The evacuation of the second batch of Nigerians from South Africa, owing to ongoing xenophobic attacks, suffered an interruption on Tuesday following the delay in granting landing permit to Air Peace. The airline had volunteered to evacuate Nigerians willing to return home following the recent violence against foreigners in the southern African country. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the airline, in collaboration with the Federal Government had, on September 11, evacuated the first batch of 187 Nigerians from South Africa. There was a plan for the airline to evacuate another batch of 320 Nigerians who had indicated interest to return home, with the flight expected to arrive in Lagos at 7.00p.m on Tuesday. However, Mr Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, told newsmen in Lagos that the airline’s B777 aircraft deployed for the operation was still on standby at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. According to him, the aircraft is supposed to have departed Lagos at 1.00 am, but was denied landing permit by the South African authorities. “We did not take off at 1:00am as scheduled because South African authorities are yet to give us landing permit. “We are hopeful that they will give us the permit. Our crew waited till 3:00 am, but when the permit did not come, they went back to the hotel. “Once we get the permit we will set off to South Africa. We don’t want to speculate but we are hopeful they will give the permit,”Onyema said. NAN reports that the South African authorities had on Sept. 11 also prevented some Nigerians from leaving the country, by insisting on a fresh profiling exercise in spite of the one earlier conducted by the Nigerian High Commission. The situation led to several hours of delay before 187 of the more than 300 Nigerians were successfully evacuated https://punchng.com/xenophobia-breaking-nigerians-evacuation-delayed-as-authorities-withhold-landing-permit-from-air-peace/ |

Ipobs are senseless set of people From Olajide Abiola I am eternally grateful to the country for the opportunity to serve in the Nigerian Army. I was in the Army when I earned my degree in Computer Science. Throughout my years in the University, I earned my full pay in the military. This was the case with thousands of us. Some even got additional scholarships from the Army along with their full salaries. I learnt a lot in the military. I cannot be ungrateful to a nation as Nigeria. I can't. I know so many people. And I mean so many people who have benefitted and who still benefit from FG's scholarship through TETFund, who are ungrateful Nigerians. They tear down this country at every given opportunity. I mean, these are people who got scholarships in the millions. N5m, N10m, N15m in full scholarships. They also continued to draw their salaries along with robust scholarship packages. You also have entrepreneurs who have raised millions of dollars for their companies working to solve one ot two problems in the country. I do tell people that if the problem they claim to be trying to solve did not exist or had been solved by government, they would not have any company in the first place to create a solution or value that will attract funding. Those who have benefitted a lot from Nigeria are some of the loudest ingrates. Including many of those who enjoyed heavily susbsidized tertiary education across Federal and State institutions. You do not find the illiterates tear down Nigeria like those who government subsidized their education. |

The Independent National Electoral Commission said on Monday that it would not call any witness to defend its case in respect of the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Atiku and his party are by their petition challenging the outcome of February 23, 2019 presidential election which INEC declared was won by President Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress. The petitioners had rested their case with 62 witnesses on July 19 after which the five-man tribunal led by Justice Mohammed Garba adjourned further proceedings till Monday for INEC to open its defence. But when called upon by the tribunal to open his case on Monday, INEC’s lawyer, Yunus Usman (SAN), said it would not be necessary on the grounds that the evidence extracted from the petitioners’ witnesses during cross-examination was in support of the commission’s case. READ ALSO: No going back on Lagos-Ibadan road four-month closure –FG He said, “We have painstakingly reviewed the evidence of petitioners’ witnesses. “We have also painstakingly studied the petitioners’ evidence under cross-examination, which supports our defence and our denial in consonance with our pleadings. “My lords, we do not see the need to waste your lordship’s precious time by repeating what their witnesses have repeated under cross-examination. “In that circumstance, we will not call any witness to help them prove their case. “We, therefore, rely on the evidence of their witness under cross-examination.” Responding, Buhari’s lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), requested to be allowed to open his client’s case at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. APC’s lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said his decision on whether or not to call witnesses would depend on the case to be presented by Buhari’s legal team. On his part, the petitioners’ lawyer, Dr. Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), thanked INEC’s legal team for not calling witnesses. “I profusely thank my brother and friend for deciding not to call any witness,” he said. https://punchng.com/breaking-we-wont-call-witnesses-because-atikus-witnesses-supported-our-case-inecs-lawyer-tells-tribunal/ |
