As anger trails NCC directive to telcos to hike tariff

Nigerians have reacted angrily to the recent directive by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to telecom operators to increase the tariff for data services, with several of them calling on the National Assembly to intervene in the matter.

In reaction to the NCC directive, MTN has started sending out bulk messages to its subscribers alerting them of the planned increase. The text message read: “Dear customer, please be informed that from 1st Dec, some MTN data tariffs will be increased to reflect the new rates set by the NCC to operators. Thank you.”

Sources indicate that the new rate could see subscribers of MTN, GLO, AIRTEL & Etisalat paying as much as N1000 for 500 megabytes instead of the 1 gigabyte, 1.5 gigabytes or 2 gigabytes they currently get, depending on the network.

There could be charges for other telecom services in the country in order to meet the reported proposition by Godwin Emefiele, the Central Bank Governor, for a tax from mobile phone users in the country as part of efforts to address the economic recession.


Many subscribers who reacted to the issue via their twitter handles wondered why NCC would seek to bring more hardship on Nigerians who are battling to survive the economic recession. They called on Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to stop the draconian directive by NCC.


The Senate President in a short message on his Twitter handle has promised that the Senate would intervene.

Senator Shehu Sani was among those who condemned the planned increase. “At a time telecom companies are still making billions in profits despite the recession, increasing tariff on data services is simply about extorting more from the people for data after paying more for electricity,” Senator Sani wrote.


Henry Ezeanya wrote: “can you people kindly look into the NCC's hike in data charges. Market force bringing prices down, but NCC wants it up..”

Seyi Benz: “they want to gag us by increasing tariff so we can't come online n harangue them on bad governance. It's a ploy.”

The Egypt Football Association has cancelled its proposed friendly match with the Super Eagles of Nigeria in January, following alleged disagreement with the Nigerian authorities on match expenses.

The Egypt FA, it was gathered, are not willing to bear all the expenses for the game as was demanded by Nigeria and have even gone ahead to fix another game with Tunisia about the same time.

The friendly between Egypt and Nigeria was billed to be played on January 9 in Dubai to prepare the Pharaohs for the AFCON in Gabon.

It has now been revealed that the Egypt vs Nigeria clash may have fallen through because the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are demanding their Egyptian counterparts bear their entire expenses and also because the Super Eagles will not be at full strength for this match.

“It has not yet been officially confirmed but it is looking very likely that the friendly against Egypt in Dubai in January will no longer hold,” a top official informed.

Reacting to the rumours yesterday, the NFF insisted that it is still committed to January date for the friendly match, stating that it has not been officially community by the Egypt FA.

“We have not received any message to that effect as at today (Sunday) from the Egypt FA. I don’t know anything about that”, stated the General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi.

The newspapers for Monday, November 28, focus on an alleged plot by President Buhari to replace Osinbajo with Kalu and the aftermath of Akeredolu’s election victory in Ondo.

The Point newspaper reports that the camp of President Muhammadu Buhari may be planning to replace vice president Yemi Osinbajo with a politician from the southeast ahead of the 2019 elections.

The paper reports that the presidency plans to woo a former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu, as a possible replacement for Osinbajo in the next general elections so as to pacify the southeast.

According to The point, the Buhari camp, sensing a potential loss of support and electoral votes from the south west, in the event of the Tinubu forces pulling out, is tinkering with options to win over the south east and perhaps south south blocs.

“With many gladiators, who joined forces to see APC through to victory during the last elections already fingered in the movement to form a new mega party, there is intense calculation being done to get a crowd-puller from the South East geo-political zone.

This is to garner substantial votes from the region to shore up what may be lost should the South West go with Tinubu,” one of the sources said.

About 29, 581 Nigerians who fled their communities in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa as result of insurgent activities to Republic of Niger and Cameroun have voluntarily returned last year, this is contained in a published report of humanitarian relief intervention by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) which was released recently. Read below...

The report says 13,046 Nigerian returnees from Niger Republic in May, 2015 and were received in Geidam, Yobe State while Between April and December, 2015 NEMA received about 16,595 Nigerians that have voluntarily returned from Cameroon through the Sahuda border crossing area near Mubi, Adamawa State.

"Some of the Nigerians that fled to Neighbouring countries (Niger, Chad and Cameroun) were provided with humanitarian relief support by the Federal Government of Nigeria through NEMA to alleviate their suffering. The displaced Nigerians have also received humanitarian supports from the host governments, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the host communities and Nigerian citizens living in the three host countries" the report says.

There are presently 20,804 displaced Nigerians living the Republic of Chad, 80,709 in the Republic of Cameroun and 138,321 in the Republic in Niger.

