The Source by James A. Michener |
@blank: My comments were for those who think that marriage is solely for procreation. While I agree that having children in the context of marriage is the optimal situation, and better for societal structure, I don't think the title of "bastard" still has much weight, beyond stigma. Do children born out of wedlock still face insurmountable hurdles? I doubt. But not to veer too far off topic, marriage is about the couple primarily, and the children are an addition blessing. |
Why do so many pple still insist that marriage is the only way by which children are born? All you need for that is unprotected sex, at the right time of the month, and BUYA! And for those who want to approach it from a biblical standpoint, remember that God created Eve because Adam realized that he was lonely, not because God was trying to get "the numbers up". (But really, who still believes in a concrete way that God goes around, dropping children into wombs like Santa Claus giving gifts. Will you accept that logic when your young sister/niece/daughter comes home pregnant and says "I don't know what happened! I was washing cloths, and then all of sudden, GBAM!) LOL! |
Once again, hailings to Evil Brain for pointing out the underlying message in the Sodom and Gomorrah story. For all the preachers who have so much to say about homosexuals, what does Jesus says? Anything from the 4 gospels will suffice. |
Ekom do-o! I'd like to know how well attended are the Akwa Ibom State Nat'l conventions in the U.S.? I've recently learned about the upcoming one in Baltimore, MD, but know very few ppl from NY who are attending? Anyone care to share past experiences? |
This a enlightening topic, I hope that more folks will share their experiences. I grew up in the States, and of late have been entertaining the idea of marrying a Nigerian lady. But all the "extra" stuff involved (like traditional marriage, bride price, etc) all seem a little daunting. Or maybe I've just been misinformed, Carry on, |
In response to the OP, yes we should, but with conditions. We should begin to reintroduce it, and "modernize" it. I used to be of the opinion that we should abandon all that nonsense, after all where were these gods and religion when the European came with his god and religion and laid waste to Africa (a god which they adopted from the Semites, by the way). As someone commented earlier, as Christianity and Islam spread, the local pple adopted and adapted it to their culture. Note: The blockbuster movie remake "Clash of Titans" is all about pre-Christian dieties that the Europeans worshipped and idolized. But Shango and Yemoja are evil? So let's bring these discussions of ancient religions out in the open, so that they can be updated and streamlined. |
I have a younger cousin in Naija that wants to come to the States for tertiary education. I'm not sure he's really that strong academically, as he had some problems with remedial classes @ FUTO. But family is really getting on me to help him cross, because in the their minds, when you come the US, everything magically becomes better. So I want to give him a chance. Please I need advice on the general requirements for Nigerian students seeking post secondary education in the US (or UK). In other words, what should he start doing on his end? |
So any war fought in pre colonial time was just war for the sake of war? Please, People have always killed each other in the name of "God" and "the gods". The European and Arab just gave it some restructuring. If there was no war in africa before the white man came then who were people like Shango fighting? Chickens?LOL, abi o. |
I'm still stuck on the part about seeing the ex for months "before she realised she had a fiancee". ![]() |
I've just purchased my2cents' book, because its sounds like the type of info that I've been curious about. I'm an Ibibio man, who grew up between Lagos and Warri. And I don't recall much being taught about our traditional religions, because its "archaic", or "evil". So I look forward to reading this, and I'll probably go on to get the Who are the Ibibio book. |
I'm glad to see James Michner here; I read " The Source" about 15 years ago, and have recently purchased a copy. Very deep and thought provoking book, even though its fiction. Also recently read "The Wolves" by H H Kirst. (another one of the ol books that I found dusty in an uncle's home, 10-15 years ago) |
It depends on how much you're "adapting": if all you're going to do is interchange "my girl" for "my God" (for example), then don't do that disservice to your brethren. However, if you're taking advantage of a catchy hook like "Jesus Walks", and proceed to build edifying verses, then continue to be a blessing. There are many believers who go to extremes in this music issue: some will even tell you that there is no NT account of Jesus and the apostles using instruments to worship God, so therefore its not allowed. Or even that the first humans, according to biblical accounts, to develop instruments were descendants of Cain. |
