Nigeria did not come this way over night and as a non-political ordinary Nigerian youth, I commend change when I see one. In my recent research I have seen some good stuffs about the new SGF. His full name is Boss Gida Mustapha. The word GIDA in hausa as translated in English means Home. And I hope in him the secretariat of Nigeria which he will be handling will be real home for all. I also hope he will tighten up the administrative lapses the secretariat has been known for in recent times. Below is few stuff you should know about Boss 1. A SELFLESS RE BUILDER: Boss is from Garaha an agrarian community seriously affected by Boko Haram onslaught in the north-eastern state of Adamawa. The man is said to have been rebuilding some major infrastructures single handedly with his money. According to Sunday Sun Nov 2017, Gahara currently has a road network, electricity project, and a church building all of which were destroyed by the insurgents but which are currently being reconstructed by Mustapha with a view to restoring hope to his people, who lost almost everything except the will to go on, to insurgency. This kind of selflessness should be applauded in our society. Nigeria has lived with politicians who has never given back to the community. 2. HE IS A TECHNOCRAT I have background in Public administration myself and I can tell you from history professionals are the best to implement policies of government. Boss seems to fit perfectly into this realm. Aside being a lawyer, he is a management consultant, politician, businessman and boardroom guru. He is a committed member of Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship, where he currently holds the position of National Vice President, Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International Nigeria is Christian association of private sector business men who combines business ethics with Christian virtue. This shows he can do better by bringing his private sector experience to the public sector. 3. HE HAS EXPERIENCE IN PUBLIC SECTOR ADMINISTRATION. According to Nigerianbulletin, Boss Gida Mustapha was once the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National inland waterways Authority (NIWA). This agency is a revenue generation agency. His experience here can be a better advantage since he would have been familiar with how government works. 4. HE HAS GOOD HOME TRAINING. I believe, many of the societal problems is generated from home. However, from my perceptions, teachers are the best people to train a child in terms of mannerism. For boss, He was trained by a teacher. Mr. Wesley Mustapha (his father) was a teacher and later headmaster at Central Primary School, Yola, Adamawa. His father later rose through the ranks to becoming a commissioner in the ministry of education in the then Gongola state. This shows he must be well schooled and learned unlike our perception about the educational standards in the north. 5. HE CAN MEND FENCES. Yesterday being 6th November 29017, I learnt Boss swung into action by organizing a meeting with the National Assemblies. This is very un-real in Buhari administration who has over 2 years been at lodger heads with the senate and the house of rep. With less than 21 days in office, the new SGF have been able to organize a successful dialogue with the NASS for a cordial legislative- executive relationship. This shows he is a man of peace and a good negotiator. I hope he can fast track nest year budget passage. 6. CHRISTIAN BACKGROUND There are certain Christian value that is good for our polity. “His father, who died in 2013 and his wife Benedicta Wesley (still alive) were very dedicated Christians, who trained Boss and his four other siblings: Mrs. Daloney Attah, Flora, Blessing and Charity Mustapha, to be dedicated Christians and they take to that training. Mustapha was never a troublesome child; he was never a child that his parents had to worry about. He was dedicated to his Sunday school and has always been a man of the people. A nairalader once confirmed him as a person with humility in their church. This means he has some good Christian virtue. 7. A GLOBAL LAWYER He earned his Bachelor of Law, LL.B from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1979 and was called to bar in 1980. In addition to being a professional member of NBA, he is also a member of various global professional bodies including African Bar Association (ABA), Commonwealth Lawyers Association, International Bar Association (IBA) and Human Rights Institute (HRI). Tis shows that Mr. Mustapha’s accomplishments go beyond politics and the Bar. 8. HE HAS BEEN AROUND IN POLITICS AT STRATEGIC LEVEL. According to Dailypost article published in Oct 30, Mustapha was member Federal Republic of Nigeria Constituent Assembly (1988-1989), Chairman People’s Solidarity Party-Gongola State (1989-1990), state chairman, Social Democratic Party-Gongola State (1990-1991); he was even a gubernatorial candidate for SDP in Adamawa state in 1991. To me buhari has a lot of people who have no expeience in politics and that is hampering his chances of effective administration. I belive Boss is witty and he is familiar with the political terrain . Mustapha was the Deputy National Chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria from 2010 to 2013. In 2007, he again played a prominent role, serving as the Deputy Director General of the party’s Presidential campaign Organization. 9. HE UNDERSTAND THE APC PROMISES Many of us including myself knows that the APC has not lived up to expectation. Their promises though hindered by recession caused by our lack of savings is yet to gain the needed applause by the ordinary man. Hence, an SGF who is part of the campaign team of the APC should be the right person to professionally actualize the needed policy implementation. From record, Boss was a member of NCC and Secretary APC Presidential Campaign Organization Mobilization (2015) and member, APC Transition Committee (2015). He is also a member, APC Board of Trustees. This shows he is core part of the party and he knows their promises. I am sure the president wife can attest to this. LOL |

