LiteratureMy Experience In Computer Village by Samoginni(op): 1:08am On Jun 13, 2020
Ah, I have been defrauded

This is a common song most Lagosian sing when they try to get their phone fixed in Lagos. But as a phone engineer, what can I do.

My name is Oluwatosin Oginni. And this is my story.

I have been a Smartphone engineer for the past 5 years. Like most young agile Nigerians, I had the vision to make a difference in the phone industry. I had four core values in mind:

1) Integrity

2) Efficiency

3) Speed

4) Consistency.

But upon joining the workforce, I discovered things were not as it seemed.

Reason

“How do you convince a hard working generation that integrity and education are the keys to success and honor when they are surrounded by poor hard working people and rich criminals?”

In a country like Nigeria, most youths believe in making money fast. They are always thought that if you are not smart, you would be outsmarted by other smart people. This tends to be good advice but it is generally misinterpreted by Nigerian youths.

To us, we have to look for ways to make money from everything. Even if it means defrauding others or selling fake phone parts to customers.

I remembered my first day as a phone engineer in computer village. A customer brought a Nokia Lumia phone for me to repair. According to the customer, he had gotten a repair cost of N8000 from another engineer. This means that I needed to beat the cost of that engineer before can stand a chance of repairing the phone.

I was really happy and excited because I knew that this was my first customer and I wanted to give the first good impression to my customer. But after asking the cost of an original lumia phone screen, I discovered that the cost of the screen alone was more than the N8000. I felt disappointed and tried to see if there were other places where I could get an original phone screen for less but I could not.

Long story short, I lost the customer.

You see, I knew that the previous engineer was going to give the customer a fake phone screen. I tried to convince the customer, but he was hell-bent on repairing the phone with the other engineer.

After this incident, I began questioning myself.

Life is not fair at all. How can I survive this?

For the first two weeks, I repaired only 8 smartphones while my other friends were repairing about 8 per day. I had the right mindset and motive, but nothing good was coming out of it.

After two weeks of making little money, I decided to go and seek some advice from a big bro.

"Bro i feel your pain. but you see, there is a saying that is you cant beat them, join them. You see, if you give customers original parts, it would take you 10 years to build a house in the village. And i am sure you don't want that.
so if you want to get rich quick, i advise you don’t try to fight it instead just do it. Even God will understand."

This was the advice given to me by my supposed big bro.

But you see, my grandpa once told me something,

“Integrity is the seed for achievement. It is the principle that never fails”.

I have always meditated on those words. I knew that I might not get many customers, but I would get the right customers. I also determined in my heart that I would give all my customers an experience of a lifetime.

Well it paid off at the end.

After 4 years of working in computer village, I met one of my distant mentors; Mr Abayomi.

He stated that he was starting a phone repair center and he would like me to join them. He added that the repair center would be the first automated repair center in Nigeria. In addition to this, all repairs would be done at an affordable rate.

I first questioned his words because I knew it was not easy to get original phone parts in Nigeria and still repair the phone at an affordable rate.

Well, it’s been a year since I joined fixtel and I can tell you that it was the best decision I have ever made. I have had the best year of my life and I look forward to having better years with this amazing phone repair company.

Firstly, I work with teams that put customers first. All repairs are done with our customers in mind. All parts repaired are given a 6 month warranty. This is to give our customers the assurance that we give you the best phone parts money can buy at an affordable rate.

Secondly, customers are always smiling every day. To us, a happy customer means a happy day for us.

At Fixtel, we live to give customers the wow experience. To prove my point, 72% of our customers heard about us from friends and family, 81% of our customers patronized us more than two times, 96.7% of our customers stated that they loved our repair services and absolutely recommend us to their friends and family.

Let’s take a look at real customers comment:

• Professional service with no compromise on quality. They also give advisory services and employ state of the art equipment to diagnose phone issues before repairs. (Chuks Onyekachi Anitche)

• Fantastic, professional service…. The way they handled me from start t end only a professional can do that….good quality work…of anyone wants to fix their phone, Fixtel is the right place. Good Job (Sagar Pardeshi)

A comment like this makes me proud of my hustle and it makes me know that we at Fixtel are giving value to the world.

Here is why I wrote the article - Many people have fallen victim to bad phone repair in Nigeria. This ought not to be so especially in a place like Lagos.

PhonesBroken Screen? Urgent Action To Take Now by Samoginni(op): 11:14pm On Jun 08, 2020
Breaking your phone screen can be a real pain. But the truth is, most people have been victims of a broken screen. According to a Sony Ericsson, a smartphone screen breaks every two seconds. This means that about 8 people's phone screen has been broken while tying this.

Are you tired of bad and expensive phone repairs?

Have you ever tried to get your phone broken screen fixed and it cost you more than you bargained for? Or you wasted money trying to get the broken screen replaced only for you to later discover that the replaced screen was fake?

Well, you are not alone. Most Nigerians have fallen victims of bad phone repair.

Before I continue, I would like to share my personal experience with a phone engineer in computer village.

