Education / Winning Multiple Scholarships In Nigeria: 9 Tips From My Experience by scholarsarena: 6:57pm On Mar 19, 2018
Every year in Nigeria, various oil and gas companies, multi-national corporations and NGOs award hundreds of scholarships to Nigerian students in different tertiary institutions in the country.
They don’t do this because of the fun of dolling out cash to students but because it forms part of their corporate social responsibility which is an obligation under relevant Nigerian Laws.

Monetary value of these awards ranges from N50,000; N100,000; N150;000 to as high as N300,000.
The fun part of the process for beneficiaries is that these payments are made consistently every session as long you obey the terms and conditions of the awards.

I have shared a list of Top 20 Nigerian scholarships here for those who don’t have a clue as to the names, eligibility and worth of the various scholarships in Nigeria.

However, the questions on the lips of every student ignorant of these opportunities are: How to apply, when to apply, where to apply and most importantly, how to win.

Today, I wish to share with you, tips or more appropriately, secrets that helped me win five (5) different scholarships as an undergraduate in one of the Universities in Nigeria. Enjoy it!

#1. THE 80/20 PRINCIPLE:
You would agree with me that there are several legal ways of achieving a particular intended result in any Endeavour. There is the long way and of course the smart way, and scholarship pursuit isn’t immuned to the applicability of this rule.

My 80/20 scholarship pursuit principle simply posits that you should focus on the 20% of scholarships that relatively unknown to many students and are therefore very easy to win.
When you use this principle wisely, it helps you achieve the desired results as soon as possible.
For Instance, those who are in the know about Nigerian scholarships would readily agree with me that it is way easier to win Hillcity scholarship than the NNPC/Chevron scholarship.

So, why not focus more on those ones that are easier to clinch either because of lack of awareness or because the offer is limited to people in your field (eg. Agbami scholarship is for Medical and Engineering students only).

2. MAKE A LIST:
Trust me pal, you can never be qualified for all the undergraduate scholarships in Nigeria and it would be foolhardy to think otherwise.
Eligibility requirements vary and you may just be disqualified because of your level, cgpa, course of study, gender or even place of origin.

Therefore, the wisest thing to do is to make a list of scholarships you are eligible for, carve out some using the 80/20 principle as discussed above and commence your applications as they come up.
This will help you prepare in advance for each application as you already know what to expect as to requirements and of course where your application should go to.

3. EARLY APPLICATION IS BAE!
Something very funny but instructive happened to my friends and I in 2013 when I applied and won the NNPC/CHEVRON National Merit scholarship which was one of my five (5) scholarship awards in school.
We heard about the application few days after it started and we all resolved to apply.
However, whereas I and one other friend applied the following day, the rest didn’t apply till the last day of the application when they hurriedly did so.
When the company sent out invites for Exams, Two of us that applied on time got it while the other friends were not shortlisted for the exam.

What’s instructive here? Those friends who weren’t shortlisted for the exam and consequently didn’t get the scholarship had better qualifications for the award than us. They had better Jamb and O’level scores and even better CGPA.

There are thousands of students in various universities in Nigeria jostling and hustling for the available scholarships and the last thing you want is to come to the party late my dear.
The scholarship providers have a certain number they are working with and once they hit that number, then the party is over! It doesn’t matter that you have sterling records at that point, your application will be sent straight to trash.
So, if you want a seat at the table, always apply on time please.

4. PLAY BY THE RULES:
Now, every scholarship has its own eligibility criteria and it’s your job to read and obey them.
If documents must be in a particular format and size, obey it. Such trivial issues can earn you disqualification faster than ussain bolt can run.

Similarly, in making your application, be sure to obey every rule as listed out by the scholarship provider as those rules constitute disqualification parameters used by the providers to sift the grains from the chaff. Don’t be the chaff, obey the rules.

All documents submitted during applications are almost always subject to further verification in your school’s registrar’s office and you won’t be there to explain any variance or disparity.
So, there virtually no need to try cutting corners. This saves you time, stress and rewards you in ways you can’t imagine.

5. UNDERSTAND THE STAGES AND FOLLOW UP:
Believe me when I say that to begin scholarship pursuit without knowing the stages and what should be done in each of them is akin to taking a voyage in an uncharted route; You will hardly reach your destination in record time.
There is a need to learn the stages generally involved in getting Nigerian scholarships and follow each of them religiously and satisfying their demands.

