Refs won, not Nigeria. Ghost penalty call with VAR. So much for clear and obvious. No VAR on Nigeria handball in box. VAR gave Nigeria a Re-kick in PKs but didn't give USA one when Nigerian keeper was way off her line. What a farce.

Education / Nigerian Students Attacked & Injured In Indian University by Sapa23: 6:29pm On Oct 17, 2022
Nigerian students are being attacked in a University Campus near Delhi - 30,000 Nigerian students come to study in India paying money, 50,000 Indians live in Nigeria to make money.
Watch video: https://twitter.com/ashoswai/status/1581952480325222400

About 60 Nigerian students pursuing academics in an Indian private university GD Goenka University have fled their campus after they were allegedly beaten and abused on the football field and in their hostel.

According to the Times of India, the Nigerian students said they feared for their lives and were staying in various places of Delhi temporarily as they sought the intervention of the Nigerian embassy intervention

Reports revealed they opted for the “temporary” decision to leave following a protest by a group of Indian students against Nigerians for offering prayers on the football ground nearly a month ago.

The protesting students, who shouted “Jai Shri Ram” slogans, had lodged a complaint with the registrar, asking the authorities to ensure the Nigerians offered rituals or prayers known as ‘namaz’ in India only in their hostel rooms. The matter was resolved amicably, police and the university had said then.

However, on Sunday both the police and the university management said the football field had nothing to do with the protests over ‘namaz’ a month ago.

According to a Nigerian student, Khaleel, the trouble erupted on Friday, when the university decided to have both Indian and Nigerian students in one team.

Our captain spoke with the sports officer and laid down his objections against a ‘mixed team’. The officer decided to call off the match. Despite that, a few Indian students entered the field and before anyone could realise a thing, someone hit our captain on the head with an iron rod. Outsiders, who had come on bikes, also joined them and there was a clash. However, the matter was resolved that day itself,” Khaleel said.

Khaleel alleged that a group of Indian students attacked them in the hostel the next day (Saturday).

They hurled abuses and threatened us with dire consequences. We are 63 Nigerians here in total. We have left the campus for the time being and are staying in Delhi,” he added.

Indian students, on the other hand, alleged they were attacked by a group of Nigerians. Sultan Khan, a pharmacy student, alleged that he was walking on the campus on Saturday when 4 to 5 Nigerians used swearwords that were aimed at him.

“They kept raining blows on me. My friends came to my rescue, but they were thrashed with sticks and rods too,” said Sultan, who lodged a police complaint.

Both sides have lodged complaints against each other at Sohna City police station, leading to cross-FIRs. The cases have been registered under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 34 (common intention) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

“There was no major incident. The two groups had an argument during a football match, which escalated into a fight. We have received complaints from both sides and registered cross-FIRs. We are scanning CCTV footage and will take action accordingly,” said Upasana, the ACP (south).

The university management insisted that no student had left the campus. They, however, said that 10 students had been suspended for their alleged involvement in the ruckus during the Friday match.

Education / UNICAL Set To Resume Academic Activities On October 17 by Sapa23: 6:10am On Oct 11, 2022

The University of Calabar is set to resume academic activities after the nine months strike following the court order by the Appeal Court of Nigeria, this is according to a reliable source at the University.

Last Friday, the court gave the order after dismissing the union’s application for a stay of execution of an earlier ruling of the National Industrial Court directing the university lecturers to resume work.

The University Management headed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Banku Obi is said to have plans to reopen the University on the week of the 17th of October, 2022.

Recall that the three-member panel of the Court of Appeal led by Hamma Barka granted the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) permission to appeal the ruling of the industrial court but ruled that it must first resume work to be allowed to file the appeal. It said should ASUU fail to re-open the universities, the permission it gave the union to appeal against the interlocutory injunction of the National Industrial Court “will be automatically vacated.” It gave the university lecturers’ union seven days within which to file its notice of appeal against the order of the National Industrial Court. “I am inclined to granting the application to appeal the decision of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria. But the order of the lower court shall be immediately obeyed,” the court held in its unanimous ruling. The National Industrial Court had on 21 September ordered ASUU to call off the strike.

Crime / 3 Nurses Arrested In Delta Over Removal Of Dead Child’s Body Parts by Sapa23: 5:50am On Oct 11, 2022

Operatives of Delta State Police Command have arrested three nurses at a private hospital (name withheld) in Asaba over the alleged removal of the eyes, nose and ear of a deceased newborn baby.

It was learned that the hospital had released the deceased child on Sunday after he was confirmed dead by a paediatric, but was, however, brought back, yesterday, by the parents who alleged the removal of the human parts.

A source at the hospital said: “The parents brought the child to the hospital on Sunday evening, immediately our children’s doctor (paediatric) looked at the child and confirmed the child dead after all efforts to bring the newborn back to life.

“The hospital discharged them and the parents took the child away, surprisingly today (Monday), the parents brought the baby accusing the hospital of removing the baby’s eyes, nose and ear.

“They came with the police and arrested some nurses in the hospital.”

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, saying suspects have been arrested.

He said: “It is true but I have not got the details of the incident. The information we got was that the child was delivered to another hospital but was referred to that hospital where the child died.

Politics / UI, UNICAL Profs Narrowly Miss Nobel Prize by Sapa23: 6:10am On Oct 07, 2022
By Akachukwu Ifeanyichukwu

The 2022 Nobel Citation Laureates Prize, which is given to researchers whose works are deemed to be “of Nobel class,” as demonstrated by analysis carried out by the Web of Science and Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), part of Clarivate, failed to be won by two Nigerian professors who were heavily favored.

