That's huge, it means they earn more than some lectures but I doubt if they will ever have time to do other things outside school stuff.

Not all private schools operate that way, if you reside in Lagos and you really want to teach, go for the big private schools like Atlantic Hall, American International School, Olashore International School etc.

Don't think it is impossible to get into such schools without connection. Sometimes an unsolicited application will land you the job, but your cover letter and CV need to be really tight. A lady I know landed a job in one of such schools through an unsolicited application.
