Education / Erc Calls For Reversal Of Admission Screening Exercise Fee In Lasu by sanjex212: 10:05pm On Jun 14, 2016 |
It is no news that the authorities of Lagos State
University (LASU) have called for application
from qualified applicants for her 2016/2017
admission.
In the same vein, the University authorities
have also increased the admission screening
exercise fee by over 100% from N2,300 to
N5,000 this year. Also the University authorities
have raised the UTME cut off mark for
eligibility to sit for the admission screening
exercise to 190 over and above the 180
proposed by the Joint Admission and
Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Having examined these two developments and
their implication, the Education Rights
Campaign (ERC) finds that the over 100 percent
increment in admission screening exercise fees
to be unjust, exploitative and anti-poor. We are
also concerned about the negative implication
the 190 UTME score set by LASU for eligibility
to sit for its admission screening exercise would
have for applicants many of whom are from
poor working class homes.
OUR ARGUMENTS:
1. We find it difficult to reconcile the cost
of conducting admission screening
exercise in a university like the Lagos
State University with the amount levied
on each applicant. More so, considering
the teeming population of applicants the
University will get and the turn over
that would be realized, one can only
conclude that the increment is a
deliberate attempt to exploit the
applicants all in the name of increasing
the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)
of the University. More so, increasing
admission screening fee at this period of
economic downturn when many
working class families are going through
enormous hardship is rather insensitive.
The ERC also see this increment as one
that does not have the interest of the
applicants at heart and a deliberate
attempt to take education away from the
reach of the poor masses.
2. On the increase of the cut off mark, no
doubt we acknowledge that it is
necessary for the Lagos State University
to maintain its high standard of
scholarship by ensuring that only the
best gain admission. However we
believe that this cannot be achieved
simply by raising the cut off mark. We
recall that when Universities pushed for
the creation of the Post-UTME test some
years ago, the argument was that JAMB
scores were no more reliable for
assessing applicants competence given
the enormous malpractice that often
characterize UTME every year, therefore
Universities needed their own separate
screening in the form of the Post-UTME
test. Logically therefore, raising the
UTME cut off mark for eligibility to
apply for admission into LASU would
not in any away guarantee that the best
would gain admission. Rather, it would
only ensure that many applicants who
scored marks lower than 190 not
because they were not good enough but
due to the malpractice that still
characterize UTME are unable to have a
fair shot at admission.
OUR POSITION
Having put forward the arguments above, we
hereby demand the following:
1. The University management should
reverse the admission screening exercise
fee in the best interest of applicants
majority of whom are from poor working
class background.
2. We hereby urge the University
management to kindly allow all qualified
applicants with 180 UTME score and above
to apply for the admission screening
exercise.
3. We believe the Lagos State University
management team ably led by Prof. Lanre
Fagbohun is a student-loving team. We will
therefore be enormously grateful if the
management can consider our arguments
and positions and do the needful to
address all of these issues.
At the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), we
campaign for a free, credible and qualitative
education at all levels of the educational
system.

Politics / I'm Toyin Saraki's Private Investigator - Malaye by sanjex212: 9:10am On Aug 01, 2015 |
The Chairman, Senate Adhoc Committee on Media and
Publicity, Mr. Dino Melaye, has defended his open support
for Mrs. Toyin Saraki, wife of the Senate President, when
she honoured an invitation of the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission.
The Senator, representing Kogi West in the National
Assembly, said he had no regrets joining Saraki at the EFCC
office.
Melaye said he went to the EFCC office “as a private
investigator and an anti-corruption crusader,” to find out the
extent of culpability of his “sister and friend” since she was
not told the content of the petition against her.
He said he was arrested 14 times in one year by the
administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan because
of his commitment to seeing a better Nigeria
He said, “The invitation of Mrs. Toyin Saraki by the EFCC,
however, is not a criminal indictment. I will not abandon my
friend because of (a) mere EFCC invitation.
“I also went there as a private investigator and an anti-
corruption crusader to find out the extent of culpability of
my sister and friend since she was not told the content of
the petition against her before her appearance before the
EFCC.”
Melaye, in a statement entitled, ‘Stand up for what you
believe in regardless of the popularity or acceptance of your
belief,’ which was obtained by Saturday PUNCH in Abuja,
challenged anyone to controvert his claim that he had never
taken any government contract, be it at the local, state or
federal level.
He said, “I chose to react to the attacks I have received
from my brothers, sisters and fellow citizens because I was
seen in the headquarters of EFCC with my sister, Mrs. Toyin
Saraki.
“I will start by saying that my struggle to fight corruption in
Nigeria was not an assignment or a paid job. It was borne
out of passion and desire to build a new Nigeria where
justice, equity and egalitarianism become a new order.
“I was arrested 14 times in one year by the administration
of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan because I desire a
country where my grandchildren (that I may never know)
will dwell in a nation where life is already structured for
them.
“I cannot throw away my sacrifice of being beaten and my
clothes torn on the floor of the House of Representatives
because of fighting against corruption. I have come too far
to compromise my stand on corruption and corrupt persons.
“I make bold here to challenge anybody who will controvert
the truth that I have never done any government contract,
either at the LG, state or federal levels. It is not criminal to
do so, but he who must come to equity must come with
clean hands.
“If my father is invited by the EFCC, I will go there; if a prima
facie case is established against him, I will shout for his
prosecution. So my great people, I have no regret following
my friend and sister to the EFCC. If you are my friend, you
are my friend.”r |
Politics / Tribunal Refuses To Stop Ladoja's Petition. by sanjex212: 8:42pm On Jul 31, 2015 |
The Oyo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal,
sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has dismissed a motion filed
before it by counsel for the state Governor Abiola Ajimobi
and the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress to
strike out the petition brought before it former governor
Rashidi Ladoja and the Accord Party.
Ladoja and his party, the AP, are challenging the result of
the last governorship election in the state which declared
Ajimobi, the governorship candidate of the APC, as the
winner while Ladoja, who contested the April 11 poll on the
platform of the AP, as the runners up.
Counsel for Ajimobi, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), and
Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), who represents the APC
argued that the motion filed by Ladoja, dated July 3, 2015,
was defective on the ground that it was not signed by an
identifiable counsel.
Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Mohammed Mayaki,
explained that the first motion was to determine whether the
application was signed by the petitioners’ counsel while the
second was to determine if objections raised should be
taken alongside or one after the other.
In his ruling, Mayaki stated that the petitioners’ counsel
clearly signed the petition and stated the address of his
legal firm.
He said, “The name of the counsel was stated in the
application and the petitioner signed on top of his name. The
tribunal is not in doubt that Ogunwole represents the
petitioners. The tribunal affirms that the counsel for the
petitioners is clearly stated.”