It noted that the agency adopted a monthly Humanitarian Coordination Meeting; a forum consists of relevant Federal government Agencies, UN Systems and International Non-Government Organizations (INGOs) undertakes analysis of causes of humanitarian situations, conducting of need assessments, and identification of priorities and provision of humanitarian interventions based on their respective mandates. The system operates through different sectors lead by national MDAs and co-lead by UN Agencies.


The report added that due to the successes recorded by the Nigerian Military with the support of Multi-National Joint Military Task Force (JTF) in the fight against Boko Haram insurgents, the humanitarian dashboard is fast changing. The focus is gradually shifting towards Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Resettlement, Recovery and dignified return of IDPs back home while process for the return of Nigerian refugees from neighboring countries is equally on-going.

"NEMA will continue to support and work towards bridging the identified gaps in humanitarian response through enhanced coordination, capacity building and strengthening of collaboration with the affected States and relevant stakeholders including line MDAs, local and international response organizations and the UN system". the report says.

The singer who has a new single “Fallen in love” in an interview with theNET quashed any notion that she is an artiste under Flavour’s 2nite Music Group.

The speculation was that she is now a member of 2nite Music Group as the record label logo was displayed in the video of her latest song. She vehemently debunked any of such speculations.

The horrific incident happened last Saturday morning at Mile 2 Junction, Lagos. we earlier reported that the young woman’s legs were crushed when a container fell on her as she was about to board a motorcycle.

People came to her rescue but couldn’t lift the container as it had heavy load inside. They reportedly cut off both legs and rushed her to the hospital.

Plans are underway by the Delta State government to establish 40 fishponds in Mbiri community including other communities within Ika North-East Local Council of the state in its bid to provide employment.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Austin Chikezie, who confirmed this in Asaba, disclosed that the communities have donated five hectares of land for the cluster fish farming slated to commence next week.

He said that to ensure a successful fish farming aimed at creating employment for the youths in the areas, the state government had directed all the youths to form co-operative societies for fish farming adding, “we are happy with the corporative attitude of the community towards actualizing this government objective.”

In a letter written and signed by the Obi of the community, Obi Ifeanyi chukwu Alekwe II (JP) and addressed to the Delta State Commissioner for Agriculture, the monarch lauded the state government for the initiative.

He added: “We wish to affirm that the said five hectares of land required for the establishment of the fish cluster farm is readily available in the community for your accessibility, as this gesture will go a long way in creating jobs for the youths in Mbiri, Ika North East Local Government Area and Delta State at large.”

Meanwhile, the Delta State government has proposed a capital vote for its interventionist agency, the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) for the fiscal year 2017.

The amount is to enable it deliver on its mandate of delivering quality services, particularly infrastructure to its mandate oil-bearing communities.

A woman and two men believed to be members of a kidnapping syndicate, were apprehended in Calabar, Cross Rivers state Wednesday. According to facebook user, Ifere Paul, who shared the story, the suspects, said to be from Delta and Enugu State, storm Calabar to kidnap people. Two prostitutes reportedly started a fire at their residence in Liberia camp, Buduburam, Ghana, after a fight broke out between them while arguing over a customer. According to Adom News reports, the argument started over which of the two of them was the ‘rightful owner’ of the customer’s penis (wahala dey o).

The incident which occurred about 4am on Monday, November 21, started when a cigarette which was lit by one of the fighting prostitutes, set the bed on fire which spread very quickly, setting the house ablaze.

Here’s what happened according to an eyewitness: “At dawn, I saw two prostitutes fighting over a customer. Each of them was claiming ownership of his manhood. During the fight, one of them left the cigarette on a bed sheet that ignited the fire.”

The fire was eventually brought under control by men of the fire service, while the prostitutes who started the fire have reportedly been on the run since then.

The development is a set back to effort of the newly appointed Caretaker Committee Chairman, a renowned Lawyer, Osi Olisah and the government’s Amnesty Programme to restore peace in the volatile ONELGA.
Yesterday, notorious and heavily armed group known as Squanta Force, one of the groups which has refused to accept the amnesty offer of the state government, attacked a multinational company killing three Civil Defence officers and left four others with life-threatening bullet injuries.

According to Daily Post, the group, said to be camped near an oil-well in the creek of Obiafo in Ndoni part of ONELGA, and led by one Ave-Boy engaged the helpless Civil Defence officers who were caught napping.

A picture of a notice pasted on the wall of the scene of the attack indicates that Squanta Force are members of aggrieved youths from ONELGA.

An army official, civil defense officers and a civilian have been reportedly killed by cultists in Rivers state.
In the same vein, another group of unknown gunmen shot and killed a military officer and a civilian at a round about junction also in Ndoni, ONELGA in Rivers state.

