The Chadian Army has announced Idris Deby 37-year old son, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, a four-star general, as the new leader of the country.

Idris Deby died on the battlefield after three decades in power, the army announced on state television on Tuesday.

The shocking announcement came after the 68-year-old was proclaimed the winner of a presidential election that had given him a sixth term in office.

The army said Deby had been commanding his army at the weekend as it battled against rebels who had launched a major incursion into the north of the country on election day.

Deby “has just breathed his last breath defending the sovereign nation on the battlefield,” army spokesman General Azem Bermandoa Agouna said in a statement read out on state television.

Deby, 68, had ruled Chad with an iron fist for three decades but was a key ally in the West’s anti-jihadist campaign in the troubled Sahel region.

On Monday, the army had claimed a “great victory” in its battle against the rebels from neighbouring Libya, saying it had killed 300 fighters, with the loss of five soldiers in its own ranks during eight days of combat.

Deby would have been one of the longest-serving leaders in the world, after provisional results showed him winning the April 11 election.

He was a herder’s son from the Zaghawa ethnic group who took the classic path to power through the army, and relished the military culture.

His latest election victory — with almost 80 percent of the vote — had never been in doubt, with a divided opposition, boycott calls, and a campaign in which demonstrations were banned or dispersed.

Deby had campaigned on a promise of bringing peace and security to the region, but his pledges were undermined by the rebel incursion.

The government had sought Monday to assure concerned residents that the offensive was over.

There had been panic in some areas of N’Djamena on Monday after tanks were deployed along the city’s main roads, an AFP journalist reported.

The tanks were later withdrawn apart from a perimeter around the president’s office, which is under heavy security during normal times.

“The establishment of a security deployment in certain areas of the capital seems to have been misunderstood,” government spokesman Cherif Mahamat Zene had said on Twitter on Monday.

“There is no particular threat to fear.”

However, the US embassy in N’Djamena had on Saturday ordered non-essential personnel to leave the country, warning of possible violence in the capital. Britain also urged its nationals to leave.

France’s embassy said in an advisory to its nationals in Chad that the deployment was a precaution and there was no specific threat to the capital.

The rebel raid in the provinces of Tibesti and Kanem was carried out by the Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT), based in Libya.

The group has a non-aggression pact with Khalifa Haftar, a military strongman who controls much of Libya’s east.

FACT, a group mainly made up of the Saharan Goran people, said in a statement Sunday that it had “liberated” the Kanem region. Such claims in remote desert combat zones are difficult to verify.

The Tibesti mountains near the Libyan frontier frequently see fighting between rebels and the army, as well as in the northeast bordering Sudan. French air strikes were needed to stop an incursion there in February 2019.

A coalition of civil society organisations, the Civil Society Forum of Nigeria, Monday, blamed the calls for the resignation of Isa Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy over his past comments on the Al-Qaeda terrorist group, on unpatriotic elements bent on derailing the steady progress being made under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari.

This is even as the group reiterated the position of the embattled Minister that his sermons in the past were largely influenced by information available to him at the time.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Head of the coalition, Olayinka Dada described Pantami as a man desirous of availing his country the expertise and sacrifice needed to turn her fortune around. According to him, the ongoing National Identification Number, NIN registration exercise, a brainchild of the Minister, is making a lot of criminally-minded elements uncomfortable, hence their agitation for his removal at all cost.

[b]“The huge cry about #PantamiMustGo is an attempt to derail President Muhammadu Buhari’s government from resolving the insecurity problems bedeviling Nigerian and Nigerians.

“As a young cleric, Sheikh Isa Pantami like other devoted clerics, sermonised in favour of his religious beliefs. The research available as at then prompted those beliefs. As time progresses and his educational pursuit increases, he stoutly stood for humanity through various efforts at ensuring peaceful religious coexistence and harmonious relationships amongst all people. The NIN initiative, the coalition added, is being rejected “by elements that are in the business of profiting through crimes against the nation.”

Fielding questions from journalists on the sideline of the briefing, Dada said Pantami’s ordeal bears no relationship with Kemi Adeosun’s, the former Minister of Finance who resigned her appointment a few years owing to certificate forgery.

“Pantami did not forge any certificate and did not lie on oath. So, it is pointless to compare this with the issue related to the former Minister,” he stressed.

Some yet to be identified gunmen have again attacked two police stations in Abia State killing two police officers and setting several vehicles on fire.

A police signal sighted by Daily Trust confirmed that the first attack was carried out at Zone 13 Headquarters Awka, while the second one happened at Uzuakoli in Bende Local Government Area of the State.