My name is Oluwatosin Oginni. And like many Nigerians, I hustle hard to make my money. I currently make my living by selling on Facebook and Instagram. My vision and aim are to raise enough money by selling to enable me to rent a place and move to better accommodation.
Surviving alone in Nigeria is not easy, talk more of trying to feed my family (three children and one wife).

Due to the nature of my occupation, I am always on the internet and always in need of my smartphone.

The incident

On the 21st of December 2019, something happened that changed my life forever. This was the day I broke my iPhone 8 smartphone screen.

You see to others, this is not a big deal. But to me it is. If I don’t get the phone fixed fast, I and my family would starve to death. To me, repairing my smartphone is a top priority.

But there is something about me you should know: I budget a lot. Due to the nature of my profession, I need to ensure that there is stock available when a customer makes a request. So before I buy any goods, I remove the amount of money that I and my family would need to survive pending the time I sell the new incoming stock.

The disadvantage of this is that there is no cash available for unforeseen expenses.

When my phone screen broke, I had only N106,000 in my account. The purpose of the money was to pay my kids school fees in January. Breaking my smartphone means that I would need to divert some of the money to repair the phone.
Imagine the agony that comes with spending so much money on something that you did not budget for. But I have no choice.
6th of January 2020, I decided to go get my phone fixed in computer village.

You might be wondering why I choose computer village. Well, there is a saying “Any smartphone that cannot be fixed in computer village cannot be fixed anywhere else”.

When I got to computer village, I felt insecure. I kept touching my pocket every second to ensure that my money and wallet were still intact. After 15min, I finally entered a small dark shop. The engineer promised to repair my phone at a very cheap price. He also promised me that the replaced screen would be of good quality. But there was a price to pay for it. He charged my N45, 000. To me, that was a small price to pay. All I wanted was to get back online.
After waiting for 1hour 28min, I finally got my iPhone back. I began smiling and thanking the engineer for his help and support.

Long story short, when I got back home, I noticed that the new screen was not properly working. It was not responding to touch command and it was also blinking. I tried to manage it but it became worse as the minute went by.
Two days later, I went back to the engineer that fixed the screen for me. On getting to the shop, I had to wait for 82 min before I could see the engineer. When I explained what had happened, the engineer stated that I needed to change my phone screen again. According to him, it was either I sat down on the phone or the phone fell down. This response made me get angry and I walked out of the shop

Continue to read if you want to know how I finally got the original iPhone 8 screen for just N25,000.

Why am I sharing this experience with you?

We have all had the sinking feeling of watching our phone screen brake- and then watch our bank balance plummet after taking it for repair in Nigeria. What makes this experience worse is that we spend lots of money to repair a smartphone only for us to be given fake parts by the engineers we suppose to trust. To me, this can be avoided if the right decision is made fast and early.

Let me use myself as an example, assuming I had this secret am about to share with you before I repaired my phone screen in computer village, I could have saved the N50,000 that was spent at the first place.
The purpose of sharing my experience with you is to ensure that you don’t make the same mistake I made. It is to also guide you to a place where you can get your phone fixed at a cheap price and you are sure that the replaced screen is original.
What I learned over the past few weeks is that I am not alone. I was having a chat with my close friend who stated that he had a component of his smartphone swapped while he took it for repair at a shop in Saka Tinubu.
If you talk to Nigerians, most of us have all had bad experiences trying to get our phone fixed. These experiences could lead to loss of information, time, and money.

Solution: how to get an affordable repair in Lagos

The solution to this entire problem is taking your smartphone to fixtel. I am sure you are surprised by the solution. You are thinking, what makes this place different and better. I taught the same also when I heard about them.

My experience repairing the phone

When I took my smartphone to Fixtel, I had doubts about using their services. I just decided to give them a try and see what their response would be like. When I entered their office, I was greeted by a friendly receptionist who directed me to engineer Joseph.

I never felt more secure in my life. The environment was conducive, clean, and relaxing. I immediately taught the charges.

I am sure you would be laughing at me, but you cannot blame me. You see, we Nigerians are used to hardship so when we see a little comfort, we immediately assume that it would be expensive.

After discussing with Joseph, he collected the phone and ran a full diagnosis on the phone. He immediately told me that the replaced screen was fake and I would need to replace it.

How much would it cost me, I asked

N25, 000 he replied.

I was shocked.

I immediately told him that the screen he wanted to give me was fake.

He responded by telling me that they give a 3-month warranty on any part that is replaced. To me, this was too good to be true. I had just spent N40, 000 to replace the same screen 3 weeks ago.

After much contemplation, I decided to give Fixtel a try.

The screen was replaced within 25min. I was really scared that it was also going to have the same problem, so I decided to check the screen before leaving the premises.

Joseph noticed that I was anxious; he immediately gave me a chair to sit down. He asked to check and confirm that the replaced screen was in good shape. He also stated that if I noticed an issue with the screen within the next 3 months, I should bring it back. He would replace it at no extra cost.

What you need to know