The world is built on rules and processes; even God is a God of laws.
Scholarship awards have processes that prospective awardees must take to be qualified for such awards.
As a general rule, there are no general rules! Did that shock you?
Yes, every scholarship has its own distinct processes, requirements and stages.

However, almost all the scholarship have or follow the stages we shall discuss below.
(a) Call for Application:
Applications are usually invited from qualified students for grants and scholarship awards by the awarding company(s).
This may be done through their website, newspaper, e-mails and other general publications.
Normally, when call for application is made, many students from different parts of the country would apply and the company would screen the tons of applications and invite qualified students for exams or interview as the case may be.
The important things to do here is basically to prepare your documents and make your application in record time. When you pass this stage, you are a step closer to winning.

(b) Exam/Interview Stage:
The awarding company, through an already set standard, will determine eligible students from the applications received. The students will be shortlisted for a qualifying exam, interview or both in rare cases.
The company has the sole right to decide whether to use the exam method or interview method.

I usually advise my protégés to take the exam as a serious business in which they must be punctual to and observe all the rules of good conduct expected of them before, during and after the exams.

(c) Verification Stage:
Companies awarding scholarships do so with utmost carefulness and scrutiny to avoid giving awards or grants to these who do not need or merit it.
The companies, through their employees, visit the schools of prospective awards to confirm their status as students, CGPA and level.
In the application stage, the companies will state the eligibility criteria and that would always form the basis of their verification exercise.

Though most of the companies are rich and multi-national oil and gas companies, they do not go about throwing their resources around. They verify the status of every student who has passed their exam before awarding the student.
They may do this through the office of your Head of Department of office of the Dean.

(d) Awarding Stage:
This stage brings happiness to students as it crowns their efforts with success. Obviously, the companies, after the exam and students verification stages, would award the scholarships to deserving and successful students.
In making awards, the company may communicate the award notice to the successful students through email, text messages or through a letter sent to the schools of the students. However, general notification and news of the award will be online.
Now, award has been clinched but the award letter does not contain cash! Therefore, you are advised to study the award letter carefully to understand the terms and conditions of the award.
The award letter will also inform you the modality of payment.

One of your biggest obstacles in your way to scholarship success is your already won scholarship(s). Never allow the feeling that you have arrived to engulf or envelop you from vigorously pursuing other numerous scholarship offers.
There is always an award to be won and there is always more money to be made through it. So, why not want some more?

6. MARRY PAST QUESTIONS:
From my experience in writing over 10 scholarship exams, I have come to understand that the examiners repeat some of their questions every year and that gives you an edge if you are a smart student.
For instance, when I wrote SEPLAT SCHOLARSHIP online exam in 2015, I discovered that many of their questions were drawn from previous past questions I had earlier studied.
That alone helped me to easily pass the exams and consequently win the scholarship! So, go for past questions and study them before your exams.

You can Get Scholarship Past Questions Here

7. GET A MENTOR:
One of the most important factors that helped me win 5 scholarships in school was because I had a scholarship mentor.
When you have a mentor, you will stand on his or her shoulders to fly above your contemporaries. This is true because your mentor has made all the mistakes you will likely encounter and will help you avoid them!
However, your mentor must be someone who has good record in winning scholarships and must have the positive mindset to guide and motivate you for free.

8. MAINTAIN GOOD CGPA:
The importance of this is in two laps. One, poor cgpa would disqualify you from applying for many scholarship offers and the second is that poor cgpa can make you lose the scholarships you have won already.
You see, all the scholarships are subject to continuous good performance in school and the company won’t hesitate to withdraw your scholarship any year you fall below the acceptable CGPA. It may be 2.5, 3.0 or the general 3.5 on a scale of 5.0 which most scholarships use.

9. The God Factor:
Aside the easy scholarships, others are tough to win. So, when you do your best, pray to God or whatever you believe in.
That’s all for today fellow great Nigerian Students.

Do you have any question or challenge winning about any scholarship? Ask me and I will share what I know here!

Politics / Re: Buhari Not Responsible For Nigerians Woes – Afe Babalola by scholarsarena: 10:32pm On Mar 15, 2018
With all due respect to the SAN, I beg to disagree with most of his points.
Buhari and his government cannot be exonerated from the woes plaguing NIGERIA AND Nigerians.