Two police officers, INSP. Ishaku Aura and PC. Uzoma Uwaebuka at Zone 13 Headquarters lost their lives in the attack carried out around 4:00am on Monday.

“Zone 13 headquarters Awka was attacked this morning by 0400hrs , men posted to CP quarters including CP himself was drafted to the scene immediately, when we reached there , unfortunately two of our 54 personnel lost their life. Namely:- INSP. Ishaku Aura and PC. Uzoma Uwaebuka. May their souls rest in peace, meanwhile all men posted to any beat should be at extra red alert.” the signal read.

While no life was lost in the second attack on Police formation in Uzuakoli, Bende Local Government Area of the State, many vehicles were however set on fire.

The State Government had earlier announced that it had uncovered plots by yet to be properly identified hoodlums to attack some key locations within the state.

The State Government also said security agencies in the state have been fully mobilized and placed on high alert to thwart the planned attack and bring those concerned to justice swiftly.

Recall that the attack on Police Stations and killing of security operatives have been on the increase recently in the South East of Nigeria.

Not fewer than 12 attacks have been carried out by the unknown gunmen in some of the states in the east in the last three months.

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, and his alleged support for global terrorism is the latest target of a media trial, complete with its own Twitter hashtag #PantamiResign.

The trial cycle started with the false alarm that the minister has been placed on a terrorism list by United States authorities, then turned into a retraction and apology, which fed into a twitter frenzy and gave rise to reports trawling through past sermons by the minister and culminating into a petition for the United States to presently put the minister on its terror watch list.

Pantami is being accused of sympathising with Boko Haram and actively supporting international terrorist organisations such as the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. The minister has denied the allegations and instructed his lawyers to take action.

The Daily Independent newspaper opened the salvo on April 11 by publishing an unsubstantiated report for which it has since issued an apology and retraction.

The report dubbed ‘Disquiet as America places Nigerian minister on watch list’ alleged that “America’s Intelligence Service” has placed Pantami on its watch list for his anti-American pro-jihadist beliefs and close alliance with Boko Haram founder, Muhammad Yusuf.

The paper credited “Western Intelligence” with linking Pantami with Al-Qaeda leaders and paying glowing tributes to them in YouTube videos. It also cited “Middle Eastern Intelligence” sources that photos of Pantami and his jihadist allies are trending.

Some online news sites and a number of Twitter users then regurgitated the claims with the NewswireNGR publishing an old video of Mr Pantami debating the ideologies of Boko Haram with its founder, Muhammad Yusuf, as evidence of their friendship.

A factcheck by Premium Times debunked both claims. In its verdict, the news site stated “There is no evidence that Mr Pantami is on the U.S. watch list for terrorism. The U.S. does not disclose those on the list. The source quoted by the platforms that published the report also does not exist. Meanwhile, the newspapers have now deleted their posts.

“Also, it is FALSE to claim that the debate between Mr Pantami and the late Yusuf was a friendly chat. It was a heated debate which has now formed the basis for scholarly research on the ideology of Boko Haram.”

In less than a week, both the Daily Independent and NewswireNGR retracted their stories and apologized to the minister.

According to an American-based Nigerian media scholar, Farooq Kperogi, the story was planted by telecommunications companies who have been suffering financially due to Mr Pantami’s directive suspending the registration of new SIM cards pending the completion of an audit of the Subscriber Registration Database.

Kperogi published in his blog “Notes from Atlanta” that at least two of his friends who are editors of Nigerian newspapers have confided to him that they received the story from telecommunications industry operators but refused to publish it due to its inherent legal problems.

None of the story publishers has reacted to this claim as of present. However, the alleged sponsors could be on to a winning strategy as two prominent news sites Peoples Gazette and Sahara Reporters took up the challenge of substantiating the allegations.

Peoples Gazette and Sahara Reporters dug up several lectures and sermons in both video and audio where they cited Pantami supporting terrorism. With headlines such as “We are all happy whenever unbelievers are being killed: Minister Pantami”, “I support terrorist groups like Taliban, Al-Qaeda, not Boko Haram: Minister Pantami”, as well as “Boko Haram terrorists are our Muslim brothers, shouldn’t be killed like pigs: Minister Pantami” Peoples Gazette presented Mr Pantami as a religious bigot and an active supporter of international terrorism.

