I don't know what it takes to be a winner on your thread because I've never seen any of your threads, only had to check them out when I saw this one and knew this guide could be my saving grace. Firstly, I have a few important things to say. I'll be concluding my NYSC in two weeks time and sincerely speaking, I've never been this uncertain or scared of what the future holds since I was born. I've heard countless times of how this stage easily passes as one of the most challenging and scary stages in the life of a Nigerian graduate, but I never knew that could be my case after seemingly doing "so many things" right.
I applied for not less than two hundred job vacancies during my NYSC stint and was called for interview just twice; excluding invitations from scammers and GNLD a.k.a "Nigerian Graduates' Nightmare" *no pun intended* ps: I have a bunch of skillset, my cv was written by a professional, I have a good grade etc etc.
This made me realise that what I, and in extension, all Nigerian graduates, need right now aren't just skills but relevant skills. We're often advised to acquire skills but seldom advised to acquire "relevant skills". Acquiring skills in order to be employable is quite different from acquiring skills in order to be self-reliant. This was the mistake I made and I hope we all learn from it.
@importexpert, thank you for touching lives. I'm interested in your guide and I think we should all look into starting businesses like you advise, rather than just acquiring skills/certificates with which we'd still remain job-seekers.
If you're a student or a serving corp member, don't waste your time on irrelevant skills like I did. Thank you.

fsgcompany: There is a very big misconception about cover letters. But to clear the air, when sending an application via email, your cover letter is what you are supposed to write as the body of your mail. You don't need to attach your CV and a separate cover letter. You only attach a cover letter when you are submitting a hard copy.
Most employers don't give reading preference to applications that come in with a blank email. You should understand that there might be thousands of applications for just 3 openings and if you want to stand a better chance, why not write something in your email? A quick assessment can be done by a recruiter by just reading your cover letter (which is the body of your email) and this might prompt them to download your CV which might just be luckily added to the list. Thank you, I now understand. Please clarify me on the issue of hard copy cv submission. What documents are meant to be included in the package and how do you address the envelope? What type of envelope should be used? Just everything about hard copy submission. |

databoy247: It's not necessary. But you can always provide them if requested. Thanks a lot. While sending your cv and cover letter via email, what's expected to be written as the content of the mail, other than the heading? How do you package a hard copy cv and cover letter for submission? |

Is it necessary to include references in your cv? Someone told me it's only needed during and after interview. |

Sir Lobell, may God bless you abundantly for this selfless service. I just graduated and would be going for NYSC this May. Please, when exactly is the right time for me to start applying for masters scholarships? I'm also confused as to whether I should write the TOEFL or GRE. I would be glad if you could clarify me on these issues. God bless you, sir. |