Restructuring By Pius Adesanmi Nigerians are all talking about restructuring. Now, that is funny. There are two types of Nigerians: those in government and those awaiting their turn in government. Forget all the talk about the size and potential of Nigeria’s economy. Forget all the talk about business, entrepreneurship, innovation, and the rise of a vibrant new demographic of creators defying the odds to crystallize into a 21st-century transnational elite. That is all puff and powder for there is really only one business in Nigeria and it is called government. Everybody is just really waiting for and on government. Every other sector and sphere of Nigerian life and all the players in all those private spheres and sectors are merely waiting on and for their turn in government. In Nigerian life, there is no creativity, no aspiration, no vision, no mission, no genius, and no dream beyond “joining government”. The sum total of national life is nothing but an endless footsy playing between those in government and those outside, hoping to cajole them to be let in or scheming to shove them out and take their place. Either by election or appointment, a Nigerian has no greater definition of success and life fulfilment than a political office, no matter how paltry and insignificant. This atrocious national sociology of course has consequences. It is at the centre of the Nigerian tragedy. At the personal and national levels, it stifles growth, initiative, and development because the citizen and his nation are defined exclusively by prebend. The citizen destroys all regenerative and innovative possibilities because his creative energy has only one purpose: profit from government prebend (if he is already in government) or aspire to profit from government prebend (if he is awaiting his turn in government). Nigeria is the only place where the path to building a global business brand, powered by genius, innovation, creativity, entrepreneurial spirit and drive can be abandoned midway to serve as a Special Assistant to a Special Adviser on Miscellaneous Matters in the Presidency. The owner of a flourishing innovation hub or a growing e-commerce outlet will drop all that creative energy and suddenly become a Special Assistant to a Governor or a Senator. In Nigeria, do not be surprised to wake up to news that Dangote is abandoning the Dangote Group to run for even governor. Instead of joining Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos on a panel in Davos, do not be surprised to hear that the owner of Konga.com or Nairaland has accepted an appointment as a Special Assistant on New Media to a state governor. In essence, any Nigerian great news on the innovation front is only great until government appointment happens to it because every other sphere of agency in Nigeria is tentative and aspirational in a move towards government and mediocrity and corruption. Take a look at Rochas Okorocha. He has been busy ruining Imo state on the platform on APC and change. His destruction of Imo is a greater tragedy because it is collective and affects our fellow citizens. However, there is also his self-destruction. He had a robust business brand that could have become an Africa brand on its way to the global level had he continued to devote his creative energies to it. The Nigerian thing happened to him and he decided to aim for the sun of Aso Rock Villa before ending up with the consolation moon of Government House in Owerri. It is true that many of these people abandon potential global brands for life in government because of the belief that they will loot with impunity, and divert public funds and government patronage to their businesses. They forget that all their stealing and looting has never taken any of their businesses to a truly global dimension because no truly global brand can be built on a foundation of such brazen rottenness. The money they steal and infuse into their businesses is only Pyrrhic victory. Obasanjo Holdings is one of the greatest beneficiaries of loot, corruption, nepotism, and government patronage in Nigeria. Baba stole Nigeria black and blue and poured everything into his business. Obasanjo Holdings is not a recognizable African brand, let alone a global brand. It is a local champion in a local field where Baba is doing gragra and harassing people. When he gallivants the world stage, it is because he ruled the largest concentration of black people for 8 years and not on the basis of his entrepreneurial brand. In Davos, he will have to book an appointment with Zuckerberg and Bezos. There is also of course the story of Orji Uzor Kalu’s Slok – another innovative business brand that government office happened to and destroyed. The business people are not the only class affected by this Nigerian