Sahara Reporters followed the same track with the headline “I Support Terrorist Groups Like Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Not Boko Haram – Minister Pantami” and published an opinion article titled “Unmasking A Jihadi Masquerade: The Many Faces of Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami.” Both the report and the opinion piece harped on the Islamic doctrines and preachings of Mr Pantami which they posited to be in tune with global terrorism.

Joining the bandwagon, a group called Concerned Nigerians convened by renowned activist Comrade Deji Adeyanju petitioned the United States Department of State to permanently place Mr Pantami on its terrorist watchlist. According to the petition, “Those who express extremist views remain a threat to world peace as they support mass murder of both Christians and Muslims globally. This remains unacceptable. Our reply to those who say these men may have had a change of heart is that terrorists don’t repent, they are only looking for an opportunity to get close to power so they can strike harder.”

The story trended on Twitter with #PantamiResign being countered with #PantamiWillStay. Like all such public debates in Nigeria, the issue has since degenerated into a North against South, Christian versus Muslim affair. Some of the anti-Pantami commentators are likening the issue to that of former minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun who was hounded out of office by the media for failing to participate in the National Youth Service Corps and obtaining a fake exemption certificate. Others express fears that the database of the National Identity Number (NIN) being supervised by Mr Pantami’s ministry could be transmitted to terrorists if the minister is indeed a sympathiser.

In his defense, the minister’s spokesperson, Uwa Suleiman, wrote that the media trial is the work of her principal’s detractors who have chosen to smear him using the sensitive topic of religion. According to her, “People only throw stones at a fruit-bearing tree. Again, I borrow a line from Margaret Thatcher; when they begin to attack you personally, then they have no single political argument left.”

Pantami also had an extensive interview with Premium Times, published on Friday, where he refuted all the allegations against him. He reiterated that this is an orchestrated media campaign by those opposed to the NIN/SIM linking policy of the Federal Government which is being executed by his ministry. He also denied being a supporter of terrorism, arguing that he led the ideological attack against Boko Haram during its infancy. The minister added that he was quoted out of context in the speeches he made during the 2000s.

As this media trial unfolds, some key issues need to be considered by all media practitioners and stakeholders in Nigeria.

Firstly, the original story was baseless and unsubstantiated. We need to ask why would media organizations publish unfound stories that they would later retract and apologize? Is it true as claimed by Kperogi that they were paid by some telecommunications operators to besmirch the name of the minister? If true, who is going to unmask these sponsors and punish the perpetrators?

Secondly, a multicultural and multi-lingual country like Nigeria needs diversity within its media landscape. NewswireNGR became a laughing stock among Hausa speakers when it presented a highly antagonistic debate as a friendly chat. This suggests that the medium has no Hausa speaker among its employees and was not willing to seek counsel from professional translators.

Thirdly, a very important question is whether or not a Nigerian citizen who held unpopular views in the past has the right to political office after recanting. This is because almost all moderate Muslims in Northern Nigeria used to blindly and ignorantly support Al-Qaeda and Taliban when they were operating internationally only to reject and repudiate their ideologies with the emergence of Boko Haram. It is indeed instructive that while Osama Bin Laden’s posters, stickers and T-shirts were popular items across Northern Nigeria in the 1990s, there was not a commensurate display of affection for ISIS or veneration of its leader Al-Baghdadiy.

Finally, the minister needs to come out and clearly state his ideological evolution concerning global terror networks and provide contextual information regarding his past utterances.

Prices of cement has increased by 67 per cent in the South East states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

A market survey conducted by NAN at various wholesale and retail shops in the zone shows that the price of the product has increased almost by double when compared to the price in 2020.

A cement dealer at Kenyetta Market in Enugu State capital, Mr Ifeanyi Amadi said the increase in the product’s price started last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and increase in dollar exchange.

He noted that a trailer load of Dangote cement with 600 bags initially sold at N1.5 million in 2020 but is now N2.3 million in the first quarter of 2021.

“The prices change on daily basis, so as we are talking now, I cannot guarantee the prices it will be sold tomorrow,” he said.

Another retailer at Uwani, Samuel Uwakwe, said he was surprised at the rate prices of the product in the country.

According to him, a bag of Dangote Cement is sold at N3,900, Unicem for N3,700; Bua Cement for N3,700 and Kogi Super Cement is sold at N3,600.

Uwakwe lamented that few individuals were given opportunity to supply the product and pleaded with suppliers to reduce the prices and make it available for the citizens.

He maintained that the prices would likely crash during raining season.

A Block Industry Owner, Mr Albert Okechukwu noted that increase in the price of the product affected his business as he still sold six-inch and nine-inch block at N170 and N180 respectively.

