Mohammud Modibbo, who has died at the age of 83, was believed to be the oldest school pupil in Nigeria.

He started primary school in his mid-seventies, and had recently begun secondary school in the northern city of Kano.

He was unable to go to school as a child because he worked as a trader, travelling from place to place.

"He was easygoing and very jovial," Abdulkarim Ibrahim, a teacher at his school, told the BBC Hausa Service.
