Education / 228 Kwali Students Get FCT Scholarships by scholarsarena: 2:58am On Jan 18, 2018
The deputy director of the FCT scholarship board, Mr. Adagasu Dauda Benjamin, has said 228 indigenous students in Kwali Area Council will receive scholarship disbursement this year.

Benjamin stated this when he led members of the FCT scholarship board and executives of the Abuja Indigenous Students Association (AISA), to present a letter of scholarship for the successful students to the chairman of Kwali Area Council, Mr. Joseph K. Shazin, in his office on Tuesday.

He said the 228 students were the successful candidates who are studying at various tertiary institutions across the country and abroad.

He said disbursement of the scholarship would cut across all the six area councils.

The council chairman, Mr. Shazin, thanked the FCT scholarship board for accommodating 228 indigenous students of the council in the scheme, saying that the scholarship support would reduce the burden on parents in the area.

“I also want to inform the FCT scholarship board that we at the council have not rested on our oars in seeing that education, especially that of the girl-child is given the priority attention it deserves,” he said

Career / 7 Success Lessons From Legendary Muhammad Ali. by scholarsarena: 2:15am On Jan 18, 2018
He said; ‘I am the greatest’, and people heard and took him seriously.

You bet, had it not been Muhammad Ali saying that, people would have already left and never heard him again!

This is exactly where Muhammad Ali differed from other known and not so known athletes of the world. Clearly, Ali left no stone un-turned in captivating the attention of his audience through his words and punches, literally and figuratively of course!

He was undeniably a monster in the ring, a powerful physical prowess; however, not many know that he also served as a United Nations Messenger of Peace. Even more, in the year 1990, Muhammad Ali met Saddam Hussein to negotiate the release of American hostages!

There are two fundamental things anyone can learn from meeting Muhammad Ali or by reading his book: on being successful in a sport, and, more importantly, being a good human being.

Unarguably, you and I can learn a lot from Muhammad Ali. Below mentioned are 7 success lessons from legendary Muhammad Ali.

1. Have a Higher Purpose.

Muhammad Ali once said:

“We have one life; it soon will be past; what we do for God is all that will last.”

You don’t have to be religious or a firm believer in God to comprehend the mentioned quote.
All you need to know is that you need to suffice a higher purpose in your life to live a fulfilling and satisfying life. Pick a higher purpose that is close to your heart. It could be anything that gives you satisfaction, from helping those in need on the streets to raising strong and good children.

The point is, you need a goal that goes above accumulating a certain percentage of wealth and assets. Have a higher purpose in life.

2. Learn to Sacrifice Your Comforts

This particular success lesson does not come easy for most of us, but in order to live comfortably tomorrow, you need to sacrifice something today. Why do you think so few people become incredible in what they do?

It’s because they have learned to sacrifice their comforts for a better tomorrow. Muhammad Ali said (and, rightfully so):

“I run on the roads, long before I dance under the lights. I hated every minute of my training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion’.”

Regardless of what your goals in life are, you will always hate some tasks. Ensure that you don’t quit even when you hate something. Remember, it too shall pass!

3. Greatness is a Choice You Make For Yourself

“I would have been the world’s greatest at whatever I did. If I were a garbage man, I’d be the world’s greatest garbage man! I’d pick up more garbage and faster than anyone has ever seen. To tell you the truth, I would have been the greatest at whatever I’d done!”

His words were truly admirable. You and I don’t have to start speaking like him and believing that I will be great at a particular job.

Broadly speaking, the point here is about choosing greatness over anything. Greatness is a habit that needs formation from a younger age. Look for greatness in everything you do and starting from now.

For instance, if you are working as a customer service in one of the retail shops, ensure that you provide the best services that your company has ever seen.

By being great at your job, you are allowing infinite opportunities to arise in your life.

4. Be Free to be What You Want to be
Everyday we come across numerous people who pretend and are striving to please each other.

Those people need to be removed from your lives, starting from today! It will be quite a refreshing change to see in your social circle when all those people pleasers make way for honest and genuine individuals who are as driven and passionate as you.

Muhammad Ali truly believed in being free to be what he wanted to be. He never believed in pleasing people. He never wanted to be anyone else, and till his last breath, he was himself. Period.

5. Be Truly Rich

Money is only a tool that helps you buy other tools. We have a choice to be made – to buy those other tools for ourselves or to help others by spreading the message of humanity and love.

Muhammad Ali, clearly, opted the later. His quote:

“To be able to give away riches is mandatory if you wish to possess them. This is the only way that you will be truly rich.”

Perhaps, for a few of us, his quote about being rich can be hard to decipher, but once you understand his perspective, you will see a deeper meaning in it.

6. Know When You Cannot Be Wise

Once you start believing that you know everything, your wisdom dies. The truth is, we are all human beings and we cannot know everything under the sun.

While there is no way we can be good at every damn thing, for what we have strengths and weaknesses, it is possible to gain wisdom by seeking out the wise and making them your friends.

Create an environment of teamwork and growth. Let there be wisdom in all of us.

