Politics / Women Affairs Minister Threatens To Jail UNICAL Students Who Stood Up by Sapa23: 8:39pm On Sep 14, 2023

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy, has been caught on tape threatening to jail a female law student of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) who accused the suspended dean of the law faculty, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, of sexual harassment.

Some students, predominantly female students of the UNICAL law faculty in August protested in the school, accusing Ndifon of constantly harassing them sexually.

Following the protest, the school authority suspended Ndifon and subsequently constituted a panel of investigation to hear from both Ndifon and his alleged victims on the issue.

SaharaReporters gathered some victims – current and past students – and other witnesses already testified before the panel but Ndifon is scheduled to give his own testimony this week.

However, SaharaReporters was informed that rather than prepare and present his case, Ndifon has been exploring other means to get himself off the hook, including getting the support of the women affairs minister to intimidate the victims and prevent the panel from doing its job.

Some of the victims have complained about the minister calling to intimidate them into not testifying before the panel or changing their stories in favour of Ndifon.

SaharaReporters learnt that Kennedy accused the victims of working with some interested parties in the school including its vice-chancellor to unfairly remove Ndifon from the school.

Kennedy has taken over the case, reportedly saying it is under her jurisdiction. It was learnt that she had been calling and threatening the victims, claiming that the students had denied being raped or sexually harassed and that they were being used.

In a leaked audio conversation that she had with one of the female law students who have accused Ndifon of sexual harassment, the minister is heard saying, “At least you save my number, so soon you will come and visit me, right?” to which the student said, “If my VC approves.”

The minister quickly interrupted her and shouted, “What do you mean by if your VC approves?” But the student in a frightened voice said, “I don’t know na; okay, I will come and visit.”

Continuing the conversation, the minister said, “My dear, I want you to understand something, the day I spoke to you, I told you I recorded it. If your VC makes you go and lie against somebody, you will go to jail. Trust me, I personally will put you in jail.

“I want you to be very careful because your future is at stake. You can’t join anybody and maltreat a fellow human being. I won’t equally want you to be maltreated.

“The day I spoke with you, I recorded what we spoke and you told me the whole truth, and if your VC, because I contacted your VC, I don’t know what her plans are, I don’t want to quote anybody. I don’t equally want to condemn or judge anybody.

“But I want you to be very careful because this thing is going to bring fire. So, be very-very careful. If I were you, as you have already said to me nobody raped you, nobody did sexual harassment, keep off from this case because if she makes you go there, she is recording whatever you people are saying in that panel and if she records you and I bring my own, you got contradicted.

“And this man has gone to court, my ministry will join them and make sure you go to jail so that you will be an example to others.

“So, I want you to be very-very careful. This one you are telling me if your VC permits you, there is nothing she can do for you. She is not the one paying your school fees. So, save your future by standing on the truth at all times.

“Save my number. When you have time to visit me, I will find a way to empower you people so that your lives will be easier for you but keep away from things that will…, I am a minister, I’m above her (the VC) by position, you know that.

“So, don’t go and do anything that will put you into a very big trouble that will scandalise you in the whole world because this matter has gone far and beyond. I won’t play what you people said to me except you people try to deny it. I have to conceal it as something you told me in confidence but I’m warning you to keep off from lying against anybody.”

It was gathered that an alumnus of the university and a lecturer in the faculty of law in the school, identified as Prof. Okom told the panel investigating the allegations against Ndifon, that the suspended professor of law, was her project supervisor in 2008 when she graduated from the faculty and that “if all his victims were to come out to testify, it would take more than a month to hear their testimonies.”

Okom reportedly said, “During my time at the university, I heard many of my classmates talk about how Ndifon sexually harassed them. In fact, there was one of my classmates that dropped out of the faculty because of the randy behaviour of Ndifon.”

When SaharaReporters contacted the minister, Kennedy, over the leaked phone conversation with one of the victims, she said it was a wrong number, even though TrueCaller showed the name associated with the number as Uju Kennedy.

Recently, the minister told CITY LAWYER that no fewer than 10 persons had called to threaten her over the sexual harassment scandal.

