International observers have applauded the conduct of Saturday's presidential election but have cited several areas that need to be improved upon ahead of the governorship polls next week.

The Commonwealth, National Democratic Institute (NDI), European Union (EU) and the International Republican Institute issued separate post-election assessments yesterday amid reports of violent protest against the outcome of the election in Kano, Kaduna and Bauchi states.

The Commonwealth mission said the April 2011 elections marked a "genuine celebration of democracy" in Nigeria saying that previous notions that the nation can only hold flawed elections be discarded.

Mr Mogae admitted that the parliamentary polls had procedural problems although there were improvements. Asked whether he would advise Nigerians to accept the outcome of the polls, he said: "I say yes," adding that the imperfections noticed do not point to deliberate "mischief." The NDI said its observation unveiled the inadequacies of the "complicated and multi-tiered" collation process which the mission said was vulnerable to human error and manipulation as tabulation proceeds from the polling unit to the electoral office.

As the statements were read on Monday in Abuja, fears mounted about the breakdown of law and order in the Federal Capital Territory as clashes erupted in Dutse, Mararaba areas of the Federal Capital Territory with no certain number of casualties.

Already, the NDI led by the former Canadian Prime Minister, Joe Clark, said its coverage of the pre-election and the election days, showed there have been 135 politically-motivated deaths.

The election monitoring teams condemned the renewed unrest yesterday urging aggrieved candidates in the polls to seek judicial redress.

"Any post election violence will be regrettable," said Festus Mogae, the chief observer of the Commonwealth team and former president of Botswana. "If it is happening, it is regrettable."

Assessment

The monitors praised the poll on the one hand and on the other, criticised series of processes from the accreditation to counting of results although they agree the setbacks were minimal to affect the wider result for the entire nation.

The teams complained about overcrowded polling stations despite claims by the Independent National Electoral Commission that sub voting units will be established for centres beyond 300 voters.

The EU team observed that for 633 random polling units it monitored across the 36 states, only 14% were split as INEC directed with the rest having an average 860 voters.

Attempts to induce voters were noticed in 17 percent, while party agents interfered in 26%. In spite of these, counting was overall evaluated positively in 91%, it said

DARN! grin It is obvious they are not blaming PDP but JEGA for their loss. What!!! I need to attach that program to my bank account. The software will identify account held by key words (Dangote, Otedola, Adenuga, etc) and just tick a kobo every sec for one week. Dont want to be greedy now o.

These dumb ass keep giving me sound offs in terms of jokes to tease my educated northern friends who currently find this funny as I am writing and cursing from both sides of their mouth.
By the way they voted Goodluck and over time confirmed that Buhari is feared by the elite North because of his supposedly incorruptible nature, thus a lot of northern politicians and business men worked against him because they are not sure what Buhari is going to bring to the table.

I mean I respect Buhari a lot but this crying baby game is entirely unacceptable. Banza says my friend as I typing….lol.

PoliticsUgly Head Of Extremism Buried Today In Nigeria by Savedelta(op): 11:45pm On Apr 17, 2011
This election revealed a lot more than voting lines in Nigeria. It revealed moderates and extremist individuals across North and South. Extremist Christains and Muslims who feel they have a claim to power as a leverage to push for their extreme religious views but God almighty came through.

I urge my extreme friends on NL to learn to love their fellow Man (man/-woman).

PoliticsRe: James Ibori Extradited To London by Savedelta(op): 6:03pm On Apr 15, 2011
VOTE PAUL OBANUA CDC in Delta State. He is calling for changeand together we Deltans can save Delta state.

PoliticsJames Ibori Extradited To London by Savedelta(op): 5:52pm On Apr 15, 2011
For those of you who think Gej is complacent with corruption , think again Vote Goodluck Jonathan for President.

James Ibori, the former governor of Delta state, was finally extradited to United Kingdom today after the London Metropolitan police foiled his latest plot to flee from the United Arab Emirates through a series of complex legal manipulations he hatched in Dubai.

Ibori was re-arrested last night in his Dubai mansion and taken to an extradition processing center from where he was later flown to the UK. He is expected arrive in London at about 1:00p.m. local time.

SaharaReporters learnt from UAE government sources that the former governor was accompanied by officers of the UK Metropolitan police Proceeds of Crimes Unit.

Ibori will face three separate trials in the UK relating to money laundering and theft. Some of his accomplices, including his wife, Theresa; his sister, Christine Ibie-Ibori; and a mistress, Udoamaka-Okoronkwo (nee Onuigbo), are already spending prison terms in various jail houses in the UK. Just over a week ago, on April 1, his UK lawyer, Bhadresh Gohil, was given a 10-year sentence. The sentence will run concurrently with a previous seven-year conviction.

Ibori's extradition was finally granted in December 2010 by the Court of Cessation in Dubai, but with the aid of Nigerian officials he made a series of attempts to escape from the UAE. Recently, in a secretly packaged deal, Ibori was granted bail from detention in Dubai, but a series of exposés from SaharaReporters frustrated his success.

SaharaReporters had also reported on the efforts of Goodluck Jonathan to have Ibori returned to Nigeria, where the government had previously helped him to escape conviction in a manipulated corruption trial. Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mohamed Adoke travelled to London several times to negotiate the deal but it was scuttled when SaharaReporters broke the story.

Ibori’s extradition marks a curious return to the scene of his earliest recorded crimes. As a worker in London, he was twice convicted for two criminal offences before he returned to Nigeria and went into the business full time as a politician.

Coming on the day before Nigeria’s most important election since independence, this is a fortuitous story,” an analyst told SaharaReporters in Lagos today. “In a country where impunity has taken the place of justice, Ibori’s extradition from a foreign country to another is at once a description of the sadness of our past, a critical comment on our present and a warning about the future.”