disease. Generations of the country’s brightest minds go to government, when they leave government, they do not return to any worthwhile ventures and activities that could uplift the country because they understand that life in Nigeria is divided into two strict phases: life in government and life spent awaiting life in government. I live in a part of the world where people have time for short spells in government appointments before returning to other spheres of nation building. Academia is a very popular destination for people after government office. They come and join us in training the next generation. Look at journalism and mass communication schools in the US and Canada. Very often, people quit influential government spokesperson positions to become Deans or Chairs of such schools or programs. They don’t have to be academics. Universities negotiate with them on the basis of their profile and experience. You come to Nigeria and you get Reuben Abati – a brilliant first class mind that any school of journalism or mass communication in Nigeria should be privileged to engage as Dean or Chair. What is he doing? He is roaming social media to maintain relevance in preparation for any possibility of returning to government in 2019. One of Nigeria’s best minds now understands that there is only life in government and life spent awaiting a return to government. The Right Reverend Wendel Simlin, also known as Reno Omokri, falls into this category. Before he discovered the tragic duality of Nigerian life, he was actually a bright mind on the rise in the United States. Now, he too is roaming social media, carefully curating his nuisance value to maintain visibility ahead of the possibility of a return to government in 2019, accompanied by fellow vermin, Femi Fani-Kayode. Think of Abati as Head of Mass Communication in Unilag; think of Omokri in some innovative new program in any of our Universities. No matter what you think of them, they would serve Nigeria’s future excellently in such stations. Sadly, they are like fish out of water, unable to conceptualize agency and nation building outside of the sphere of government crumbs. I have used Abati and Omokri to illustrate the crematorium of talent and innovation that is Nigeria. Once you leave government, you are pretty much useless to Nigeria because your brain is colonized by the singular desire to return to government. You cannot even sustain a business after life in government. Look at Senator Smart Adeyemi, thrashing around like somebody high on paraga because there is no life for him outside of government. He is desperate to return. I have been preaching that the restructuring of the polity is not something that should be done outside of the restructuring of the psychology and the socializing narratives which frame the Nigerian mind. And we need to revamp civics to achieve this mental rewiring. You may well get your Biafra Republic. You may well get your Oodua Republic. You may well get your Arewa Republic. However, I pity those three putative Republics for they are going to be peopled by psychologies and mentalities shaped and nurtured by Nigeria. If you must have your three separate Republics, that is fine. I am a supporter of legitimate claims to self-determination and maybe I have read too many books to subscribe to the silly myth of the indissolubility or indivisibility of any nation-state that Professor Osinbajo and the Nigerian elite are peddling. However, do not go to Biafra, Oodua, and Arewa and continue to believe that life outside of government is life not worth living. Remember: that tragic sociology destroyed the Nigeria you are fleeing. Restructure your psychology before you leave. As for me and my house hold, we shall remain proud Nigerians. Too much sense in this write up, what do you think? |

So, you wanted to travel overseas to study and you chose the U.K. You had some cool friends of different ethnicities and for the first time you felt like you are part of the global scheme of things, you are international now! Then school finished and you realized that you had to go home , back to Nigeria, despite having spent millions of Naira to get that education. Well, at least now you are bigger than those that went to LASU right? Wrong!!! You are offered the same N40,000 jobs as the others. Meanwhile you had just congratulated Eric, remember, your classmate in the UK on his new job that pays him over €70,000 yearly. Sigh. If only you had chosen to school in a place that actually wants you to have a chance at getting a job after school like I don't know, maybe Germany ? Or at least some country in the Schengen region. humm....., I got this this morning from jobberman and i thought i should share. |