This government's policies have made life Unbearable for average Nigerians as cost of living has quadrupled while salaries and income are either static or dwindling in most cases.
Buhari's government, through overt acts and omissions, has inadvertently divided Nigerians along ethnic, tribal and religious lines more than any other government in our history.

Again, Right to life is seen as the highest form of human right because it is only a living man that can enjoy other rights. Buhari's government has failed woefully to protect the lives and property of Nigerians which is the first and most fundamental duty of a government.
If Buhari didn't win the 2015 elections, there are high chances that thousands of people who have lost their lives or those of their loved ones would still be alive now to fulfill their purpose in Life.

Imagine if Buhari was from benue and he was murdered at a tender age by marauding herdsmen, would he be president today?

Politics / Buhari Not Responsible For Nigerians Woes – Afe Babalola by scholarsarena: 10:32pm On Mar 15, 2018
Legal icon Aare Afe Babalola SAN has said that it would be wrong to blame President Muhammadu Buhari for the current rots in the system.

Babalola, founder Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), disclosed that Nigeria’s problem is deeper than what the citizens often discussed.

Speaking after being honoured by Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Babalola urged Nigerian youths to rise up, unite and rescue the nation from its myriads of challenges.

The Founder traced the nation’s problem to military incursion of 1966.

He was decorated with the Sir Ahmadu Bello Platinum Award as the ‘The Icon of Greater Nigeria’ and Garkuwan Matasan Arewa Najeriya by the youth group.

The Aare Bamofin of Yorubaland charged Nigerian youths to move out of their various regional enclaves and form a virile national body,

This, he said would give them a strong voice.

“The essence of government is to guarantee the security of lives and property of the people. President Buhari is not to blame for this insecurity but the military.

“Before military took over in 1966, Nigeria was operating regional system with each region growing and developing faster at its own pace.

“These regions were closer to the people. Killings or insurgency were alien to our culture then. Nigerians love one another, though they were divided politically.

“I want to say that if those regions were allowed then, the country would have had a nation or nations that are well developed today,” he said.

Babalola regretted how Nigerians were dying due to leadership failure, particularly the civil servants and pensioners due to non-payment of their entitlements.

“Many pensioners have died having been owed several years of pension arrears. Even those in the service were owed seven or eight months salary arrears, so just like I said earlier, our leaders have turned us into beggars,” he lamented.

Talking about the vision of his university, which was to build the youth into a reliable future leaders, Babalola told the group that many of the rich men in the Northern part of Nigeria have financial wherewithal to establish such fast-growing university.

“There are many rich people in Nigeria who can establish this kind of university with the vision to bring quality education as well as moral and cultural values to the doorstep of Nigerians.

“If we have this kind of university in each of the six geopolitical zones or every state, Nigeria will change for better.

“Go to the North and propagate the ideals which my university stands for. Nigeria must be united at all cost for us to make a headway and overcome all our challenges,” Babalola stated.

The leader of the youth group, Mr. Steven Bidemi, said the honour was in recognition of Babalola’s contributions to humanity and the unity of the Nigerian nation.

“At a time when Nigeria youth are facing relegation from the scheme of things, Babalola continued to exhibit youth friendly vision which gave us a renewed hope as leaders of tomorrow.

“Chief Babalola is a symbol of a true Nigeria where unity, love, integrity compassion and brotherhood take a sit at the high table. He is a true representation of Sardauna’s philosophy, which was about religious and ethnic tolerance,” he said.

Education / Prof G.C. Nwakoby Emerges As New Acting V.C. Of Chukuemeka Ojukwu University. by scholarsarena: 8:24pm On Mar 15, 2018
Professor Gregory Chukwudi Nwakoby has been appointed as the new Acting vice chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, Uli and Igbariam campuses, Anambra State.

He is a professor of Law with a specialty in international and municipal Arbitration. He is also a visiting professor of Law to many Universities in Nigeria including but not limited to Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Ebonyi state University, Abakaliki.

The newly appointed Acting Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, Uli and Igbariam campuses, Anambra State, Prof. Gregory Chukwudi Nwakoby, has warned that on no account should the academic excellence and standard already institutionalized in the institution be compromised.

He noted that one way of maintaining the existing standards and possibly improving upon them is by ensuring that students who pass through the university are well groomed, with their certificates earned by sheer dint of hard work, while discipline remains the watchword of both the staff and students.