It was gathered that the gunmen attacked two stranded soldiers who were battling with fixing their car at the round about.

Two civilians who were helping the officers to fix their car were caught in the cross fire which led to the death of the Officer and the civilian.
The other soldier and the civilian escaped with gun wounds and are currently being treated in an undisclosed hospital.
Cult war 3 The reason for the attack on the military men is unknown. Both the military and the Civil Defence are yet to make any official statement.

In the meantime, in a bid to further curb the spate of violence in the area, the CTC Chairman, Olisah has announced ban on the use of motorcycles popularly called Okada in ONELGA from 6pm to 6am.
The Chairman said the ban which takes effect immediately, will be sustained until further notice.

A report by The Guardian has revealed that over 2,000 Nigerians are languishing in various Chinese prisons.


According to a prison note smuggled out of Dong-guan prison in China by a source, the Nigerians are going through hell. A fresh deportee from China, who had a brief stint in the Dong-guan Prison and managed to hide dozens of prison notes scribbled on tissue papers in his anus, was quoted as saying the prison facility alone where he was held for over three months had more than 2,000 Nigerians detained for various reasons, mostly drug-related.

According to him, many Nigerians have been incapacitated owing to the daily torture meted out to them by prison officials, while a lot more are on death row waiting for the hangman.

His words: “One of the most commonly forms of torture is the shocking treatment where inmates are given continuous shocking from an electric device for up to two hours.

“When going through this procedure, most of us urinate and defecate on our pants. Some people, who have spent some time there have developed brain damage or some form of mental problems.” Excerpts of the letter read: “Dear fellow citizens of Nigeria, this is the voice of your compatriots suffering in chinese prison. We have been looking for an opportunity to make our plights known to the public, but God is so kind, one of us is being released now.

This is why we are using him as our contact to the outside world. “Many of us have a very heavy sentences of death and life imprisonment. Some of us have spent over 15 years in prison. We want our home government to come to our aid. We are being treated like animals, mostly Nigerians and other Africans.

“We are tortured daily with electric device. The worst part is that it is our fellow prisoners officials use to carry out this torture. When we ask why they do this to us, they say it is because we are blacks, our government don’t care for us and our government can’t do anything to them.

“The only reason many of us have not committed suicide is the hope of being transferred some day to our home country. Some countries such as Ethopia, Senegal, Iran, Jordan, Colombia and Yemen have started taking their citizens back home and we believe the Nigerian embassy is fully aware of our plights but has refused to take any action.

“We are made to work long hours in factory every day without any salary being paid to us. Yet, we are not well-fed. The only thing left for them to do is to exterminate us or put us in the gas chamber just as the Nazis did to the Jewish people.”

As at 2013, an online report on Dong-guan’s prison claimed that of the 5,000 inmates in the jail on Xinzhou Island in Dong-guan’s Shijie Village, there are about 1,500 foreign nationals from 53 countries. Most of them are there for drug-related crimes. According to another news report on the Dong-guan prison, electrocution, beatings and suicide are part of everyday life. Danny Cancian, a New Zealand national, who was released from the jail last year, was quoted in an article as saying for the four years he spent locked up in ithe prison, he did not see the sun or the stars. “There were people hanging themselves every week. They had to take all the wire clothe lines out of the cells,” he said.

A commercial bus driver identified as Saminu Bara'u popularly known as Danlami was allegedly killed by a trigger-happy police officer in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State on Tuesday November 15th. Facebook user who shared the story, calling for justice, wrote;

"The incidence occurred around 8pm of Tuesday 15th November 2016 while the victim was seated outside his residence in Maraban Jos when a team of police stormed the area in the name of patrol. Having fractured his leg and being innocent, Danlami remain seated as the police arrived.

One Police Officer nicknamed KURA (literarilly mean Hyena) ordered Danlami to stand up and run before he shoots him, which he calmly replied that he cannot run because his leg is fractured displaying his crutches. Unfortunately for Danlami, the barbaric KURA shot him to dead (the pic). Immediately after he shot Danlami, angry youths descended on KURA and were about to take jungle justice on him.

It took the intervention of some respected elders and a human right activist (name with-held) to rescue him. The case has since been filed at Unguwan Sunusi Police Station and we learnt that KURA was transferred to State CID. Our fear is the usual, we don't want the case dead at arrival just because a Police Officer involved. Let us stand up for justice! Let us think of his wife and 3 kids! The State Government should do something!! The IGP should ensure KURA is brought to book!!! Keep sharing until justice is done. All we want is #Justice4Danlami......... May his soul rest in peace.