Mediocrity once again played herself into the heart of Nigerian data analysts as jobberman released 100 place to work. As an observer with core bias for HR, I think its rather an insult not just for HR guys in Nigeria but also to the apex regulator of the HR practice that a one time IT firm now dictate the pace of noble profession. Not trying to play the devil's advocate however, I did some research on jobberman site and discovered they actually ranked those who were their regular customers in the 2016 ahead of others. In case you don't wanna believe me check their site for 2016 job. Post. No doubt jobberman has helped recruiters solve the issue of shortlisting, but what I don't get is why should they assume HR data could be something they can just frame up for all to consume. For instance how could you explain airtel being a head of Schlumberger in terms of best place to work. its a simple logic how will airtel who pays her customer service officer N50,000 be ahead of Schlumberge who pays 200,000 for same position isnt Africans driven by cash again. . Even without any core research just ask 5 staff from those two companies you can see the loopholes. Imagine the Parameters? Jobberman claimed the use the following parameters 1. Job Security 2. Monthly Salary 3. Career Growth Prospects 4. Company Management 5. Work/Life Balance 6. Staff Welfare 7. Employee Relationship 8. Gender Equality 9. Organisational Structure This to a reasonable extent is great, but I cant still fathom they want us to believe that job is more secure in GTbank (ranked 6th), FirstBank (ranked 7th) and Union Bank (ranked 8th) than in FAAN (ranked 84th) of course its obvious the IT firm turned Consulting firm is a corporate Joker to have given such data knowing fully well that one of the reasons people could work in Government agancy such as FAAN is because of security of job. As if that was not enough, they ranked CBN 25th and made Airtel number 2nd in terms of career growth and prospect knowing fully well that those working in CBN dont leave untill they are due for retirement . let me not just bore you with too may fact. I write this to make us disregard their data and never make this a basis for job search strategy. This is because its obviously they are in for some stunt i really dont know.May be to make those companies ranked higher patronize them. I recall sometime in 2014, I had an interview session with jobberman and the the session turned out to be an avenue for begging for HR Template which I eventually give anyway. after which I turned down their offer. The other day a Lady called me from their office begging for Termination template and i was like dont you have HR manager? Its just crazy HR Practices is not given proper regulation in Nigeria and the Apex body such as Chartered Institute of Personnel Management is a mare rent collecting institution. Dear Niaraland, you guys should see below list as listed by Jobberman and see why I am Paraying. 1. General Electric 2. Airtel 3. Ericsson 4. Google 5. Shell 6. Guaranty Trust bank 7. First Bank 8. People have been saying Indian and Lebanese companies are never a great place to work and over time I had rebuked such argument because I assumed averagely some workers just want a quick fixes as far as work is concerned. Last Monday Feb 20th, I checked into one of our Branches in Adeola Odeku in Victoria Island Lagos, on my way back and I saw this gathering of young people in a protest mood just in front one of one of the tallest buildings on that street. They all held placards with the inscriptions such as, Say no to Racism, We are Tire of this Discrimination, We want Union, #HRMustGo. As a lover of the HR Profession, the latter attracted me and to satisfy my curiosity I moved closer to them to ask few questions and from my 30 Minutes interaction with them, I gathered the following about MitsubishiLift Nigeria Limited - the company. 1. MitsubishiLift Nigeria is a Lebanese company where Nigerians don’t go on annual leave or you go and never retirn. 2. Unionism is a total ban and the consequence is termination. 3. Bonds are signed that even at your spare time you cannot do any other work . 4. MitsubishiLift Nigeria claims that Nigerian Laws supports most of their short comings, hence they don’t care. 5. MitsubishiLift Nigeria Limited, don’t pay or remit tax to government despite being deducted from staff salary. They have their way with #LIRS. 6. In MitsubishiLift Nigeria Limited, You can’t go outside the office to eat. Meaning no break time. 7. No medical care provision for staff not even HMO as stated in the NHIS laws. 8. Nigerians are the mouth piece of most unprofessional practices in multinational Companies including Mitsubishi Lift one Man name Chris has sold Nigerians in Nigeria. 9. Racial discrimination is not about majority, it can also be about few powerful privilege ones who has seen the loopholes and again the negligence on the part of government is a major advantage to Multinational, hence they make use of that lapses to enslave people. This is for real in Mitsubishi Lift Nigeria Limited as the management calls the staff Junior gorillas, Monkeys etc. 10. At Mitsubishi, on a monthly basis your salary is deducted without proper explanation. Dear Nairalanders I take responsibility for this post because i experienced this protest live and below pictures says it all. However, having identified the above, I think there should be some solutions if you work in an environment, where similar culture is in practice. One of the solution is to protest and write to Nigerian Labour Congress or any area branch Trade unions just like this people did last week in Lagos. I think another issue is to shout it out loud on social media so that people know the kind of companies they shouldn’t go to be interviewed when they recruiting. Aside, other organisation shouldn't even patronize the service of vendors who cant treat people well. In conclusion, You may want to share your opinion if you work or once worked in similar company. Or you have insights on how to solve any of the unprofessional labour practice and let Nairalanders gain insights. Please share your thoughts below. Cheers
