Health / Mobiles May Increase Risk Of Tinnitus, Study Suggests by samhealt1: 3:29pm On Jul 22, 2010
Regularly using a mobile phone may increase the risk of tinnitus, which involves constant ringing or buzzing in the ear, a small study suggests.

Austrian researchers recruited 100 people with the condition and 100 without, and compared mobile phone use.

They found tinnitus was over 70% more likely in those averaging 10 minutes' daily phone use, reported Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal.

But the British Tinnitus Association said a link was unproven.

While intense noise, head trauma and certain drugs are all known to increase the risk of the ear condition, in many cases the reasons are unknown. visit:http://healthwise101..com for more details. kindly drop your comment.
Health / Childbirth: Risks And Reality by samhealt1: 11:56pm On Jul 17, 2010
I have no doubt some mums-to-be will be unnerved by research which suggests that giving birth out of office hours is more risky than during the day. According to a study of more than a million Scottish births, babies born at night or at the weekend have a small additional risk of dying.

The deaths happened among otherwise healthy babies who were starved of oxygen because of some major complication during labour or delivery. It's worth stressing such deaths are unusual - about four in every 10,000 births. Across the UK as a whole, the additional level of risk would be equivalent to about 50-100 infant deaths per year, for more details visit: http://healthwise101..com/
Health / World Cup Fans' Hiv Risk Warning by samhealt1: 11:28pm On Jul 17, 2010
Doctors are advising football fans who went to the World Cup in South Africa to check their HIV status if they had unprotected sex on their trip.

Up to 25,000 England fans recently returned from South Africa, where about six million people have HIV.

More than two-thirds of heterosexual men and a quarter of women who contract HIV do so through holiday sex.

An awareness campaign is urging those who may have put themselves at risk to visit their local sexual health clinic.

The campaign - 'Beer Goggle Johnny's Guide to Sexual Health' - has been launched by Birmingham's Heartlands Hospital, but is backed by national organisations.

Dr Steve Taylor, sexual health and HIV consultant at Heartlands Hospital, said nearly one in five young adults living in South Africa were infected with the virus, and in some areas it could be as high as one in three.

"During the festivities if holiday makers had unprotected sex it is more important than ever to get themselves checked out on their return," he said.

British Association for Sexual Health and HIV
"Although the public are more aware of the dangers of unsafe sex these days, we are not seeing people putting this into practice, which is worrying.

"It's while on holiday, as people relax, soak in the sun and consume alcohol, the chance of having unprotected sex is increased.

"We want holiday makers to take precautions, pack condoms in their suitcase and attend sexual health screenings on their return if they are unsure."

He added: "The only way we can help prevent widespread infection of STIs (sexually transmitted infections) in this country is through early testing, and treating infections before they can spread - and when they are easier to treat.

"Even HIV, for so long a virus to dread, can be managed very effectively if detected in its early stages."

Check-up

The Beer Goggle Johnny campaign began as a local initiative, but the national roll-out is being backed by organisations including the Terrence Higgins Trust and the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH).

As well as a website promoting the Beer Goggle Johnny campaign Heartlands are offering to customise posters for clinics around the UK using the same characters and information alongside local information about clinics and advice.

Peter Greenhouse of BASHH said it strongly supported the "amusing and engaging" campaign.

"There's always a sharp increase in STI cases after the summer holidays," he said.

"With 25,000 football supporters returning from South Africa, and many more about to go away for the summer, it's a great move to get a check-up when you return and to use condoms when you're away.

"People are most likely to infect others with HIV just after they've been infected themselves, just after they come home - so Beer Goggles Johnny could be a lifesaver
Family / Teenagers 'desperate' For A Baby by samhealt1: 3:25am On Jul 11, 2010
Mandy, Chantelle and Maggie Pitt
Chantelle's mother Mandy had her daughter when she was 17

Sixteen-year-old Chantelle lost her virginity at 13. Having been with her boyfriend for a year and a half, she was desperate for a child."I could see myself as a mum next year pushing a baby around, I get jealous when I see people with babies, I feel like it should be me."But her mother, Mandy Pitt, was horrified by the idea, as she knew only too well the stark reality of being a teenage mother.

"She basically thinks that she's got all the answers and all the solutions, like, 'oh you'll help me', well I won't, I'm not turning my back on her, but I won't help her make that wrong decision. "Chantelle wanting a child brings back memories, I made that decision at 17 and thought I was ready to have a baby.