She said the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, had ordered a thorough investigation into the allegations, adding that she had also assigned her Special Adviser on Women Affairs to follow through on the matter.

According to Kennedy, she has been “scandalized” due to her commitment to get to the root of the matter.

She said her quest to get to the root of the matter was being misconstrued.

She was quoted by CITY LAWYER as saying, “How can I want the man to go free if he has committed such hideous crime? I only want the truth to prevail, especially after hearing from the three girls that the VC sent me their numbers.

“I equally sent an official memo to acknowledge the extra one week the VC said they would (need to) round up the investigation and told her to please go on and send the report to me, Minister of Education and to the SA to First Lady on Women.

“I can never as a mother support evil on innocent children, and will take drastic action if the man is found guilty. Let the truth prevail and let justice be done to put an end to this menace.”

Foreign Affairs / Lostisland Extends Support As 20,000 Feared Dead In Libyan City by Sapa23: 2:12pm On Sep 14, 2023
Up to 20,000 people are feared dead after a torrent of water ripped through the Libyan city of Derna as people slept this week, its mayor has said. A deluge of rainfall from Mediterranean storm Daniel caused two dams to collapse, sending waves more than 20 feet high sweeping through the port city in the country's east.

"The situation is very large and surprising for the city of Derna. We were not able to confront it with our capabilities that preceded the storm and the torrent," said Mayor Abdel Moneim Al-Ghaithi.

Libya has been in political chaos since long-serving ruler Col Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed in 2011 - leaving the oil-rich nation effectively split with an interim, internationally recognised government operating from the capital, Tripoli, and another one in the east. The international community has swiftly responded with humanitarian aid and relief efforts to assist Libya. However, the Federal Republic of Lostisland, due to its lack of physical presence in Libya, has been unable to provide direct assistance.

In a statement, President Yaroslav Mar of Lostisland said: “Our hearts go out to the people of Libya as they face this tremendous tragedy. We offer our deepest condolences during this difficult time. While we may not have the capacity for physical assistance in Libya, please know that our hearts are with you. Libya’s strength and resilience in the face of this disaster are truly admirable.”

Previous estimates from aid agencies and government officials put the number of deaths at more than 5,000, with 10,000 people still missing. A precise tally is incredibly difficult given the level of devastation and limited infrastructure in the area, with bodies still washing up on the shore and burials being held in mass graves. If confirmed, an estimated death toll of over 20,000 would mean that around a fifth of the city's population has been killed.

Politics / “This is a Significant Step Forward For Africa” - AU Joins G20 by Sapa23: 3:06pm On Sep 09, 2023

The African Union was made a permanent member of the G20, comprising the world’s richest and most powerful countries, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the bloc’s summit in New Delhi on Saturday.

The African Union, a continental body of 55 member states, now has the same status as the European Union – the only regional bloc with a full membership. Its previous designation was “invited international organisation”.

On the sidelines in New Dehli, Nigerian Climate Diplomat, Professor Aniebiet Inyang Ntui who has served as the Ambassador of the EU’s European Climate Pact said “This is a significant step forward for Africa and for global climate action. The African continent is disproportionately affected by climate change, and it is essential that African countries have a seat at the table where decisions are made about how to address this crisis.

I am confident that the African Union will make a valuable contribution to the G20. The AU has a strong track record of leadership on climate change, and its members are committed to taking action to reduce emissions and build climate resilience.”

Modi, in his opening remarks at the summit, invited the AU, represented by Chairperson Azali Assoumani, to take a seat at the table of G20 leaders as a permanent member.

“Honoured to welcome the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 Family. This will strengthen the G20 and also strengthen the voice of the Global South,” said a message on Modi’s official account on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

The move was proposed by Modi in June.

Reuters earlier cited the draft declaration admitting the African Union as a permanent member.

Other issues being decided on at the summit include more loans to developing nations by multilateral institutions, reform of international debt architecture, regulations on cryptocurrency and the impact of geopolitics on food and energy security.

