The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned one Jamilu Yunusa before Justice Yahaya Galadanci of the Kano State High Court on a seven count charge of Conspiracy and Obtaining by False Pretense.
The accused person alongside two others, Inuwa Abdu and Habibu Inuwa who are still at large allegedly connived and defrauded the complainants to the tune of N1,520,000 (One Million, Five Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira ) by claiming that he had a contract with Dantata and Sawoe for the supply of pipes to the company. He convinced his victims by promising to share the contract profit with them. However, investigation by the EFCC revealed that the accused person never had a contract with Dantata and Sawoe.

One of the charge read “that Jamilu Yunusa, Inuwa Abdu (at large) and Habibu Inuwa (at large) sometime in 2015 in Kano within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court conspired among yourselves to do an illegal act to wit: obtaining by false pretense the sum of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira Only) from Nuhu Abubakar through Skye Bank account belonging to Inuwa Abdu with account number 3042263847 which was done pursuance to the said agreement and thereby committed an offense contrary to section ( of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act”.

After listening to the charge, the accused person pleaded not guilty.

Prosecution counsel Douglas Ijah Gift asked the court for a trial date in view of the plea of the accused person.

Counsel for the defendant Amina Umar Garba applied orally that the accused person be admitted to bail.

The matter has been adjourned till January 5, 2017 for hearing of bail application. The accused person was remanded in prison custody.

A 15 year old girl from Gajra village in western Nepal’s Achham district has died from smoke inhalation after she was separated from her community because she was menstruating and left to sleep in a menstruation hut in Nepal.

“Chhaupadi” which is the name given to the menstruation hut, is a practice in which women are banished during menstruation in Western Nepal.

During Chhaupadi, a practice that dates back hundreds of years ago, girls are kept in small huts with no doors,poor sanitation and poor ventilation and are forbidden from touching other people, livestock, fruits and plants.

According to Achham district police inspector, Badri Prasad Dhakal, 10 other girls have died in the lst 9 years from the isolation and exposure to environmental factors when left in the menstruation hut while practicing Chhaupadi.

“Deaths are usually caused by smoke inhalation, snake bites (and) lack of basic health care during menstruation,” Badri Prasad said.

”Girls are not allowed to drink milk or eat milk products and their access to water taps and wells is limited.

“Some in the Far West still believe that a God or Goddess may be angered if the practice is violated, which could result in a shorter life, the death of livestock or destruction of crops,”

However, a close look at 2016, and its activities could help speculate on the ministers that might be affected. Below is a list based on speculations:

1. Rotimi Amaechi

The minister of transport, Rotimi Amaechi has been in the news for negative reasons in 2016. His continuous grouse with Nyesom Wike the former governor of Rivers state has made many question his competence.

Worse still, he has been accused of corruption. He might be one of those to go in 2017.

2. Solomon Dalung

It is difficult to know where to begin with Solomon Dalung the minister of youth and sports development, from the Olympics debacle which was a shame to the entire Nigerian government. To the shabby way the Nigerian Falcons were handled despite winning their last tournament.

3. Kemi Adeosun

The minister of finance, Kemi Adeosun is well read, speaks brilliantly and seems to know what she is about. Yet, under her the Nigerian economy has sunk into a recession.

She has made promises and outlined plans, yet will this be enough to save her in 2017 as the economy continues to crumble?

4. Babatunde Raji Fashola

When Babatunde Fashola was governor of Lagos state, he performed brilliantly as many agree. So when he was to be appointed minister, many were glad.

5. James Ocholi

The former minister of labour, James Ocholi, lost his life in an accident that claimed the life of some other family members and President Buhari will use this opportunity to make a much needed change.

6.Amina J. Mohammed

The minister of environment has been stellar in her department, but there are reports of her unhappinness with the current Nigerian government.

On Thursday, December 15, 2016, the UN Secretary-General-designate Antonio Guterres announced that he will appoint her as his Deputy Secretary-General. She might likely leave j=her post in 2017 too.

7. Aisha Al-Hassan

Mama Taraba as she is popularly called is well liked, she almost made history as a Nigerian female governor, during the elections.

However, ill-health has plagued her constantly, and after she collapsed while visiting IDPs, she has been absent. She might be asked to leave to take proper care of her health in 2017.

As 2017, draws closer, Nigerians hope for a better performance from all ministers, and it will be interesting to see who will be reshuffled or removed by the president in the new year.