Nwakoby who spoke to newsmen yesterday in his office at Igbariam campus of the university shortly after he resumed work as the Acting VC, having just been appointed by Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state to take over from the outgoing VC, Prof. Fidelis Okafor, said he would also work towards improving the existing facilities on ground.

According to him, “everybody here will get his or her lawful rights complete and I will expect everybody to reciprocate that gesture by being reasonable and focused in our collective march towards excellence.

“I know that disputes and differences are natural in comity of humans but such disputes must be reasonable enough and when they come, I will handle them as an expert in dialogue and crisis management.

“Governor Obiano has invested a lot of resources here but we want more facilities like faculty buildings, classrooms, hostels and more of such and my primary duty here is to ensure that the existing facilities on ground are improved upon, apart from maintaining quality standard of education and discipline,” he assured

suspected fulani herdsmen have butchered a farmer in his farmland in Izzi local government of Ebonyi state.
The Izzi people, in recent past, gave the fulani community a large ecpanse of land to settle down in the locality and the host community has known no peace since then.

Tragic events and tolls of unreported massacres are going on in different parts of Ebonyi state and the state Government seems to be incapacitated and completely oberwhelmed by the situation.

This is a call on Ebonyi state government to rise up to the occasion and tame this ugly trend before it escalates futher.

1. The JAMB exams have lost credibility. Results cannot be challenged and failure of the exams means an automatic 1yr delay since there is no resit until a year later. A remedy here would be to have a 2 or 3month resit, or an alternative exam as is the case of WAEC & NECO.

2. A private tertiary institution should have the right to determine the standard of candidates it wishes to admit. The public schools may maintain the status quo.

Aside the legality or otherwise of post utmes, What if we can, through enforcement and enhancement, reform Jamb to perfom it's statutory functions effectively amd credibly.
Would there still be a need for post utme sir?
If your answer is in the negative, then it means we all should insist that jamb lives up to expectation.

However, until such reformation, enforcement or enhancement is made, the law should be followed and obeyed "the way it is" and not "the way it ought to be."

So it now they know it illegal. Smh.
The court is not a father christmas or a meddlesome interloper sir.
The court can only decide or make pronouncement on matters before it. It thus mean that someone must cause the court to move.
In this case, a civil society group approached the court to stop the illegal extortion of students every year in the guise of post utmes by universities all of the country.

Among other prayers as reported above, the court granted a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from further engaging in the illicit act.

This isn't good news to those profiteering from the hitherto existing illegality!

On point

Very much on point sir.
This is a land mark decison by the FHC Abuja.
Post utme is simply a duplication of Jamb's statutory function.
If the jamb Act via the relevant sections has empowered it to conduct admission and matriculation exercises, then Jamb should rightly exercise that power exclusively.
Post utmes organized by universities therefore cast doubts on the credibilty of jamb in the exercise of it's statutory powers.

It's a welcome development anyway.
Education / Court Declares Post Utme Exams Illegal. by scholarsarena: 11:54pm On Mar 03, 2018
A Federal High Court, Abuja on Friday, 02 March 2018 declared the Post- Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) conducted by universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in Nigeria as illegal, saying there was no extant law authorising the exercise.

The court held that only the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) could conduct matriculation examinations and give admissions into tertiary institutions by virtue of section 5 (1) (2) of the JAMB Act.

In the judgment, delivered in the suit filed by the Legal Defence
and Assistance Project (LEDAP) against JAMB, the Minister of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC), Justice John Tsoho held that the defendants have no power to allow or direct tertiary institutions to conduct further screening of candidates after they had taken the UTME. He court further issued a perpetual injunction restraining all tertiary institutions in the country from conducting the Post-UTME or any other form of admission screening tests.

In opposing the suit, JAMB had argued that LEDAP had no locus standi to bring the action, but the court rejected the objection and held that a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO) or an activist lawyer is allowed by law to pursue in court, the right of the largely ignorant members of the society.

LEDAP had submitted that Section 5(1)(2) of the JAMB Act provides that the body should conduct matriculation examinations for admissions into all tertiary institutions after the UTME. Subsection (2) (3) provides: “JAMB shall be responsible for determining matriculation requirements and conducting examinations leading to undergraduate admissions and also for admission to National Diploma and the Nigerian Certificate in Education courses.”