The 38-page draft which was circulated among members left the “geopolitical situation” paragraph blank — reflecting deep division over the war in Ukraine — but 75 other paragraphs indicated broad agreement on issues such as cryptocurrencies and reforms in multilateral development banks.

The G20 previously comprised 19 countries and the European Union, with the members representing around 85% of global GDP, more than 75% of global trade and about two-thirds of the world population.

Explosion rocks UNICAL, library shut down

Asare AsareJuly 6, 2023

An explosion reportedly went off on Wednesday at the special education wing of the University of Calabar.

It was not confirmed if there were casualties, just as the cause of the explosion was yet to be ascertained.

However the University authorities quickly directed immediate evacuation of students and staff for safety.

In a statement confirming the explosion, the Registrar, Gabriel Egbe said the Vice Chancellor, Prof Florence Obi has ordered that the Library be shut down immediately.

It was also directed that students should keep off the facility.

Part of the release states, “The decision to shut down the building is with immediate effect. The University librarian and chief security officer are to jointly ensure urgent and total evacuation of staff, students and properties out of the building as well as enforce the sealing of the structure.”

It could be recalled that the current management of the university led by Prof Obi had earlier declared a State of emergency on the same building.

Education / Explosion: UNICAL Evacuates Staff, Students From Library by Sapa23: 8:42am On Jul 06, 2023
The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has issued an urgent directive for the immediate and complete evacuation of both staff and students from the main library in response to yesterday’s (July 4) explosion that occurred on the premises.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Florence Obi, conveyed this information through a memorandum released by the University Registrar, Mr Gabriel Egbe, on Thursday (July 5).

The memorandum was also sent to the Deputy Vice-Chancellors (Academic and Administration), Bursar, Librarian, Information Officer, and Acting Chief Security Officer. It instructed the Chief Security Officer to promptly seal off the building and ensure the safeguarding of all assets within to prevent any further damage.

According to the memorandum, “Following the report of an explosive sound that emanated from the University of Calabar Main Library building on July 4, resulting in a crack in the structure, the Vice-Chancellor has directed the immediate and comprehensive evacuation of the building.”

“Therefore, all staff and students are hereby instructed to refrain from entering the University Library building henceforth.”

“The Chief Security Officer, Cpt. Augustine Bisong ( rtd) and the University Librarian, Professor Aniebiet Inyang Ntui are responsible for ensuring the complete evacuation of staff, students, and all University properties from the building without delay. The Chief Security Officer shall seal off the premises and guarantee the security of any remaining University assets,” stated the memorandum.

It is worth noting that fear spread throughout the university on Wednesday after an explosive sound was heard from the main library, which has already faced scrutiny regarding its structural stability for the upcoming session after years of neglect and lack of maintenance.

In his speech, the President of Ukraine emphasized that the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant disaster is not a natural disaster or a manifestation of the climate crisis, but a disaster ordered by Putin personally.

The Head of State also drew attention to the fact that due to the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam, fuel storage facilities, warehouses with chemicals and fertilizers, animal burial grounds, including two “anthrax burials” on the temporarily occupied territory, were flooded; sewage got into the water.

He called on the international community to facilitate in drawing the attention of international organizations to help people who remained in the temporarily occupied territory affected by the flooding.

In addition, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the creation of a high-level international working group that will consolidate worldwide efforts to bring Russia to justice for the ecocide in Ukraine.

Sports / Nigerian Family Plans N90M Investment In Brentford FC by Sapa23: 9:54pm On May 04, 2023
According to documents that have surfaced, the Nigerian “James Idung” family is reportedly considering a significant investment in English football club, Brentford FC. It is said that they are looking to acquire stocks worth N90,437,172.79 Nigerian Naira (approximately 155,617.05 Pound sterling), indicating a potential entry into the football investment arena.

The information obtained from these documents suggests that David “Davis” James Idung, a member of the family, is slated to hold a substantial 70% stake in the invested funds. If accurate, this would position him as a key player in the decision-making processes and future direction of Brentford FC.

Brentford FC’s commendable performance in the current season further enhances the appeal of this investment opportunity. The club’s strong showing has propelled them to the 9th position on the league table, a noteworthy achievement for a team that recently secured promotion to the Premier League.