7. Old Age is Just a Record of One’s Whole Life!

This is my personal favorite success lesson from Muhammad Ali. Every day that we live, we are writing a new page that will be included in our book called, ‘My life’.

Most of us don’t die young, which means when we reach our old age, we will see our record that will contain our mistakes, scratching, scribbles, and everything in between, along with our moments of joy, pride and wisdom.

By the time we reach into our last pages, may the final chapter end on a positive note of a life well lived.

Education / How To Apply For USA Student Visa In Nigeria. by scholarsarena: 9:25pm On Jan 14, 2018
Last week, I wrote a post on the top 20 scholarships available for students in Nigeria, their eligibility and cash-worth.
If you missed it, you can see it HERE

Today, I want to briefly explain how to apply and get students visa for Nairalanders wishing to study in the United states of America.

It is no longer news that many Nigerian students move to the USA for studies every year. Many students are also hampered by issues related to applying for and getting student visa to study in the USA.
A student visa is required for anyone from Nigeria seeking a university degree in the U.S, whether it is for High school or completing a graduate course in most of the colleges or universities in the United States of America.

Foreign students coming to the U.S must complete the specified documentation and paperwork before enrolling in any academic courses and must fulfill each of the requirements of America student visa.

For those students who would like to study in America, there are 2 non-immigrant visas available with the US consulate. These are basically categorized as F and M visas.

The F-visa is offered to non-immigrant students that will enroll as a member of language programs or any other academic degrees. The M-visa is available to those foreign students who wish to pursue a vocational degree by enrolling themselves in the type of courses available in the U.S University of their Choice.

Regardless of the student visa that you’re seeking for, the requirements for eligibility are still the same. To start with, you have to pick the schools in America that you are eligible for according to your academic profile and grades.

If you are accepted by the school, you will receive the SEVIS I-20 or Certificate of Eligibility. You need to have this in order to receive a student visa.

However, if you’re already in America and also have another visa, you should file for a change in visa status in the U.S consulate office nearest to your city to change your visa status to student visa.

In case you are in our home country, Nigeria and have not entered the U.S, you will be required to apply for the F-1 visa or perhaps the applicable student visa to the U.S Consulate in Nigeria (in this case our home country). You need to provide to them the following documents in order to be issued a student visa:

– Your SEVP certification/Student and Exchange Visitor Program

– Financial statements that prove you can pay your tuition and then for any living expenses

– Your TOFEL score, which shows your English language proficiency level

Additionally, you’ll need to prove that you anticipate returning back to Nigeria after completing your education and attaining your degree or certification in the academic or vocational program you’ve enrolled yourself in for.

If you finally find your way in the United States, you will be required to file a Form I-94. This tracks your entry and departure from the U.S, and that is given an admission number.

This unique admission number must be placed on the form I-20 during the time of the immigration processes. On the U.S student visa, you are required by law to keep the I-20 ID, this serves as a record of your legal entry to the country and also it is proof of your visa status.

It’s important to keep the I-20 ID secure for your legal status is dependent upon this document. If you should return to our home country (Nigeria) on holiday or leave America for a short period of time, the visa regulations will require you to fill another new Form I-94.

In regards to the M-1 student visa, you are allowed to file for an extension period after two years. However, if you hold an F-1 visa, you are allowed to apply for an extension provided you are still a student and the university or college DSO grants an extension to complete your education.

You will be required to submit all of the required documentation and file the applicable paperwork with the U.S Consulate.

In conclusion

Keep in mind that the reason student visas are issued to you is that the prospective student (YOU) has proven to the United States that you have enough money to pay for tuition fees and live in the USA.

This opportunity should not be used as a way of getting a visa to simply migrate to the United States and withdraw from your enrollment in the university. Any mistake or lapse by you can contradict your odds of being eligible for student’s visa to USA.

However, there are a few exceptions in allowing a student to work such as on-campus job (work study) with 20 hours every week as well as other kinds of internships.

Also, there are many immigration attorneys that should be able to assist you with the process, if you’ll need one.

Yep. Applied for so many on the list. . . . The economy was so against me.
Around 2010-2012 multiple scholarships were given to one student but these days, consider yourself lucky if you've managed to snag one. They award less candidates these days ás they have more apllicants coupled with unstable oil prices (for snepco, agbami, midwestern, seplat, shell, Mobil and total)

What if I told you that 20 students under my guide win multiple scholarships in 2017??
The truth is that there is always a way even in though things.

It's not true sir. I thought so too when I was in 100 level in 2012 not until I won 5 of those awards myself without knowing anyone or paying a dime!

Infact, apart from free Application, some oil and gas scholarships pay you transport money for coming to write the exam alone.
That way, you won't spend a dime in the process except your time and attention.
Chevron and agbami, for instance, pay transport money to those who take their scholarship exams every year, whether or not they win the award.

Let's be properly guided please.

Hello friends, I am a fresh law graduate.
I want to start my LLM program next year but there are things I don't know yet.

Please lend your opinion on these:

1. which university is the fastest? Duration specifics would be appreciated.

2. can you estimate the probable cost of completing an LLM program in the university suggested above?

3. Can I run the program during my NYSC year?
