Obinna Chima writes on the significant progress recorded in rice production in Nigeria

From Nigeria being the world’s second largest rice importer years back, the narrative appears to have changed as the country continues to take steps to ramp up domestic production.

According to a recent report, Nigeria has overtaken Egypt as the largest rice producer in Africa. The Director-General, Africa Rice Center, Benin Republic, Dr Harold Roy-Macauley, who disclosed this, said Nigeria is now the largest rice producer at four million tonnes a year. Egypt was producing 4.3 tonnes annually but the country’s production had reduced by almost 40 per cent this year. Africa produces an average of 14.6 million tonnes of rough rice annually, he explained.

Indeed, the remarkable achievement recorded by the country in the area of rice production, as disclosed by Roy-Macauley, was the outcome of robust collaboration between the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, that focused on areas in the agriculture sector where the country has comparative advantage, in their quest to drastically reduce the country’s huge import bill.
A report by Lagos-based CSL Stockbrokers Limited showed that the central bank and the federal government have been making substantial efforts to encourage domestic cultivation of rice and to completely eliminate imports using incentives such as subsidised loans, cheap fertilisers, free farm land, and tax rebates.

Presently, the CBN has restricted importers of 43 items, which included rice, from accessing dollars from the interbank market and bureaux de change. Also, other fiscal policies are making it increasingly unfavorable for the importation of rice. Rice imports through land borders are restricted, while imports that come in through the ports attract sizeable import duties and levies.

Has been estimated that nigeria economy will take a new turn next year (2020) due to the new sectors that is springin up....it is refreshing to know that we are gradually shift from an oil based economy to a properly diversified economy. ....once they can finish harnessing all our resources into new sector (by 2022) don't be surprised that we can be growing with at least 11% gdp growth... I want to see a nigeria whose economy is not progressing on oil prices. .....my main focus is that manufacturing sector... I can't wait for them to complete the ongoing infastructure in that sector so that every country on the continent of africa and also outside africa will have a large influx of made in nigeria goods.....go and check the pattern from trade zone,to rail lines, dry inland port, to the deepest of seaport (both public and private ) ,to industrial zone and airport for transporting of goods (I am talking about up to 17 new international airport under construction )..... Nay! I have been here long enough to know South Africans here are arrogant, pompous, rude, annoying and provoking.

Ask anyone here, I didn't engage South Africans and Ghanaians on this thread despite their attacks because of my self respect for them but South Africans have crossed the line way to far and I think it is high time they are put in their place. Ghana, I can still overlook and tolerate.

In addition, I noticed South Africans are novice or they have been brainwashed to think they are the number one achievers in black Africa. Now, that is what I call delusion of the highest order.

It maybe because nigeria know less about other africans.....here in Nigeria our schools would never mention anything africa to you except you are studying map in geography classes and most time they stick to west africa map......it was around when I was writing my WAEC exam I knew about ghana and the rest african countries you would literally see the questions set for various west african countries. ..and we would complain saying WAEC has the habit of favouring other west african countries with simpler questions over us
