refreshments afterwards!

Of course, the people serving up the front shouldn’t be doing it to impress people – they should be doing it for God. But as fellow brothers and sisters, we should be encouraging them as they encourage us, and appreciate what they do.

3. Because it shows and sets your priorities

Regularly turning up to church late might not seem that big a deal for you. But I think if we’re really honest, it’s just a symptom of the real problem – we don’t see church as important as it should be.

What is it that makes us late for church?

Maybe we were asleep and just wanted a few more minutes in bed.

Maybe we were halfway through a DVD and wanted to finish it off.

Maybe we were hanging out with friends and didn’t want the conversations to end.

Maybe we wanted to stop off at McDonald’s on the way to church, or…

Maybe we were finishing off an assignment that we really should have done earlier.

See, when we do this regularly, we’re putting sleep and entertainment and friends and food and schoolwork before church.

And why is church so important? Because the bible says it is (and for good reasons)!

In Hebrews 10, the author urges his readers:

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” – Hebrews 10:23-25 (NIV)

The same applies for us – we are to hold on to the hope we have in Jesus, and spur one another toward love and good deeds. We’re to keep on meeting together regularly at church – for that is how we encourage each other, as we look for the day when Jesus returns.

Church isn’t just a bunch of randoms meeting in a building each week. It’s not just a combination of readings and songs and talks. It’s the time when we encourage each other in our faith, reminding each other to hold onto the hope we have in Jesus, as we wait for him to return.
PoliticsDear Nigerian Youths, Will You VOTE PRESIDENT BUHARI To Remain In Power In 2019 by Sambusiness(op): 7:40pm On Jul 29, 2017
Muhammadu Buhari left Nigeria for London on May 8, 2017 for treatment of an undisclosed ailment.

He entrusted Presidential duties to Vice Presient Yemi Osinbajo, promising to return as soon as possible.

With rumours around the country that President had died a long time ago, it was good news when recent photos of the President in a happy mood began circulating the internet after a visit from some APC Governors in the country.

In fact political party rival PDP Governors described President Muhammadu Buhari recovery in London as a ‘miracle’

We are banking on Buhari to return to Nigeria in good health soon and IF that happens, we have a question below for Nairalandites