Governor Nyesom Wike of River state has been accused of allegedly trying to divert the attention of Nigerians from the leaked audio tape where he purportedly threatened to kill an INEC official for not doing his bidding in the December 10 Rivers re-run election.

A group, the Integrity Youths Alliance (IYA), which made the allegation against Wike on Tuesday, December 20 in Port Harcourt also claimed the governor’s paid agents were already spreading smear campaigns against the transportation minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, all in a bid to divert attention from the leaked tape

The Nation reports that the secretary-general of the IYA, Danjuma Lamido, urged Wike to own up to the threat to kill officials of the INEC.

The group said: “Since an online news platform, Sahara Reporters, exposed Governor Nyesom Wike, he has been looking for ways to divert the attention of Nigerians and the international community from his threat to kill INEC officials.

“We are aware that Governor Wike’s paid agents have taken over the social media to blackmail the Transportation Minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, and divert the attention of the security agencies from probing the leaked audio tape.”

The group also urged security agencies to investigate the killings in Rivers state during the legislative poll and bring the culprits to book. It said this would serve as a deterrent to others.

Governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom has sympathized with the family of his staff, Mrs. Philomena Mwarga Musa, who died in Uyo church collapse and also employed her first daughter.

Mr Ortom who paid a condolence visit to the deceased family in North Bank, Makurdi, Benue state stated that the collapse of the church was unfortunate.

In a condolence letter to the family of the deceased, he said,

“I was deeply saddened by the news of the collapse of the uncompleted church building which left dozens dead and scores injured throwing the state and entire nation into mourning,” the Governor Stated. Be assured that the people of Benue State stand with you in this trying moment.”

He described the late Mrs. Philomena as a dedicated staff who added value to service and stated that Miss Iveren Agbor, graduate of Theatre Arts at the Benue State University, first daughter of the deceased be employed to fill the gap the death of her mother has created

The Akwa Ibom state government has ruled out holding a mass burial for victims of last Saturday's collapse of the Reigners Bible Church in Uyo, the state capital. Speaking to newsmen at a press conference in the government house, the state commissioner for Health, Dominic Ukpong, said the government will release the corpses of the victims to their families once the police concludes its investigation. Ukpong also disclosed that only 26 people died in the incident ...

“Government has no intention to do mass burial for the dead victims. The corpses will all be released as soon as the police conclude its investigation. It is our responsibility to ensure that we release these bodies to members of their families. 26 total deaths were recorded (reconciling three); total in-patients are 168 and total out-patients are 50. Photos of the young and beautiful co-pilot who lost her life in the fated plane crash that took the lives of members of the Brazilian football team, Chapecoense has left many grieving.

Sisy Arias, who was on her first flight as a civilian co-pilot, was speaking moments before the jet took off from Bolivia, Dailymail reported.

Sitting in the cockpit of the plane, the 29-year-old, who is well known as a model in Colombia, told of her pride at transporting the Brazilian football team, Chapecoense to their Copa Sudamericana final in Medellin.

But just hours later, the flight ended in tragedy when the plane smashed into a mountainside killing 71 on board and leaving just six survivors.

Explaining how she stole the man’s monthly salary, the state prosecutor, Ms Magret Takawira said the two met at a sports bar in the city centre and struck a deal to spend the night at Chindove’s house.
“At around midnight, the complainant met the accused person at Extreme Sports Bar. They agreed to spend a night together and proceeded to the complainant’s place of residence in Mpopoma,” said Ms Takawira.

According to Takawira, while Mr Chindove was still asleep, the prostitute woke up around 4 am and stole his wallet containing a driver’s licence, defensive driver’s licence, car keys and $450. She also took a Samsung Galaxy Tablet 3. But Sibanda told Magistrate Ndebele that she only saw $300 (N144,000) in the wallet and should not be held accountable for the difference.

The magistrate asked about the amount of money that she was supposed to be paid for her services, drawing laughter from the gallery.

“Why did you steal from your client? Don’t you realise that if you steal from clients you’re destroying your client base? You said you had charged him $20 for the night, how then can you explain stealing over a thousand dollars worth of property from him? Did he do more rounds than you had initially agreed on, or you didn’t like his performance?” asked Mr Ndebele.
Sibanda said she thought Mr Chindove would refuse to pay and decided to take the money and leave. The total value of the stolen property was at $1 090 and only $790 was recovered.