Professor Oye Gureje from the University of Ibadan reportedly failed to make the cut due to his publications’ limited audience. Professor Oye was named by the Web of Science in 2019 as the “most influential” researcher in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Most Read Researcher in Nigeria, Professor Aniebiet Inyang Ntui is said to have missed the prize due to her works’ insufficient widespread citations. Professor Aniebiet Inyang Ntui is the University Librarian of the University of Calabar and has received serveral appointments from the European Union (EU) and in North America.

The prize was shared among 20 researchers, fourteen of the honorees are based at leading academic institutions in the United States, three are based in Japan, two are based in the United Kingdom and one is based in Germany.

Both Researchers will be hoping for an improved performance next year as Nigeria continues its 36 year search for a Nobel-Related Prize after famous playwright Wole Soyinka, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986.

Education / ASUU: UNICAL Sign MoU With With Nigerian Conservation Foundation by Sapa23: 4:03pm On Sep 29, 2022
By Akachukwu Ifeanyichukwu

The Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF) and the University of Calabar have renewed their association, and vice chancellor Prof. Florence Obi is optimistic that this would result in benefits for both organizations.

The vice chancellor claimed that her optimism was a result of both partners’ strong partnership in the early 1990s, which led to the establishment of the Department of Environmental Education, the publication of numerous books on the subject, an increase in knowledge of environmental issues, and the formation of numerous non-governmental organizations ( NGO).

Speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and the Foundation in the Council Chamber of the Institution, Prof. Florence Obi referred to NCF as a premier conservation organization that has been crucial in developing capacity and maintaining the rainforest.

She was accompanied by her DVC Academics, Professor Angela Oyo-Ita, the DVC Administration, Professor Micheal Okom, the Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe and her University Librarian, Professor Aniebiet Inyang Ntui.

She promised to continue the cooperation and gave me the assurance that the university and foundation will work together on all such pertinent projects.

The meeting, according to Dr. Joseph Onoja, Director of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, was intended to renew the relationship the organization had developed with the university over the years and to create a partnership for ongoing development.

The NCF Director said that the foundation is concerned with conservation development sustainability and principally the protection and conservation of the Cross River Gorillas and their habitat.

Dr Joseph Onoja said the choice of the partnership with the University of Calabar stemmed from the interest of the Centre for African Biodiversity Research Wilder Institute, Ghana in Cross River Monkey, the research pedigree and proximity of Unical, as well as its excellent performance record and robust relationship.

He described the Vice Chancellor as an ambassador of NCF noting that her immense contribution and partnership in the past will take the working relationship to another level.

In an earlier remark, the Director of External Relationship and Partnership, Prof Peter Okafor disclosed that the NCF has agreed to provide scholarships to a minimum of four (4) Masters’s Degree students and one (1) Doctoral Student covering five years.

Prof Peter Okafor said that the scholarships are intended for graduate students in relevant disciplines to undertake researches that would foster community-based efforts to preserve and conserve gorilla wildlife.

The highlight of the event was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding and the presentation of a book by the NCF Director and a memento by Unical VC.

Education / UNICAL Has Lost 11 Professors Not 21 Within 7 Months - ASUU Chair by Sapa23: 6:11pm On Sep 27, 2022
By Akachukwu Ifeanyichukwu

The Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) University of Calabar has confirmed the loss of not fewer than eleven lecturers between January 2022 and September 2022.

This was confirmed by the Chairman of ASUU, University of Calabar chapter, Dr John Edor, who spoke with our correspondent in Calabar on Tuesday.

Dr Edor, however, stressed that the union, despite intimidation and neglect by the Federal Government, would not give up its insistence on their demands until the government met ASUU’s demands.

“It is not correct that we lost 21 lecturers. The truth is we lost about 12 members of the union between the commencement of the strike (February 2022) and now (September 2022).

“The government has not provided a conducive environment devoid of all impediments. We will continue to cope with whatever losses we have had. We will continue to embrace all the hazards, We are not ready to give in because of hunger, intimidation or court action. We are ready to take this fight to a logical end until the necessary things are done which the government ought to do”, Edor reiterated.

Sources within the university stated that the university had repeatedly published obituary announcements, announcing the death and interments of deceased academics, from the institution.

Health / Four Newborns Die In Delta, Doctor Found Drunk by Sapa23: 8:48am On Sep 07, 2022
By Akachukwu Ifeanyichukwu

The families of four newborn babies have been thrown into mourning after they died due to alleged negligence on the part of the doctor on duty at the Sapele Central Hospital, in the Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.

The victims’ families, while lamenting over their deaths, alleged that the doctor on duty was drunk, adding that there was no power supply in the hospital.

Angered by the development, patients, relatives and visitors at the hospital reportedly staged a protest as they slammed the management of the medical facility over the victims’ deaths.

A relative to one of the bereaved mothers, Benjamin Ikeji, said all the women due for delivery lost their babies in a single night.

He said, “When we brought my sister to this hospital, the doctor told us that it was not yet time for her delivery and I and my sister’s husband waited till 10pm.

"At midnight my sister said the baby was stuck and the nurses couldn’t do anything because the doctor was not around.

“In the morning, I met the doctor who said there was nothing he could do since they had no light. I bought fuel for them that night before I left and the next thing I heard was that my sister lost the baby.”

Another victim, Newton Oroba, while mourning over the death of his newborn, said his wife had been traumatised over the incident.

He said, “The doctor on duty was drunk. We came to the hospital around 9pm and left. Only to come back in the morning, my wife said she lost her newborn”

Some patients and relatives of the deceased victims, upon sighting the doctor, reportedly confronted him to demand an explanation for his absence while on duty.

Efforts to reach the hospital management for a reaction failed as workers in the hospital declined to speak.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mordi Ononye, did not respond to calls and a text message sent to his phone number as of the time of filing this report.