“This is the same price we sold last year and it is same till date because we cannot change price in order to retain our customers but most block industries have reduced quality of their blocks,” he said.

A site Engineer, Mr Emma Ugwuoke said he wanted to start a building in the village when the price was N2,800 last year but was waiting to see if it would come down.

“When I went back next time, I was told it was N3, 000 and to my greatest surprise, they sell N3,900 and N4,000 now in my village.

“There is nothing one can do than to buy it like that. I want government to do something urgently about it because it is frustrating buying cement at that price,” Ugwuoke said.

In Abia, a cross-section of residents of Umuahia, the state capital, also decried the high price of cement, which ranges from N4,000 to N4,100 per 50kg bag.

Those who spoke to NAN said the price hike had further dashed the hope of many Nigerians, wishing to own their personal homes.

A businessman, Mr Victor Ugwu, said he had to suspend his building project because of the “unfortunate development”.

Ugwu said: “I have stopped my project for now. I cannot afford to continue with the current price of the commodity.

“The economy is very bad so I hope to wait until there is a drop in the price.

“I think the hike can be attributed to the monopoly being enjoyed by the cement producers in the country. Unfortunately, there may not be any respite until that monopoly is broken.”

However, a cement dealer, Mr James Ogbonna, said the problem had nothing to do with the manufacturers of the commodity.

Rather, Ogbonna blamed the price hike on the activities of “shylock distributors” of cement.

He said that the hike had affected his business adversely, adding that cement patronage had been at the lowest ebb, since the price hike.

He said: “In the first and second week of March, we sold a bag for N3,200, but within the third week we started selling at N3,500.

“By the end of March, the price moved up to N4,000 and now, we sell between N4,000 and N4100, depending on the brand.”

Another dealer, Mr Godwin Okafor, said that his sales had dropped drastically as a result of the hike.

“We have a lot of challenges in this cement business now. When we make deposit and order for the goods, it takes about one month before we get delivery,” he said.

It is a similar situation in Awka in Anambra as stakeholders decry the situation.

Mr Kenechukwu Okoye, a cement dealer along Zik Avenue, Awka said before the #EndSARS protest in 2020, a 50kg bag of cement was sold at N2,500.

“Shortly after the #EndSARS, the price rose to N3,000 and from there to the present price of N4,000 and N4,100, we are selling today,” he said.

Okoye said though the distributors initially blamed the problem on difficulties encountered by the hauling firm transporting the product, the situation had come to stay.

In Owerri, Imo capital, price of cement is between N3,850 and N4300, depending on the brand.

At the Building Materials Market in Naze, Owerri North Local Government Area, Dangote and BUA cement are sold at N4,000 per bag while BUA and UNICEM are sold for N3,900.

Mr Okechukwu Okonya, a seller, said the cost could be attributed to high cost of transportation as a result of fuel price.

Okonya also said major dealers sometimes hoard the product in their warehouses to create artificial scarcity.

Another trader, Mr Marcel Iwu, agreed that although there had been hoarding by major dealers, manufacturers had also complained of increased cost of raw materials.

Iwu added that the prices could go higher or reduce at any given time, noting that even if prices fall, traders would want to sell off their old stock at higher rates.

NAN reports that in Abakaliki, Ebonyi, prices of almost all building materials have gone up.

The prices of cement, rods of various sizes, corrugated roofing sheets and other building materials and accessories according to NAN findings have been on the increase since January.

The price of Dangote and Bua which sold at N2,500 earlier in November and December 2020 now sold between N4000 and N4500.

Similarly, Unicem cement which also sold at N2,300 within the same period had also gone up to N4,000 and N4,300.

Mr John Okoh, a cement dealer at Kpiri-Kpiri market in an interview with NAN attributed the development to lack of price control mechanism and high rate of exchange rate of the Naira against the dollar.

“The development is indeed affecting sales and business because many builders have put a stop to their building and other construction projects because they cannot cope with the present high cost of the product.

Another resident, Mr Clement Igbo, who owns a block moulding industry, said that the high cost of cement was hampering production, saying that he no longer produced maximally due to lack of buyers.

“A bag of Dangote cement which is one of the best products for our business is selling for N4500 and it is difficult to buy at this prevailing price and make enough production.

“We sell six inch and nine-inch block before this price increase at N150 and N200 but now 6 inch-block is sold at N220 while the 9-inch sells for between N250 and N300 respectively.

“Many block industries in the town have closed down production while some have compromised standard which pose great dangers to the building industry,” Igbo said.