The plaintiff had submitted that since 2005, tertiary institutions nationwide have been illegally conducting tests and screening candidates seeking admission in violation of section 5(10)(2) of the JAMB Act.

The court agreed with the plaintiff and further held that the defendants have the responsibility to ensure compliance with the JAMB Act and that the imposition of the Post-UTME on candidates seeking admission was illegal and unlawful.

Here we go again...

Today,it's First Class :- The Hidden Secret Keys,
Tomorrow,Second Class Upper :-Their Roles In Society,
Next,it is 2.2 graduates and how to package your CV,
Furthermore, you still see things such as 3rd class and ways to go around the veil of unemployment.

You people keep giving fleshy attributes to things that doesn't matter anymore. You keep holding onto bygone things such as degrees. It is always good and relevant to attend a University (I won't subscribe a polythecnic. It's a waste of time),but at this point in time, you need not pay attention to degrees anymore. I tell some of my friends who came out with very strong degrees in OAU (which is also my Alma mata) especially in fields of Tech and Engineering to set it aside and tell me what they can do with it. They instantly go dumb and start chest beating about their valour and prowess in academics and blaming me for studying English Language .

What is the essence of the grades when you can't solve my problem which is related to your field? Your are a mech Eng grad and you can't give me a mini farm tractor or even it's caricature for my agro business and you call yourself a First Class genius?you are useless to me as an agropreneur and the Nation at large in terms of Agriculture and diversification. What is your essence on earth when as a Computer Science grad, you can't even build an Android or mobile App which me as an English language graduate has become a guru in?then you are just as useless as a cigarette butt. You are a graduate of Bio Chem, have you asked your self; what is my essence and input into the economy of the country? I see people study Physics in Nigerian institutions and wonder if they would ever be called Scientists or even physicists like their counterparts from MIT and other top notch institutions around the world.

I wonder if the likes of John Rockerfella had that much classroom exposure before he ventured into Gasoline and Kerosene,as no one ever addressed him as a petrochemical engineer or did Henry Ford who gave us Automobile was ever adresssed as a Mechanical Engineer. If we put them side by side with the so called First Class or our everly sound erudite Professors,i wonder who Nigerians would adresss as dullards or illetrate.

While others are going about, inventing and breaking grounds in Science, Medicine, Technology and, Weapons development, our First Class graduates and other strong degree holders are here running around with their impressive CVs looking and praying for that impressive elusive sweet job.

Conversely, I'm not insinuating that you should forgo your academics, but make sure that when you get that grade, be it First Class or Pass, determine the course of your race, change the lives of your fellow Africans with ground breaking developments and inventions or just go into areas where the economy needs you the most which to me is; Tech, Agriculture and, Power.

I have done my part as a Nigerian, though I'm not even 25yet, and not yet mobilised for NYSC, I can boast today of being a Software developer(Java), Android developer, Blogger and, Agropreneur. What do you thing would happen to my life before I clock 35?dont you think by then, I would have become a massive employer of labor? Both skilled and unskilled waiting on me to give them their monthly stipend in form of salaries. Its not because I'm more intelligent than the assumed first-class holders but because I was able to key into the Nigerian dream which has eluded and blinded some people. You can't make your money in the US or say other developed countries ,you can only do that in developing countries like Nigeria with a very huge and powerful economy and population,or do you think Nigerians would feed on prayers rather than food or Agricultural products? kiss .

Finally, me as a person, immediately after my NYSC I'll get my Masters degree in a different course entire maybe in Archeology,History,International relations, Metaphysis,or Theology and then proceed for my PhD in any of those courses but in leisure and I don't see myself job hunting with it in a thousand years because I believe learning is meant for self development and evolution and not running around on ties and suits in sun.. Trust me those courses are quite interesting only when you are doing it without the stress of searching for a living with it.

Nevertheless, as a social media influencer, Mr Jarushub, you and your team, should girdle up your loins and re-brain wash these first class dreamers to attend more entrepreneur and Tech seminars and agro business seminars on campus like TedX and the likes, even if it implies paying fees to register for such. I know they would listen to you smiley

Post No Bill

I am in love with your ideas and propositions my brother.
True Education is meant to change your thought pattern and revolutionize your acts not to package you for job hunting!
The earlier we all get this, the better for us.