While the details surrounding the potential investment remain speculative at this stage, the growing success of Brentford FC and their promising league position make them an attractive proposition for investors seeking opportunities in English football.

Football enthusiasts and followers of Nigerian football will be eager to monitor any further developments regarding the James Idung family’s potential investment and its potential impact on Brentford FC’s continued progress in the Premier League.

It’s important to note that the information presented is based on unverified documents, and official announcements or confirmations from the parties involved are still pending.

A 300-level student of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Library and Information Science Department, Agidi Precious Mhenuter, 22, has died after Medical Staff at the University Medical Center refused to attend to her unless she pays 200 Naira for a patient card which she is entitled to as a student of the varsity, health services are included the fees for students.

It was gathered that she fell ill at her hostel on Saturday morning, January 28, and was rushed to the school’s medical center for treatment.

However, she was left unattended for hours until she eventually gave up the ghost.

According to an eyewitness, “Precious got sick this morning by 4 am and we rushed her to the medical center. We got there by 4:30 am and they asked us to bring N200 for the card.”

“Even after we paid they didn’t attend to her. They left her even as she was in pain. She eventually died at 7 am, two hours after we got there. And they took her to the mortuary at about 8 am, without even contacting her parents.”

The unfortunate incident angered students who took to the streets of the campus to demand justice for their colleagues. This is as Professor Florence Banku Obi-led’s administration continues to extort illegal fees from students.

In addition to the modest successes recorded in the years, we are waging the war against corruption aggressively. I am pleased that the cashless policy has sunk into both staff and students as well as the policy on booknsales.”

“As we continue to deal with unscrupulous elements within the system, through the invocation of the relevant rules and regulations and subjecting them to the prescribed disciplinary procedure, I assure you of our unwavering commitment to the task of sanitizing the university”, she said.

Nigeria Floods: UNICAL Prof Participates in UN High Level Meeting

Professor Aniebiet Inyang Ntui has participated in the United Nations Climate Change High Level Capacity-building Meeting on Monday, October 17 in the German City of Bonn. This comes as Nigeria is facing unprecedented floods which has left 1.4 million people displaced and claimed over 500 lives.

The OECD and the UNFCCC Paris Committee on Capacity-building’s Network, are convening a series of meetings on capacity development and climate change, a key theme to ensure implementation of the Paris Agreement. During the meeting on “Partnerships for Capacity Development and Climate Change”, she called on more partnerships to support efforts to mitigate climate change and asked for participating nations to support the Nigerian Government’s recovery efforts.

Earlier, the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, expressed his sadness over the loss of lives and property due to the floods. Professor Aniebiet is expected to play an active role at the Conference of Parties (COP) 27 in Egypt as she played an instrumental role during the Climate Change COP 26 held last year in Glasgow, she was appointed by the United Kingdom Government as a Member of the COP 26-UK Universities Climate Network.

Professor Aniebiet Inyang Ntui is the Most Read Researcher in Nigeria, a 2022 Nobel Citation Laureates Prize Nominee and the University Librarian of the University of Calabar.

Politics / I Did Not Endorse Obi For Presidency - Aniebiet Inyang Ntui (UNICAL Librarian) by Sapa23: 5:23pm On Oct 29, 2022
Aniebiet Inyang Ntui, the Librarian of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), has distanced herself from an article claiming she is set to endorse Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).

A recently published article claimed Ntui, a professor of library and information science, will soon formally announce her support for Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed.

The article further claimed Ntui was named as a possible minister of education in the “Obi-Datti administration”.

But in a statement on Saturday, Ntui said she has no plans to endorse any political party or candidate ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The UNICAL librarian noted that she has no interest in “any divisive issues or any political appointments”.

The professor said she is fully committed to her job as the librarian at UNICAL.

“My attention has been drawn to an article regarding my endorsement of a certain political party and its presidential candidate ahead of the 2023 general elections,” the statement reads.

“I am fully committed to my position at the University of Calabar and I am not in any way interested in any divisive issues or any political appointments.

“I have no plans to endorse any candidate for the elections.”