He expressed fears that the high cost of cement which had led to improper ‘mixture’ of concretes for building purpose might affect quality and standard of buildings.

Mr Jerry Onwe, an economic activist urged the Federal and state governments to revive moribund cement factories across the states to meet the increasing demands of cement consumption in Nigeria.

He noted that the quest for mass housing for poor Nigerians would remain elusive if urgent steps were not taken to address the high cost of building materials in Nigeria.

“In a nation where an average worker earns N30,000 monthly as take-home wage, how can such a person afford a house of his own in view of the prevailing price of building materials?

“We have reached a cross road as far as the issue of building materials is concerned and this is a time for government to intervene and bring the situation under control.

“The Nkalagu Cement Factory in Ebonyi is capable of supply the cement needs of the entire South-East if properly revived,” Onwe said.

Three days after bandits released five students out of the 39 abducted from Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka in Kaduna State, five more students have been freed.

This brings to 10, the total number of students that have been released while those still in captivity are 29.

Daily Trust gathered that the students who just regained freedom are currently on their way to the hospital.

Reliable sources told Daily Trust that four male and a female students were picked up by policemen around Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

One of the sources, a security agent, told our correspondent that plans are being made for the students to be moved to a police facility for treatment.

Five students, who were released by bandits on Monday, were later picked up by the Nigerian Army and conveyed to an army hospital for health evaluation.

One of the earlier released students, Francis Paul, had narrated how the bandits selected five of them and asked them to mount motorbikes after which they were dropped off on a highway.

Daily Trust had reported that following continuous negotiations between the bandits and parents of the students, the bandits hinted that the students would be released in batches.

This is the second batch of release; the first batch comprise of Mary Danladi, Abubakar Yakubu, Francis Paul, Obadiya Habakkuk and Amina Yusuf who were reunited with their family on Wednesday.

When contacted for additional information, Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige, did not respond to several calls.

IBADAN – No fewer than six people have been paraded in Ibadan Oyo State Capital, for selling human party (Heart) at the rate of N10,000.

Parading the suspects at the State Police Headquarters Eleyele Ibadan on Thursday, the State Police Commissioner, CP. Ngozi Onadeko gave the name of the suspects as Jimoh Sabiku ‘m’ age 35 years, Adesola David ‘m’ age 24 years, Bello Waheed ‘m’ age 45 years, Habeeb Musa ‘m’ age 34 years, Musibau Aroju ‘m’ age 51 years

Onadeko said sometimes in the month of January 2021, stressing that one Jimoh Sabiku approached one Musibaudeen Aroju ‘m’ that he needed a human heart for money ritual of which the said Musibaudeen Aroju ‘m’ replied him that he will introduce a person that can get the Human heart for him which he thereafter introduced one Alfa Taofeek a.k.a Karile to the said Jimoh Sabiku.

The said Alfa Taofeek thereafter got the human heart to Jimoh Sabiku at Saki town on Thursday 18th March, 2021 at the sum of Ten thousand naira. Jimoh Sabiku later gave the human heart to one Adesola David to be delivered to one Bello Waheed at Igbeti.

Speaking on how the suspects were arrested, the CP said, on 19th March, 2021 at about 1500hrs, the said Adesola David was intercepted while on Bajaj motorcycle with registration number AYE 125 QE by men of Federal Highway Patrol team who were on Stop and Search duty at Forest area along Igbeti/Igboho road when the said Adesola David together with one Habib Musa were searched, the heart suspected to be human heart were found on them. However, one Alfa Taofeek ‘m’ a.k.a Karile who sold the heart suspected to be human heart to one Jimoh Sabiku ‘m’ at the rate of N10,000 is now at large and effort is been intensified to arrest him.

In a similar situation, another suspect was paraded with bones and flesh suspected to be human parts.

CP. Onadeko said, on 4th April, 2021 at about 1000hrs Police Operatives from Mapo Divisional Police headquarters Ibadan accosted one Azeez Akinolu Wasiu ‘m’ an herbalist at Alakuko area Ibadan with rotten flesh and bones suspected to be human part and the suspect was transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department SCID on 6th April, 2021.

Onadeko maintained that upon interrogation, the suspect confessed that he got the dry bones at Elegbo cemetery in Oyo town. He further confessed that he got the flesh from a dead body supposedly killed during Shasha crisis in February 2021 along Moniya/Oyo express way Ibadan. He said he wanted to use the parts for money ritual. Investigation is still in progress.

Exhibit recovered from the suspect are one dried bone and flesh suspected to be Human part.