At one point I got the Argos catalogue out and wrote everything down that I'd need if I had a child

"I ended up on my own… and it was really rough and it was tough and there was no support or nothing… it was horrible not having anyone to turn to."Mrs Pitt found teenage motherhood so hard she eventually gave her child up for adoption… and was adamant that Chantelle did not follow in her footsteps.But there was an underlying reason why Chantelle was so desperate for a baby.

"I want a baby because I had an abortion when I was 14, I didn't want to do it but I had to because I needed to live myself and ever since, there's just been that little bit missing."Headstrong only child Lydia, was convinced she was independent enough to raise a child, even though she's only 14 and does not have a boyfriend.

"I don't know anyone else who wants a baby as much as me… I really, really, really, really, really want a baby. "At one point I got the Argos catalogue out and wrote everything down that I'd need if I had a child." Lydia's mother Josephine Boggis was 37 when she had her daughter, and cannot understand why she would want to throw her teenage years away. "I think she's looking for something or someone she can shower in love, something that she can be in charge of, because she likes to be in charge."

The relationship between Lydia and her mother has been strained, and has played a large part in the reason why Lydia wants a baby. "Well I'd love to have a baby so you could bring it up like you wanted to have been brought up, if you know what I mean." In order to help the girls make an informed decision about getting pregnant, both were taken to see what their future could be like.

They met with teenage mothers who were living in one-bed mother and baby hostels. Kim, who is now 16, gave birth to her son when she was 13. With nowhere to go after he was born, she was one day away from being housed in a hostel for drug users and abused women.

"You have no choice, it's not that easy to get a house. "I don't know why you'd want to have a baby so young. "I don't want people to make the same mistake as me and to have to face everything that I have, just because they want a child."

Lydia and her mother Josephine Boggis Lydia and her mother clashed over her desire to get pregnant. Both families visited a maternity ward and talked openly and honestly about themselves and their relationships with a psychotherapist. The teenagers also had a sleepless night looking after computerised babies, in order to have all the information they needed to make a decision. After going through a week of these tough challenges, Chantelle and Lydia decided that motherhood could most definitely wait. Chantelle has enrolled at a hairdressing college and has decided to wait at least a decade before having a baby.

Chantelle said: "When I see babies and (their) mums now I feel sorry for them and ask, 'are they good sleepers? "That's the first thing I ask."

Her mother Mandy Pitt has said she is thrilled with her daughter's decision."To hear her say that now, I think phew, it's amazing, it's just a relief you know, and I just think, thank you."And while Lydia still likes the idea of having a baby, she has decided to pursue a career in the catering trade first. "When I see babies I think, 'oh how sweet', I'll definitely have one one day… in the future."
Health / Pregnant Women 'must Take Vitamin D Supplements' by samhealt1: 3:54am On Jul 05, 2010
Pregnant women in the UK should be told to routinely take vitamin D supplements, researchers say.

The team at University College London Institute of Child Health says official bodies currently offer conflicting advice.

Writing in the British Journal of Nutrition, they say there is a "strong case" for a daily dose of vitamin D in pregnancy.

But one leading expert said more evidence was needed.

The Department of Health advises pregnant women to ensure they receive a certain level of vitamin D - 10 micrograms per day. The researchers say this in effect endorses use of supplements, because diet and the sun provide too little.

Can't remember where you put your glasses? Blanked on your new colleague'as name? "Forgetting these types of things is a sign of how busy we are," says Zaldy S. Tan, MD, director of the Memory Disorders Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. "When we're not paying good attention, the memories we form aren't very robust, and we have a problem retrieving the information later." Health / Key Functions Of Fat by samhealt1: 5:55pm On May 20, 2010
We need some fat - it makes up part of our brains, it protects some of our joints and it provides reserves for when we're sick - but it slips down so effortlessly, it's easy to overindulge.

* Fat provides needed energy. It is difficult to eat the large amounts of food in a very low fat diet to get all the energy you need.
* Fat is needed so your body can absorb the fat soluble vitamins A, S, E, K, and prevent deficiencies of these vitamins.
* Provides back-up energy if blood sugar supplies run out (after 4-6 hours without food).
* Provides insulation under the skin from the cold and the heat.
* Protects organs and bones from shock and provides support for organs.
* Fat surrounds and insulates nerve fibers to help transmit nerve impulses.
* Fat is part of every cell membrane in the body. It helps transport nutrients and metabolites across cell membranes.
* Your body uses fat to make a variety of other building blocks needed for everything from hormones to immune function.

What happens if we don't have enough fat?

* Dry, scaly skin
* Hair loss
* Low body weight
* Cold intolerance
* Bruising
* Poor growth
* Lower resistance to infection
* Poor wound healing
* Loss of menstruation
